On a new Wild For Change podcast, we speak with Brooks Bonner, Program Director of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. E.O. Wilson, was an American biologist, naturalist, ecologist, entomologist, and the author of many books, including Half-Earth. The premise of Half-Earth proposes that to save the planet, half of the Earth's lands and seas need to be preserved and protected. In this podcast, Brooks discusses the significance of preserving half of the Earth's lands and seas, the essential role that other species play in our lives, and why safeguarding diverse ecosystems is crucial for the survival of every form of life on our planet. Brooks will also shed light on the Half-Earth Project and Interactive Map, which acts as a guiding tool for identifying and protecting areas rich in biodiversity. Additionally, he will share some valuable insights on how we can support our local native species and contribute to protecting our planet's biodiversity. To learn more about the Half-Earth Project and view the Interactive Map, go to https://eowilsonfoundation.org/which-half/national-report-cards/half-earth-project-map/“Unless humanity learns a great deal more about global biodiversity and moves quickly to protect it, we will soon lose most of the species composing life on Earth. The Half-Earth proposal offers a first, emergency solution commensurate with the magnitude of the problem: I am convinced that only setting aside half the planet in reserve, or more, can we save the living part of the environment and achieve the stabilization required for our own survival.” E.O. Wilson “Every species on Earth depends on other species for its survival. But we continue to yank at these threads of incredible ecosystems, unraveling our own support systems.” Brooks Bonner Website: http://www.wildforchange.com Twitter: @WildForChange Facebook: /wildforchange Instagram: wildforchange
On a new Wild For Change podcast, we welcome back Damien Mander, environmentalist and founder of Akashinga, the first all-women, anti-poaching organization formerly known as the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. We also welcome Nyaradzo Hoto, a Biodiversity Officer of Akashinga who focuses on research and data analysis collected by the Akashinga rangers. The Akashinga rangers are not only working to protect precious wildlife from poachers, but they are also supporting countless other animal lives through their completely plant-based diet. We'll discuss the uniqueness of Akashinga's plant-based diet and how this also parallels helping to save the Earth as American biologist E.O. Wilson proposed in his book, Half-Earth. Damien and Nyaradzo will share with us how eating a plant-based diet supports our health, the countless lives of animals that are not only part of animal agriculture but the wildlife and the health and stability of our home planet Earth. Damien has been featured in the documentary Game Changers abouteating a plant-based diet and TedX, BBC, and National Geographic. Both Damien and Nyaradzo are two exemplary individuals who embody the spirit of a game-changer.I wanted to include in the show notes three quotes from the podcast that provide insight into how our collective actions affect the planet and all life on Earth:“I already know I'm not responsible for the death of animals. I'm not carrying that weight on my shoulders, on my conscience and that is a powerful thing to be rid of.” Damien Mander on eating a plant-based diet.“For us as humans, we are in a unique position. For the first time in history we are the only species that has the power to determine what level of suffering is acceptable for all other species on the planet. But in having that power as well, we've been trying to play God in a negative way. We've been trying to control everything without realizing what we're doing to our own species. If we really don't start to respect the planet, or treating it like a bloody garbage dump, it's gonna chew us up and spit us out.” Damien Mander“We don't need much space to grow vegetables. As we grow vegetables, we are also supporting the climate exchange. Like taking exchange for fighting for the climate change, because the more we grow plants in the environment, the more we are fighting on the climate change.” Nyaradzo Hoto, on how eating plant-based supports the planetWebsite: http://www.wildforchange.com Twitter: @WildForChange Facebook: /wildforchange Instagram: wildforchange
To honor primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall's 90th birthday (April 3 2024) and her continuing conservation work, I am playing part of a recent Mongabay News interview with her, hosted by Rhett A. Butler, followed by a PBS News Hour interview from 2016 with the late biologist E.O. Wilson where he discussed his final book "Half Earth" which he wrote in his late eighties. He continued working until he passed at age 92 in 2021 and his legacy lives on with his many nature books and his Half Earth Project nonprofit that seeks to protect half of our planet's most biodiverse land and sea spaces to ensure wildlife has access and can thrive there without humans exploiting them or taking over the space -- this protection Wilson explains is necessary to end the mass extinction crisis (other animals cannot thrive living in fragmented isolated parks here and there). I think you'll enjoy hearing from these legends with their hopeful messages and solutions on this 31-minute podcast. In the 2016 book, Half Earth, Edward O. Watson makes a compelling case for us humans – for the sake of our own survival if nothing else – to agree to protect what remains of the intact systems that hold the planet in a steady state, on both land and sea, with critical goals for 2030. Half of the planet protected by 2050, reserved for natural systems and the biodiversity and processes that basically support the rest of the world.
