Episode (140) of the podcast Walk Talk Listen will delve into the forthcoming book "Gratitude, Injury and Repair in a Pandemic Age: an Interreligious dialogue" featuring insights from Michael Trice. Michael holds the positions of Founding Director at the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement and Spehar-Halligan Professor at Seattle University. Trice was appointed Director and Professor at the STM Center for Religious Wisdom & World Affairs in July 2019 and later assumed the same roles at the Seattle University Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement in July 2021. As a Faculty-Administrator, Trice is a professionally trained theologian with extensive experience in leading teams focused on public theology's impact on society. His approach as a Constructive Theologian is rooted in interdisciplinary and integrationist methodologies, addressing contemporary theological challenges. Trice has served on national and international boards, including as Secretary of the Parliament of the World's Religions, a member of the United Nations Environmental Programme Religion-Science Consortium, and part of the Vatican Covid-19 Commission Ecology Working Group. His career spans 30 years in public theology, including a role as Associate Executive for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in the office of Ecumenical and Inter-religious Relations (2004-2011), where he also represented Bishop Mark Hanson on President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Trice's leadership focuses on egalitarian, strengths-based approaches and discernment. He leads a diverse and international Center Advisory Council in the Pacific Northwest and regularly publishes in Constructive Theology, particularly on theological responses to pluralism. His leadership at the Center aligns with Seattle University's Strategic Vision (2020-2025), the Society of Jesus General Congregation 34, key external donors, and a commitment to holistic personal development. In 2018, Trice undertook a sabbatical project exploring society's evolving relationship with theological education and organized religion, and the increasing interest in virtual learning for public theology. This led to the creation of Religica in October 2018, a platform emphasizing podcasts and blogcasts with influential figures at the intersection of religion and society. Religica integrates into the work of the Center, hosting scholarly projects, testing theological hypotheses, and serving as a hub for diverse religious and spiritual traditions. Looking forward, the Center, under Trice's guidance, aims to develop as a comprehensive platform for public theology, fostering ecumenical and interreligious engagement in alignment with Seattle University's mission. Trice's role at the university encompasses teaching, research, scholarship, and service, all unified under his identity as a constructive theologian engaged with both the university and the wider world. Dive into the conundrums and riddles of Spanish politics with our latest riveting episode. Picture this: a high-stakes election, an unexpected coalition, and a political landscape teetering on the edge of ungovernability. In a plot twist that kept the nation on edge, the anticipated "right-wing tsunami" fell short, leaving the ruling socialists hanging by a thread. As the political chess game unfolds, alliances shift, and the spotlight turns to a liberal-separatist party holding the key to the caretaking Prime Minister's second mandate. The drama reaches its climax with an unprecedented deal, an amnesty broadly deemed unconstitutional, and a nation grappling with heightened polarization. Joining us are two seasoned Spain-watchers, Michael Reid and William Chislett, to unravel the twists and turns with insider perspectives garnered throughout decades covering post-Francoist Spain. Our podcast, while now on a slower release schedule, aims to deliver each episode with impact, allowing listeners to savor the intrigue. Don't miss out on the unraveling of Spain's constitutional compact and the gripping insights into a modern European country in flux. Pablo Iglesias was the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain from 2020 until 2021. For the first time, my guest and I take a look at a figure from Europe's modern left: Iglesias was the leader and co-founder of anti-austerity party Podemos- "we can" in Spanish. Although Podemos and Iglesias did not topple the Socialist Party and sweep to power as Syriza did in Greece, they have entered government alongside them, and to some extent have been successful in shifting Spain's economic policy leftward. Iglesias, whose rather petty infighting and sniping quickly alienated many Spaniards from him, has now left politics. However, Podemos remains crucial to understanding how Europe's politics has changed since 2008. The melding together of unbridled economic and social liberalism, which seemed hyper-dominant in 90s and 2000s, has been replaced with a politics both more left-wing and more right-wing than what preceded it. My guest for today is Michael Reid. Michael is a senior editor at the Economist, where he writes on matters mostly related to Latin America but also to Spain. He is also the author of a new book Spain: The Trials & Triumphs of a Modern European Country.

“If only mine were the last drop of Spanish blood to be spilled in civil strife. God willing, may the Spanish people at peace, so replete with extraordinary virtue, at last find homeland, bread and justice”. Who among today's Spaniards could possibly disown this quote? The man who uttered in November 1936 shortly before being shot by firing squad, in whose tombstone the epitaph is inscribed, is José Antonio Primo de Rivera. The current left-wing government of Spain has different plans for his bodily remains. As part of its so-called law of democratic memory, approved last summer, Primo de Rivera will be disinterred this week from his tomb at what used to be called the Valley of the Fallen—renamed Valle de Cuelgamuros by the same bill—incinerated, and his ashes will be relocated to the San Isidro monastery in Madrid. So what does the government of Pedro Sánchez fault Primo de Rivera for? Although he ended his life on the aforecited conciliatory note—and even though he lived through only six months of the civil war from prison before being executed by the Second Republic, which viewed him as a threat—Primo de Rivera remains a standard-bearer of 20th century Spanish fascism, someone historians see as having laid the idealogical groundwork for Franco, who went on to rule for 40 years upon winning the Civil War. He is the latest target of a sweeping effort, unfolding since the previous socialist government in the late 2000s, to settle the scores of these tumultuous decades of Spain's history. These bills do various things. They rename streets and monuments. By setting up DNA banks, they enable families to trace, find and give a proper burial to Republican victims of Francoist repression buried in mass graves. And lastly, they reframe the way History is taught, depicting the Second Republic (1931-1939) as the unimpeachable defender of freedom and democracy against Franco's fascist villains. This week, we will navigate this treacherous topic by inquiring about Franco's exact place in Spain's public consciousness, exploring the demographics of this issue, and questioning whether Spain's history can be so neatly framed as a black-or-white story of good versus evil. We are joined by two distinguished hispanists. On one side of the line, Michael Reid, a longtime regular at The Economist and the author most recently of Spain: The Trials and Tribulations of a Modern European Country (2023), with Yale University Press. On the other side of the line we have with us Nigel Townson, a professor of History at Complutense University in Madrid.
