Dr. William Turner and Dr. Ted Olson talk to Geonoah Davis and Kelly Thompson, two artists whose hip-hop sounds are expanding traditional ideas about music in Appalachia. Borrowing from a generations-old African American heritage of spoken word expression, rap and hip-hop echo a long narrative tradition of African American cultural survival against all odds. These original historical elements are deeply rooted in the fabric of Appalachia, blending into the backdrop of the region's musical character yet revived and brought forward again by these fresh creative talents with their contemporary styles.Geonoah Davis, known by the artistic name geonovah, was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, VA, in the heart of Appalachia's coal and iron industry. He wasn't the first rapper in his family, and early collaborations with his cousin RKMITCH allowed him to develop his powers of poetry into an artistry for hip-hop lyric and verse. Kelly Thompson, a.k.a Pookie, also hails from Big Stone Gap but spent his early childhood in North Carolina. Friends since middle school, he and Geonoah have made music together for many years—Kelly creating beats and Geonoah writing lyrics. Kelly evolved his talents to include music production, learning from local producers in his area.Dr. William Turner is a long-time African American studies scholar and retired Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador from Berea College. He was also a research assistant to Roots author Alex Haley and co-editor of the groundbreaking Blacks in Appalachia. In 2021, Turner received Western Carolina University's individual Mountain Heritage Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Southern Appalachian studies. His memoir called The Harlan Renaissance, available from West Virginia University Press, was awarded the prestigious Weatherford Award at the 2022 Appalachian Studies Association Conference.Dr. Ted Olson is a music historian and professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He is the author of many books, articles, reviews, encyclopedia entries, and oral histories. Olson has produced and compiled a number of documentary albums of traditional Appalachian music including On Top of Old Smoky and Big Bend Killing, both from Smokies Life. His work has received a number of awards, including nine Grammy nominations. The East Tennessee Historical Society honored Olson with its Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.Music featured includes:1. “John Henry” performed by Amythyst Kiah and Roy Andrade from GSMA's (now Smokies Life's) album Big Bend Killing2. “Takin' Me Over” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings3. “S&S” performed by geonovah for the album No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia, used courtesy of June Appal Recordings4. “Black Lives Never Mattered” by RKMITCH featuring geonovah, vocals mixed by Pookie

On last week's show, Eric told us about the 15-foot tall Sasquatch he saw, while bow hunting, in Northern Indiana. Well, last week, he went back to the woods where he had that sighting, but he wasn't alone this time. He took his younger brother with him. Guess what happened. That's right. His brother is an eyewitness too now, which is good, because that means Eric is no longer the only person in his family who's seen a Sasquatch. Now, his younger brother can vouch for the fact they exist. Hopefully, his mother won't rib him so much now.Tonight's 2nd guest, had both of his Bigfoot sightings in Florida, while driving in his truck. When he had his 1st encounter, in 2002, he was leaving work, early 1 morning, after working a double shift, and wound up seeing a gray-colored Sasquatch. He had his 2nd sighting in 2017, while driving to Lake Hatchineha, early 1 morning. He had almost made it to the lake that foggy morning, when he thought that he saw a cypress tree in the road ahead, about 3/4 of a mile down the road. As he drew closer, he could see that it wasn't a tree. It was a Sasquatch that had been standing in the road, with its back facing him.Tonight's 3rd and 4th guests had an encounter together, in Central Alabama. They've had sightings without the other person being present too, though. His 1st sighting happened when he was 5 or 6. He had been up on the roof of a playhouse/treehouse that his dad, grandfather, and grandmother had built for him. Suddenly, when he looked to his right, he saw a huge, light brown, creature standing there, watching him. His 2nd encounter happened less than 1 year ago, while driving home 1 night, with his girlfriend, Sara. Sara had a sighting of her own, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, when she was 4 or 5 years old. She was laying in bed, when all of a sudden, she got the feeling that she was being watched. When she turned and looked at her bedroom window, she realized that her instincts were spot-on! She WAS being watched, and from close range! If you've had a Bigfoot sighting and would like to be a guest, on the show, please go to https://MyBigfootSighting.com and let us know. This episode is all about books! And it's the last episode of the year. My next episode will be January 6, 2022. Happy holidays! As of December 5, I read 51 books this year. I will likely finish book #52 this week, but I probably won't hit my goal of 60 books in 2021, which is OK. I set a goal just because I have fun tracking my books along the way. In this week's episode, I rank my top 10 books of the year — all were published in 2021. I then give you two extras that I loved this year that were published in 2020. I also mention a few other 2021 books that I haven't read and that don't seem like my cup of tea but that you might want to check out. And, I mention a few 2021 books that I really want to read but haven't gotten to yet. Then I finish up by listing a few 2022 books that I'm looking forward to. Holton was elected in 1969 as the first Republican governor of the 20th Century, though he would later endorse Democratic candidates for statewide office. Holton was born in Big Stone Gap in 1923 and died at his home in Kilmarnock yesterday. (Wikipedia) While in office, Holton and his wife sent their children to public schools. Governor Ralph Northam noted that in a statement yesterday. “If you want to know what American strength looks like, look at the famous photographs of Governor Holton—smiling, as he walked his children to Richmond’s public schools during the tensest moments of desegregation,” Northam said. “He faced down Virginia’s demons and enabled this Commonwealth to look ahead.”In the most recent letter, we took a look at campaign finance for local candidates in Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Nelson County. Election day is just a few days away. Today let’s look at House of Delegates