An Auckland woman who can no longer move her legs after inhaling nitrous oxide - otherwise known as 'nangs' or 'laughing gas - is urging the government to regulate the sale of the gas. Nitrous oxide has been used as an anaesthetic for over than 150 years, but it's also popular as a recreational drug. Auckland City Hospital Neurology Registrar, Dr Shilpan Patel, told Heather du Plessis-Allan “We've seen people inhaling hundreds of canisters a day come in with injuries – as well as people who've only had a handful.” Patel says “It's quite a serious condition that can have long-lasting consequences for otherwise young, fit and well people.” LISTEN ABOVE. Asthma hospitalisations have fallen 20 percent in four years. Asthma affects one in eight New Zealanders - and more than 500,000 take medication for their symptoms. Asthma and Respiratory Foundation CEO Letitia Harding says the drop in hospitalisations is mostly due to a new medication. "This has actually really been down to a new type of inhaler, which is what we call your two-in-one combination inhaler." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Horses and people are still hospitalised after a number of animals belonging to the Household Cavalry ran through the streets of London. Four of the seven horses threw off their riders after being spooked by a loud noise yesterday. UK Correspondent Vincent McAviney told Andrew Dickens that they were right by Buckingham Palace, running through some of the busiest streets in the city. He said that it frightened a lot of people, one horse crashing into a cyclist, another into a taxi, and a third into a double decker bus. The Chair of General Practice New Zealand says GP capacity issues are becoming a crisis. Te Whatu Ora Health NZ says an overloaded primary healthcare system is to blame for more children turning up at hospital. Bryan Betty says a third of GPs have closed their books, but most are trying to accommodate their base with acute on-the-day appointments, where parents of sick kids can try first. "If capacity is reached or something happens where you can't get in, then you'd need to go to an after-hours medical centre or you'd need to go to an ED if you are concerned, because the prime thing is the child." Hospitalisations of young children that could have been prevented with better primary care have dramatically risen. Te Whatu Ora data shows such preventable hospitalisations for children up to four years old jumped 35 percent in the year ending June. That's nationally - and it's even higher for Auckland alone, at 66 percent. Interim chief clinical officer, Dr Richard Sullivan, says more young people are turning up with pneumonia and gastro illnesses. "So we're really focusing on how we support our communities, our primary care colleagues- to really turn that dial around." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

G'day Folks, On the first show for 2023 Andy and I tackle a few developing stories but first, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!! We hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years. A well deserved break was needed. For this show we discussed: Activist Katie Hopkins (from the UK) video discusses the plan for Oxford's 15 Minute City which is really just a way to curtail freedoms and keep people from moving about freely. The ever encroaching control grid is now becoming a reality. We have been discussing it on previous shows and as new developments come to fruition we believe it to be necessary to go over the details and read between the lies to bring you what the real agenda is. Don't forget that Melbourne and Sydney have their version of these "15 Minute Cities" starting soon. NSW Health Department recently published their data (which they have done regularly) of their COVID-19 Weekly Data Overview. And as per usual folks the data doesn't lie. Hospital admissions and ICU admissions for "Covid-19 patients" is yet again not looking good for the vaccinated. This data is quite shocking. 810 Hospitalisations for people with 4 or more COVID vaccinated people and wait for it... 0 yes ZERO for the unvaccinated. This data is absolutely damning for the NSW government and their COVID-19 vaccination and booster campaign. The more shots you have the sicker you will be. It's in the data. Which is why, it was recently revealed, the NSW government will NO LONGER BE REPORTING THE VACCINATION STATUS OF THOSE ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL AND ICU! It would appear Dr Kerry Chant and Brad Hazzard are sick of looking like buffoons so they intend to lie by omission. We also share an interesting video on a FOI request which was partially granted and shows that certain Pfizer COVID-19 batches were responsible for deaths here in Australia. The TGA new this. A new wave of Covid-19 is emerging in Europe, with a corresponding bump in hospitalisations. The World Health Organisation says it's clear the pandemic is not over yet and it is seeing indicators rising again, suggesting another wave of infections has begun. Back here a scientist says the resurgence is being driven by the new subvariants, as the Ministry of Health confirms the first case of the Omicron subvariant BQ.1.1. in the country. Dr Joep de Ligt, the senior science lead for genomics at the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) talks to Lisa Owen.
