110. French Nuclear “Oh la la” - Nov23

Redefining Energy

Why should the 97% of non-French listeners of the podcast be interested in the fate of the French nuclear fleet? With 60GW and 56 reactors, the French nuclear fleet is critical to the very existence of a European Power market as it represents 10%-15% of the electricity consumed on the continent and much larger share if you only account for zero carbon sources. And its “health” is a key component of Europe's Security of Supply and Energy price levels. Furthermore, beyond Europe, a well-functioning French nuclear fleet reduces the need for LNG imports. 20 years ago, EDF was the most powerful utility in the world, producing 420TWh of carbon free power and about to be privatised to reach a 200bnEUR valuation. 20 years later, plagued by debt, major outages, financial losses, and poorly timed government interventions, EDF had to re-nationalised. Rather than relitigate the past or engage into sterile discussions about whether nuclear is THE solution, A solution or NOT A solution, we have to live with simple facts: a) for the past 30 years, French nuke has been the backbone of the whole European Energy system b) it almost imploded in 2022 (half of the fleet down at some point) as the worst possible moment: when Russia invaded Ukraine. Going forward, can Europe still rely on the French nuke fleet for Security of Supply? Can nuclear continue to provide cheap power or will it become uncompetitive? How does nuclear cope with an increasingly volatile power markets where the key word is now “Flexibility”? We bring in a Breton sailor, Emeric de Vigan. Emeric is a former trader at EDF Energy where he oversaw the short-term power trading of the entire nuclear fleet. He is now head of Kpler Energy, a leading subscription-based data and analytics platform delivering real-time market intelligence for diverse commodities and their transportation. In summary, Emeric really knows what he is talking about. With Gerard and Laurent, Emeric delivers a dispassionate, clinical, and sometimes technical conversation about the future of the French nuclear fleet.PS: after the recording of this episode, EDF and the French government found an agreement on the price of power for the current nuclear fleet: 70EUR/MWh (vs 42EUR/MWh under ARENH) More here: https://www.ft.com/content/e2fc3abf-4803-4561-8ef2-0c77fd2d07a8----If you want to know more about the current political and economic conundrum about French nuclear, please read this excellent presentation by Yves Marignac, Institut Negawatt https://seafile.institut-negawatt.com/f/a565a5e04bcc4615b301/This podcast is powered by Axpo an international leader in providing sustainable energy solutions for the future.

What Circularity Means: Interview With Rachel Sheila Kan

Lead with Purpose

On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung, talks to Rachel Sheila Kan, a fashion circularity expert, TEDx speaker, author and founder of Circular Earth and the Ecosystem Incubator, to talk about what circularity means to her. KEY TAKEAWAYS Circularity is beyond the product. We could create a product that is circular, but it could create unintended consequences just in its coming to being. We have to think about all of the other things attached to it: locality, where it's coming from, what kind of emissions and things are happening? Socially, what's happening in the supply chain and the people that you're working with?  Two decades ago the industry was about fast fashion, value and producing loads and loads of stuff that we knew wouldn't ever be able to be purchased. We're still seeing that now, of course. But I got to a point where I was actually sickened to design stuff anymore, so I moved into sustainability about seven years ago and started creating events bringing people together on a grass-roots level so you could find vintage or eco brands, and sew and swap stuff.  I try to apply sustainability to brands, either as they're starting up or medium-sized brands looking to transition. I saw that whatever we were doing in that space was just plastering over the current economic system and the systems that we have in this world, and that it would never get to the level it needed to in order to reduce overproduction to make repair and upcycling a viable economic solution. I saw that individually those companies could do something, but maybe coming together might be a better or different way. So we built the Ecosystem Incubator to start that co-creation, to have businesses, sole traders, brands, garment techs, designers, growers, CMT units come together and co-create that new future. In the future, I see us moving away from centralised production to work more in a decentralised, locality way. You can see it already with reshoring back to the UK, creating new economies in different localities. But, that also needs to be balanced by reimagining economies in all the places we've extracted from for so many years. There needs to be a relocation of economics at the same time. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's interconnected between industries, I attend EDF Energy events and Thames Water events, it's a continuous learning journey.'‘It seems silly to over-buy a ton of stuff we don't need. There are many brands with stock sitting in their warehouses, and that's not helping anyone in the environmental space or otherwise.'‘We can't keep doing the same things that we did before. We can't keep extracting all the nutrients from one place to be able to push it into our world and extract economic growth from it.'‘The Ecosystem has always been in the mindset of a forest: Each tree has its own niche and speciality but underground they're sharing collective knowledge and nutrients.' ABOUT THE GUEST Rachel Sheila Kan: I have been working in the fashion Industry for over 2 decades in design and design /project management.  Very much a hands-on practitioner working with supply chain, and designing brands from identity, through to development, supply, landing and into promotion.  I have worked on multi products with a specialist knowledge in kidswear and womenswear. I was used to working with team designers, technicians, and marketing personnel. I moved into sustainability around 5 years ago where I developed in action with brands and small businesses, and I then finally focused on my consultancy Circular Earth. At Circular Earth we help brands to create parallel sustainable brands or start up with sustainability at the heart – let us be your mission control.  I also lecture on sustainability and ethics in business at university level. Throughout my studies I realised that the very things that we were creating in the sustainability space were a mere sticking plaster to the systems that we were standing on, therefore often counterproductive and coming back to the old systemic ways that do not have them thrive. Indeed, fashion can be a competitive cut throat industry, so we wanted to turn this on its head and have many come together for lasting change. So, I started to work with regenerative structuring and new economics that I had learnt in my studies to create a collaborative called ‘'The Ecosystem Incubator'' where different players in the small fashion and business space start to collaborate on many of the things that they find tough to do in isolation.  The Ecosystem is based on living systems thinking where we model the workings of a forest – to create a forest of fashion – in a metaphorical sense. Website: https://rskan.com/  ABOUT THE HOST Tze Ching started her entrepreneurial journey back in 2007 with the launch of a sustainable clothing and home furnishing ecommerce business. Next, she created a sustainable fashion brand. In 2019, she launched a social enterprise to help raise awareness about the negative impact of fashion at schools and colleges.  Through the 15-year journey, she learned so much, but easily the most meaningful lesson learned was about the importance of marketing. She now focuses on channelling those insights to help others succeed, through We Disrupt Agency, a business coaching, mentoring and digital marketing company.  Tze Ching's mission is to create a community of global change makers and to contribute to positive change in both people and planet. On this episode of The Business Mastermind Podcast, Gavin is joined by David Taylor and Clair Carpenter, the co-authors of the book ‘BLISS: How to Be Truly Happy For the Rest of Your Life', to talk about happiness. David and Clair come at the world from very different points of view, David sees it through the lens of possibility, potential and purpose, Clair sees it through the rigour of science and robust research. But, both are looking for what we should be focussing on to find happiness.   KEY TAKEAWAYS It's time to put aside people's differences on psychology and psychiatry and focus on find out what works for individual people. The biggest parallel virus to Covid is mental health and we're absolutely dedicated to getting people to living the rest of their lives pretty happy. Western schooling systems are all set up to test you against a completely fictional thing that you're meant to have achieved and then you're made to focus on the bits you're not so good at. This entire way that our society is engendered and hard wired impacts the way individuals see things, and it filters into science and psychiatry. There's nothing ‘wrong' with individuals you're trying to ‘fix', it's all about playing to their strengths. We judge things from our experience, education and imagination and because we don't immediately remember everything that's happened in our lives, imagination plays a big part, and if there's a 50/50 leaning on something we tend to lean to the negativity for the protection of ourselves. It's very difficult to switch it the other way, but Clair has given