Every single day, nearly 60 million blog posts are published and five billion YouTube videos are watched. Are you always trying to edge out search results to be on top? Discover how to reframe your mindset when it comes to content marketing. Today, we're talking to Garrett Moon, CoSchedule CEO, about how to handle such competition when it comes to content marketing and his new book, 10X Marketing Formula: Your Blueprint for Creating Competition-Free Content That Stands Out and Gets Results.   Some of the highlights of the show include: Marketers are responsible for bringing in leads, sales, people - big tasks - to support core business metrics. Garrett's book describes taking the formula, process, tips and tricks, and things that work and don't for CoSchedule and making them available to anybody to use and implement in their business and marketing process. Gartner's Hype Cycle: How new technology is adopted. When content marketing took shape a few years back, all of a sudden, everyone was adopting it and reworking their marketing teams, creating content, doing blogging, building email lists, and other tasks. Content marketing made a lot of promises to us. Now, Garrett believes we are entering the trough of disillusionment. We adopted content marketing, but what about those big promises that were made? What about the results? Why are you not getting the results you were promised? How do marketing teams provide business value? Content marketing needs to be reinvented. Garrett describes the "copy cat" epidemic in marketing. There is so much free content online where pieces of strategies, tactics, and other items are copied and pasted. However, it does not create an entire picture or blueprint. The goal is to create a framework from start to finish to find something unique to your business that only you can do and be successful with. Something that stands out and gets results. Creating Competition-Free Content: Not only is your business and products in competition, but your marketing is in competition with other marketing. Find a way to break past that barrier created by competitors. The book, Blue Ocean Strategy, refers to the Bloody Red Ocean, which is full of competition and where businesses are fighting each other to stand out - they're at war with each other. However, the Blue Ocean is wide-open and uncontested. You're free to swim around and move about because you have successfully been able to differentiate yourself from the competition. To differentiate your content marketing, focus on your topics, how you create content, and how to connect that content and share it with your customers. 10X reference: look at what you are doing and ask if what you are doing will help your team multiply results, including increasing sales leads and the number of visitors to your Website. Marketing teams need to focus on 10x growth rather than increments of 10 percent improvements. Marketing teams are designed to produce results, not worry about risks. Agile Manifesto: focuses on how software development could be better. A powerful way to cause engineers to rethink and reframe what they're doing. 10X Manifesto: focuses on how so much of marketing is about mindset when it comes to how we do and approach things. Results or Die: 10X marketers work in a results or die oriented business, not 10 percenters allowed. Many think of marketing as a process for things they do - marketing is the blog, social media channels, conference booth, etc. There's all these deliverables that a marketing team creates and hands off to others, such as the sales and support teams. Marketers are not here to produce Web ads or build a Website. They're here to help produce business results and help grow companies. 10X marketers understand that growth requires failure, strength is in progress, not perfection. Teams that embrace failure (fail fast) understand that it is not about failure but acknowledging imperfection. Marketing comes with assumptions: assume methods used to get the message out will work; assume there's the right mix of email ads; assume messages are right; assume the timeline is correct. Ever realize how much you are guessing? The problem is in the marketing plan. It becomes a risk-removal tool that leads to pointing fingers and placing blame on others. Instead of a plan, start with a goal. To start down the 10X marketing path, list what work you did this week. Are these 10X or 10 percent activities? To plan a podcast, one needs to answer the following questions: who is the audience, why would someone listen to it, what is the content, cadence, and format, and how will production be executed? On today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, we talk with Kris Nelson, head of sales for CoSchedule.com, about how businesses can move from "click, try, buy" to having a full-fledged sales team. CoSchedule is a SaaS-based marketing platform that helps marketers to stay organized through a combination of content calendar, a product, project management solutions and execution via social campaigns and email campaigns. CoSchedule took the time to focus on true growth and the company has seen tremendous results. Prior to reaching that point, however, the business, which began as a "click, try and buy," didn't even have a sales team. When "click, try, and buy" works Initially, they released the product as a straightforward "click, try and buy," product because it made sense at the time. They also designed it for small teams and individuals. The level of product and the price point didn't really dictate a need for a dedicated sales team. [01:26] As the product progressed and became more complicated, however, it became apparent that they needed a sales team to help the clients really understand how CoSchedule could benefit them. It was simply a natural progression to establish a sales force as the product grew and the price point increased, especially with some of the advanced plans. They moved away from the "click, try and buy," and toward a professional marketing team and into a standard sales cycle. [03:17] Bringing whiskey to a Kool-Aid party I've always thought it was a waste of time and resources to have the sales reps focus on low-end sales, think $15 a month kind of stuff because customers don't need help making a decision at the price point. Higher end products are different. Companies who ask customers to pay more become more concerned with the quality of the product, and that's when you need