One of the takeaways from this year's Educause Horizon Report is that there's likely no such thing as a return to normal: Many of the changes that higher education has undergone over the past couple of years are here to stay. At the same time, the trends, technologies and practices impacting teaching and learning have developed more depth, more nuance. For example, while hybrid learning was addressed broadly in last year's report, this year the report drilled down into important facets such as hybrid learning spaces and professional development for hybrid teaching. To delve into the details of what's on the horizon for higher ed in 2022, we spoke with Kathe Pelletier, director of Educause's Teaching and Learning Program and co-author of the report. For many years, the Horizon Report has been tracking trends, technologies and key practices in teaching and learning. But this year, there’s one striking difference: the impact of a global pandemic on practically every aspect of higher education. In some ways, colleges and universities may never be the same — but in other ways, trends that were important before COVID-19 have persisted, even as we view them through a new lens. To make sense of it all, Executive Editor Rhea Kelly speaks with Kathe Pelletier, director of EDUCAUSE’s Teaching and Learning Program and co-author of the report, about key technology trends, their impact on IT departments, new education models and more.

In this episode, we’re joined by not one but two guests: Keith Krueger of the Consortium for School Networking and Samantha Becker of New Media Consortium. They’re both here to talk about a joint project between their two organizations called the Horizon Report, an annual initiative focused on identifying the technological trends that are driving educational change, sponsored by Share Fair Nation via a grant from the Morgridge Family Foundation. During our conversation, we touch on the research process behind the report, some trends and other information called out in this year’s report, and the companion toolkit that helps K-12 leaders steer conversations around harnessing emerging technologies identified in the report.
This video is about Video the NMC/CoSN Horizon Report > 2016 K-12 Edition.
What is on the five-year horizon for K-12 schools worldwide? Which trends and technologies will drive educational change? What are the challenges that we consider as solvable or difficult to overcome, and how can we strategize effective solutions? These questions and similar inquiries regarding technology adoption and transforming teaching and learning steered the collaborative research and discussions of a body of 55 experts to produce the NMC/CoSN Horizon Report: 2016 K-12 Edition, made possible by Share Fair Nation under a grant from the Morgridge Family Foundation. This publication charts the five-year horizon for the impact of emerging technologies in school communities across the globe.
For the second year in a row I, along with a bunch of others from schools in Asia, have worked with the New Media Consortium to produce the international schools in Asia edition of the Horizon Report.Today I talk with Victoria (Vic) Estrada who managed the process as editor, writer and cat-herder-in-chief. You know how teachers are! We discuss what the report is about, how it is brought together and some of the findings that came up this year as we looked at the intersection between technology and education.Connect With Vic Twitter: @vic_estr Website: Nmc.orgBioVictoria has been immersed in the world of emerging technologies and innovative learning models with the NMC for three years. She enjoys contributing her talents as an editor, writer, and researcher for the NMC Horizon Report series and the NMC Blog. Before that, she was teaching ESL and training aspiring English teachers for the Fulbright Commission in Costa Rica and working toward social justice with literacy-focused non-profits in Austin, Texas.Pull Quote: “International schools are way ahead of others in how they use technology to improve learning.”
Jamie, Chris and I were looking much forward to this interview with Dr. Ruben Puentedura, or as we like to call him, Mr. SAMRImmediately we were impressed by how down to earth and how genuine he was. He is the type of professor you would call Ruben instead of Puentedura.I was surprised to learn that he starting developing the model way back in the 80's. I had assumed it was a newer model and was an overnight success. However, as I am starting to learn, overnight successes often take many years to come to fruition.Ruben starts off explaining what SAMR is and provides some nice, easy to understand examples for each of the four letters in SAMR. He goes on to cover a whole lot more; a worthy listen!Tweetable Quotes I started working on SAMR in the 80'sTweet ThisSAMR stands for Substitution Augmentation Modification RedefinitionThis popular graphic provides a great visual explanation. BioDr. Ruben Puentedura is the Founder and President of Hippasus, a consulting firm based in Western Massachusetts, focusing on transformative applications of information technologies to education. He has implemented these approaches for over twenty-five years at a range of K-20 educational institutions, as well as health and arts organizations. He is the creator of the SAMR model for selecting, using, and evaluating technology in education, which currently guides the work of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, as well as multiple other projects worldwide. He is also the author of The EdTech Quintet, a categorization of the core technology toolset required for education derived from the Horizon Report. His current work explores new directions in mobile computing, digital storytelling, learning analytics, and educational gaming, focusing on applications in areas where they have not been traditionally employed. This session will describe a JISC-funded project exploring the use of ‘Augmented Reality’ (AR) as an academic resource, enabling learners to interact and engage with biodiversity data on the University of Exeter campus, and offering new opportunities for blended learning. Augmented Reality technologies enable detailed, computer-enhanced layers to be added to the physical world, offering significant contextual and immersive learning experiences for a range of audiences, including undergraduate students. These technologies are predicted to become widespread in coming years (Horizon Report, 2010), offering a convergence-based approach to the geographies of learning – for example linking learning material to notable locations and the content that denotes their importance.
The end of term was a busy one for both of us so we've put together two podcasts that we created and thought best to send out together.