a working EMBR (event, meaning, behaviour, reaction) model that gives a level playing field for real life, real people in real life situations that they can apply a gap of infinite possibility: is this definition you're giving going to help you and other people, or is it not? When we feel in the thick of a very powerful emotion, sometimes we become that emotion, rather than feel it, acknowledge it, put it to one side and take a step back and time to breathe. What if it didn't have this meaning? What if I could interpret id differently? What if I stepped into somebody else's shoes and saw this information from a different point of view? I thin those two things can really help recast and reattribute meaning. What we've all learned through lockdown is the magic of human connection, and we've all been missing that. It's enabled me to get to a point where I really value that rather than take it for granted. Rather than looking back over the last 18 months and thing “haven't I missed a lot?”, I'm coming forward from today and thinking “I've really gained a lot”. The mind is everything, what you think you do become.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Psychology is a lot of the answer that we can make life extremely happy and blissful.' ‘No event has any meaning other than the meaning you choose to give it.' ‘One of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves if “what if?” Go and make a cup of tea.' ‘If you address the happiness of those who need help first, that's when other things happen, especially in corporate environments.' ‘We achieve success every single day, if people recorded their successes from the moment the woke up, you'd get into an abundance mindset. When the Glasgow climate jamboree ended after two weeks, COP26 President Alok Sharma broke down in tears and seemed to apologise for his failure to get countries like China and India on side. But now that the dust has settled from Glasgow's COP26 summit, but how will this one be remembered? There were protestors, no shows from state leaders and new commitments were made whilst backroom wrangling had mixed results. What are the key factors that make these summits a success? Given the mammoth task ahead of the countries that have committed to tacking climate change, is it realistic to expect real change? In this podcast, Cindy Yu is joined by seasoned professionals in climate change and sustainability. Harriet Lamb, CBE and CEO of Ashden which is an organisation that supports and promotes sustainable energy enterprises. Sizewell C consents manager Stephen Mannings and head of regional affairs Tom McGarry talked to NCE former features editor Nadine Buddoo and current features editor Sotiris Kanaris about EDF Energy's efforts to alleviate concerns about the project's environmental impact.   Like Sizewell B, the proposed nuclear power station Sizewell C will be located within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For the construction of the new power station, Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) land will also be needed. For these reasons, local communities and environmental groups have raised concerns over the environmental impact of the project.   During the podcast discussion, Stephen and Tom run through several measures devised to minimise the construction phase's environmental impact. They also talk about the proposed plant design changes aiming to preserve a specific area of habitat and lower disturbance to wildlife.   EDF Energy has also invested in creating new habitat, the Aldhurst Farm, which Stephen explains in more detail on the podcast.   The Engineers Collective is powered by Bentley Systems. Around the world, engineers and architects, constructors and owner-operators are using Bentley's software solutions to accelerate project delivery and improve asset performance for transportation infrastructure that sustains our economy and our environment. Show #692   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 9th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BMW RAMPS UP ELECTRIC CAR MOTOR OUTPUT AT BAVARIA PLANT "BMW said on Thursday it is increasing production of electric vehicle powertrain components at its plant in Dingolfing, Bavaria, and raising its staff numbers to 1,400 this year, from 600 at present." says Reuters: "Responding to tougher emissions rules and the threat of multi-million euro fines, carmakers are stepping up efforts to sell electric and hybrid cars. BMW aims for hybrid and electric cars to make up a quarter of new vehicle registrations by 2021. The number of employees assembling electric motors in Dingolfing will rise to 1,400 by the end of 2020, and is slated to grow to 2,000 over the mid-term, BMW added."