And the key is they're wanting to grow their businesses scale them and also achieve more profit, more wealth, more time off, and, hopefully, a well-oiled business on top of that. 01:35 – The problem she helps solve: The root cause of most of the problems we deal with, with our clients is a lack of clarity. And they don't know what they want to achieve. And they don't have a plan that is attached to that particular idea of clarity. 02:38 – The symptoms of the problem: Actually, most of them that come to us say they're stuck, or they're overwhelmed, or they're not achieving the goals that they were looking for. And I think there are a few others as well. 03:31 – Clients' common mistakes before consulting Gail: One thing is they think if they work more, they're going to solve their problem. And that is never the right solution. So, if they think that that's going to do it, it won't do it. 04:56 – Gail's Valuable Free Action (VFA): There are two things I'd like to share. A: I would tell you that, hands-down, 100%, it is mindset and fear. Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode: “Market when you're the busiest.” -Gail DobyClick To TweetTranscript (Note, this was transcribed using a transcription software and may not reflect the exact words used in the podcast) Tom Poland 00:10 Greetings, everyone, and a very warm welcome to another edition of Marketing the Invisible. I'm Tom Poland beaming out to you from the Sunshine Coast of Australia, joined today by Gail Doby. Gail, a very warm welcome from Down Under. Where are you hanging out? Gail Doby 00:23 In Denver, Colorado. Tom Poland 00:25 Ooh, sounds nice! Starting to warm up now? Gail Doby 00:27 We're actually- we're past this now. So, we're very happy! It's all rain. Tom Poland 00:33 For a while. So, folks, in addition to living in Denver, Colorado, Gail is the author of the book, Your Creative Value Blueprint to Get Paid What You're Worth. She helps designers, architects and other creators increase profitability by multiples up to five times even more. One such person said 512%, which is pretty freakin' amazing! So, the title today is, “How to Sell Your Value in a Competitive Market”. Gail, our seven minutes start now. Question number one, who is your ideal client? Gail Doby 01:10 Well, I think you said it. And its creative entrepreneurs, typically interior designers, lighting designers, and architects. And the key is they're wanting to grow their businesses scale them and also achieve more profit, more wealth, more time off, and, hopefully, a well-oiled business on top of that. Tom Poland 01:28 Perfect! Thank you for that. So, question two, we've got six and a half minutes left. How would you define the problem that you solve for these folks? Gail Doby 01:35 I think the root cause of most of the problems we deal with, with our clients is a lack of clarity. And they don't know what they want to achieve. And they don't have a plan that is attached to that particular idea of clarity. So, we help them achieve a certain plan, a system, a process, build a team, set financial goals, and also build a business model that will help them achieve their goals. Tom Poland 02:02 Something that's systemized and scalable and brings in predictable, high-quality results. Because I imagine a lot of your folks would be just relying on word of mouth and, you know, sort of missing that predictability or certainty around their results. Gail Doby 02:16 Exactly! Tom Poland 02:17 Would that be right? Gail Doby 02:18 It would be absolutely correct. Yes. Tom Poland 02:21 So, let's move on then, question three is- and we've got just five and a half minutes left, plenty of time. In addition to just sort of relying on word of mouth and wishing and hoping and praying, what would you say are some of the typical symptoms that your ideal clients are experiencing before finding a solution? Gail Doby 02:38 I love that question! Actually, most of them that come to us say they're stuck, or they're overwhelmed, or they're not achieving the goals that they were looking for. And I think there are a few others as well. They tend to be on a roller coaster of client leads, and you know all about that with your business. And with that, they get a roller coaster of financial results. A lot of fear, and chaos. They're busy. They're not productive. They have a lot of anxiety. They're overworked. And I think grumpy would be a good word for it at the end. Tom Poland 03:10 Yeah, absolutely! Okay, thank you for that. I remember those days! It's not a fun place to be. So, folks, if that sounds like you, keep listening out because we're coming up with a solution and two questions time. But before we get there, Gail, question four, and four and a half minutes left, what are some of the common mistakes that your clients tell you that they made prior to finding you? Gail Doby 03:31 Well, I think one thing is they think if they work more, they're going to solve their problem. And that is never the right solution. So, if they think that that's going to do it, it won't do it. And I think that if you look