Future Beats Nostalgia - Fly In Formation Don't get it twisted, the past decades were great, but nothing compared to what's in front of you. Create What's Next.  Your future depends on it.  Good morning, fam. It is  Tuesday here. So flying formation,  let's point our minds in the right directions and clean out our minds and put some guardrails up as we go about our day. Uh, so today in flying formation, I want to talk really, it's a cautionary tale. Uh, it's called future beats nostalgia.  And what happens is that easily  the 80 20 rule applies here.  80 percent of the people get stuck in nostalgia,  the other remaining 20,  if they're disciplined, focused and work, they can build the future.  We see it, we've seen it for years. The person who is stuck in the way it was,  person who  is so committed to a decade that they can't think about their future and build their future.  An example would be a Technicolor example is the Beatles.  The fandom around the Beatles can be immense  and nothing against the Beatles. The Beatles are great. I love them, but the Beatles have already happened.  It's our job  and the job of everybody in the community to create the next. Beatles.  Wouldn't that be awesome? If we could do that, even if we  get half the way there, we win. But the point is building the future,  thinking about the future more than you're in love with the nostalgia of the past.  You see it  on YouTube where people just  spend hours stuck in a decade or an artist. Um, and they really are taken out of the game. They're taken, they're put in the sidelines and they stopped. What happens is they stop  crafting their future and fighting, building and developing the future  could be an artist. It could be a business. It could be a product, whatever it is. They're, they're no longer when, when they're in nostalgia, they no longer have the responsibilities of building. of creating what's next.  Okay.  So that's our fly information today. I want you to be very cautious  of your thinking and your team's thinking around nostalgia. Are they getting sucked into the vacuum?  of nostalgia of the eighties of the sixties of Frank Sinatra of the Beatles of the Rolling Stone, whatever that is, that's already happened and it's closed. You can't participate in that. You need to create what's next. You need to create the next Beatles, the next Frank Sinatra,  the next whatever. Okay, that's our fly information for today. Future beats nostalgia. I will see you guys inside  the community today.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hackingmusic/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hackingmusic/support

Get It Out of Your Head and Into The World - 4 Tools for Multiplying Your Time TOOL 1: The Super High Value Task Tool It's SOOOOO common to get struck in your head. So easy to be distracted by the noise. Do you feel it? Yeah. For artists and entrepreneurs the superpower of this century is found in one word, That word is Focus. Here's the deal - The world needs the stuff artists have IN them. And at the same time - theres a war. So how do get better at it? Where do we spend our time? How we rank our priorities? What are the tools, that help us turn off the noise? How we get lethal in doing the RIGHT work at the RIGHT time in the SMARTEST way possible? So welcome, today we're gonna talk about how to get it out of your head and into the world. These are four tools for multiplying your time. So the best way to think about this is to think about cupcakes. So what do I mean by that? Some of us in the hacking music community may be familiar with cupcakes, but I'm gonna back up and give some context here. 1. “Cupcake - Birthday - Wedding Cakes” The Best way to think about work and Multiplying Your Time 2. 51% of All Grammy Winners are Independent Artists - What is the World We are Living In? 3. 3 Common types of people - you may be familiar with, no THINGS, some THINGS, and many THINGS 4. 2 WORLDVIEWs: External scorecard and Internal scorecard 5. Overview of The 4 Tools 6. The Super High Value Task Tool 7. Are Stickies Notes The Super Tool of the 21st Century? Hi Everybody welcome. So in this training, we're gonna talk about how to get it out of your head and into the world. These are four tools for multiplying your time. So the best way to think about this is to think about cupcakes. So what do I mean by that? Some of us in the hacking music community may be familiar with cupcakes, but I'm gonna back up and give some context here. Cupcakes, Birthday Cakes and Wedding Cakes The cupcake hack is this there's three levels. There's cupcakes, there's birthday cakes, and there's the big, bad wedding cake. Cupcakes are quick, couple ingredients, 20 or 30 minutes, and you can eat. Or you can throw 'em away if they stink. Right. They're easy. These are cupcakes, right? As we move on, we move to birthday cakes. So birthday cakes have more ingredients, may take an hour or two to make a birthday cake. You gotta make the frosting and just a little more expertise, right? It's it's not as simple as the cupcake, right? You have to be a little bit more of a intermediate. Not expert, but you need to know your stuff, right? And then if we think about a wedding cake, my goodness, these things are three levels. Awesome frosting taste. Great. They got the little people on 'em. Takes a lot of expertise. You gotta move them. You gotta be careful not to let 'em fall very expensive. You don't want to mess up a wedding cake. Right? So this is all about projects, confidence, and kind of getting the ideas, the things you have in your head to get them into the world. ********** This episode is sponsored by Artistwerx - a record label as a service company. Agile Artists - Managing Projects that MATTER with Tommy Norman

Hey everybody, welcome to a conversation I call Agile Artists. This is all about managing projects that matter. We are joined today by my guest, Tommy Norman. This is EP 5 in How To Build A Platform Under Your Music: The 10 Habits That Are More Powerful Than Talent. Whether we realize it or not, EVERYBODY IS A PROJECT MANAGER and to a large extent EVERYTHING IS A PROJECT. So let's make sure we get this right. To be clear, I'm not talking about "quick" tasks, the “one and done” type things. I'm talking about chunky ones. The three month... six-month projects that are SUPER important to growing your career. This conversation is about those kind of projects. The ones that may scare you a little bit. The ones that involve a number of people, all focused on building and winning together. Capeesh? When we start out, many of us may not think of ourselves as a “project manager”, but at the end of the day, as your career grows and you begin to work on larger and more important projects, your role is actually, that of “overseer” and “manager” of that project. You are the “director”of the film if you will. For new-ish artists, often times, the thing limiting your ability to grow is you not recognizing that you are