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bmw-electric/bmw-raises-electric-car-components-capacity-at-bavarian-plant-idUSKBN2000Y0   VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER DEBUT PUSHED BACK "If you were eagerly awaiting Volkswagen to pull the veil off its ID 4 all-electric crossover, it appears you will have to wait a bit longer. Initially expected to debut at the New York auto show in mid-April, its reveal has now apparently been postponed and it may be shown at the Detroit auto show, in June of this year." says InsideEVs: "Autocar doesn’t make the Detroit reveal like a sure thing, though, so the car may be shown even closer to the end of 2020. We also don’t know if VW is going to reveal both the regular ID 4 and the coupe like ID 5 version at the same time - the latter is actually the model previewed by the ID Crozz concept. The ID.4 and ID.5 will also be the first Volkswagen models to bear the GTX electric vehicle performance badge, but the automaker will surely make a GTX version of the ID.3 and other models in the ID series (especially since the ID.3 is the EV equivalent of the Golf and GTX is more or less the EV equivalent of GTI)."   https://insideevs.com/news/397413/vw-id4-debut-postponed-detroit/   TESLA SOARS IN GERMANY WITH MASSIVE 168% INCREASE IN REGISTRATIONS IN JANUARY "Tesla registrations in Germany increased by 168% in January, helped by strong demand for the Model 3" according to Teslarati: "Tesla leading the pack of imported vehicles is a good sign for Elon Musk’s electric car company. With the construction of Giga Berlin expected to set to start as early as mid-March, Tesla can only expect more organic demand when Germans and electric vehicle enthusiasts from nearby European countries see firsthand more of its vehicles on the road."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-sales-germany-january-2020/   TESLA CHINA TO START PRODUCTION IN GIGA SHANGHAI ON FEB. 10 ""esla plans to start production from its Giga Shanghai facility in China on Monday, Feb. 10. After the coronavirus outbreak, the Tesla factory in China shut down productions from Feb. 2." says International Business Times: " Tesla Vice President Tao Lin announced this week that the factory would resume productions on Feb. 10. However, the deliveries of Tesla cars would take a hit. On Saturday, the Shanghai government stated that it would consult the banks to give loans with manageable interest rates to small businesses and exempt companies in the hospitality sector from any value-added taxes, which is badly hit after the outbreak. Similar benefits are applicable to foreign firms."   https://www.ibtimes.com/coronavirus-outbreak-tesla-china-start-production-giga-shanghai-feb-10-2918589   NIKOLA TRE TO BUILD ELECTRIC TRUCKS AT IVECO IN GERMANY "Iveco-owner CNH Industrial and Nikola Motor will build the Nikola Tre in battery-electric and fuel cell version at the Iveco plant in Ulm, Germany. The first e-trucks to go into production from 2021 are the battery-electric 4×2 and 6×2 vehicles. The fuel cell version is planned for 2023." says electrive: "The two partner companies have formed a joint venture called Nikola Tre – like the truck – which will manufacture the battery-electric model with a modular battery that can be configured to a capacity of up to 720 kWh. The electric drive has a maximum continuous output of 480 kW. Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2021. The Nikola Tre, which was adapted for the European market, has little in common with the company’s US models shown so far; instead, it is based on Iveco’s popular S-Way platform."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/07/nikola-tre-to-be-built-in-ulm-germany/   SWITCHING TO AN ELECTRIC CAR COULD SAVE YOU £41,000 "DRIVERS could save more than £40,000 by switching to an electric car, a new investigation has revealed. It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnston announced that a ban on new petrol and diesel models would be introduced in 2035." writes The Sun: "Recent data from EDF Energy found Brits could save £41,000 in fuel over their lifetime by getting behind the wheel of an electric vehicle. Drivers on average spend more than £56,000 on filling up their car with petrol or diesel over the course of their lives. But if they drove an electric model, they would only spend around £15,000 over the same time period."   