Inflammatory diseases are on the rise around the world, and when left unaddressed can turn chronic. Now, doctors are finally starting to pay more attention. But why & when does a beneficial part of our immune system turn against us? Raj Patel & Rupa Marya think it has a lot to do with the world we live in. Their thesis: our bodies are a mirror of a deeper disease in society & the environment. But there's still hope. Topology—the mathematical study of shapes that describes how a donut differs from a donut hole—has turned out to be remarkably relevant to understanding our physical world. For decades, it’s captured the hearts and minds of physicists, who have spent that time uncovering just how deep the connection between topology and physics runs. Among many other things, they’ve unearthed a prediction, born of topology, for a new particle with promising applications to quantum computing. In this episode of Relatively Certain, Dina Genkina sits down with JQI Fellow Jay Sau, an associate professor of physics at UMD, and Johnpierre Paglione, a professor of physics at UMD and the director of the Quantum Materials Center. They take a trip back to the 1980s, when the story of topology in physics began, and arrive at a recent discovery by Paglione and his collaborators of a (possible) topological superconductor. This episode of Relatively Certain was produced by Dina Genkina, Chris Cesare, and Emily Edwards. It features music by Dave Depper, Frequency Decree, Chad Crouch and Scott Holmes. Relatively Certain is a production of the Joint Quantum Institute, a research partnership between the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and you can find it on iTunes, Google Play, Soundcloud or Spotify.

I’m going to do something a little different with this episode. A while back I was interviewed by Jordan River from GrowCast. We chatted about autoflowers and I thought it would be beneficial to post that episode here as well. It aired last August (August 22, 2019 depending on when you’re hearing this episode) and I feel it’s still very relavent so, here it is. My interview from GrowCast with Jordan River. New cannabis clothing line: www.one29collective.com and on Instagram @one29collective I met Tara and her boyfriend (known on Instagram as “InBedWithThePot”) at the Autoflower Cup last year and I’ve got to tell you that they are kind, humble, down to earth people who are very friendly, caring and supportive in the community. What really touched me was the pain and suffering Tara has endured due to various medical problems, and how she was able to stop using dangerous and damaging pharmaceutical drugs with the help of medical cannabis. For me, that’s where the purpose of everything I do resides… to help others grow their own medical cannabis, and, for those who no longer want to damage their body, show them that there are indeed alternatives. Alternatives that, although still linger with the stench of social stigma, help people have a better quality of life. Myself along with millions of others can testify to that very thing. And for me, I’ll take the snarls and pompous negative comments from the pots that love calling the kettle black. The beneficial outcome is worth the stigma to me. Another reason that Tara stands out in the community is her amazing growing skills! She grows autos and photos, and she grows them like a boss. She has also successfully cloned autoflowers, preserving a strain for many generations. Although different than your traditional cloning, it works and I personally think it’s pretty clever. Even though we didn’t get any souvenir orange jumpsuits from our time in the Klink (no, not that kind), we’ve all become different people. Wiser. More mature. More…dramatic. Things take a turn down a side quest while we wait for the big bad stuff to happen, but maybe this “side quest” will prove more useful than it seems on the surface.
