In this episode, Keith shares invaluable insights from a decade-long experience serving 5,000 clients in a landscaping business. He discusses the challenges and strategies to make the business more manageable and enjoyable. Key topics include the importance of consuming industry-specific knowledge through audiobooks and podcasts, avoiding unrelated distractions, and systemizing tasks. He emphasizes the importance of integrity, simplifying services, and maintaining a clear separation between personal and business life. Real-world advice on facing and learning from mistakes, setting clear boundaries, and investing in coaching programs for faster growth are provided to help landscaping business owners succeed. " And when you make these mistakes in your landscaping business, don't resist them and stick your head in the sand, take full responsibility, fall on your sword and eat the mistake, no matter how painful it is and eat it right. That way you'll learn. Through pain and suffering. And then that's how you get better." - Keith Kalfas Topics Covered: Challenges and ease of running a landscaping business. Importance of consuming relevant educational content. Necessity of hyper-focus and avoiding distractions. Learning from and not repeating mistakes. Systematizing the business for profitability and reduced stress. Key Takeaways Hard Work and Focus: It's crucial to invest every waking moment productively, especially in consuming industry-relevant information and avoiding distractions. Hard work and focus are necessary to gain confidence and avoid making repeated mistakes. Simplifying the Business: Running a landscaping business can be easy when treated as a straightforward service business with integrity. Stress can be mitigated by focusing on essential services and systematizing the business. Higher Purpose: Achieving business success becomes easier when driven by a higher purpose or priority in life. This perspective forces a person to streamline operations, focus on important tasks, and systematize the business to make it more manageable and profitable. Jennifer Sundberg is the co-Chief Executive of Board Intelligence a technology company helping thousands of businesses make better decisions. Jennifer was originally a strategy consultant, and her light bulb moment came when she was asked to be a ‘fly on the wall' during a client's board meeting. The client was riding high, but the storm clouds were gathering as regards future challenges. During the three hours she observed the board, they never got to the heart of the matter. It wasn't based on the wrong people being on the board, she realised it was because they simply didn't have the right information in front of them within the reams of paperwork. All the information they had was backward looking. Jennifer realised that all boards are drowning in information partially based on habit and convention, much of which doesn't matter, so they struggle to find the signal through the noise. Together with her business partner, Pippa, she started Board Intelligence to try and help boards leverage better and more appropriate information on which to base their strategic and critical decision making. Jennifer is genuinely bemused as to how she became a successful entrepreneur as she in her own words ‘doesn't fit the stereotype'. However, she also realises that her intellect and insatiable curiosity drove her to choose this path. Jennifer is motivated to promote and empower women on boards. She outlines that we have seen great changes. From 5% of women on boards to 40% and from half the FTSE 100 boards being male only to none today. Jennifer's first client was EasyJet which propelled her business into numerous discussions with boards. At this point they had no idea of the technology angle that they were set to embark on. Board Intelligence moved from a very analogue and paper driven approach to a business that today is a fully developed technology business. This change in business model was based on the realisation that very similar questions were being asked by CEO's and Boards. They started to build up a question bank and then using technology packaged them up into a technology platform called ‘Lucia'. This created the ‘Question Driven Insight Model' Today, Board Intelligence is helping executive teams and boards focus on the conversations that matter, avoid wasted time and effort and do less harm with the right data and information. Badly informed boards make bad decisions. Board Intelligence will help people manage the big audacious and knotty problems all businesses now face. Jennifer's new book ‘Collective Intelligence' is based on her desire to help more and more people leverage the collective in making better decisions and cascade it through entire organisations by building three critical capabilities. In this episode, Jennifer explains those capabilities/habits that are necessary. They are. 1. Critical thinking: 2. Clear communication: 3. Focus: It is every leader's responsibility to empower the level below them. As one CEO told Jennifer, ‘The important decisions are not made in my boardroom' as he was aware that it was his people working day to day who were making the most critical decisions. Too much power concentrated in one person makes us stupid. www.boardintelligence.com Collective Intelligence is available on Amazon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Focus: It is good to worship the Lord! It is right to give him thanks and praise. We should at all times, and in all places, give thanks. He is our maker. He is our redeemer. He is our healer, our provider, our help, our justice. The Lord is our King! Main Text: Psalm 147
