They're two vastly different types of leaders; Visionaries generate the big ideas, and Integrators bring everything together to make ideas realities. Winters is back with new entrepreneurial duos who are using Rocket Fuel to get more out of their businesses, only this time, he's teaching you the tools and concepts each duo could have used to maximize their potential even faster.

Working 100+ hours a week nearly burned Gregg out. If running your recruitment business is stressing you out, Gregg's story may be able to help you. I am pleased to be joined by Gregg Salkovitch. Gregg is intentionally growing his recruitment firm to become a lifestyle business. Along the way, he learned a lot of things to achieve his goal while gaining more lifestyle freedom. You will hear insightful strategies on how Gregg is building his team and delegating tasks. We also discussed why it is critical to hire a COO to help you in scaling your business. After a career as a top sales performer for 3 consecutive companies, Gregg co-founded a sales recruitment agency to combine the 2 things he loves most in business: sales and helping people. In 6 years, Gregg grew his company organically with no outside funding to 60 employees, reaching the Inc. 5000 for fastest growing companies 3 consecutive times. He then started a separate recruiting company, Right Choice Resources, which specifically focuses on the placement of salespeople, executives, marketing, account management, and customer success. Episode Outline and Highlights [01:38] Gregg's journey of how he got into recruiting. [04:30] When being laid off is a blessing in disguise. [10:18] Transitioning from individual contributor to a recruitment business owner: Gregg shares the challenges that they overcame. [14:51] Scaling team to 60 people in six years. [17:07] Gregg reveals his key success factors. [20:06] Character over resume: hiring strategies to get the right people. [35:11] Discussion on growth strategies for a lifestyle business. [37:02] When to hire a COO role to scale your business. [42:49] Make less money in the short term to get long-term benefits. [48:04] Transferrable skills from sales to recruiting. [52:57] What is next for Gregg and his business? Getting Laid Off Pushed Gregg Into a Recruiting Career Gregg shared an amazing story of resilience on how he got into the recruiting industry. Getting laid off unexpectedly pushed Gregg into a recruiting career. He loved his sales job and was blindsided when he was laid off after 4 years as a top performer. This made interviewing difficult as he had to overcome the perception that he must have underperformed despite being an actual top performer. He also had non-compete from his old company which prevented him from staying in the same industry. Facing these challenges pushed Greg to explore a new path by using his sales skills to transition into recruiting. This pivot into recruiting ended up being life-changing for Greg's career. You will hear how he used skills he learned from sales to be an effective recruiter. He even leverages his experience of being laid off to engage with candidates. “I think when I speak to candidates and we're seeing more layoffs right now, I have major empathy for them because it's not just like, I've sold like you. I've stood at trade shows for 5 hours like you. I've been laid off like you. And that really helps me, in my opinion, become a better recruiter because I've actually lived it.” Though difficult, getting laid off opened new opportunities that Greg capitalized on. In his words, “It was a blessing in disguise. It was probably the best thing that ever happened.” Character Over Credentials: Building an All-Star Team to Scale Another topic that will also resonate with a lot of business owners is strategies for hiring recruiters and team members to scale. Gregg focuses on hiring people based on character and shared values over resume credentials. He wants people he genuinely enjoys working with. He told the story of how hiring a trusted person without recruiting experience worked well for their business. This strategy works well for Gregg and his team. He has grown his first recruiting company (with no outside funding) to 60 employees, reaching the Inc. 5000 for Fastest-Growing Companies 3 times! These are some of my takeaways from their strategy: Vetting the work ethic, values, and coachability is crucial Greg wants employees he has a natural rapport A team aligned in values helps ensure an ethical, collaborative culture Why Hiring a COO is Critical If you are a solo recruitment entrepreneur and planning to scale, hiring a COO is critical. This has been true for both Gregg and me, where hiring an effective COO became a game changer. A lot of us may be able to relate to what Gregg said: “I've been doing it by myself for twelve years and I've never really had help. And it's been exhausting. I mean, it's been an amazing ride, but it's been exhausting. And I like to have my recruiters focus on recruiting. I mean, that's what keeps the lights on and not worrying about doing side projects and onboarding employees and dealing with maybe a tough client, which I know is going to wear them down a little bit. So that's why I decided to hire somebody in operations, is