Green capitalism will do nothing to reverse climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, says environmental historian Troy Vettese. In "Half-Earth Socialism" he and Drew Pendergrass lay out a radical plan to save our future: a vision for eco-socialism that ends the ecological crisis and brings the good life to all.
Kathryn Spence has spent years compiling, sorting and transforming culture's discards into sculptural objects that reveal a human determination on the topic of sufficiency. Fascinated with space, materiality, and objectness, she attends to materials conventionally wasted to produce installations and individual objects that act as a point of unhinging between the natural world and the controlled world. The show being discussed is Kathryn Spence at P. Bibeau, September 9 - October 22, 2022. Kathryn Spence (b. 1963) resides in the Bay Area and is featured in numerous public collections including SFMOMA, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., U.C. Cymene and Dominic talk about hauling ice, champagne socialism and the mystery of Viennetta cakes on this week's intro. Then (16:07) we are joined by Troy Vettese, an environmental historian, and Drew Pendergrass, an environmental engineer, to talk about their bold and imaginative new book, Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics (Verso 2022, https://www.versobooks.com/books/3818-hal). We begin with the value of thinking in impractical ways and how utopian socialists past like Edward Bellamy, William Morris and Otto Neurath inspired this project. We discuss how high growth expectations have bedeviled planning in the past and talk about the flaws in the utopia of automated luxury socialism. Is capitalism an inherently irrational system? Does planning have irrational tendencies too? We cover where the idea to make a game version of the book came from (https://play.half.earth). We move from there to what the Left could stand to learn from the tactics of the neoliberal revolution, the necessity of utopian imagination for mass organizing, how intellectuals underestimate the readiness of the working class for change and much, much, more. Also please check out Drew and Troy's Noema essay based on the book at: https://www.noemamag.com/planning-an-eco-socialist-utopia/
Eric Smith has spent his career working at the intersection of economics and nature. Most recently he was the director of the venture capital vehicle Neglected Climate Opportunities (NCO) at the Grantham Environmental Trust, where he co-led over 40 direct investments in start-ups across all stages that can remove carbon and GHG at scale. He was previously with SJF Ventures and worked for BlackRock on climate finance, and currently is Founder/CEO of Edacious, a company working to differentiate food quality and connect the dots between soil and human health. On this episode of “Death in The Garden,” we share our interview with Frédéric Leroy, professor of food science and biotechnology at the University of Brussels, President of the Belgian Association of Meat Science and Technology, President of Belgian Society for Food Microbiology, Administrator of ALEPH2020, and member of the Belgian Nutrition Society and Global Food Justice Alliance. We discuss the intersections between the campaigns to demonize meat-eating, the corporatization of the food system, the proliferation of chronic disease, biased nutritional science, global deficiencies and malnutrition, and animal-rights groups. We also touch on the biological indicators which prove meat-eating is natural, and we talk about how animal have been systematically obscured from perception and cordoned to industrial methods, and how that separation has been integral to animal rights abuses. We discuss the connection between The Great Reset, the World Economic Forum, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the UN, and the transformation to factory produced foods, as well as the expansion of “protected areas” under plans like 30x30 or “Half-Earth.” We talk about what models of scientific analysis should be implemented in the future to understand the complexity of human nutrition science with more rigor, as well as the need for certain regulations to end animal cruelty and regenerate land. Check out the ALEPH2020 website for more information, and refer to this image when we start discussing “pre-domestic, domestic, and post domestic” livestock relationships. “Animal agriculture can be gone tomorrow. it's not foundational. That's