A big time change coming to U.S. soccer could mean Louisville's best opportunity for a new top-tier sports team. And we chat about it on the Access Louisville podcast. As LBF reported on Thursday, The United Soccer League is planning to launch a division one professional soccer league which will directly compete with Major League Soccer at the top of the U.S. soccer pyramid. LouCity FC currently plays at the second tier of the pyramid in the USL Championship league. While nothing has been officially announced, there are strong hints that Louisville would move up to the top once the new league is launched.As we talk about on the show, USL President Paul McDonough mentioned Louisville soccer specifically in two separate press interviews — one with the Athletic and one with the Guardian. We talk about why this could be an exciting development — though not without it's growing pains. As an entrepreneur, business owner, professor, and active community member, his story is one of survival, determination, & service. In other words, MOXIE! You see, Tran's family immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam in March 1995. They came with very little, so he had to work hard. He did not know how to speak English when he arrived in 1995. His personal goals have been and are to champion small business ownership and success by working to remove the obstacles that keep people from achieving the “American Dream”, which he was able to do despite all these challenges. True to his commitment, he became a U.S. Citizen in 2000 and went on to earn a 2006 B.S. and 2009 M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Louisville, as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy from Sullivan University in 2017. All the while, Di has founded 10 businesses all of which are still in operation. In addition to 18 years of experience as a computer programmer/engineer at a Fortune 50 company and serves as a faculty member at Sullivan University teaching Info. technology. Di says many people helped him along the way, and he believes it is important to pay it forward. So, true to his word, he has found ways to help others achieve their full potential. In addition to teaching at Sullivan, he founded the Louisville Beauty Academy in 2016, which to date has graduated & helped over 250 people obtain good-paying jobs without ANY government support, an accomplishment for which he was named a 2019 Kentucky Colonel. He now owns multiple nail salons and is the owner & proprietor of the Louisville Beauty Academy (LBA). Through these businesses, Di has sponsored people from across the world to come to Louisville, find employment, & earn American citizenship. He also serves as a part-time computer science professor at Sullivan University. In 2018, Tran launched a technical college called the Louisville Institute of Technology & is a 2020 Mosaic Honoree. Through the years, Tran has also mentored 20  individuals to open their own businesses & he continues to teach & mentor many more. Tran currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Louisville Independent Business Association (LIBA) & the South Louisville LIBA Committee, is a Board member of BOTH the KY. Assoc. of Career Colleges – known as KACCS & the Vietnamese Comm. of Louisville, as well as Tri An-a $1.5Mil Vietnam War Monument Project. He is an active member of Greater Louisville Inc. and is on LHOME's Community Advisory Committee representing the South End. Di, and his lovely wife Vy, have 3 boys, and all reside in Louisville.

Lara MacGregor is the founder of Hope Scarves, an organization she created to turn heartbreak into hope after her breast cancer diagnosis at 30 years old and 7 months pregnant. Under her leadership, ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarves’ has sent over 14,000 Hope Scarves around the globe and invested over $500,000 in Metastatic Breast Cancer Research. Lara has received many awards for her work, including being named to ‘The 100’ most influential people fighting cancer from Mass General Hospital, Small Business of the Year People’s Choice Award for Greater Louisville Inc., 40 Under 40, Citizen Laureate by Younger Women’s Club and Louisville Charity of the Year. She was Louisville’s Most Admired Woman of 2018 and featured in many national publications, including Good Housekeeping and Cure Magazine. Thousands of Kentuckians have expunged their records since a 2016 law made some low-level offenses eligible to be cleared. Greater Louisville Inc. has endorsed expungement as a way to boost Kentucky's workforce development and economy, but the process is still unaffordable and difficult for some to complete. WFPL's In Conversation talked about record expungement, who is eligible for it and what resources are available for those who qualify. Ferdinand Risco is a native of Philadelphia earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of New Haven, in Connecticut. Ferdinand was also a Distinguished Military Graduate commissioned as a Regular Army Infantry Officer & spent 10 years in the U.S. Army. Today, Ferdinand serves as the Executive Director for (TARC), the largest public transit agency in the Commonwealth of Kentucky carrying 15 million annual passengers and is responsible for the leadership and direction for all operations in the system. Ferdinand’s experience includes freight transport, manufacturing, warehousing & transportation. He has also worked in operations, maintenance, employee and labor relations, human resources, diversity & inclusion. As a former Army officer, Ferdinand has helped government agencies and later fortune 500 companies earn awards & distinctions for their best in class results.  As a transit executive and former college professor, Ferdinand is highly sought after as a lecturer on many topics including diversity, inclusion, & equal employment practices, supplier diversity, disadvantaged business enterprise certification, leadership & workforce development. Ferdinand’s community involvement even led to a 2009 appointment. by New Haven, Connecticut Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. to their Board of Education, and then a 2011 appointment to the Connecticut State Board of Education by Governor Dannel P. Malloy and service on the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Boards of Education. Ferdinand is a graduate of Leadership-APTA and was Chairman of the association’s Workforce Development Committee. Ferdinand is also an ENO Center for Transportation’s Transit Executive Seminar graduate. Now in Louisville, Ferdinand continues his service to the community, serving on the Boards of The National Safe Place Network, The Healing Place and as Secretary for The Louisville Urban League, as well as Greater Louisville Inc. – Louisville’s  Metro Chamber of Commerce, Kentuckians for Better Public Transportation & The Louisville Tourism Committee. Ferdinand is married to his beautiful wife Stacy & they have 4 children.