that I have my recruiters recruiting. I'm doing everything else, and to do everything else, it's a lot. I just need a helping hand.” Gregg is intentionally growing his firm slowly to have a lifestyle business. Hiring a COO helps him to focus on sales while delegating operations. Offloading operational tasks and delegating things that he does not enjoy doing creates more freedom and a better lifestyle. This resonates well with me. Some business owners may be apprehensive to take this approach because paying someone else can translate to lesser profit. But keep in mind that making less in the short term creates more freedom to earn much more in the long term. Not every business owner can do all the tasks their business requires without burnout. This brings up the opportunity to find out what type of person you might need to fill these gaps and bring your strengths together to thrive. That's why episode 85 of Female Founders Breaking Boundaries is about Integrator / COO / DOO / OBM - What's the difference and which do you need right now?Have you ever felt like you were WAY too busy, stressed out, burnt out, and overwhelmed, so you were advised to delegate some tasks to take things off your plate and free up some time? Except, maybe it didn't work. If getting out of the day-to-day in your business was as simple as hiring more people, then why are you still feeling overwhelmed and burned out? You are not alone! Sometimes, simply delegating tasks doesn't work and instead shifts your workload from “doing” to “managing.”I invite you to use the exercise that our own C-Suite clients use to take the first step in turning your team into a well-oiled, self-managed machine- and get you out of the delegation catch-22. Download the exercise here to get started! In this episode of Female Founders Breaking Boundaries, I'm sharing the importance of understanding these different roles and actionable steps you can take right now to start to fill the position you need that will drive your business forward. Some of the things I cover in this episode are:Celebrating Katalin Karikó, the biochemist from Hungary whose perseverance led to a major contribution to today's COVID vaccines. The differences between an integrator, a COO, a DOO, or an OBM- how they overlap one another and how they can help your business in different ways.Questions to ask yourself to better determine which one of these positions is right for your business at the current moment.Talking about cancel culture and how it ties into the consumer's choice to support the businesses they believe in.Keep challenging those stale, outdated, and inflexible business practices and embrace these new ways of achieving success that leaves room for your life in the process. Thanks for listening! Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of tools, advice, resources, support, and encouragement that resonates with the modern business woman and to hear even more about the points outlined above. If you enjoyed this episode, take a screenshot of the episode to share and tag me! Can we really do it all?I've thought a lot about this motherload question. It's a big, existential question – but it can also feel like a loaded question. Sometimes it seems to imply that, to do it all, you have to do it ALL, with no help from anyone else. And if that's the question – can you do it all with no help – I think the answer is no.But what if we took a step back and looked at that question as a broader life design question. Is it possible to love your life fully? Is it possible for you to have everything you want: the career; the partnership; the relationship with your children? If that's what that means, then I think the answer is yes. I do think it's possible.Resources & LinksIf you want to go more in-depth in organizational leadership, be sure to check out Rocket Fuel by Gino Wickman and Mark C. Here is why - A lot of you likely fall on the visionary end of the spectrum. You have a head full of ideas and a heart full of passion. You took the entrepreneurial leap and gave birth to what would become the business you own and lead today. You saw opportunities where others didn't and you have a natural ability to see what you COULD build. But here's the thing. Visionaries can wreck companies. It's possible to have too much vision, too many ideas. A Visionary can easily rip their team in a million directions or load them down with an unreasonable number of projects. Visionaries are also typically pretty terrible with holding accountability. And your business pays for that. The answer is to find an integrator. BUT Just because you find an integrator, doesn't mean your business will thrive. The Visionary/Integrator relationship is like a marriage. The Fractional CMO route is great for marketers looking to serve multiple clients at a high level with each paying $3,000-$15,000 per month. This week, Casey Stanton talks about his Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, The Fractional CMO Method, and what you can learn from it. You'll learn about how to overcome the three biggest challenges of being a Fractional CMO: having control of your pipeline, getting your clients the results they need, and the length of your contracts. Takeaways: The