If you're above a certain age, you recall when the world of music reviewing existed beyond the print pantheon of Robert Christgau, David Fricke, and Greil Marcus. In other words, reviewing music was an actual job, and almost every newspaper or magazine had someone who did that. Gorman's gateway to music examination began as a music writer for his hometown rag, The Waterbury Republican, in Waterbury, Connecticut. Very quickly, Bechard set about blazing the creative path that has led him from “The Brass City” of Waterbury to the flashy world of Hollywood, to editorial vices of the New York City Publishing world, and eventually to independent narrative and documentary filmmaking. Gorman has made a name for himself in the world of documentaries with the blog Too Loud proclaiming: “What makes Gorman Bechard's documentaries work is that he takes these high falutin film concepts and uses them for film documentaries. While Bechard is an obvious fan of his subject, he shows them as is, and doesn't try to show them glossed over or hyped up." Gorman stopped by to chat with Keith about all his music documentaries. It's been called “The greatest rock concert that wasn't” – “sex, drugs, and NO rock & roll.” Hear the amazing story of how tens of thousands of would-be concertgoers converged on the tiny CT town of Middlefield – home of the Powder Ridge ski area – despite the fact that a court injunction had cancelled the show. The story is told by Waterbury native and international renowned filmmaker Gorman Bechard, who's producing a film on the concert.
In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger of the Connecticut Historical Society takes you back to the greatest rock concert that never happened. In 1970, a planned 3-day rock concert at Powder Ridge in Middlefield was cancelled after an injunction by the town. But tens of thousands of young people showed up anyway and proceeded to have one hell of a party. Belanger speaks with filmmaker Gorman Bechard, who's working on a documentary about Powder Ridge. Gorman peels back the many layers of this story, including a shady promoter, the town's grudge against a property owner, and the one famous musician who braved the police to show up and perform -- with an amp hooked up to a Mister Softee truck. Repeat Revisitor Jeff Frame also joins the conversation because he would disown Ben as a friend if he didn't get the invite. I have a few friends who are no fans of Record Store Day, but I love it. Yes, everyday is Record Store Day for me, but it is one of the few days of the year that I’m a social butterfly. I absolutely love the bonding of music geeks in the lines outside stores, and over the years I’ve actually made some friendships out of these same people who brave the elements on this day. We actually kind of look out for each other. If one of us is looking for something quite rare, it’s not unusual for another one of us to grab it for that person. I had that happen just this last week when I arrived a few minutes later than usual, but really needed to get a copy of a certain release. For me, this year’s version of the holiday may have been the best ever. I’ve never had a list so long of titles that I “needed”. Plus, my name is on one of them (the Jay Bennett two-record set that included Gorman Bechard’s “Where Is Jay Bennett” on DVD). Besides the obligatory Replacements live album, guitarist Bob Stinson saw the release of a record […]
For a large percentage of Wilco fans, the glory days of that band were in the late 90’s and early 00’s, with classic albums such as Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It’s no coincidence that those records, along with collaborations with Billy Bragg on previously-unrecorded Woody Guthrie tunes, featured multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett. And when I say multi-instrumentalist, I don’t mean he can set down his guitar to play piano on a few tracks. Bennett was a savant. He was a man who could pretty much turn any object into a tuneful tool.Bennett was fired from Wilco in 2001 during the latter stages of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s creation, and his dismissal was controversially included in 2002’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” documentary. After a series of critically acclaimed solo albums, Bennett tragically passed away in 2009.Bennett’s story is finally being told with this week’s release of “Where Are You, Jay Bennett?”, and co-directors Gorman Bechard and Fred Uhter are interviewed in this week’s episode about a film that Bechard says he made to “right the wrongs” of that previous documentary. Besides his controversial dismissal from Wilco, Jay’s entire life is showcased, from his mom proudly showing his […]