The South Island has the highest rate of Covid-19 hospitalisations in the country. Nationally, there's been some cause for optimisim in the outbreak, with case numbers and the weekly hospitalisation rates going down in many areas. But Te Waipounamu is still leading the way, putting pressure on health teams. Health Correspondent Rowan Quinn reports.
The hospital system is at risk of breaking under the pressure of rising COVID cases. Hospitals are understaffed due to thousands of workers in isolation. Patients are being treated in corridors. Elective surgery has been cancelled. Emergency departments are overflowing with patients, without enough beds and staff to treat them. Most recently, NSW nurses protested to raise attention of the seriousness of these issues – it's not just about an exhausted workforce, it seriously impacts patient outcomes. But what to do about it? On the Grattan Podcast, Peter Breadon, Health and Aged Care Program Director, and Owain Emslie, Senior Associate, join host Kat Clay, to discuss how to respond to surging COVID hospitalisations in the Australian health system. Van Badham and Ben Davison look at how John Barliaro has come totally unstuck as his former chief of staff testifies that the former NSW Nationals Deputy Premier created the New York trade position with every intention of taking the job himself. Tanya Plibersek has released the previous Morrison government's environment report which has some damming facts and figures about the state of Australia's environment. Van and Ben discuss the Labor promise to establish an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their commitment to protecting 30% of our land and water by 2030. New research has confirmed what we, unions and economists have been saying; Corporate greed and profiteering, not wages, is driving up inflation. Ben and Van look at the villains who run Qantas, Merrivale, and CSL to discuss how greed, contempt for workers and hypocritical behaviour needs to be removed from corporate Australia. A listener who works for CSL, and joined their union after listening to the podcast, wrote to us and we share their story of being given a real pay cut by a CEO being paid nearly $60M that receives billions in taxpayer funding. Plus COVID is getting worse. Hospitalisations are up, deaths are up and the union movement is calling for employers to provide RATS, work from home where they can, masks and paid leave to isolate as more and more health care workers are getting sick. As of next Tuesday, people travelling to New Zealand will no longer need a negative pre-departure test.A Government source has confirmed the requirement will be dropped as of 11.59pm on Monday. An announcement by new Covid-19 Response Minister Ayesha Verrall is scheduled for later today. The current rule means people coming to New Zealand by air must get a negative PCR, RAT or Lamp test 72 hours before departing on the flight to New Zealand.Pre-departure testing is one of the last border restrictions still in place. It is not the last however: even when pre-departure testing is gone, non-citizens and non-residents will still require proof of vaccination to travel here.New Zealand is one of a diminishing number of countries to have pre-departure tests and tourism operators had voiced concerns that testing was putting travellers off.The Government is also concerned it will become more difficult to get pre-departure tests as more and more countries drop them as requirements for travel. The United States dropped its pre-departure testing requirement on Sunday.Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had said the tests would be gone by July 31 at the latest, but the Government's increased confidence in the Covid outlook has meant this date could be brought forward."While we are still working through this transition, it's fair to say we are confident that pre-departure testing will be removed by the time we come to the final phase of our reopening in July," Ardern said earlier this year. The timing will also allow the border to be more fully open for the ski season and Australia's coming school holidays. The final phase of border reopening will occur on 11.59pm on July 31, when all vaccinated travellers and students will be able to enter New Zealand, provided they have a visa. Pre-departure tests into New Zealand will soon be gone, a welcome move for travellers. Photo / Michael CraigPeople who arrive in New Zealand are also given a pack of RATs to do after arrival. About 90 per cent of people are completing these tests and 2-3 per cent are reporting a positive result. The Government does not see this changing significantly after the requirements are dropped.National has been calling for pre-departure testing to go. Earlier this week, the party's Covid-19 response spokesman Chris Bishop said the tests should be dropped."The world is moving on, but New Zealand insists that anyone coming here must present a negative test before getting on a plane," Bishop said."Pre-departure tests made sense when we were pursuing elimination. But they make zero sense when we already have thousands of cases a day at home," he said.Covid cases continue to level off after a peak earlier in the year. Another peak is expected later in the year, but the Government does not expect this to be impacted by changes at the border.Hospitalisations with Covid-19 are also levelling off. The seven-day average of people in hospital with or due to the virus was 362 yesterday, down from over 900 during the peak earlier this year. The Government does not believe dropping pre-departure testing will lead to a surge of domestic infection.- Thomas Coughlan, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