Welcome to the Imperfect Success! This episode delves deep into the art and science of 'focus'. How do we work WITH our brain to focus easier? How do we use simple focus tools that let us get way more done? And, of course, how we can tap into the MOTHER LOAD of focus - the flow state? It's not about merely telling oneself to concentrate harder. Instead, it's about genuine, actionable strategies to enhance focus and productivity. Nicole unveils why so many of us struggle with focus, breaking down external, internal, and cognitive challenges, and illuminates the path to the cream of the crop of focus – the flow state. Key Takeaways: Definition of Focus: It's the cognitive ability to channel attention and resources on a specific task, blocking out potential distractions, essential for effective decision-making and task completion. Challenges to Focus: From the constant digital interruptions in today's world to personal battles with mental clutter or emotional disturbances, numerous factors can stand in the way of achieving true focus. Adversaries of Focus: Some of the biggest inhibitors include perfectionism, the fear of failing, multitasking, and allowing ourselves to be endlessly distracted. Flow State: Introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the flow state is described as the optimal experience where individuals are so engrossed in an activity that nothing else seems to matter, marked by characteristics like absolute concentration, a sense of reward, and effortlessness. Rapid-Fire Focus Boosters: Simple yet effective strategies like using the Do Not Disturb function, setting clear goals, meditation, getting ample sleep, and scheduled breaks can help maintain and boost focus. The Sermon for Sunday, June 25th, 2023, is based on Romans 3:21-25a,27-28 Today's Focus: It is Godly wisdom for his people to build on his Word, and on his Word alone. This conversation between Craig Constantine and Patrick Oancia revolves around the importance of structure and exploration in movement practices. They discuss the concept of balancing structure and chaos to create a practice that offers both a foundation and room for individual exploration. Patrick shares his experience in developing a movement practice called Baseworks that combines structure with the opportunity for multiple possibilities. They also touch upon the significance of finding deep connections and the value of building relationships within communities. ( Note: This conversation was originally recorded in 2020. Sorry it took me so long to get around to republishing this as a podcast. ~Craig ) "I wanted to make something structured enough that people can go from A to Zed in a learning pattern, but at the same time, have some room for that person to have some space to perceive it as something interesting for themselves." ~ Patrick Oancia 42'30" Patrick shares his insights on the significance of structure within movement practices. He emphasizes the importance of a structured approach that allows individuals to progress from one stage to another, while still providing room for personal exploration and diverse perspectives. They discuss how structure combined with chaos creates an engaging and interesting experience, fostering depth of perception and possibilities for growth. "If people jump from one thing to the next, there's no potential for somebody to sink their teeth into something, it's reality." ~ Patrick Oancia 44'30" The conversation goes into the notion of embracing multiple methods and perspectives in movement practices. Patrick reflects on his experience with strict yoga teachings and how, despite the advice to stick to one method, he pursued different approaches simultaneously. Craig and Patrick discuss the value of exploring various methods, as it allows individuals to gain a broader understanding and depth of perception. They acknowledge that everyone's journey is unique, and by embracing multiple perspectives, one can find what resonates with them personally. "Find the others… if you come away with one new deep connection, that's a super valuable thing." ~ Craig Constantine 46'35" Also explored in the conversation is the role of community and deep connections. Craig and Patrick emphasize the value of finding like-minded individuals who share a passion for movement and personal growth. They highlight the importance of creating meaningful connections and relationships within communities, as it provides support, inspiration, and opportunities for collaboration. They recognize that a single deep connection can be more valuable than a multitude of superficial ones. Take-aways… Balance and Focus: It's important to strike a balance between various aspects of personal development. Just like putting all your golf balls in the physical training bucket can make you good at it but eventually become boring, focusing on a restricted number of things allows for deeper attention and progress. Structure and Flexibility: Creating a structured framework for learning and practice provides a solid foundation for growth. However, within that structure, it's essential to allow room for individual exploration and personalization, enabling people to find their own unique perspectives and interests. The Complexity of Verbalizing Concepts: Both participants acknowledge the challenge of articulating their ideas and concepts when discussing movement practices. Movement is often a deeply experiential and nonverbal domain, making it challenging to express certain concepts verbally. This recognition highlights the multifaceted nature of movement practices and the importance of direct experience and embodiment alongside verbal communication. Multiple Paths: Everyone's journey is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to personal development. Each individual may follow a different path, focusing on different areas at different stages of life. It's important to respect and acknowledge the diverse journeys people undertake. Deep Connections: Building meaningful connections with like-minded individuals is invaluable. Finding "the others" who share similar interests and passions can lead to enriching conversations, collaborations, and personal growth. Even if you come away with just one deep connection, it can be highly valuable. Resources… Baseworks Baseworks is a movement approach that helps anyone better feel and understand the body while developing strength, flexibility, and better control over one's movements. @baseworkslife Baseworks on Instagram and Baseworks on Facebook. Baseworks's "Zaap" has even more ways to learn about Patrick and Baseworks. (Written with help from Chat-GPT.) --- Why does Movers Mindset exist? The purpose of Movers Mindset is to create and share great conversations with movement enthusiasts. Each conversation feeds my insatiable curiosity, but I share them to turn on a light for someone else, to inspire them, or to give them their next question. In the podcast, I talk with movement enthusiasts to learn who they are, what they do, and why they do it. I'm interested in the nature and philosophy of movement and in exploring themes like independence, self-direction, and human excellence. My interests color each conversation and provide some structure to Movers Mindset. But since I like to take the scenic route, every conversation ends up going somewhere unique. I really appreciate your time and attention, and I don't take it for granted. --- I need your support I want to share more of these amazing conversations, with amazing people, but I'm limited by the cost of the project. Please support what I'm doing. Every dollar really makes a difference. You can make a one-time contribution via Buy Me a Coffee, https://www.buymeacoffee.com/moversmindset …or make a recurring contribution via Patreon, https://www.patreon.com/moversmindset --- Thank you! My personal mission is creating better conversations to spread understanding and compassion. And Movers Mindset is one of the things I do in service of my mission. Drop by constantine.name for my weekly email, my other podcasts, writing and more. The Movers Mindset project grew from conversations I started having as part of my personal journey rediscovering movement. The project started late in 2015, and it was initially simply a web site that shared others' writing. The project grew, and in 2017 I started the podcast. I've worked extremely hard, but none of this would have been possible without so much help from so many people. Cheers! ɕ
We had Kristin Fuller on The Porch to talk about taking a sabbatical. No, not a yearlong vacation in Europe (although, that could work for some!) For Kristin, it was a set-aside time full of rest, learning, and quieting the noise of life to recover parts of herself. Here are some tips she gave us on creating a sabbatical for yourself: -Financial: Start small by figuring out the actual monthly amount of income you need to live. Consider living below your means to give yourself some wiggle room and come up with a game plan so you can do this without considerable stress and anxiety. -Focus: It can be easy to just want to take a long vacation and not strategically make purpose out of your extended time off. Instead, identify your needs for your sabbatical first by prioritizing the things you need to restore the parts of your lost self. -Listen: Even in the self-care world, we can be distracted from what we actually need! You're the only one that knows your deepest desires and needs. Create the space to get rid of the noise so you can hear your inner voice again. It's not that you don't know what to do, it's that you can't hear yourself. You can find Kristin here ⬇️ LI Link: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristinefuller/ KEEP IN TOUCH
Our favorite Radio Reverend is back with “Keeping the Focus” It can become easy to slip into counterproductive mindsets as we're introduce to new challenges and manage old problems. However it is the duty, responsibility, and benefit of the believer to take on a mindset that focuses on what is good and pure. This is not to dismiss our issues but to manage them in a more efficient way. Balancing and identifying but what is good and bad in life is necessary to make better choices in life, but focusing on what is Good in life is necessary to having a good life #PreachEZ #spirituality #church #focus #focusonyourself #jesus #gospel