Almost 12 years to the day after the very first attempt at a podcast, this week markes the 500th episode! To celebrate, I let the listeners take over! The call was made on all social media platforms to suggest bands or songs that were discovered via this show, and those results are reflected in this week’s playlist. Many listeners simply submitted the songs of their choice. Others accompanied their picks with extremly complimentary emails. But a handful actually sent in audio tributes to the show! No matter how these messages were sent, they warmed the heart of this host. I’m blown away by the kind words, and I was especially happy to get some audio from Max, the voice you hear at the beginning and end of each and every show. Due to Gorman Bechard’s appearance last week, this month’s new release episode was bumped back a week. But this delay turned out to be for the benefit of the show, as it allowed for me to include some brand new tracks by The Replacements. Well, not brand new, of course, as they’re defunct but today marked the release of the Deluxe Edition box set of Pleased To Meet Me. Along with a remaster of the original record, this box set is full of demos and outtakes, and tonight’s show kicks off with a handful of songs that didn’t originally make the cut. After that it’s the typical collection of great new punk, indie, garage, and Americana releases. Some of the highlights include new albums by the likes of Lydia Loveless, Drive-By Truckers, and Bob Mould. There’s also the usual lengthy section devoted to new music from Rum Bar Records. How does Lou keep finding these great new bands? After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs

It’s always a lot of fun when Gorman Bechard appears on The Ledge, and this week was no exception. He’s got two brand new documentaries that were released this past Tuesday, and both are pretty fantastic. Pizza: A Love Story is all about the legendary New Haven pizza, and the award-winning trio of family businesses that created the edible delights that I’ve personally heard Gorman ramble on and on about for well over a decade. New Haven historian Colin M. Caplan sits in on this portion of the show to talk about the research that went into the creation of this film. The other film, Seniors: A Dogumentary is as perfect of a feel-good story as one can possibly make. How can you not love a film that collects a number of tales involving such amazing elderly dogs? Much of the film centers around the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, an organization that houses and fosters elderly dogs, but there’s other fabulous dog tales such as the heartwarming tale of Chaser, who proves why he is generally considered the smartest dog in the world. Dean Falcone, who created the music on both films, also chats about his innovative idea to […]

Called "An important film of staggering genius that needed to be made," Pizza, A Love Story has been selling out film festival screenings from Washington State to Alabama. Work on the film began in 2008, when Bechard and longtime friend Dean Falcone, both self-acknowledged pizza snobs, decided it was time to turn the camera on the only pizza that matters. I’m sure it’s to nobody’s surprise that the new Replacements box set, Dead Man’s Pop, is the featured release on tonight’s show. Obviously this would be the case no matter what the quality of the music on said box, but in this case a close look is definitely warranted. It’s everything a Replacements fan could desire. This week’s show features set focused on each of the four discs of the box. Disc one is the new mix of Don’t Tell a Soul, and it’s such a sonic upgrade. It actually sounds like a Replacements album after all the studio gimmicky that cluttered the initial album is given the heave ho. To contrast the original with the new versions, I’ve included snippets of the Don’t Tell a Soul versions before each track. I’ve also utilized Color Me Obsessed director Gorman Bechard’s full-length interview with producer (and new mixer) Matt Wallace to get even more in-depth in the what he and the band originally wanted with this record. But that’s not all. Other bands released box sets this week, and a few other records of “vault” material has seen its way to the stores. A little band from Liverpool is celebrating the […]

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack 56 This week we hang out with Sarah Shook and the Disarmers to discuss music, movies and along the way build our own awesome soundtrack. And as we realize we all just wanna lay in the back of the van and go on road trips, we also mention… dancing on the beach, very very strict conservative parents, I’m sure it was lyrical content, the movie star, movies warp you in a different way, Gorman Bechard, these little homemade speaker boxes, Werner Herzog, rolling numbers, way out of time, Interpol, no… the movie is terrible - you just fast forward to that part, I like the cover to this, What it Takes: film en douze tableaux, record collections, Frank Zappa, Sarah Shook and the Devil, hippy parents, having your own documentary, homeschooled, singing with your forehead, listen to cassette tapes, Mary Ann, the precursor to raves, the zither, Grizzly Man, Oscar loser, a different kind of Tom Cruise movie, 6x9 Jensens, it’s like trying to pick out chips in the chip aisle, head buried in the sand, very little guidance, Antics and cross-promoting with Pepsi. “Oh my gosh… so I saw that when I was a kid - and I became obsessed with it! Like I wanted to recreate that!” For more on Sarah Shook and the Disarmers go to: https://www.disarmers.com/
Father of the Bride is Vampire Weekend's fourth studio album, their first in nearly six years, and their first for a major label. It has been called a "masterpiece" and a "multi-layered dissertation on the world's ills." It's also been called "mild" and "some of the worst ideas the band has ever put to tape." The real question is, though: Is Vampire Weekend still cool? And then: Gorman Bechard's Pizza, A Love Story has its New Haven premiere in a few weeks at this year's NHdocs documentary film festival. Lydia Loveless ia a singer-songwriter from Ohio known for her “blast it to the back of the room” voice. She sat with Rhett while in Boston to talk about her early life as a musician, grappling with writer’s block and self-imposed obstacles, and that time she tried stand up comedy. She’s been writing and playing music since she was 14, and at the tender age of 28, is learning how to slow down and get comfortable with herself. Lydia has toured with artists such as the Old 97s, Supersuckers, Jason Isbell, Iron & Wine, and Drive-By-Truckers. Her music has been praised by Rolling Stone, NPR, Pitchfork, SPIN, Stereogum, Chicago Tribune, and more. She was the subject of the 2016 documentary Who Is Lydia Loveless?, directed by Gorman Bechard.