why I find it very puzzling, the amount of pushback because it seems to be the actual… low hanging fruit. You write a book about socialism and no problem at all, people are like. “yeah, sure get rid of capitalism. No problem.” Get rid of animal agriculture, they get very mad.” -Drew Pendergrass Drew is a PhD student in environmental engineering at Harvard. He is also the co-author with Troy Vettessee of Half Earth Socialism A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics. In order to save the planet while at the same time, make life better for all beings on the planet, Drew and Troy have come up with a plan, that includes: Rewilding half the earth to absorb carbon emissions and restore biodiversity A rapid transition to renewable energy, paired with drastic cuts in consumption by the world's wealthiest Global veganism to cut down on energy and land use Worldwide socialist planning to efficiently and equitably manage production The involvement of everyone The authors also collaborated with designers from the Jain Family Institute and Trust to create a video game based on the book, at play.half.earth. We discuss the works of Otto Neurath, Leonid Kantorovich and Stafford Beer; using neoliberal thinking against neoliberalism, how and why Malthusian ideas on over-population are embedded into society and the problems that arise from it, and how to create more efficient food chains through global veganism.LinksPick up a copy of half earth socialism from Verso books Here Check out Drew and Troy's website for more info: https://www.half.earth/Play the Half Earth Socialism the gamehttps://play.half.earth/Shout outsUAWD - United All Workers for Democracy @UAWD_ReformTroy's girlfriend Shenuya Minesh Parekh - congrats on being elected for Crookes and Crosspool in Sheffield@min_eshFianna Hornby GND Councillor elected for Gorse Hill in Trafford@fiannahornbyAngela Brown GND Councillor elected in Heywood@Angel4brown598Support the show
Emma hosts Drew Pendergrass, doctoral student in Environmental Engineering at Harvard University, and Troy Vettese, environmental historian at the European University Institute, to discuss their recent book Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future From Extinction, Climate Change, and Pandemics, on putting together a socialist model for a society that operates without economic markets and with respect for ecological theory, climate science, and urban and land-use planning. Drew and Troy begin by situating their work as an attempt to think through what socialism does, and can mean when attempting to tackle modern questions and social issues, with a particular focus on conservation. They then dive into the specific systems and infrastructures that would be necessary in such a society, from mass investment in public transportation, greater food choice to support a transition away from industrial husbandry, and a commitment to re-wilding and building up nature preserves from around 10-15% of land to around 50%, before looking at why socialism is necessary as the overarching system supporting this world. Next, Emma, Drew, and Troy look deeper at the history of conservation and the ideologies that drive it, first looking at their work as a critique building off of E.O. Wilson and completely changing our relationship to land-use as we try to undo our creation of a sixth mass extinction, before they jump back to the 1700s and the major schools of thought around our relationship to nature – including the influence of Hegel and the humanization of nature into utopia, and the Malthusian social Darwinism that sees “positive” checks (mass deaths) on population numbers as central to humanity's continued existence. They also touch on how the role of conservationism, particularly today, almost entirely serves the realm of philanthropy, as they dive into prevailing narratives and models around tackling the climate crisis we face, and how they often act contrary to the ecological crisis, looking at nuclear power and carbon capture technology specifically, before wrapping up by discussing their own perspectives on the issue, and the video game attached to their work that lets people practice building their own environmental models for the future, and see what worlds they could support. Emma also covers a Florida judge's overturning of the federal mask mandate on public transit and planes, Israel's continued air raids on Gaza at the height of Ramadan, and Ron DeSantis banning textbooks for discussing