Ultimately we need to know that life is a precious gift. We're blessed with an opportunity to see just how good we can be at something we love doing. We get to have a ball for many years seeing how many wonderful things we can do with our lives. We may or may not win the external prizes, but when we live like that, we win the ultimate prize: peace of mind. - Bob Rotella, How Champions Think

Back in 2004, a mentor convinced me reading was a life hack. They spent an entire breakfast convincing me to set aside enough time to expand my worldview while learning from those who've "done it before." Since then, we've been trying to devour 2 to 3 books per month on leadership, business and psychology. I'm 164 books deep. Of that list, here are the 5 books I've found most impactful to our journey in building TicketManager and my career: a. Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Changes the way we see our decisions, how we make them and where we are clouded in our decision making by subconscious bias we are not aware of. IMHO, this Nobel prize winning masterpiece should be required reading in school. For those who find it reads too much like a text book, "The Undoing Project" by Michael Lewis is a sort of 'Thinking Fast and Slow Lite.' Both terrific reads. b. How Champions Think by Bob Rotella - Rotella has spent his professional life maximizing the potential of athletes and leaders. There are a ton of gurus, like Rotella, however I find most of them to be pop-psychologists telling people what they want to hear as opposed to what actually works in the real world marathon that is life. Rotella has an impressive track record of practical psychology. To that end…. c. Emotional Agility by Susan David - An expert psychologist who digs deep into why we do what we do, how we feel when we do it, and gives practical explanations for living beyond the all-to-common motivational speakers. She's incredible. I had the privilege of having lunch with her once and her EQ is off-the-charts. Everything can't be optimism all the time, and that's a good, and healthy, aspect of life. I'm so thankful for her work and how it has helped us grow a business. d. The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz - The most real, practical, and straightforward business book I've ever read. It's required reading for anyone looking to be an entrepreneur. A masterpiece. Had I read it four years earlier, as we were starting the business, I would have saved millions of dollars and countless hours of heartache. e. Influence by Robert Cialdini - Written in 1984 and even more applicable today. The book seems so obvious when reading, as most truths usually appear when we uncover them. Put together, however, the six rules of influence are as powerful as they are dangerous. There's a reason it has gotten more popular with age. The reader can quickly see how the ideas are weaponized in commerce, politics, business and social circles. An added bonus - "The Sure Thing," an article by Malcolm Gladwell, is the best explanation of entrepreneurs I've come across and is worth reading multiple times through the journey I hope these help and am always looking for great reads and suggestions!

As you know if you’ve been following along, I’m a big fan of mental toughness books—whether that’s coming from peak performers in the sports world or the Special Forces or other leadership roles.    See Notes on: How Champions Think, The Champion’s Mind, Winning the Inner Game of Tennis, Win Forever, Go Long!, Chasing Excellence, Coaching the Mental Game, 10-Minute Toughness, The Hoops Whisperer, Raise Your Game, The Art of the Fight, Win or Learn, Unbeatable Mind, Can’t Hurt Me, Discipline Equals Freedom, etc., etc. etc.   So…   When our Optimizers recommended I check out a book called It Takes What It Takes by Trevor Moawad, I immediately Amazon-ed it. And, when I got it on Saturday afternoon, I immediately started reading it (literally) and had it nearly read by the end of the weekend.   Trevor Moawad is a mental conditioning coach to elite performers. He is well known for being the mental coach to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and has worked closely with prestigious NCAA football programs and coaches, the US Special Operations community, Major League Baseball, and the NBA.   This book is, as per the sub-title, all about “How to Think Neutrally and Gain Control of Your Life.” I loved it and, if you’re equally fired up by the mental-toughness-in-sports-and-life genre, I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.    Trevor’s ideas on “neutral thinking” (vs. negative or positive thinking) are genius. We’ll talk more about those soon.   But…    Today I want to chat about another one of his big distinctions.   Quick context.   At this stage, we’ve probably all heard about the whole progression from being “unconsciously incompetent” to “consciously incompetent” to “consciously competent” to “unconsciously competent.”   Basically: Most people say we want to go from being unconsciously incompetent (where you don’t know what you don’t know and therefore can’t address it) to consciously incompetent (where you know what you don’t know and can get to work on it) to consciously competent (where you know what you know but need to think about it to do it) to unconsciously competent (where you just do what you do without thinking about it).   Note: The highest level of development, they say, is being unconsciously competent.   Trevor tells us that he looks at it a little differently.    In his work with some of the world’s elite, he’s noticed that many peak performers don’t know HOW they perform at such a high level and that’s NOT a good thing if they want to SUSTAIN their world-class level of performance.   So…   He shuffles the order around a bit and tells us that what we REALLY want to do is go from unconsciously incompetent to consciously incompetent to unconsciously competent to CONSCIOUSLY COMPETENT.   He tells us that we’ve GOTTA KNOW what works for us and then DO THAT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.    THAT’s how the greatest become the greatest.   Now…   He doesn’t use the word “protocol” but, elite performers basically know their protocol and they work it. RUTHLESSLY.   That’s Today’s +1.   What do YOU do when you’re on?   Are you doing it?   Let’s make our Competence CONSCIOUS.   TODAY.   And repeat it.    Day after day after day after day x Infinity.