races. Albemarle County currently has four different districts within it boundaries. Let’s start with the 25th House District, which stretches from Albemarle into Augusta and Rockingham Counties. Democrat Jennifer Kitchen is challenging incumbent Republican Chris Runion. Kitchen began the October reporting period with $108,930 on hand, raised an additional $29,673, and spent $37,189. Runion began October with $77,655, raised an additional $37,837, spent $39,320 in cash, and recorded $16,314 in in-kind donated expenses. The 57th District includes all of Charlottesville and some of Albemarle. Incumbent Democrat Sally Hudson began October with $29,158 on hand, raised $24,469, spent $7,482 in cash, and recorded $2,499 in in-kind expenses. Hudson’s Republican challenger, Philip Hamilton, began the month with $2,917 in the bank. He raised $495 and spend $1,468. The 58th District consists of eastern Albemarle, all of Greene County, and parts of Fluvanna and Rockingham counties. Incumbent Republican Rob Bell began October with $354,466 in the bank and raised $89,293 in the first three weeks of the month. Bell’s campaign spent $164,137 during the period and recorded $21,435 in expenses. Bell’s challenger is Democrat Sara Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe began October with $14,035 in the bank and raised $48,668 in the period. She spent $28,618 in cash and marked $24,928 in in-kind expenses. Southern Albemarle is within the 59th District, which also includes portions of Appomattox, Buckingham, Nelson, and Campbell counties. Republican Matt Fariss is the incumbent and he began the month with $29,671 in the bank. His campaign raised $18,285 in the period and spent $38,201 in the first three weeks. Farris had $9,755 in the bank on October 21.His Democratic challenger Ben Moses began the month with $84,215 and raised an additional $102,505. Moses spent $76,789 in cash and recorded $61,231 in in-kind expenses. Moses has raised $603,138.01 during the campaign. (report)Independent Louis Scicli began October with $207, raised no money, and spent no money. Before the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, it would be commonplace for factories to discharge pollutants into rivers and streams without any consideration of the effect of the natural world. Nearly fifty years later, there is a system of permits and regulations in place to improve water quality. The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority is working with certain industries in the community to pre-treat industrial waste before effluent is released into the ecosystem. Patricia Defibaugh is the laboratory manager for the RWSA.“The purpose of this program is to protect the sewer system and wastewater treatment plants through limits on industrial waste discharges,” Defibaugh said. “This is a requirement of the [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.” This is part of the Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and an annual report is due to the DEQ by the end of every January. The goal is to remove as many fats, oils, greases as well as metals, nutrients, and acidity as possible by working with industries who create those waste products. “The ones we’re concerned with are the significant industrial user, and that’s either a categorial user which is metal finishing, or semiconductor manufacturers,” Defibaugh said. “Or non-categorical which discharge more than 25,000 gallons per day or had a potential to adversely affect our treatment processes.”The types of businesses of concern include restaurants, breweries, wineries, dentists, and dry cleaners. None of the breweries connected to urban water exceed the 25,000 gallon threshold. Gary O’Connell, executive director of the Albemarle County Service Authority, said there is a program that seeks to remove cooking oil from the wastewater process. “There’s an active [fats, oil, and grease] program that goes on,” O’Connell said. “I know in our case it’s about 260 grease traps that we inspect. On the more industrial level, the RWSA has three companies that are in the pretreatment program. These are Virginia Diodes, Mikro, and Northrup Grumman. For more information on this topic, visit Henrico County’s Industrial Pretreatment Program. PFAS concernsFifty years after the Clean Water Act, there are concerns about other pollutants that are not easily seen. In 2020, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation requiring the Virginia Department of Health to study the level of polyfluorinated substances in drinking water (PFAS). These are chemical byproducts of the processes used to make non-stick cooking utensils, fire-fighting foam, food packaging, and other uses They are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down. The health effects are being studied. (CDC fact-sheet on PFAS). The industrial pretreatment work will be used to help identify the scope of the problem. “DEQ is going to be sending out a survey to Rivanna’s significant industrial users to confirm their use and manufacture of PFAS compounds,” Defibaugh said. Yesterday, the DEQ announced that elevated levels of PFAS have been found in the Chickahominy River. They found out from a report from the Newport News Waterworks (NNWW) and now the DEQ will work with the VDH to further study the issue. “NNWW is continuing to monitor source waters in coordination with state agencies and has assured residents that the water it provides to its customers is safe to drink and has consistently shown PFAS levels well below the lifetime health advisory from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),” reads the press release. Last week, the EPA announced a national strategy will be undertaken to confront the PFAS problem. “EPA’s Roadmap is centered on three guiding strategies: Increase investments in research, leverage authorities to take action now to restrict PFAS chemicals from being released into the environment, and accelerate the cleanup of PFAS contamination,” reads a press release from that initiative. In this episode WMMT's Katie Myers travels to Big Stone Gap, Virginia for the small Appalachian town's first-ever Juneteenth celebration, taking place on June 19. Juneteenth is a historically Black holiday dating back to 1865, the year Black people in the United States were emancipated from slavery. The news didn't travel everywhere at the same rate, and Juneteenth marks the day it reached many people in the deep South. This year, the Biden administration recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday. In this piece, you'll hear speeches, music, and storytelling from Big Stone Gap community members, many of whom can recall a time when the town was segregated, about what this celebration means to them - about how far we've all come, and how far we have to go.