a sales team. It is truly an overkill to engage someone in a formalized, professional sales cycle at some of the lower price points. At the higher price points, it makes total sense. You have to be sure you are asking the right questions of the organization to make sure your product is a fit. The sale is nice but long-term happy customers are the true goal. [04:25] Move toward a sales force Kris credits CEO and co-founder of CoSchedule, Garrett Moon, as the person who helped take the company where it is today. It began with a series of phone calls to prospects to see if the market was viable and to see if it made sense to move the price point. Once that was established as true, Moon hired more people, including Kris, and the sales process was on its way. [05:58] Kris says that CoSchedule is still an extremely heavy inbound model. They still decide the best fit for each client, whether that be the "click, try and buy," model for the lower level plans, or working with a sales rep for the higher level plans. Kris really had to learn and understand the buying process of the companies that use CoSchedule to determine how many real touch points would be needed from a sales standpoint to be effective.   Three-call process CoSchedule has a three-call process in place now. The first, known as the discovery call, allows the sales team to learn more about the client's business, teach them about CoSchedule and then try to determine at a really high level if there is a potential business fit. If everything matches from a budget standpoint and a use case standpoint, they move forward with the second call. The second call is a full-scale demonstration of the product. It provides a great chance for the client to invite all their team members who might use the tool. Kris and his team go through the product with a fine-toothed comb and answer any questions. During this timeframe, they give the potential clients access to a free trial of CoSchedule; a chance to kick the tires. If the team is still checking the right boxes by the end they move into the pricing discussion. [07:28] CoSchedule provides a great tool for marketing organizations and other small organizations to all get on the same page. Their customers often refer to CoSchedule as the single source of truth for all their marketing efforts. Whether it's a social media campaign, or a large trade show event, or a podcast, CoSchedule acts as the organization hub for everything. [08:55] Although they designed CoSchedule with a marketing focus, Kris believes it is also beneficial from an internal project management standpoint. It puts a formal process in place. All the checklist items and all the behind-the-scenes items that go into a large-scale effort are put into a central location with CoSchedule. It unites everyone involved with the effort on the same page.   Everyone can see what works well, what needs more work, and where the team must focus to get the product out the door. [09:53] Building a sales team Growing a sales team, of course, presents a challenge because there are as many different ways that salespeople sell and lots of ways that people sell effectively. Kris works to understand how his team sells best and to accelerate that process and help them get better every day. He scales the number of reps on his sales team based on demand. The number of sales calls, for example, on a rep's calendar really does determine the growth of that team. Kris says they rely on the marketers to continually charge forward with fresh, hot leads so that they can then continue to add more in sales. #013: How to Execute a Content Marketing Plan Well

Content Marketing. Either you already have a plan in place, you're actively avoiding it, or you have no idea where to begin. If you've been online for any length of time, you'll know that content marketing is the currency of digital marketing and what makes the Internet go round. It's why there are 300 million + blogs active in the world and why SEO (another topic for another day) is so important. But there are a few problems with content marketing: >> It's too easy to get caught up in the creation and forget to make it beneficial to your business. >> With so many experts teaching online businesses "how" to do content marketing, it's easy to get paralyzed and quit before you get started. If you're going to have a content marketing strategy that works you need to do this: 1. Get crystal clear on what your content marketing should look like. Do you want to create cat videos with voiceovers? A top 10 list each week? A book review? A video interview series? A stream of conscious audio about your expert topic? The sky is the limit. The key to creating content is to make it A) FUN and B) something you'll enjoy creating, not something everyone else tells you to do. 2. Know why you want to create content. Don't EVER do something because someone tells you to do something. (Myself included). The thing about being an entrepreneur is that YOU are the boss and you make the shots. My goal (and ostensibly the goal of other consultants and strategists you surround yourself with) is to help you make informed decisions and strategic moves that equal growth and increased revenue in your business. But, you have to also see that whatever you do WILL make sense for your business and is in alignment with who you are as an entrepreneur. 3. Who the content you want to create intended for? The more you niche down for a specific type of person in a specific business with a specific problem, the more likely you'll find your rabid fans and they'll want to work with you/purchase what you're offering. 