In our last +1, we talked about LeBron James and the fact that he tries to get 11 to 12 hours of sleep per day when he’s training. (So does Roger Federer. And, Tom Brady is in bed at 8:30.)    Let’s talk about LeBron a little more today.    Renowned mental toughness coach Bob Rotella kicks off his book How Champions Think with a story about how LeBron thinks.    It goes something like this.   Once upon a time early in LeBron’s career, Rotella spent some time working with LeBron. He knew the basics. Six-eight. A chiseled two hundred fifty pounds with explosive speed. A proven superstar. But it wasn’t until they sat down and chatted that he REALLY got LeBron’s power.   Rotella asked him about his goals. LeBron told him: “I want to be the greatest basketball player in history.”    Rotella thought: “Beautiful. This is a truly talented guy.”    He tells us what he was MOST impressed by: “It was not that he had physical gifts. It was LeBron’s mind.”    Specifically, it was the way he saw himself that most moved Rotella: “The vital importance of that sort of attitude is the foremost thing I have learned about exceptionalism in my decades of work with people striving to be great.”   That’s worth repeating. Rotella has worked with THE top performers for DECADES. The “foremost thing” he has learned about exceptionalism and people striving to be great? The vital importance of seeing themselves and their potential with such audacious (!) clarity.   Which begs the question: How do YOU see yourself?    Now, continuing our story… After LeBron told Rotella he wanted to be the greatest basketball player in history (!!!), Rotella asked him where he thought he stood in relation to that goal. LeBron told him he thought he was doing pretty well but that he wasn’t going to be the greatest if his teams didn’t win championships and they weren’t going to do that unless he became a better three-point shooter.   Long story short: Rotella told him to create a video montage of him nailing threes from every spot on the court. Set it to music. Watch it every night. FEEL it. Program his subconscious mind.   And, he told him to hire a shooting coach, work with him every day and make two hundred three-point shots off the dribble every day while imagining the best defender guarding him. Then make another two hundred catch-and-shoot three-pointers. “I told him I didn’t care how many shots it took to make those four hundred three-pointers, or how long it took. If he wanted to be great, he would find the time and find the energy.”   Rotella continues: “The actual number of shots I suggested was not as important, in my mind, as the idea that LeBron would set a practice goal for himself, commit to achieving it every day, and wait patiently for the results.”   Fast-forward. LeBron went from being a 29% three-point shooter in his rookie season to a 40% beast—collecting a few championships en route to his quest to be the greatest player ever.   Of course, this Idea has nothing to do with LeBron James and his three-pointers.    It has to do with YOU.    In what domain are you committed to being exceptional?    Where do you think you stand in relation to that goal?    And what do you think you need to do every day (!!) to have a shot at being your exceptional best?   Find the time. Find the energy. Be an exception. Be exceptional.

Zen Jaskiniowca – zrozumieć i wcielić

"To Ty piszesz historię własnego życia. Więc jaka ona będzie? Bohaterska, czy też będzie to historia o kimś, kto ledwo sobie radzi? Będziesz gwiazdą czy będziesz jedynie grzać ławkę rezerwowych? Bo widzisz - to co sądzimy o sobie w wielkim stopniu determinuje jakość naszego życia. Więc MOŻESZ WYBRAