In and around events-world for years, Seattle-based CEO and co-founder of MJ Unpacked, George Jage, sowed the seeds for a show committed to the cannabis sector back in 2014. MJ Unpacked, the biggest trade event in a now burgeoning business, hits St Louis, Missouri, this month and Atlantic City, New Jersey, next spring. Aimed exclusively at retail and brand executives on a national scale, it promises quality collaborations, product innovation and cutting-edge scientific advancements as well as access to deal flow and capital. In this episode, George talks about starting a national cannabis CPG (consumer packaged goods) show before there was a national cannabis CPG market, the legalisation process, from Colorado to California and beyond – every state has its own regulatory structure, politics, tax, and infrastructure. With questions from host James Dickson, George discusses the cannabis spoils, ‘This is some really powerful medicine from nature that's been with us since we crawled out of our caves', going on to dig into the makeup of MJ Unpacked, how it adapts for different cities/states, the benefit of controlling audiences and protecting exhibitors/suppliers. A real education in 30 minutes. To keep up to date with all the news, subscribe for free here. If you would like to take part in a podcast, then please complete our submission form.

Cannabis Microdosing with Jason Durnett #129 Microdosing is taking the “low & slow” approach to cannabis. It refers to titration, the process of finding out how much or how little CBD or THC you need to feel the effects you're looking for. there's no such thing as a “standard dose” when it comes to cannabis. Everyone's body reacts differently, and there are a number of factors that impact how you feel after sampling a new strain. Finding the perfect balance for your body is a personal process. The goal is to repeatable predict a feeling you love, whether it's a surge of creativity or a wave of calm. In today's episode, we return to MJ Unpacked to meet Jason Durnett of MiDos and discuss the benefits of cannabis microdosing. Being an entrepreneur is tough! Start that same business in Cannabis and it's at least 10x more difficult. What about starting a business with your spouse as a co-founder and business partner? Maybe try to start an in-person events company a month before a global pandemic? Yeah… George & Kim Jage have done all that. Still love each other! And after two events in Las Vegas and New York, they are onto something disruptive, and are returning to Las Vegas this September! Kim is the energetically connected to the Universe type. Someone who would choose a college major to travel and understand the humans of this world better. She loves people, their energy, and sharing their passions. George is the stolen motorcycles, gas station weed, mushroom walks with undercover cops kind of guy, who unsurprisingly always got himself into trouble. In doing so he built a key skill of how to get out of it and that essential “make it work” drive that helped him start many successful businesses. Following her passion for plant medicine, their meeting at a Tea expo George was running was predicted by Marcus, Kim's naturopathic friend. The connection was immediate! The resulting story is how they came to start a journey as life and business partners, pandemics and all. Every brand has a story, but few have a combination of family recipe, story, and legacy quite like Dr. Norm's. Today, Rick and Jeff “unpack” their experience at the MJ Unpacked conference at the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan as they share their thoughts, highlights, and the sights and sounds from the event. At this high-energy event, they saw more deals get done than ever before, tons of new brands working to enter the space, and a huge number of opportunities taking shape as New York and New Jersey grow into the gigantic markets they're inevitably going to become. While they were there, they caught up with Rusty Wilenkin, CEO of Old Pal. In his words, Old Pal is aiming to create the “Bud Light of weed”–a cannabis product for the everyman that's accessible, affordable, and simple, reminiscent of the era when weed was weed. In this episode, you'll hear more from MJ Unpacked and learn about a ton of exciting brands we discovered at the conference. Then, in our interview with Rusty, we get into how he transitioned out of the legacy market and invented a category, how he's building a cannabis brand at a massive national scale, and his long game for growing Old Pal's portfolio in a fast-moving industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why the cannabis industry is maturing so rapidly, attracting more capital than ever before, and on track to skyrocket with legalization on the East Coast. How Rusty defines the “core user” in the world of cannabis–and why so many brands aren't reaching those people. Why great brands often fail to achieve success at scale–and how Rusty learned from the critical mistakes he made in the first year of Old Pal. What Old Pal is doing to get themselves into emerging markets as they open up. What it means to launch the “Four Loko” of cannabis products–and why Rusty is so excited about it. Do you like edibles? What do you like about them? People who don't tend to have the same complaints; it takes too long to hit, it lasts too long, it makes me tired. What if we could solve some of these complaints? Kim of Azuca and their "precursor" product have started to chip away at the edibles gap for new consumers. For those who like to smoke, the effects of new emulsion technologies may hit you differently than you expect. The Green Repeal - A Guide to Cannabis Marketing & Advertising
This week, we're reporting from the floor of the MJ Unpacked Conference here in New York City. Over the course of three days, we had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the latest innovations in the industry and connect with a number of power players doing fascinating things. First up is Elizabeth Becker. After working in film in LA, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, Elizabeth launched HiBnb–a fully compliant marketplace that offers cannabis-friendly accommodations and activities to enthusiasts while giving producers and retailers access to amazing marketing opportunities. In our interview with Elizabeth, you'll learn why she never assumes that cannabis consumers are dirty or might burn the house down, how her startup fosters community, and the unique challenges she's facing as an entrepreneur in this fast-moving, fast-growing space. Next, we're joined by Brandon Dorsky and Maggie Wilson, CEO and CMO of Fruit Slabs which is an award-winning and kosher-friendly edible brand. Brandon has over a dozen years of experience as an attorney working to build businesses and create intellectual property, and Maggie is an expert-level cannabis sommelier–and became the first Black female to hold that title in 2018. We