https://www.thesun.co.uk/motors/10904797/switchin-electric-car-save-fuel-costs/   THE TAX BREAK THAT COULD SAVE YOU 40% ON AN ELECTRIC CAR "There is potentially, however, something of a financial game-changer for driving an electric car, which might save 32 per cent to 42 per cent of the monthly cost of getting behind the wheel. The key to this is salary sacrifice, the same system many employers use for pension contributions, cycle to work schemes, and childcare vouchers, allowing workers to effectively pay tax-free." says Simon at ThisIsMoney: "This saves you both national insurance and income tax, which for a basic rate taxpayer is 32 per cent and a higher rate taxpayer 42 per cent. But a special exemption was put in place for ultra-low emission vehicles to encourage motorists to swap their petrol and diesel cars for electric ones. This meant that the government theoretically had no problem with your employer allowing you to pay for an electric car from untaxed income through salary sacrifice. At the moment, the benefit-in-kind, or BiK rate, on a pure electric car is 16 per cent and the way that the maths works means much of the tax benefit of the salary sacrifice is eaten up by the charge. This changes in April though, when electric cars will have a zero BiK rate and salary sacrifice benefits can be felt in full. The monthly cost for a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus with no deposit down over 48 months could be roughly £530, but under salary sacrifice for a higher rate taxpayer it effectively costs 42 per cent less, or £307 of the wages they would normally see."   https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-7970367/The-electric-car-salary-sacrifice-tax-break-save-40.html   WHICH EUROPEAN COUNTRY HAS THE MOST ELECTRIC CAR CHARGERS? # When looking at the number of fast charging points, the top 10 European countries were:   Germany – 5,074 fast chargers United Kingdom – 4,008 fast chargers Norway – 3,426 fast chargers France – 1,975 fast chargers Spain – 1,242 fast chargers Netherlands – 1,069 fast chargers Sweden – 1,023 fast chargers Switzerland – 846 fast chargers Italy – 833 fast chargers Austria – 575 fast chargers   https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/best-driving-roads-for-electric-cars   NATSO, CHARGEPOINT MAP OUT CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR 4,000 TRAVEL PLAZAS "ChargePoint, which has more than 108,000 electric vehicle charging stations, and NATSO, the trade association for truck stops and travel plazas, will collaborate to build out a network of 4,000 off-highway charging stations, including in rural America, by 2030." reports Frieghtwaves.com: "The two will use money from the Volkswagen “Dieselgate” emissions scandal settlement plus grants and plaza owner investment of up to $1 billion to knit the mostly direct current (DC) fast-charging network, which ChargePoint will manage. ChargePoint and NATSO will work together to identify public and private sources to support the build-out. The deadline is Feb. 26 to apply for Volkswagen Settlement Appendix D Funds, money set aside by the German automaker following its 2015 diesel emissions cheating admission."   https://www.freightwaves.com/news/natso-chargepoint-map-out-charging-infrastructure-for-4000-travel-plazas   EXCLUSIVE: FORD’S EV PRODUCT CHIEF REVEALS UPDATES ON MUSTANG MACH-E PROGRESS "Electrek met with Darren Palmer, the product chief for Ford EVs, to learn where things stand. Palmer said that the Mach-E is “close to sign-off” for vehicle engineering. And he confirmed that Ford will hit the 300-mile range target for the long-range version." says Electrek: "Palmer explained that customer focus groups revealed that EV buyers want a 300-mile version. Hitting that number, he said, is an important strategy for converting gas-car owners to electric. He confirmed that 80% of Mustang Mach-E pre-orders are for the long-range model, promising up to 300 miles. Of course, the lower-cost Mach-E versions, and those offering all-wheel-drive, will have between 210 and 270 miles. every Mach-E (and likely every Ford EV) will come with a portable, Level 2, 240-volt charger. It’s a strategy to eliminate the question about what home-charger to buy. Palmer also said that Ford’s test teams are currently taking long all-electric road trips to discover any issues about using highway charging. He said that any problems are documented and fed back to the company’s EV charging-network partners."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/07/exclusive-fords-ev-product-chief-reveals-updates-on-mustang-mach-e-progress/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   MARTIN YOUNG The main reason I purchased a Chevy Volt was because it was time for me to replace an old worn out car, and I didn't want to replace it with old worn out technology in a new wrapper.  I wanted something truly different...something that looked towards the future instead of the past.     Yes, I was concerned about the environment, but on your scale of 1 to 10, I was at most a 5.     And then something interesting happened.     After driving the Volt for a few weeks, and no longer making trips to a gas station where I used to regularly inhale carcinogenic fumes, and noticing all the exhaust coming from other cars and realizing that my car wasn't constantly spewing toxins from its tailpipe, my concerns about the environment started to grow.  So that now, after a year of driving mostly on electricity, on your scale of 1 to 10, I would say my concern for the environment is closer to 10.  