at the root cause, again, is that reactive vs. proactive, and they get into the mode of looking at their cell phone in the morning, and that determines their plan for the day, which means that they're not really very productive. So those are a couple of the issues that I see happening with a lot of our clients Tom Poland 04:00 Proactive vs. reactive, that sums it up really well. So, you also find that some of them make the mistake of thinking that they just have to cut their prices? Gail Doby 04:10 Well, you know, they might, but that's not a good answer. That's, in fact, a poor answer. Most of the time, we want them to raise their rates because that helps them attract the right people to their business. And so, we tell them to do, probably, the opposite of whatever they're thinking they should do. Tom Poland 04:27 Well, that actually kind of makes sense. I mean, yeah and what they've done has gotten to where they are, and they don't like where they are, so they really should probably do something different. That's very interesting. Very interesting! So, what you're saying is that you know, in some cases, you'll be attracting fewer clients with cheaper prices than you will with higher prices. So, let's go to question five, just over three minutes left. What's one valuable free action that someone could take that's not going to solve the whole solution, they might need to work with you for that, but, at least, it might start them in the right direction? Gail Doby 04:56 I think there are two things I'd like to share. The first one is to take only ideal clients. And if you don't know who those people are, we have a free resource that we'll share at the end. And also, the second thing is to market when you're the busiest. And I tell my clients that they need to have at least 10 hours of marketing a week. And if you're not doing that, either you or someone on your team or you're outsourcing, then you are going to have a rollercoaster ride. It will not be a lot of fun; it'll be very stressful. Tom Poland 05:26 Yeah. It can be a lot of fun at the top, but when you're streaming down, revenue-wise, not so much. Bad anxiety. So, let's go on to question six, which is the valuable free resource. Where can people go to find out more about what you've just been talking about now? What's the URL you can give us? Gail Doby 05:43 Well, it's really simple. It's gaildoby.com/poland, like your name, and it's a great toolkit. It has four different tools in it, one of which is the ideal client profile. It doesn't matter what kind of business you're in, you should have this for your business and have it well identified. It will make sure you get the right kind of people attracted to you. Tom Poland 06:05 There's actually a lot on that page, folks. It's gaildoby, D-O-B-Y, .com/poland, with one L, same as the country next to Russia, actually, next to Ukraine, I should say. But let's not go there, at the moment. Determine your pricing precisely and confidently, select from multiple profit options, eliminate guesswork, and calculate your design fee. Yes, your design fee is great, but there's an awful lot there. Gaildoby.com/poland. 90 seconds left, Gail. What's the one question I should have asked you but didn't? Gail Doby 06:37 I think this is a great question that I would love to have you ask, but I'll ask it for you. What's the reason most people don't reach their financial goals? Tom Poland 06:47 And what is the reason why most people don't reach their financial goals? Gail Doby 06:50 I would tell you that, hands-down, 100%, it is mindset and fear. And the reason that a lot of people never get past where they are at this very moment and don't get the results that they want is that they're afraid of spending money on themselves because they look at that as an expense instead of something that will return money to them many times over. Tom Poland 07:13 Fantastic! Gail Doby, I really appreciate your wisdom and your insights, and your generous share. Folks, get your butts over, digital bucks over to gaildoby.com/poland. Gail, thanks again. Gail Doby 07:26 Thank you so much, Tom. Tom Poland 07:29 Thanks for checking out our Marketing The Invisible podcast. Hello, and welcome to the Chaise Lounge! Today we have a double-feature episode for your. This week Nick May sits down with Todd Raymond, a young residential designer on the rise. Furthermore, Nick catches up with our dear friend Gail Doby. Todd's interest in design began in his childhood, when his grandmother gifted him an AD magazine. Growing up, he faced many obstacles that prevented him from studying architecture, as well as other endeavors that caught his interest. After many years of distractions, Todd returned to college go pursue a career in architecture. He went on to work on several design firms and participate in ambitious projects. This experience gave him the confidence to open his own firm, Studio Todd Raymond. Todd is big on networking to market himself. He will seize any opportunity to form a connection that can lead to a successful path. One of his focus points is