4. How do you want to create content? This comes down to what medium do you want to use? This is tied to #1 above, but this is where you decide what platform/format are you going to deliver this on. Ideas of content marketing examples: - A blog (obvs) - A podcast - A video series - A weekly Facebook Live show - An audio clip - An interview series - List format - Book reviews - A weekly local event - Video-based tutorials - Visual marketing (through Instagram) - Free wallpaper (backgrounds) for phones (especially if you're a designer, funny or motivational biz) - Music playlists - Slideshare - Conferences - Summits - A guide - A magazine - A book - Your own column - Teach classes - Webinars - Online course - Education center - Ebook - Downloadable PDF - Infographics The point is to pick something that feels like you and will be fun to execute, or it'll never happen. THEN put up blinders and don't worry about what everyone else is doing in your market. And write it down. It gives it more credibility in your mind that you're going to do this. 5. Is someone already doing this exact thing in your market? If they are, it's OK, but you have to either do it slightly different or better to stand out and make content marketing in this same fashion actually benefit your business. A book I can't recommend highly enough: 10X Marketing Formula by Garrett Moon (this is my Amazon affiliate link). And if you're on Kindle Unlimited, it's FREE! 6. Find topics that are resonating with people online. Look at the comments section, look at Quora, hop in Facebook groups. Anytime a question is asked, it means that someone wasn't clear or thorough enough, and that's your opening. What a different spin on what's out there and a favorite? How can you be so thorough in how you help your audience that's different than everyone else. Something most people don't realize about marketing is the more helpful you are and specific in your responses, the more desperate people will be to work with you. There's a funny thing that happens in our brain. Instead of greedily absorbing everything you put out and walking away feeling like their problem is solved, the person consuming your content will be flabbergasted that you're THIS helpful and their brain tells them: If they are giving me this much stuff for free, think of how much more amazing it would be to actually work with them. You are not giving it all way. A good resource on this and knowing how to operate in a space where you're not in competition with anyone else is Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim.  7. Create a marketing strategy plan that works for you. Basically, I'm telling you my favorite mantra: You do you. This means if you're type A and like to operate with a color-coded calendar that's 6 weeks ahead of your production schedule, then you're going to want to find a system that does that exact thing so you are successful. But some of you are going to want to write down ideas on sticky notes or on your phone and create the night before and cross your fingers that you remembered to do everything. (While not optimal, it gets the job done.) The key here is to set up a system (yes, something that's repeatable) and consistently follow it. If you can't be consistent, then don't even bother doing it. I'm not even kidding. There's too much. 8. Freaking promote your content people.  Most people who create content have zero strategies for how to promote it and nobody knows the content exists.  Here are seven ideas for how to promote what you're creating: - Brainstorm all the places you could share content. (I also call this brain dump or word vomit often). *Make a note if there are restrictions on when and where you can share content (cough, cough Facebook groups) - Look at your best channels for visibility. Where are you already doing a great job at being out there? - Commit to sharing it in at least 5 places each time you create something. Most of us stop at our email list, FB biz page and sometimes a friend. - Start a spreadsheet or a tracking system to track your content. Make a note of the title, theme, keywords, links, etc. so you can refer it on other posts or when topics come up, etc. and it's easy to access it. You can also merge related content into an epic optin, etc. - Make sure Google Analytics is set up on your site so you know what's working. Most places you can add it through Google Tag Manager in the head of your website, through a plugin if you're on Wordpress like me, or in the setup section of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) website builders. It's the best free website analytics tool out there. - Schedule it to be shared on channels that repeat with tools like Smarterqueue, MeetEdgar, Hootsuite, Pinterest. Content strategy is amazing for your business because once you post it, it's searchable and can be found over and over again to new people. You can always and update it and add to it at any time. It's also what makes SEO happen for your business, and allows you to get organic traffic to your site for free. Now go get into action and commit do something sustainable.

Development is never done. Your customers always need to see new features and they expect the software to get better and more powerful over time, not stay the same. The blog posts that drive traffic aren’t always the most valuable ones. And traffic isn’t always the best signifier of access to some customer segments. If you’re focused on two things, you’re not focused on anything. You can’t focus 100% on two things. Action Steps: Base your business decisions on growth velocity long-term versus just short-term happiness for certain customers. Be constantly focused on growth and moving upward. Learn to delegate and how to manage and trust people. Coach your talent to be good. Garrett said: “You have to learn to really understand the problem and then the emotional reasons that that user might buy a product versus ask them would they buy. Create a re-sharing plan. Garrett shares a 10x example: we wrote a blog post that got a 500-600% increase in engagement just by resharing it on a consistent schedule. We created a resharing plan so every time we publish a new piece of content, it goes out 60 days into the future. In today's startup world Considering I run a distributed shop in today's startup world, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that a  talented team can find success no matter where they are. Today's guest shares what it's like to launch a new product alongside a client services business  and all the juicy details in between. One thing that really sticks out is building a product that solves your own need first. Sounds so cliche, but it's a great way to test and validate a new idea. At the end of the day, at least you can still use it for your business and that's how Garrett and his team launched CoSchedule. An alternative to WordPress Something else that might come as a surprise — Todaymade has their own CMS. Gasp! You're not using WordPress?! Some of the projects they launch do not require the overhead or standard features of a traditional WordPress install. Though they often integrate the blogging platform with their content management system it's not always the perfect fit. We'll discuss what that's like when negotiating with customers.