Today’s show is all about PIZZA, A LOVE STORY, a new documentary from local filmmaker Gorman Bechard and producers Colin Caplan and Dean Falcone that is all about just why, oh why, the small New England city we call home has three of the best pizza places in the world, all within a few blocks of one another. Host Tom Breen talks with them about about their research into Pepe’s, Sally’s and Modern, and about how America’s century-long love affair with pizza has been influenced by a small group of family-owned, Italian-American restaurants based out of New Haven.
Our guest today is Gorman Bechard, director of acclaimed films on NC greats Archers of Loaf, the Replacements, the late great Grant Hart of Husker Du and Lydia Loveless. Recently he's completed a documentary on Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. Two songs are included in this podcast: a Lydia Loveless tune called "Heaven" from the vinyl only EP: "Live from the documentary Who Is Lydia Loveless?" The other is a Jay Bennett track entitled, "It Might Have Looked Like We Were Dancing from his LP "The Beloved Enemy."
Ohio-born singer/songwriter Lydia Loveless has been hailed by Rolling Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, NPR and Stereogum, with the latter of which declaring her "sophisticated wordplay and gloriously messy emotions the kind of moody Midwestern rock that sounds best around 2AM." Recorded in front of a live audience at Pinwheel Records in Chicago, Lydia performs acoustically and discusses her newest release Boy Crazy & Single(s) -- a collection of previous non-album tracks and covers, released by Bloodshot Records -- as well as early record store memories, being the subject of filmmaker Gorman Bechard's recent documentary "Who Is Lydia Loveless?," and how her recent acoustic tour has allowed her more time to write not only songs, but journal entries as well. Episode 26 of See Hear is available for your earholes. It’s the final of our 2015 listener requests. The fact that it’s 2016 shows we’re a bit disorganised, but as Bernie suggested, that’s fitting with the subject matter. Eric Reanimator requested we watch and discuss Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements, directed by Gorman Bechard and released in 2011. It’s a documentary about the beloved 80s punk / pop band from Minneapolis. It uses the common documentary trope of the “talking head”perspective, but unlike many other documentaries (music or otherwise) this is all it does. There is no Replacements archival footage, nor any interviews with the band. There are producers, peers and fans all giving their stories of gigs witnessed, tutus, trashcans, favourite albums, and teen angst. Bernard, Tim and Maurice discuss whether this approach to the subject matter actually helps or hinders in appreciating who the Replacements were. There is a lot of digression from talk of the actual film to discussing what we believe the role of a documentary actually is, and what our favourite Replacements albums are. There will be a certain irony about our discussion which will become apparent as we go into the episode – listen and work it out. Gorman is the author of the novels: The Second Greatest Story Ever Told, Unwound, Ninth Square, Good Neighbors, and Balls. Gorman directed/wrote the indie feature You Are Alone, as well as The Kiss, and the horror comedy Psychos In Love. Gorman also directed the award-winning short films Objects In The Mirror Are Further Than They Appear and The Pretty Girl. Gorman made the feature comedy Friends (With Benefits) and more recently his first documentary, Color Me Obsessed, the potentially true story of the band The Replacements, told purely from fan’s stories rather than using actual music or archival footage.