Remember that evaluated failure makes us better. Learn from mistakes. When you fix clients’ problems, they are 3 times more likely to be repeat customers. People don’t love us because we’re perfect, but because we’re perfectly flawed. Aim to be “flawsome.” Trying to do too many things is almost always the wrong approach. Focus on crushing one thing, even if it requires you to cannibalize your own product line. When you add more tasks, subtract others so that you don’t ove
MANA BOMB: Make peace with the fact that you are the villain in someone else's story. FOCUS: It's not about you. ENGAGEMENT: Sometimes we don't have to be involved in someone else's narrative. But good friends will always make things right. When is it ok? - - ….even if you felt you were doing the right thing. Everyone has a right to their own narrative even if you feel they're wrong (*or absurd

Keeping focus is becoming increasingly challenging. We know our ability to focus on a goal or a task until it's complete is critical for attaining desired outcomes. In a world that is overflowing with distractions, notifications vying for our attention, how do we remain focused? At one level, Focus is about managing distractions - When I manage my distractions, am able to focus better! As Steve Jobs once said, Focus is not saying ‘Yes' to one thing, it's saying ‘No' to hundred other things. We might be seeing possibilities, opportunities and shiny objects floating around us all the time - in different types, shapes and sizes. Many of them might look tempting to go for. Saying yes to them may make us incredibly busy. Whether it would translate in to successful outcomes is the question. If you want to persevere you need to pursue only the opportunities that move you the most, the possibilities that truly matters, and say no to the rest. It's difficult, but the results are worth it as Steve Jobs said on another occasion. Focus - It's about managing distractions. To enhance our ability to focus, we need to enhance our ability to manage our distractions. When I manage my distractions, am able to focus better! Hacking Music: The Habits of Headliners, Habits and Hacks for Thriving in the New Music Marketplace
Episode 06 - The Cupcake Hack, Hacking Music with John Pisciotta About Hacking Music: Welcome to the Hacking Music podcast, here you will learn the Strategic Frameworks, Force Multipliers & Micro Habits essential for thriving in the new music marketplace. Our mission is to help you to massively grow your artist career in new ways that support, strengthen and sell your content. Additionally, we bring together music and media leaders to unpack how strategy and execution drive their success. The Cupcake Hack helps artists identify how projects can be broken down, better managed, and more easily completed. Such projects can range from planning a tour to developing a marketing plan for a new album. Managing projects like these well is important because each of them contribute to building momentum in a career. Music artists tend not to make great business managers because they bite off more than they can chew when starting a new project such as planning a tour or creating a new album. They have grand ideas and visions but reaching the end seems like such a massive undertaking that many of them become overwhelmed and give up. The Cupcake has six important attributes: Small size - It is small in scope and does not take up very much room or require a plethora of supplies to bake correctly. Completable - Baking a cupcake is a task that is manageable and is not intimidating. Quick - You don't have to dedicate a great deal of time to bake a cupcake. Learning - When you are baking a cupcake, it is easy to identify exactly what you need to improve at. Winnable - Completing a cupcake builds confidence for everybody involved. Momentum - What you learned through baking the Cupcake can be put to use when baking on a larger scale. BENEFITS OF THE CUPCAKE HACK Supercharged Learning Cycles - Breaking down large projects into smaller ones subjects the artist to more learning cycles (see definition below). This results in the artist improving at that particular task. Hope - Accomplishing smaller wins leads to the artist feeling more optimistic and excited due to the creation of momentum in their career. To put it simply, things are moving! It also helps you remain relevant in the eyes of the outside world because it appears that you are constantly doing something. Better Music - Because you are putting yourself through The Cupcake Hack over and over again, you begin to improve at that task. An example would be how some of the best songwriters in the industry constantly advocate that artists attempt to write a new song every few days. Improvement comes naturally with increased learning cycles. Focus - It is much easier to stay focused on what needs to be done when you are seeking to accomplish a smaller task. You aren't wasting time, energy, or money on things that might not be necessary to reach your goal. It is also much easier to make decisions that avoid costly mistakes. The Wedding Cake Appears - One of the best things you will learn about The Cupcake Hack is that focusing on the small things leads to the big things taking care of them- selves. Think of a novelist committing to writing one chapter each week. After several months, the novelist would have a rough draft in place that includes the foundation for an entire story. They had their head down focusing on baby steps only to look up and realize they had finished a marathon. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hackingmusic/message
