For this episode, number 68 I spoke with an animator at ILM, namely Hal Hickel. Now, if you're on twitter you'll know that Hal is a prolific tweeter. I've had a number of conversations with him online. Recently in one conversation it transpired that Hal had done some of the work on the 2004 version of Star Wars (A new hope), particularly on the redone Jabba scene. A redo of the 1997 special edition release. My friend Drew of Star Wars Visual Comparisons. So I decided to approach Hal to come on the podcast and talk about that scene as well as many of the films he's worked on over the years. Looking at my notes here for the keywords I'll add to the podcast, we talk about Toy Story, Jurassic Park, Rogue One, The Life Aquatic and many more inbetween.Filmumentaries Merch!Support the Podcast on Patreon

One of the best things about THU is having so many world-class experts in one place — something Chris took advantage of when he assembled this panel for a discussion on digital humans. The superstar lineup consisted of digital Rembrandt Ian Spriggs, CG pioneer Paul Debevec, ILM’s chief re-animator Hal Hickel, acclaimed anatomy artist Scott Eaton, and Naughty Dog lead character artist Frank Tzeng. This debate tracks the evolution of digital characters through movies such as Spider-Man 2, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Wall-E, and The Incredibles. Chris and his guests tackle the challenges of building realistic digital humans, the shortcuts games take to present convincing characters on limited hardware, and how subtle artistic decisions can help inject personality and story. They also talk about the ethical conundrums of creating virtual people, and how the film stars of tomorrow might be AI-driven algorithms.
Recorded at THU, this week’s podcast guest is ILM Animation Director Hal Hickel. Inspired by Star Wars and Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion work on King Kong, Hal became an animator on hugely successful California Raisins advertisements of the 1980s. Despite initial reservations, Hal switched clay for computers on Pixar’s breakthrough CG movie Toy Story, then moved to ILM for the Star Wars prequels, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Rango. Thanks to his wealth of experience in character animation, Hal has become an expert on digital humans. He goes into detail on how ILM created a CG Grand Moff Tarkin for Rogue One and explains why, in this case, there were no ethical issues with digitally recreating the late Peter Cushing. He also talks about the tiny tweaks his team made to make the character look as real as possible and the dangers of getting stuck in the swamp of opinions at the bottom of the uncanny valley. This podcast serves as a concise guide to how digital characters have evolved — and where they’re headed next.
Today's guest, Hal Hickel, is an Animator Supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic, working on everything from The Phantom Menace (Boss Nass and the Droidekas) and Attack of the Clones (the Droid Factory and Battle of Geonosis) to Rogue One, helping to pioneer the incredible effects that brought Tarkin, Leia and K-2SO to the big screen. Mr. Hickel has had a fascinating career, from Toy Story to Iron Man to his award winning work on Davy Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean. And we talk about it all, don't worry. The holy grail for many animators is to create digital humans that can pass for the real thing -- in other words to cross the "uncanny valley." The problem is that the closer they get to realism, the more those almost-real humans repulse us. Blame evolution for that. I talk with Hal Hickel from ILM who brought Peter Cushing to life on Rogue One, Marianne Hayden who worked on games like The Last of Us and Uncharted for Naughty Dog studios, Vladimir Mastilovic from 3Lateral studios who worked on Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and SVA instructor Terrence Masson about what it takes to cross that valley.Learn more about your ad choices. This episode is ILM Animation Director, Hal Hickel! Apart from being one of the most talented people in the industry, he's also a SUPER nice guy with amazing stories! We talk about him making stop motion movies growing up, learning to animated dinosaurs in a portable classroom, animating Boss Nass, WINNING AN OSCAR and how writing a letter to Lucasfilm as a kid later was signed by The Maker himself.