social-emotional learning. And in the Fun Half: Emma takes a call with Ken from Charleston as they unpack today's interview, before watching Eric Bolling take Ilhan Omar's suggestion of praying on an airplane as disrespect towards good Christians, and Fox's the Five dive behind who's really in charge of Biden, refusing to walk on eggshells as they daringly analyze the Easter Bunny's role at this weekend's White House Celebrations. Both E.O. Wilson and Tom Lovejoy were major figures in the conservation field and passed away in late 2021 -- both also appeared on this show, so we play some clips of those conversations and talk with two guests about their legacies, but also where to look for new conservation leadership. Do we need new figures like them, or is this conservation's post-icon era? What about the great diversity of new scientists coming up via programs like STEM, and whole communities like Indigenous ones who have their own scientists, plus rich traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)? We discuss this with two guests: Rebecca McCaffery, who is Society of Conservation Biology's president for North America, and Mongabay staff writer Liz Kimbrough, who interviewed E.O. Wilson just 2 months before his passing. Both of these women hold conservation science PhDs and share expansive views on what's next for leadership in the field. Paula Ehrlich, President & CEO at E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, explains the science behind the project to save earth's critical habitats.
The Half-Earth Project was co-founded by E.O.Wilson, one of America’s most pre-eminent biologist, whose purpose is to save half of the oceans and land for the preservation of most of the biodiversity on Earth. In his book, The Creation (2006), E.O. Wilson states: “The human hammer having fallen, the sixth mass extinction has begun.” Dr. […] The post A Discussion on the “Insect Apocalypse” with Half-Earth Project naturalist, Dr. Piotr Naskrecki appeared first on KKFI.
My guest on this episode of Digging in the Dirt is President & CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and Co-founder of the Half-Earth Project, Paula J. Ehrlich. The Half-Earth Project's purpose is to inspire informed collective action to save the biosphere.
Troy Vettese joins us on the podcast this week for an insightful, and sometimes provocative, conversation about the intersections of animal rights and Marxism. Troy shares why he believes all vegans need a Marxist worldview, and you may be surprised […]
Part II of our conversation with Dr. E.O. Wilson explores his concept of Half-Earth, a call to protect half the Earth's land and sea in order to manage sufficient habitat to reverse the species extinction crisis and ensure species have the space they need to thrive. Hear how the Half-Earth Project is bringing this vision to life. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lovenature/message
In this episode of Sacred Tension, environmental scientist Melissa Wilson returns to the show to tell us a harrowing story of abuse at a small Christian college in Appalachia. Instead of assuming this incident is an anomaly, or a tempest in a teacup, it is best to see it as a microcosm of the abuse and crisis sweeping all of evangelical Christian culture. Melissa B. Wilson, A.L.M and M.S. is an active conservationist and environmentalist who happily lives in paradise (the U.S. Virgin Islands) working to create STEM career pathways and networks for Caribbean students. As a former evangelical, a current climate activist, gay ally, and descendant of the Bohemian Reformation (the first Protestant Reformation) she speaks about faith, life, ecology, and our current political climate on her blog www.ecotheologist.com. She graduated from Harvard University in May 2019 with a Masters of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies-Sustainability and won the Harvard Dean’s Top Prize for Best Thesis in Sustainability. Her conservation research about wilderness, reaching Half-Earth, and STEM education can be found at www.melissawilson.net. Love my work and want to support it? The population of humans has almost tripled since 1950, and the impact on other species has been profound. Humans have absorbed vast amounts of habitat for living space and farmland, leading to the extinction of hundreds of species and threats to countless others. Ron Maxwell and Skipper Darlington join Bill Walton to talk about a radical but oddly simple and doable solution.
