President Cyril Ramaphosa says the Ford Motor Company's latest 15-point-8-billion-rand investment into the South African economy is a show of confidence in the country's potential. This after Ford Motor South Africa revealed that it would be investing one-billion-dollars into the expansion and development of its assembly plant in Silverton. The investment is expected to create eight to ten thousand new job opportunities in the surrounding community. Ramaphosa was addressing the media during an oversight visit at the Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone construction site in Pretoria

What to do? Revive the Hummer, duh. And replace the old 10-mile-per gallon diesel engine with an electric powertrain fueled off the grid." says Yahoo! Finance: "(GM) will bring back its Hummer name starting in 2022, according to news reports, adding the monster truck to its GMC lineup. There will be no gas- or diesel-powered version this time, just an electric. GM will supposedly run a Super Bowl ad with NBA wizard LeBron James on Feb. 3 to announce the reincarnation. vA radical battery-powered truck will demonstrate GM has something to show for its EV investments—something critics and buyers can get fired up about. A zero-emission Hummer will also solve a problem for potential buyers who love the muscle but don’t want to be ostracized for belching pollution."   Fool.com says:" Besides the nameplate, GM intends to make the vehicle resemble the earlier Hummer, tapping strongly into brand recognition and nostalgia. Specific Hummer models will include a pickup truck -- probably launched first in late 2021 or early 2022 -- and a large off-road-capable SUV. It recently teamed up with LG Chemical (OTC:LGCLF) to construct a $2.3 billion electric car battery factory in Ohio. Thus, with this new pricing structure in place, an Audi e-tron or Porsche Taycan owner would end up paying about $80 to charge the all-electric SUV from zero to 100%. Considering that these vehicles are capable of traveling just over 200 miles on a charge"   RENAULT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMS THE TWINGO ZE From a Renault press release: "2020 will mark a new stage in its electric offensive with the launch of Twingo Z.E. and the deployment of its new E-Tech hybrid and plug-in hybrid offers."   "Renault finally confirmed the launch of the Renault Twingo ZE for this year." according to PushEVs: "We can expect it to be officially unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show which takes place in 5-15 March 2020. There are some rumors that this car is already being produced and tested on public roads, therefore soon we should starting seeing some spy shots. Previously Renault feared that a Twingo ZE could cannibalize the sales of the ZOE. But now the new Renault ZOE can easily differentiate itself from a smaller and cheaper electric car with its improved interior, WLTP range of 395 km and a price above 30.000 euros. According to BMW, more than 1,000 robots in the body shop and assembly area will be converted to then flexibly assemble the various drive forms on a production line according to demand. BMW will still purchase the battery cells for the i4, from CATL and Samsung SDI among others as reported. Wireless charging at taxi ranks could provide an alternative to plugs and chargepoints, meaning multiple taxis can recharge at once, supporting drivers to charge up more easily. It would also reduce clutter on our streets. Installing wireless chargers at taxi ranks offers drivers the chance to recharge while waiting for their next passengers, so they can help the environment and start their journeys quicker. The technology, allowing for shorter and more frequent bursts of charging. Ford surprised everyone with a shock announcement this week about their five hundred million dollar investment into EV startup Rivian. What will it mean for both brands? We discuss the implications for the auto industry and the future electric models from Ford.

Ford needs help with electric cars (and help if its electric trucks fail), so it dropped a $500M investment in electric pickup startup Rivian. Domino’s sales slowed because of aggressive DoorDash/UberEats promo codes, but shares jumped 5% because the new CEO knows delivery is its DNA. According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico.Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles.