responsible for managing your projects. An young “artist' will want to “feel” their way though, and “improvise” a way, after all they are artists right? Well, NOT when managing big and chunky projects. Operating as an “Artist” only will seriously limit your growth when you managing projects with your “creative" muscle. A solid understanding of PROJECT MANAGEMENT is VITAL as you move from a “DEVELOPING” artist to a “DEPLOYING” artist to “DOMINATING” artist. As your career grows so do your responsibilities. This is exactly why I wanted to talk with Tommy. He has managed thousands of projects over the last 15 years and his HINDSIGHT is actually our FORESIGHT. John Also, if this makes your tail wag. I want to give you something that will move you forward. ►► Grab my FREE "Laying The Foundation" - Removing Limiting Beliefs. This is book 1 in The Hacking Music Series (E-book Edition). In the legacy music business artists primarily “sold” their music. In the new music marketplace the “music”, still INCREDIBLY important, now feeds the many “experiences” the artist CREATES, STAGES and SELLS. There are dozens of “experiences” artists are now responsible for. To give you an idea, think of how many products [ aka: experiences ] Disney created around the movie Frozen. Dozens maybe? Hundreds? The Disney model is now the standard for career, thoroughbred, profitable artists. Today we are going to dive into one of my favorite topics; building remarkable experiences. Experiences are what drives your growth, whether it's in concert, in ecom, on a live stream or in recorded music staging a great experience is a non-negotiable for artists who are building a world-class career. A couple questions we want to answer in this video: - How have concerts changed? - What do fans and customers expect in the new music world? - Are you providing your fans with a world-class remarkable experience? - What makes a great experience? - Are you ignoring your experiences? - Who are the artists and brands who successfully and consistently create world-class experiences? If you are not thinking about the experiences around your career, it will be like putting a bottleneck on your success. Experiences are what drives your growth, whether it's in concert, in ecom, on a live stream or in recorded music staging a great experience is a non-negotiable for artists who are building a world-class career. In this first video in the “How to Build a Platform Under Your Music” series we look at how to stage experiences instead of just the traditional concerts. This is an essential discipline for building a platform under your content [your music] From the Hacking Music field guide: An EXPERIENCE is an immersible moment impacting the five senses that cannot be duplicated by digital means. While in the past, the consumer has often been content to be simply be a spectator, today's consumer expects to be an active participant that can actually play a role IN EVEN SHAPE the outcome of an event. Simply stated, an experience moves from transactional to transformational. In this episode of ‘Hacking ‘Music with John Pisciotta” I'm gonna talk about how to start thinking about staging world class experiences. How artists in the past, had to wait 20 or 30 years before focusing on this and how you the NEXT generation of great artists, can start getting this into your day-to-day workflow today. My hope is that after this discussion you'll be able to pinpoint where you are in staging great experiences. Are you developing this, or are you deploying this or are you dominating in this. Episode 06 - The Cupcake Hack, Hacking Music with John Pisciotta About Hacking Music: Welcome to the Hacking Music podcast, here you will learn the Strategic Frameworks, Force Multipliers & Micro Habits essential for thriving in the new music marketplace. Our mission is to help you to massively grow your artist career in new ways that support, strengthen and sell your content. Additionally, we bring together music and media leaders to unpack how strategy and execution drive their success. The Cupcake Hack helps artists identify how projects can be broken down, better managed, and more easily completed. Such projects can range from planning a tour to developing a marketing plan for a new album. Managing projects like these well is important because each of them contribute to building momentum in a career. Music artists tend not to make great business managers because they bite off more than they can chew when starting a new project such as planning a tour or creating a new album. They have grand ideas and visions but reaching the end seems like such a massive undertaking that many of them become overwhelmed and give up. The Cupcake has six important attributes: Small size - It is small in scope and does not take up very much room or require a plethora of supplies to bake correctly. Completable - Baking a cupcake is a task that is manageable and is not intimidating. Quick - You don't have to dedicate a great deal of time to bake a cupcake. Learning - When you are baking a cupcake, it is easy to identify exactly what you need to improve at. Winnable - Completing a cupcake builds confidence for everybody involved. Momentum - What you learned through baking the Cupcake can be put to use when baking on a larger scale. BENEFITS OF THE CUPCAKE HACK Supercharged Learning Cycles - Breaking down large projects into smaller ones subjects the artist to more learning cycles (see definition below). This results in the artist improving at that particular task. Hope - Accomplishing smaller wins leads to the artist feeling more optimistic and excited due to the creation of momentum in their career. To put it simply, things are moving! It also helps you remain relevant in the eyes of the outside world because it appears that you are constantly doing something. Better Music - Because you are putting yourself through The Cupcake Hack over and over again, you begin to improve at that task. An example would be how some of the best songwriters in the industry constantly advocate that artists attempt to write a new song every few days. Improvement comes naturally with increased learning cycles. Focus - It is much easier to stay focused on what needs to be done when you are seeking to accomplish a smaller task. You aren't wasting time, energy, or money on things that might not be necessary to reach your goal. It is also much easier to make decisions that avoid costly mistakes. The Wedding Cake Appears - One of the best things you will learn about The Cupcake Hack is that focusing on the small things leads to the big things taking care of them- selves. Think of a novelist committing to writing one chapter each week. After several months, the novelist would have a rough draft in place that includes the foundation for an entire story. They had their head down focusing on baby steps only to look up and realize they had finished a marathon. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hackingmusic/message