And this reveals a truth that we should never lose sight of:  the easiest and most effective way to change a person's attitude is to first change a person's behavior.   DOUG BUTCHER When I found out a few years ago about the terrible air quality in cities, I knew I would eventually go electric. However, it was only when I had a drive in a friend's Leaf that I actually decided to take the plunge. That experience was in September 2019, and I am now the proud owner of a 2016 Leaf. The environment is still a consideration but I'm mostly looking forward to the savings in my pocket now.   MUNAVER I would love to own an EV mainly for the environmental reason and would give it a 10 out of 10 as the main reason to purchase one. Unfortunately I live in Australia where we have a limited range of cars available and no government support.   PETER MOONEY I brought my EV for environmental reasons mostly. Specifically air quality. Running costs were a close second but I doubt I would have bothered changing it if  I didn’t care about the toxic diesel fumes.   JOHN HARCOMBE For me enviroment low 1 out of 10, I just wanted new tech of ev. My wife wanted mini, so when ev mini announced on your show we were both onboard and straight into dealer to put order in. Due April 2020.     STUART JACKSON My decision to move to an EV is entirely motivated by environmental considerations. I use my car a lot for work and feel very guilty about the environmental damage (locally and globally) that it causes.   JIM BAXTER Great show, for the question I would say 10 - the biggest reason I have an Hyundai Ioniq ev lease on order is the environmental issue.  I already have a hybrid and because it is easy and fun to drive, I was going to replace it with a hybrid plug-in but 6 months ago I decided to choose an ev for the environment.   MARK GARNETT Environmental reasons Was absolutely not my reason for going EV, so that’s a “one”. However my awareness and interest in environmental issues is now right up there.   ASEER I do high mileage and feel that switching to EV does mean my emissions has an effect however I will say financially an EV for high mileage make more sense than any other solution and by reducing my toxic emissions helps too.   PHIL KEMP I give that (in 2018) a 7; my wife reckons 8. Other factors included: - urgent need to replace aged ICE - need for something more restful to drive in my declining years - desire for something different; this is likely my last car buy   JOHN FRUHWIRTH Wanting my dream car - 60% Wanting the best car on the used car market for $100k Canadian - 30% Wanting it to be environmentally friendly - 10%   DARREN FINDLAY 9 out 10 Environmental impact of dino juiced propulsion was my primary reason for going EV – I also went veggie at the same time (2 years ago). That said, I love the tech too.   TOM RAFTERY In my case, it was very definitely a 10. I moved to Spain in 2008 and needed to buy a new car. At the time my filter for cars was emissions. The best option available (with a young family and being a single car family) was a Toyota Prius.  I’m the proud owner of a 40kWh Nissan Leaf (and a 5kW solar array).   PETER BRYN Climate change is the absolute top of my list for being an EV enthusiast and buying my Volt. To solve climate change, we need to address coal, oil, and gas. Coal and gas are predominantly used in the power grid, where many alternatives exist - nuclear, wind, solar, and/or gas with carbon sequestration. So, cleaning the power grid isn’t so much a technical challenge as a political one.   MARK RICHARDS Just heard your question of the week, and you asked about how much environment concerns entered into my decision to buy my Bolt and my Volt.  I’d say, similar to you, it is on the list, but not a big part of it.  I’d say 10%.  First was how fun Bolt is to drive.  Second is the technology, I am a nerd, so I love all things tech.  Third was how much money it could save me (btw, after 1 year I saved $2,700 on gas and maintenance).  Fourth was the quiet.  And fifth was the environment.   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m thinking of driving to Italy, 1028 miles and 17 hours. “The first couple of years in business were really tough, and there's no end, just chasing the I'm never going to be done and feeling so anxious and so stressed by it all. I think a lot of women of our generation are just adding things into our to do list. So now I'm going to run a business and now I'm going to have children and now I'm going to write a book or and we're not taking anything out. And at the same time a lot of us are trying to emulate our mothers by being the good friend, the good wife, the good sister, the good mother. I just think it's prime for disaster” Steph Douglas In this episode I talked to Steph Douglas, founder of alternative online gift company Don’t Buy Her Flowers. Steph used to be in the world of marketing and advertising, from working in PR for a government department all the way to being a Marketing