In recent years, calls to preserve greater swaths of the Earth's land- and seascapes have grown. In particular, numerous conservationists have called for the protection of half of the planet's surface, a bold initiative that would preserve much of the world's existing biodiversity and ecosystem function. However, the path to such a "half-Earth" preservation model lies largely in uncharted territory, with many potential pitfalls along the way. Writing in BioScience, Dr. Thomas Campagnaro of the University of Padova, in Italy, and his colleagues elucidate one possible route to better landscape preservation. In their article, the authors describe Natura 2000, the world's largest conservation network. Based in the European Union, the network relies on strong governance, flexible designations, and scientific expertise to produce reliable conservation outcomes. In this episode of BioScience Talks, Dr. Campagnaro is joined by coauthors Tommaso Sitzia, also of the University of Padova, and Erle Ellis, of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, to discuss the network and the prospects for scaling it up to a planetary scale. On this episode we share a progress report on the Half-Earth Project (an ambitious effort to set aside half the world for nature) direct from legendary conservation biologist E.O. Wilson. In this return visit to the podcast, Dr. Wilson discusses their effort to map the world's 6,000 bee species, his enthusiasm for the new science of understanding ecosystems, and interesting ties with the business community. Host Mike Gaworeck met Dr. Wilson at Half-Earth Project's recent event at the American Museum of Natural History which featured the launch of a new educational initiative and live discussion between Wilson, musician Paul Simon (listen to Paul Simon discuss why he supports the Half-Earth Project on a March 2017 episode of the Mongabay Newscast), and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. Learn about the visionary Half-Earth Project! Conceived by world-renowned biologist and Pulitzer prize winning author, E.O. Wilson, the Half-Earth Project is headed up by Dr. Paula Ehrlich, President & CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. This remarkable project proposes the goal of conserving half the Earth in order to protect 85% or more of species, including human beings. E.O. On this episode of the Mongabay Newscast, we’re thrilled to feature a conversation with the one and only Paul Simon, who's just announced a tour in support of the environment. The 12-time Grammy-winning musician recently announced on Mongabay.com that he is embarking on a 17-date US concert tour, with all proceeds benefitting Half-Earth, an initiative of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. We play parts of the interview with Paul Simon as he discusses his long-time friendship with E.O. Wilson, the power of optimism, and why Dr. Wilson’s Half-Earth idea inspired him to get involved. Also on the program, we round up the top conservation news and feature another Field Notes segment, this time with Zuzana Burivalova, a conservation scientist at Princeton University who has recorded the soundscapes of over 100 sites in the Indonesian part of Borneo. We listen to a variety of those recordings, each made in a different type of habitat, from protected rainforest to an oil palm plantation, and Burivalova explains what we’re hearing — and in some cases, what we’re not hearing. On this episode, we feature excerpts from a conversation with author and biologist E.O. Wilson, one of the greatest scientists of the last 100 years, who was recently interviewed by Mongabay senior correspondent Jeremy Hance about the Half Earth biodiversity initiative, the Trump Administration, and how he maintains hope for the future. We also welcome back Mongabay founder and CEO Rhett Butler, who answers a listener question about the natural sounds heard in the background at the start of every episode of the Newscast (the image that illustrates this episode is from the spot where that recording was produced, in Indonesia).
The world has lost so much wildlife some conservationists think half the earth should be set aside for nature to ensure the world can continue to provide all the services we need such as clean water, unpolluted air and soils, healthy food and so on. But one recent study shows that 50% of wildlife has disappeared in the last 40 years. As human population grows and pressure on resources increases many feel there needs to be a bold plan to ensure we can share the planet with other forms of life so that they and us can continue. One proposition is called Half Earth - make half of the earth just for nature. The vision is for a meandering network of nature corridors that open out into huge parks set aside for wildlife. In a special programme from the Natural History Museum in London Monty Don and a panel of experts in subjects ranging from conservation science to urban planning and economics discuss whether this could work?