Did you start your new year off with a "theme word or phrase"? Everywhere I turn people have selected words related to vision for 2020 since 20/20 eyesight means you have perfect vision. But no-one seems more excited about the idea of 20/20 Vision than Rhonda, a dear friend of mine. She was excited because she heard the clear whisper of God that he wanted to give her clear vision spiritually in 2020. And she is really, really believing God. Here words have inspired me again. There's just nothing like hearing God speak to your heart especially when it is concerning something that has been growing in your spirit for a while. Rhonda's Dream Let me tell you how God used Rhonda's dream to influence me. She was so tired living in "sauna Florida" (No, sauna is not a place it the hot weather.) and she dreamed of living in the mountains where it was cooler. When she found her perfect patio lounger, she put it on her Facebook page. It was like a super, high-end hammock, made of a beautiful tan fabric instead of the roping that leaves marks on the back-side of your legs and arms. It was complete with an arched canopy to keep you cool as you relaxed and soothed your nerves swaying back and forth. The words she had typed below the picture echoed like sounds bouncing off a canyon wall in my head for days. They hounded me, like a persistent child repeats himself incessantly. She said... “I want this… in the mountains so I can lay there and be cool and look beyond what I can see…” The last phrase jumped off the page at me. “…and look beyond what I can see.” I recognized my Father’s voice in those words. “Pat, look beyond what you can see. See beyond what you can see.” I'm telling you those were heavy words... more like heavenly words. Compelling Convicting Words. See beyond what you can see! What? Do you ever hear the whisper of God and then have no idea what He means. So I pondered the words and asked God to give me understanding. I can't see beyond what I can see or can I? There are plenty of examples in Scripture. That was what God was calling the children of Israel to do…see beyond the giants. But they didn’t. That was what God was calling Joshua to do when he faced the thick walls of Jericho. And he did. The Israelites saw the giants... what they could see with their natural eyes; but Joshua saw beyond what he could see. He saw Almighty God; who stood behind His promise. And what they each saw determined where they lived and how they lived. Defeated or Victorious. What they saw determined whether they were victorious or defeated. The choice is obvious; if we want to live victorious! We have to see beyond what we can see with our natural eyes. It will take more than standing on a mountain...with binoculars or even a telescope to do that. Stumbled? The same day I stumbled onto Rhonda's post…stumbled? What a silly thought! When we walk with Jesus He guides our path. The same day I found Rhonda’s post, I listened to a teaching that solved the question that rattled even louder than God's Words...HOW? My take away from that podcast was– Seeing from God’s perspective requires a Biblically renewed mind. And that's how you can see beyond what you can see... you see through God's eyes to see what He sees. If I want to see what God sees I’ve got to crawl up in His arms, look out as He points His powerful finger in the direction of what He wants me to see. It means listening to Him...sometimes...for me it is most of the time...it means hearing His whisper. That's what revelation does... it opens your eyes and that's one of the roles of the Holy Spirit. It illuminates Scripture so you know Jesus better and what God has for you as a believer. It requires faith to see beyond what you can see. Faith that's rooted in God's promises. It requires mixing the discipline of studying God’s Word with faith. It means choosing to believe, when reason is screaming in your ears. We must look through the lens of His Word and faith in that Word to see what God sees. Focus It means we have to focus on the unseen instead of the seen. 2 Cor 4:18 New International Version So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. It is especially important when things are difficult. Let's zoom in for a closer look at that verse, but this time let's read it from the Berean Study Bible starting with verse 17. …17For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that is far beyond comparison. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. With so many problems going on around us, let's refocus on Jesus. Let's renew our minds with promises and Scriptures instead of gossip and news reports. Let's believe God's Word. Declare His promises and keep on doing until HIs will comes in our homes and in our lives. Let's pray. Dear God, help us to look beyond what I can see to behold you …to behold your face… to see what you see, so we can be what you called us to be. So we can do what you called us to do. Did you see what was beyond the tree? Are you seeing what is beyond what you can see?