Manager for EDF Energy and running their London 2012 Olympic Sponsorship. BUT one day she decided to leave it all behind and follow her dream – setting up her own company called Don't Buy Her Flowers. It all started from an idea she had after having her first son, when everyone bought her flowers. She had gone through what was a demanding 9 months where not only was she pregnant with her first child, but her husband was diagnosed with cancer. So, when the doorbell kept ringing with flowers she thought it wasn’t really the most appropriate thing to give a new mum – something else to look after! She was feeling extremely overwhelmed at the time and thought there must be a way of giving more thoughtful gifts. Firstly, she started a blog to build her audience before roping in family members to help run the business, it's now going from strength to strength. What I loved about this episode is that we really got deep and personal. We talked about the importance of talking about emotions and empathy and doing that through thoughtful presents. Unfortunately, we live in a societ where we don't talk enough about how we feel, and we do not know how to be there for people. And of course, we talked about the more business side of things including what it is like being an entrepreneur starting on your own and the kind of fears that come with it. And you'll see we laugh a lot, and there is just so much that you can learn from her story. #dontbuyherflowers #stepdouglas #femaleentrepreneur #onlinegifts

Today's episode is the first episode of our new podcast, Innovation: An Endless Pursuit, and we’re really excited to share it with you. Here at Bristol Water we’re big believers in Open Innovation. The idea that by openly inviting solutions to our challenges, collaborating across the industry and by sharing our experience, we can deliver better experiences for customers. In this series we’ll be exploring each of the themes from our innovation quest (https://www.bristolwater.co.uk/about-us/innovation/) and sharing our learnings and insights from our journey so far. In each episode Chris Thomas, our Head of Business Improvement and Innovation, will be joined by experts from both Bristol Water and our external innovation network to learn about the latest innovations in Water and where we should be seeking solutions as an industry. In this first episode of our podcast we have a fascinating conversation between Chris and two innovation pioneers, David Ferguson, Head of Digital Innovation at EDF and Jack Lomas, Head of Product at Mott Macdonald Ventures, that we recorded at our inaugural innovation event earlier this year. This focus for this conversation was how to foster innovation in your organisation. The discussion explores many exciting topics including, methods for promoting innovation, priotising ideas, how innovation can be funded and how to create a positive culture of innovation. Jack and David also share their views on which innovations are more hype than substance and we’re sure you’ll be surprised to hear which they choose. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode and look forward to hearing what you think of it. We’re always looking for help and collaboration on our Quest and if you have any comments or thoughts we’d love to hear from you at innovation@Bristolwater.co.uk. About today’s guests: David leads EDF Energy’s Research and Development Team, spearheading the company’s research into cutting-edge digital technologies. His aim is to explore how digital can improve the operational safety and efficiency of EDF Energy’s fleet of power stations and transform the way they serve their customers. A constant focus is the use of technology to enable the sustainable use of energy. In addition to his role at EDF David is a Non-Executive Director of Exeter Science Park, a member of the advisory board for the All Party Parliamentary Group on AI, a Fellow of the RSA and is a contributor to Exeter University’s MBA. Jack leads product within the Smart Infrastructure startup team at Mott MacDonald Digital Ventures. Tasked with driving digital transformation across the business, his team adopts lean methodology to design, develop and release new tech products, applying the team's combined experience in technology, start-ups and infrastructure. Prior to joining Mott MacDonald , Jack co-founded SenSat which streamlines civil infrastructure projects through the use of digital twins. SenSat was identified as Europe’s fasting growing AI start up by Crunchbase and awarded 'Startup of the Year' by New Civil Engineer. Having left his day to day role in SenSat Jack now sits as a shareholder and adviser to the management team. Jack is also a founding board director at Cambridge Wireless, a tech organisation with 400 members including Intel, Amazon and the UK’s leading startups, and founder at Future Engineering Club, a working group for senior industry thought leaders.

Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TOYOTA AND SUZUKI PARTNER ON HYBRIDS AND EVS Toyota and Suzuki on Wednesday said they planned to produce electric vehicles and compact cars for each other to better compete with fast-changing technologies in the global auto industry." According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. They will also join forces in Europe, where Toyota will produce electric vehicles based on its RAV4 SUV crossover and Corolla wagon for Suzuki, while Suzuki will supply Toyota with gasoline engines for compact vehicle models sold in the region."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/20/toyota-suzuki-partner-on-hybrids-evs-building-cars-for-each-o/   HONDA LOGS 15,000 REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST FOR ELECTRIC E PROTOTYPE "Earlier this month, Honda revealed that so far it received 15,000 registrations of interest for the Honda e Prototype. As the number comes from March 5, we guess it could be significantly higher after the Geneva Motor Show." reports InsideEVs.com today: "If the price is significantly higher than average for its subcompact segment (because of the premium interior and battery cost), we would not expect too high of a volume – especially in late 2019. For comparison, BMW is selling less than 37,000 i3 per year globally after a few years on the market and two range extensions.   co.uk, click Cars and then scroll down to Welcome To The Volt Age. "Say goodbye to the past. The next-generation electric car is coming. The new Honda e Prototype previews Honda’s new electric car, which will be available to reserve early in the summer 2019."   https://insideevs.com/honda-15000-honda-e-prototype/   HYUNDAI, KIA, OLA TO BUILD INDIA-SPECIFIC ELECTRIC VEHICLES "India-based Ola ― one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms ― announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group focused on smart mobility solutions and electric vehicle development. The agreement will see the Hyundai, Kia and Ola extensively collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions." "Hyundai Motor Group expects to accelerate its transition from a ‘car manufacturer’ into a ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’, as the partnership’s initiatives will allow it to engage in all aspects across the entire mobility value chain ― including vehicle production, fleet operation and mobility services."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/hyundai-kia-ola-to-build-india-specific-electric-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER INSTALLS UK’S LARGEST WORK CHARGING STATION "Jaguar Land Rover Group has installed at its Gaydon engineering center the UK‘s largest smart charging station for employees. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. In this case, the REGO scheme certifies that Jaguar Land Rover’s entire supply comes from renewable generation.”   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-land-rover-largest-work-charging-station/   TESLA MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE VS. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. If you want all the handy extra features (other than extra range), you can get them for a lot less in the Nissan Leaf Plus SL—especially while Nissan retains its full federal tax credit for the next several months."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122172_tesla-model-3-standard-range-vs-nissan-leaf-plus-what-you-get-for-your-money   NIKOLA CAN ‘EASILY’ DO ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCKS LIKE TESLA SEMI "New Nikola Motor president Mark Russell recently provided some updates on the company’s efforts to establish its hydrogen refueling stations across the United States, as well as his thoughts about rivals like the Tesla Semi and other hybrid trucks like the modified Kenworth-Toyota T680 long-hauler that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January." Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. Tesla doesn’t have anything to compete with us in long-haul"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-rival-nikola-president-interview/   FORD INVESTS $850 MILLION TO PRODUCE NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE US And finally we turn to Electrek for news about Ford: "Ford has announced today new investments in its US facilities for future production of next-generation electric vehicles as well as Ford’s first autonomous vehicles. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico. Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles. This is good news for the future of southeast Michigan, delivering more good-paying manufacturing jobs.”   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. ‘PTSD may always affect me but I get to decide how I react to it.’ Lloyd Dean experienced a horrific car crash leading to PTSD which he now manages through tips he shares on the podcast! Growing up 1 of 7 kids, he describes life as chaotic but filled with creativity and learning to be resilient. As the Head of digital and innovative learning for EDF Energy, Lloyd lives in a masculine world where the stereotype is the thing to strive for: be the strong silent type, who is the main breadwinner who contributes to falseness in groups of men at the pub. A horrific car accident and subsequent PTSD symptoms such as reacting to noise and intrusive thoughts, led him to begin his road to therapy, speaking out and experimenting with tips for being able to cope with a young family and a challenging work life. After experiencing EMDR trauma therapy he realised he may have had a pre-disposition to mental health issues and went on a mindfulness course, noticed the signs early and created the space he needed to accept and cope with his symptoms. A powerful conversation for anyone who’s experienced trauma and wondered how to deal with it, speak about it and get back to being happy and successful. Nuclear energy: a safe bet?

In October 2013, the British government gave a green light to the UK's first nuclear power station in a generation.  It will be built at Hinckley Point in Somerset by a consortium which is led by France's EDF Energy and includes Chinese investors. The government is backing nuclear energy and is guaranteeing to pay £92.50 per megawatt hour for the electricity generated, twice the current wholesale price. Professor Keith Barnham of Imperial College, author of The Burning Answer, says there are many reasons to think this is far from a sound proposition - not only do we not know the carbon footprint of nuclear power, but the price guarantee for the consortium may end up being way above the costs of energy in 10 years time, with the taxpayer having to foot the extra bill. This short podcast is an extended extract from Prof Barnham's interview with Dr Radu Sporea of the Surrey University Advanced Technology Institute, in which they discuss the potential for renewables to meet all our energy needs. You can find the full interview between Keith Barnham and Radu Sporea, Solar power, the burning answer?  It looks at the potential of renewables, in particular solar power.