problem with being a consultant is the constant revolving door of prospecting for new clients when your contract runs out, whereas a Fractional CMO can serve as the CMO for multiple companies for extended periods, even months or years. You have to have complete control over your pipeline. That is your key to success as a Fractional CMO. You are the only one that can get you from where you are now to your goal. Many consultants only have a 30-90 day playbook to use and once it's done, so is their contract. By serving your clients more effectively with the Fractional CMO Method, you will extend the length of your contracts. While branding and web design are great and important parts of marketing, if you're more focused on them than the results that they generate, you're going to find yourself out of a job. You need to generate actual results for your clients that are outsized to your cost. Producing that big impact for them is how you stick around. A marketing agency is not a Fractional CMO. A Fractional CMO is a person who is a stakeholder inside the business whose job it is to build and lead the marketing team. A company doesn't get successful by being well-rounded and doing all of the marketing campaigns, it becomes successful by being deadly at a few of them and building a dynamic marketing team inside the organization. Mark Owens is an active Real Estate Investor in the Baltimore Maryland area, where he owns over 100 rental units. Mark was lost in the rat race just trying to figure out his plan until a few months after he bought his first rental (back in 2002). Since he bought his first rental Mark has fully realized the power of the REI path, and the freedom that comes with it. He learned that you don't have to follow the same path as your peers, and regardless of what you've done in the past you CAN beat it, if you maintain the right mindset. Click on the image to see more of Laura's designs! Gail Doby and Laura Michaels Today, it's a doubleheader when Nick chats with Gail Doby of Gail Doby Coaching and Consulting and Laura Michaels of Laura Michaels Design. On this podcast, we get sound advice from two keen and creative minds in the business. Also, Nick hits a home run when he suddenly asks Gail Doby for extended early bird tickets to the Interior Design Summit. Gail not only grants Nick his wish, but she agrees to give one lucky winner a free ticket. Tune in and see how you can become that lucky winner and hear more about the Design Summit! Getting to Know Gail Gail was born in Iowa but grew up and went to college in Arkansas. Today, Gail is a successful certified coach and consultant. In today's podcast, she discusses the business of the business and her upcoming Interior Design Summit. Gail expounds on one of her many favorite books on business, Rocket Fuel, authored by Gino Wickman and Mark C. Winters. Gail stresses one of the book's ideas: the importance of business owners to have a second in command. She says she is fortunate and can't imagine her business without her second in command, Erin Wearer. Erin is a project manager. She's a detailed person while Gail is more of the visionary person creating products and coaching clients. Gail thinks of herself as a business therapist. She helps firms set goals, meet those goals, and exceed those goals. One question that many designers struggle with is how to set their fees for their services. Gail explains how she works with her design clients so they can realize how the pie should be divided when running the business, paying yourself, and profitability. Mingling with Gail and other Top Designers at the Interior Design Summit A lot of the coaching that Gail gives clients can be gained at the Design Summit. The summit will feature a host of talented designers who have much to share on setting fees, sales scripting, and growing your design business. Listen to the podcast to see how you can get an early bird special price or even be one of the lucky winners. Meeting Laura Michaels Next, Nick meets up with Laura Michaels of Laura Michaels Design in New York City at ICFF. Laura's design firm is located in Greenwich, Connecticut. Laura took a peculiar path to get where she is today. She had a love for fashion, which she inherited from her very chic and modern grandmother. It's natural that she would major in Fashion Buying. But the road took a turn toward interior design when her neighbors adored her sense of interior style and sought her out for style interior questions and solutions. She thought, ‘I am doing a great job for my friends; I might as well start a business in interior design.' Laura gives us fabulous advice from setting fees, running a business, reading potential clients and knowing their style. She's prompt at understanding her client and addressing the space. Most of the time, she chooses to custom build the home furnishing to meet the client's need, but also to give the space a ‘one of a kind' designed space. Just recently she was named one of the top 50 designers in New York Spaces. The second advancement was to open a storefront rather than work from home. This move had many advantages such as more room for samples, but most importantly meeting and showing clients her creations. Thanks for listening!