The Fat-Burning Man Show by Abel James: The Future of Health & Performance
Want to know the secret to staying young? Ask Doctor Cates. Why? She's a walking billboard for anti-aging. Plus, she really knows what she's talking about. Dr. Trevor Cates, known as the Spa Doctor, was the first woman licensed as a naturopath in the state of California. Now practicing in beautiful Park City, Utah, Doctor Cates makes it her mission to help people on their road to wellness through her podcast, blog, articles, web site, television appearances, speaking engagements, and her actual brick-and-mortar practice. In my talk with Dr. Cates, we dive into the fountain of youth! Everyone is getting older… it's better than the alternative, right? But we don't have to suffer through the symptoms of premature aging (wrinkles, fatigue, weight gain, chronic disease) when so much is actually in our own hands.Dr. Cates is about to give us some insight into ageing gracefully, including:Spotting the six signs of premature aging. Why genes don't matter as much as you thought they did. What you're buying that makes you age faster.21 Day Healthy Habits ChallengePlus, how to make a green smoothie kids love! SHOW NOTES Dr. Trevor Holly Cates, affectionately called The Spa Doctor, was the first woman licensed as a naturopath in the state of California. Since then, she's been blazing a trail in the world of natural, holistic health and wellness.A walking billboard for anti-aging, Dr. Cates looks like she's in her twenties! She obviously practices what she preaches… which falls decidedly into the “lifestyle” group of anti-aging proponents as opposed to the group that goes for surgery and synthetic fixes. What does aging look like? We can't stop aging, but we can prevent early aging. Watch for these six signs of early aging:FATIGUE: You may start to feel yourself getting tired more often.FOCUS: It might feel harder to stay focused.PHYSIQUE: It's harder to stay in shape—as you lose muscle and gain fat.ACHES AND PAINS: You'll start to feel ‘em.SKIN CHANGES: You may start to notice wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration.CHRONIC DISEASE: Your risk for diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease is elevated. “We are all getting older, but the goal is to age gracefully.”You can see the way people live their lives on their faces as in their bodies. What are some of the things we can change to help us age gracefully? LIFESTYLE CHANGESLimiting sun exposure goes a long way toward helping you look younger. Some sun is good for your daily dose of Vitamin D and to help you feel good and be active, just be smart about it. Protect your skin by wearing a hat, covering up, and avoiding going out at peak sun hours. Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. Cigarettes are an environmental toxin that causes wrinkled, leathery skin on top of a host of other health issues including lung cancer. Avoid environmental toxins found in the air you breathe, the food you buy, and your personal care and cleaning products. With toxins in our lotions, shampoos, perfumes, makeup as well as in our tile cleaner, dish soap, and more… it's a bit overwhelming. But the key is to start small. TIPS FOR LIMITING YOUR EXPOSURE TO TOXINSIf the air quality is poor, you can move. Honestly, people don't often think of that as an option but it can change the quality of your life. However, you can also focus on things you have more control over, such as changing the air quality inside your home by:Reducing or eliminating the use of toxic pesticides and cleaning products.Changing your air filter once a month. Eliminate toxins on your skin by choosing your personal care products carefully. Makeup, perfume, aftershave, lotion, shampoo, and other body products are often highly toxic. A good rule of thumb is, “If you can't eat it, don't put it on your skin.” What you may not realize is that it absorbs through your skin right into your bloodstream. Switch to organic produce and foods that are high in antioxidants. Eliminating the chemicals and genetically engineered foods will help keep your body strong, and the antioxidant foods will help reverse the oxidation process. 