There's a lot of excitement around Louisville's startup scene — but also a lot of questions.That was punctuated this week after we began digging into the quiet merger of the Louisville Entrepreneur Acceleration Partnership, called LEAP, and EnterpriseCorp, the entrepreneurial arm of Greater Louisville Inc. On this week's Access Louisville podcast we spoke to reporter Haley Cawthon about the unusual sourcing of a story about this merger. And we chat about her impressions of the startup scene in Louisville.

Soccer is big in Louisville. College basketball is huge. So why don't we have a major league team here? That's what we talked about this week on In Conversation, with these guests: Dan Issel, president of NBA2LOU, the business group trying to land an NBA team Kent Oyler, president of Greater Louisville Inc., the Louisville-area chamber of commerce Dr. Patrick Rishe, Founding Director of the Sports Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis The NBA's official position is that expansion isn't on the table. But Dan Issel, president of NBA 2 Louisville, has some doubts. "In talking to some current and former administrators in the NBA front office, their feeling is that expansion is inevitable," Issel said. "Because the owners are always looking for ways to make more money." He said revenue from things like ticket sales and TV contracts has to be split 50/50 between owners and players' associations. But expansion fees go directly into the owners' pockets. "So the feeling is, it's inevitable," Issel said. "Do we know the timeline? No." Kent Oyler from GLI says having an NBA team could attract talent to the city, and increase Louisville's national visibility. "We that live here know our city. We love our city. It's a great place, lots to do, lots of cultural attractions," he said. "But if you get out of the city, and you're trying to talk to somebody that's in Chicago, or Austin, or Denver, they've heard of Louisville, but they really don't know Louisville. We're just not on the radar screen out of town." He said it's important to attract new folks because Louisville's population numbers are flat, and there are around 27,000 open jobs. "And if we want to get more people moving here, they have to start thinking of us." In Conversation airs live on 89.3 WFPL, Friday mornings at 11. Networking Tips and Tricks: Ann Marie discusses her path from Bellarmine University to the Archdiocese of Louisville and then to the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL). Not surprisingly, she found her job in YPAL because of her network. In fact, she has never just applied for a job, she has always found a job because of her connections. "It's not about what you know, it's who you know." She discusses how to conquer the fear of going to a networking event and how it's helpful to bring a friend if you don't want to go. Her favorite tricks on how to get out of an uncomfortable situation by expanding the group. Why you should go to networking events even if you're not looking for business connections. Ann Marie knows married couples who met at networking events and there is always the long-term potential benefit when you meet new people. In YPAL specifically, most of the greatest benefits will occur in 5-10 years after you first make the connection. Most YPAL attendees are between the ages of 25-35. The importance of attending networking events if you have just moved to a new city. The biggest mistake Ann Marie has seen at a networking event and the importance of making a real connection. Don't just hand out your business cards and walk away! Remember, networking events are to meet new people and make connections, not to sell yourself. Also, make sure you always follow up if somebody gives you their business card. It's amazing how few people actually follow up (check out How to Network Like a Boss). Ann Marie's craziest networking story involves Jordan Clemons (sorry Mayan Cafe). Don't know how to break the ice? Skip "What do you do?" and ask "Why are you here?" or "What are your hobbies?" Remember, don't just go in to sell, focus on making a real connection. Paul's go to is "What's your dream job?" Attend the event with the goal of trying to benefit two or more people. Have a mutual connection that might help another person? Make the introduction. Thinking of starting a business? The most important asset you can have is a strong network. If you must go with somebody else, make sure you split up and don't talk to each other the entire time. Be in it to help someone else. Don't just go to sell yourself. Always follow up. Matt Jamie’s motto of “Slow. Small. Simple.” guides his company in producing high quality, bourbon-based sauces. Louisville-native Jamie established Bourbon Barrel Foods in 2006. Made in re-purposed bourbon barrels, Jamie uses Kentucky grown non-GMO soybeans, soft red winter wheat, and limestone-filtered Kentucky water to produce his soy sauce. Cynthia Knapek has a tremendous amount of civic pride in her hometown of Louisville and loves doing work that will impact and improve her community. Knapek is executive director of Brightside, an innovative public-private partnership that works to build civic pride in the community and keep Louisville clean and green. In 2004, Knapek led the community-wide public art project “Gallopalooza” raising over $800 thousand for Brightside and other causes. Previously, Knapek was the director of education for Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates and she was a founding member and the first president of the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL). In 2001 Business First named her to the Top 40 Leaders Under 40. Knapek is active in several community organizations and serves on the boards of Greater Louisville Inc., Metro Parks Foundation, and the advisory board for the Young Professionals Association of Louisville. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Louisville.