had the chance to talk with them about how their business has changed since launching in 2015, the ins and outs of getting federal patents for cannabis products, and where to market in a world that's so quick to punish cannabis brands that aren't doing anything wrong. KEY TAKEAWAYS How HiBnb uniquely provides support to cannabis tourists, brands, and products. Why so many “cannapreneurs” can outsource so few of their operations to other companies–and why they often struggle to find funding. What makes California such a difficult place to build and grow a cannabusiness right now. How Fruit Slabs is connecting with customers while offering a better product at a higher price point. Why Maggie recommends that any business that loses access to Instagram move their operations over to Pinterest. While most California cannabis brands struggle to find relevancy (and profitability), Big Pete's is bringing its #1 selling cookies to New York and beyond. Did you go to MJ Unpacked in Vegas last year? The new event was talk of the town and created a more intimate, focused environment that was refreshing after the madness and party that MJBiz and Hall of Flowers have become. Founder and my guest this week George Jage says that different, more professional vibe was very much intentional. He is the former president of MJBiz and Dope magazine and wanted to focus on productivity for MJ Unpacked. The conference will bring together brands, retailers, and investors, as well as an unprecedented level of diversity for a business conference. George and I also discuss what makes a good brand, illicit market, dtc, beverages, and why virtual events suck so much. Join George, myself, and many more May 18th-20th in NYC. https://mjunpacked.com/
Celebrity brands have taken over the cannabis industry. Everywhere you look brands are slapping celebrity endorsements on the packaging and hoping someone picks it up and tries it. Real connoisseurs should be wary, as most of these brands are more focused on marketing than on quality. I was skeptical before my interview with Ashlan and Philippe Cousteau of SeaWeed Naturals. Of course the legacy of Jacques Cousteau speaks for itself in the oceanography world, but what did they know about cannabis? As I pressed them on why and how they developed their product line, I was impressed with their knowledge and intentionality around ingredients, packaging, and formulations. It is clear they could have created any number of products in the world, but they chose cannabis. I think that speaks volumes about how this industry has evolved. https://www.seaweednaturals.com/ ==== This episode is brought to you by MJ Unpacked: May 18-20 in NYC. George Jage, cofounder and CEO of MJ Unpacked, stops by In The Weeds to discuss the show in Las Vegas, his relationship with the movie Midnight Express, the Last Prisoner Project and how he came to cannabis events.
Claire and RJ keep the Season 4 joint circle going as they sit down live in Las Vegas for another conversation from MJ Unpacked, this time with Andrew Iwersen, co-owner of Canyon Edibles. If you haven't had the chance to "suck it, lick it, chew it" Canyon-style, Andrew's wife Morgan Iwersen launched Canyon Edibles back when things were strictly medical in Colorado from her mom's kitchen. As demand quickly grew and adult-use came online in Colorado, Canyon kicked things into high gear and has became one of the most recognizable Colorado edibles alongside brands like Wana, Mary's Medicinals and Cheeba Chews. While Colorado has produced some classic cannabis CPG's, Canyon may be the only one that's managed to maintain a family-first focus while finding massive success. The conversation covers everything from the motivation behind Canyon's packaging changes, and a discussion about the quality of data available from BDSA to the importance of keeping things real as Canyon launches in California. We'll discuss our biggest takeaways and highlight some of our favorite moments and products. We also have another special interview for you. Our guests today are Carrie Mapes and Patty Papas, founders of Hello Again. They have created a cannabis-powered vaginal suppository with soothing botanicals to provide relief from the physical and emotional symptoms that come with menopause. It's a highly innovative product for women who can't get relief in other ways, and it's given them the opportunity to share their wisdom and support women like never before. For those that have never experienced menopause, imagine having your hormones change while going through puberty, but dealing with those symptoms for a period of time that can be three times as long. Increased anxiety, sweatiness, lack of sleep, body pain, headaches and memory loss, these are all symptoms that women struggle with and why this product is so unique. In today's episode, Carrie and Patty talk about how they created a product with the medicinal benefits from cannabis, how the THC aspect works without making you feel high, and why they're focused on helping other women continue to live vibrant lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS How Carrie and Patty first became interested in creating their cannabis product. The potential use cases for cannabis suppositories. The symptoms that they are trying to help alleviate for women. Why some women might not even realize they're in menopause, and why there is a lack of awareness on this topic. The Green Repeal - A Guide to Cannabis Marketing & Advertising
Welcome to our recap of the MJ Unpacked Conference from Las Vegas. MJ Unpacked is the first cannabis event connecting retailers, THC CPG brands, and investors with opportunities to connect, collaborate, and get access to capital. We spent our time walking the floor and attending a wide array of seminars. We learned what a number of cannabis business owners are doing as ambassadors and educators facing a myriad of challenges. We also got a deeper understanding of what is and isn't working across the industry, and found new inspiration along the way. In the first part of this episode, we dig into everything MJ Unpacked: the good, the not-so-good, and what has us most excited for the future. After that, we're talking to Thomas Winstanley, VP of Marketing at Theory Wellness, to explore the differences between the cannabis, alcohol, and pharmaceutical industries. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why the cannabis industry still simply doesn't feel as mature as other fields we've worked in. The insurmountable gap that makes a cannabis trade show different from any other. Why marketing laws regarding cannabis are so difficult to work with (and around). Why Thomas believes e-commerce and delivery systems for the cannabis industry are lagging behind. And that is what ultimately leads to a transactional event because people don't do business with companies, they do business with people.” - George Jage SPONSORSHIP is brought to you by https://restartcbd.com.