the customer experience, as great service allows for loyal clients. To help in making that experience flow, Todd makes sure to be transparent about his prices and the client's budget; he is not afraid of discussing the money side of business. As he says, even the multi-billionaire customer has an amount they're willing to spend. Be sure to follow Todd on Instagram @studiotoddraymond, and check his developing portfolio at studiotoddraymond.com Gail Doby, CEO of Gail Doby Coaching & Consulting, returns with a call-to-action. Prior to founding their current business, Gail founded and ran a luxury interior design firm in Denver, Colorado. So welcome to the show. GAIL DOBY: Thank you so much for having us. We're excited. It's awesome to have you guys. So, let's start with you, Gail. Tell me a little bit about your entrepreneurial journey. How did you become an entrepreneur and how did you partner up with Erin? GAIL DOBY: Well, I think I would have to say accidentally, I became an entrepreneur. I think I've always had it in my blood. I'm sure it's like you as well, Steve. But I had been starting to do a little bit of design work for some friends. And they started asking me to come and help them with their homes. And then they would fly me places wherever they were living, and I would start working on their homes. And finally, I came home one day and I said to my husband, you know what? I think I need to get a design degree. I already had a finance degree. And I think I need to go ahead and become an interior designer. So that's how I became a designer and started my first business. So, and it was some years after that. So, I was about 92 when I finished my degree in design. And then it was probably, I think it was, what year was that, Erin? It was 2005? Erin Maney, Creative Commons, USA ERIN WEIR: It was 2021 and we've been together for 16 years. I like to say that I started working for Gil and I was five. So that keeps me like in my early twenties, but that's just a little joke that we like to play. So yeah. That would be child labor that's illegal. make you an entrepreneur, or there is a distinction that not all interior designers are entrepreneurs, some of them may be technicians. I don't know. How does this work in your profession? GAIL DOBY: Oh, I love that you asked me that question. I really do, because I have this conversation with our designers all the time, and I tell them, you are the CEO of your business, and you just happen to be doing design work. And so I came to that realization some years into doing it. And Aaron joined me after I'd been running my business for a while. And that was the realization that I had is that sometimes we're accidental entrepreneurs, like as I mentioned at the beginning of the call. And I though had the business background but I didn't know how to be an entrepreneur. They do not teach that in design school. They do not teach that in business school. At least they didn't at that time when I was getting my first degree. So yeah, I think we have to kind of decide that we are going to be business people and then we become good at whatever it is that we happen to be providing in service. Sometimes, we are accidental entrepreneurs, lacking the formal training in entrepreneurship. However, with a business background and the right mindset, we can excel in our creative endeavors.Share on X ERIN WEIR: And after working with Gail for so many years, I do think that there is just something that is just, she was born with it, right? Like she was born with that entrepreneurial spirit and that really big vision thinking. So, I think that that's part of the mold that you came out of, Gail, too. GAIL DOBY: Probably. Okay, so Gail, so you're a visionary. So for your clients who enroll in your coaching program and who you teach th...

Also, on the Episode is Gail Doby of Gail Doby Coaching and Consulting to talk about the 2018 Genius Exchange this July. But first, we're kicking the episode off with Nick's surprise phone call to the winner of #MakeMyChaise! It's an incredible design that we can't wait to share with you and all of BDNY. Early Beginnings Janna was first exposed to interior design while in high school in Austin, TX. Her father started developing apartments and condos in the area. Once in college at ASU, he would often put her to work when she would come visit him, and Janna discovered that she loved furniture, textiles and the entire design experience. After graduating college with a degree in Interior Design, she moved back to Austin and began working at a local architecture firm. When she first started working, the field of interior design was progressing. Now 30 yrs later, she finds that interior designers are becoming more renowned and recognized in the industry. The Firm Today Peel Paulson Design Studio specializes in multi-family design with clients in Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. She employs a staff of six interior designers as well as a procurement person, a receptionist, and two interns. Her firm is brought on at the beginning of a construction