21 DAY HEALTHY HABITS CHALLENGEMany people know that they have bad habits, but they don't know how to break them. A simple ten minutes a day can make a huge impact. Understanding why healthy habits are important is a huge part of the shift. The 21 Day Healthy Habits Challenge is a series of short, simple videos designed to help you start incorporating healthy habits into your daily life just a few minutes at a time. The videos cover things like simple nutrition, how to get a better night's sleep, and even how to upgrade your self-esteem! By starting with the basics, you don't get overwhelmed, which is easy to do. You can get the first three videos for free on the web site. What separates someone who's throwing kettle balls at the age of 80 from someone in a nursing home at that age? We like to blame genetics… and genetics certainly do play a role in how we age. However, we are finding that we can change our genetic expression through our lifestyle choices. Whether or not we make those changes has a lot to do with motivation. People who are depressed or have a low self-esteem aren't going to take care of themselves. I went back to school and got a degree in spiritual psychology because I wanted to dig into this deeper issue: Why people are resistant to change. What kind of emotional issues do you have? Can't give up comfort foods? Why? What's the worst thing that will happen? Are you dwelling on traumatic experiences or reliving the past? Don't dwell on it.As yourself, “How can I be the best I can be?” The effect of small changes over a long period of time is tremendous. HOW DO SHORT-TERM EXTREMES EFFECT LONG-TERM HEALTH?If you load up on a supplement, over-exercise, or restrict your calories to the point of starvation, you're going to do more damage and age quicker because you're not getting the right kind of balance. “A healthy lifestyle can't be done in spurts. The biggest impact is going to be your lifelong habits.” Most conventional medicine is about preventing people from dying prematurely. What we really want is to live every day symptom free, disease free, and feel great, look great, and be ready to charge! What is Dr. Cates doing every day to stay looking and feeling young?I start every morning with a healthy green smoothie full of greens, a bit of fruit, coconut milk, and a healthy protein powder. I can get so much more done and have so much more energy than if I were to start the day with a pastry.I exercise every day. Whether it's skiing, hiking, trail running, or biking, I have more energy and feel better when I get exercise.I love what I do. As a naturopathic physician, I'm always trying to find the underlying cause of a person's health problem. One patient came to me with insomnia. After doing a lot of digging, the only obstacle I could see was that she hated her job. At the end of her visit, I told her that she needed a new job! She didn't come back. When I ran into her later, she told me that her life had transformed: She quit her job and got a new one. Her insomnia was no more. I can't stress enough how important it is to love what you do. I love what I do. I do the podcast, I blog, I see patients. I love it. Let's talk about your kids! How do you manage the reality of the world your kids are growing up in? Consistency and education. It's important to talk to your kids about their choices and to be consistent. Don't take them to a fast food restaurant one day and expect them not to want it the next. It's also important to be a good role model. I grew up on an organic farm and my parents were such great role models. My dad, every evening he would chop up carrots and apples and fresh fruits and veggies and those were our snacks. Where do you stand on grains? I stick mainly to gluten free grains. One of my kids is sensitive to gluten, she's seven years old and great at avoiding it. She has her gluten free treats when the other kids have their treats at school or birthday parties. With kids it can be really challenging. But if you can start a garden or take them shopping and let them help cook, kids want to eat what they help prepare. Is there a trick to getting greens into kids' smoothies?Start early. The earlier you start, the quicker they get used to it. If you're starting green smoothies with an older child, add in some frozen berries or fruit. You can also put it in a cup that they can't see through, so they can't see that it's green or brown. Once they taste that it's good, they'll be okay. It's not necessary to add honey if you're using fruit, it's generally sweet enough. The thing you want to avoid is sugar. If you give a child a smoothie with orange juice, banana, and frozen fruit you're just going to be loading them up with natural sugars and they'll still be flying around the house with a sugar buzz. Skip the juice and use unsweetened coconut or almond milk. What's in the works for Dr. Cates right now?THE PODCAST: THE SPA DR.