Next Monday (07/06/2020) my guest will be the talented designer, author, and teacher Anna Zilboorg. Anna's pronouns are she and her. Anna, an Elder of the knitting community, is an Anglican solitary who now lives on the seaside town of Rockland, Maine. According to a quote by her (that I found online), she says that she was… "Born and reared in New York City; educated at Harvard; taught at MIT. Fled from the madding crowd's ignoble strife until I found myself in Big Stone Gap, VA. Got religion. Returned to my childhood love of knitting; became a hermit." At this point, Anna is retired. Before she retired, she devoted her energy to teaching the living craft (as opposed to just following directions). She has been called the Anarchist Knitter because of her book Knitting for Anarchists, and the 'Mad Bobbler' due to her love of three-dimensional stitches. Other books include Magnificent Mittens and Socks and Splendid Apparel, both available, as well as Sock for Sandals and Clogs, Fancy Feet, and 45 Fine & Fanciful Hats to Knit. Beyond her impressive career, Anna is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. I'm so happy that she agreed to be on the show. Please tune in—you really don't want to miss Anna!

Nobody tells a story quite like the author of Big Stone Gap, Milk Glass Moon, Lucia Lucia and many others — and there are few authors who create characters so beloved as hers are. Whether she's crafting a contemporary story for young adults or a weaving a family saga that stretches back decades, Adriana Trigiani draws deeply on her Italian-American family life and small-town Appalachian roots to deliver stories of ordinary people whose quests for fulfillment in love, work, and art deepen into epics of the everyday. Trigiani sat down in our studio with Barnes & Noble's Miwa Messer just before the publication of her brand new novel Tony's Wife, to talk about her fiction, her education work in her native Appalachia, and the books that inspire her.
This is the perfect episode for anyone trying to find a shift in their career, or in their artistry, for the actors who are wanting to make brave decisions in their life and in their approach of character. She is best known for her role as Dharma in “Dharma & Greg,” the hit series that led her to earn three Emmy Awards nominations and a Golden Globe Award. Elfman is also known for her work in the ABC comedy series “Imaginary Mary,” “Growing Up Fisher,” “1600 Penn,” “Damages,” and an appearance on “Shameless.” She’s also had guest appearances in “Two and a Half Men,” Royal Pain,” “My Name is Earl,” and “The Mindy Project.” In film she’s best known for “Keeping the Faith,” which she starred in with Ben Stiller and directed by Edward Norton, “Can’t Hardly Wait,” Ron Howard’s “Edtv,” with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, and “Big Stone Gap,” with Ashley Judd and Whoopi Goldberg. Mal Vincent review of new film Big Stone Gap.
Patrick Wilson and Paul Wilson join host Robin Milling to talk about their film Big Stone Gap. It was a labor of love for the Wilson brothers who's family roots are steeped in the small Virginian town. As children they recall spending summers with their grandparents who lived in Big Stone Gap. They tell Robin it was bittersweet to return to the place of their fondest childhood memories to shoot the movie, even staying in the house where they summered. Patrick says, 'It's really been the most personal project I've ever been a part of.' Paul tells Robin the story of how the Wilson family has been immortalized in the town with 'Wilson Road,' and the 'Paul J. Wilson' bridge named for their grandfather. In fact their grandparents were friends with the parents of writer/director Adrianna Trigiani who waited until Patrick was old enough to play the part, to make the film of her book. Patrick and Paul's collaboration goes beyond movies, as they also have a band called The Wilson Van along with their brother Mark playing renditions of Van Halen songs. Big Stone Gap also stars Ashley Judd, Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Krakowski, Jenna Elfman, and John Benjamin Hickey.
Wendy Welch and her husband moved to Big Stone Gap, Virginia, bought a home, and decided to turn it into a used bookstore. They didn't have an easy time of it at first, but as they persevered, they found themselves forging deep connections with their community--and learning a lot about people's relationships with books. I talked with Wendy about some of the early hurdles they faced, and about what led her to share her story in The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap.