project with her design team responsible for everything from initial space planning to furniture selection and installation. She finds that working in multi-family design is very similar to the hospitality design experience. The end result is all about drama and experience but is also timeless. A typical design must be able to last about 10 years before the next major renovation, and she and her team are constantly looking for the next great thing. Current Design Trends Today, living spaces are getting smaller while owners devote more square footage to the amenity and common areas. The goal remains to create a unique and striking but timeless interior for an elevated living experience. Vinyl plank tends to be very popular, as it is affordable and durable but gives the warmth and experience of real wood. Granite and quartz are popular countertop material -- and recently, the cost of granite has decreased, making it an affordable choice. Much of her hours are spent on furniture selection. She says that this is where the brand's personality can shine through and is typically tailored to the tenant's lifestyle preferences. Business Development Coming from a development family, Janna originally entered into this sector because of her father. She now defines herself as a professional shopper, traveling around the world for unique sources of furniture to make her projects unique. Traveling abroad helps to keep her on the forefront of up and coming design trends, most recently attending Light Build in Frankfurt, Germany. Competing for project awards also helps attract clients. She was recently awarded Best Multifamily Housing in Austin for Lenox Boardwalk.  Developers have since sought her out directly due to her award-winning work on this project. Now in business for 29 years, she feels established but still prefers to maintain a visual presence in the marketplace. Next up, Janna says that she would like to work on the public element of the design experience and enter into hotel design. Also, Nick hits a home run when he suddenly asks Gail Doby for extended early bird tickets to the Interior Design Summit. Gail not only grants Nick his wish, but she agrees to give one lucky winner a free ticket.   Tune in and see how you can become that lucky winner and hear more about the Design Summit! Getting to Know Gail Gail was born in Iowa but grew up and went to college in Arkansas. Today, Gail is a successful certified coach and consultant.  In today's podcast, she discusses the business of the business and her upcoming Interior Design Summit. Gail  expounds on one of her many favorite books on business, Rocket Fuel, authored by Gino Wickman and Mark C. Winters. Gail stresses one of the book's ideas: the importance of business owners to have a second in command. She says she is fortunate and can't imagine her business without her second in command, Erin Wearer.  Erin is a project manager. She's a detailed person while Gail is more of the visionary person creating products and coaching clients. Gail thinks of herself as a business therapist. She helps firms set goals, meet those goals, and exceed those goals. One question that many designers struggle with is how to set their fees for their services. Gail explains how she works with her design clients so they can realize how the pie should be divided when running the business, paying yourself, and profitability. Mingling with Gail and other Top Designers at the Interior Design Summit A lot of the coaching that Gail gives clients can be gained at the Design Summit.  The summit will feature a host of talented designers who have much to share on setting fees, sales scripting, and  growing your design business. Listen to the podcast to see how you can get an early bird special price or even be one of the lucky winners. Meeting Laura Michaels Next, Nick meets up with Laura Michaels of Laura Michaels Design in New York City at ICFF. Laura's design firm is located in Greenwich, Connecticut.  Laura took a peculiar path to get where she is today. She had a love for fashion, which she inherited from her very chic and modern grandmother. It's natural that she would major in Fashion Buying. But the road took a turn toward interior design when her neighbors adored her sense of interior style and sought her out for style interior questions and solutions. She thought, ‘I am doing a great job for my friends; I might as well start a business in interior design.' Laura gives us fabulous advice from setting fees, running a business, reading potential clients and knowing their style. She's prompt at understanding her client and addressing the space. Most of the time, she chooses to custom build the home furnishing to meet the client's need, but also to give the space a ‘one of a kind' designed space. Just recently she was named one of the top 50 designers in New York Spaces. The second advancement was to open a storefront rather than work from home. This move had many advantages such as more room for samples, but most importantly meeting and showing clients her creations. Thanks for listening!
