Caroline E. King is the founder of Vocal Assets which is a speaking company based in Somerset, UK, focusing on you being able to show up as your best you and being able to communicate that with style, resonance and gravitas. In this episode we talk about how to use the natural sound of your voice, but to enhance it in a way which makes it pleasant to listen to and which carries its message perhaps more powerfully. Caroline sang with The London Philharmonic Choir which gave her the opportunity to sing in some of the best concert halls in the world like The Festival Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London. One of her fondest memories was recording Mahler's Eighth Symphony under the baton of Klaus Tennstedt which received the Grammy Award for The Best Choral Performance in the 30th Grammy Awards in 1988. Caroline was the Principal of 6 Stagecoach Performing Arts Schools for 14 years, turning over £500,000 per annum. Many students have gone on into the profession like Katie Norris who is an up and coming comedian and has supported the likes of Hal Cruttenden on his recent tour. About Vocal Assets Caroline focuses on helping you rediscover your voice so that it resonates deeply with everyone you meet and has them hanging on wanting to hear more. She guides you in how to use the full range of your “leadership instrument”, your resonant natural voice, without stress, so that you are consistently heard and valued more highly. Transferring that voice to the “stage” (offline and online) is more tricky without sounding shouty, hard-edged or strained. She helps you to connect and command presence and impact by speaking from a more natural, authentic and powerful vocal resonance that doesn't need to be ‘switched on' or projected with overpowering force. Hal Cruttenden is in the process of splitting up with his wife of 22 years. Rather than feeling sorry for himself, he has instead joined Clive on stage to try and persuade the Edinburgh audience to split up with their partners too - every cloud!Elsewhere, Hal continues to cause controversy by i) claiming that America is better than the UK and ii) trying to justify why politicians are a wonder of the world. This episode was recorded live at the Edinburgh Fringe, August 2022.**If you enjoyed listening to this podcast, please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen. Author and political cartoonist, Chris Riddell, discusses his gothic novel for eight year olds, Goth Girl: And The Ghost Of A Mouse, which has won the children's category for the Costa Book Awards. Chris Riddell talks about the overlap between the world of Westminster and children's books, and his love of puns and literary references - including the ghost of a mouse who says "call me Ishmael". Following the publication of Justin Bieber's surprisingly cheerful police mug-shot, Daily Mail columnist Viv Groskop joins Kirsty to assess the art of the celebrity mug-shot. Theatre director, Max Stafford-Clark, former Artistic Director of The Royal Court, talks about his new book, Journal Of The Plague Year. Described as a 'howl of rage' against the drastic funding cuts to his renowned theatre company, Out Of Joint, the book details Max's correspondence with the Arts Council, and he makes his case to Kirsty for public funding of the arts. Producer: Rebecca Nicholson.

In this month's show, Mitch Benn rocks the room with two pieces of satirical musical brilliance which contain more coherent and persuasive political arguments than we've heard from Her Majesty's Opposition since about 1945; Jessica Fostekew deflates Bilderberg conspiracy theories with the most elegant of rapier thrusts, Dan Smith gives profound and gripping summaries of the situation in Syria and Turkey; Hal Cruttenden offers a powerfully unconventional critique of 1984 and Liam Mullone reveals why he will always have a soft spot for Mexican transsexual prostitutes. Alistair Barrie argues entertainingly against gay marriage and Nick Revell reflects on the lighter side of mass shootings and constitutional abuse in the United States. All consummately held together by suave sophisticated and debonair former cannabis supplier Mr James O'Brien.
James O'Brien is joined by stand-up Hal Cruttenden, musical comic Paul Thorne, New Statesman journalist Helen Lewis, and Burma's best known political comedian Zarganar, who was imprisoned in 2008 after criticising the ruling junta's response to cyclone Nargis. Following international protest at his treatment, he was freed in late 2011. Plus contributions from Nick Revell and Alistair Barrie.
Paul is that rare thing - a comic who can make the political personal and vice versa. He lets us into his well-ordered but intriguing view of comedy and the world, from the comfort of his Mazda...
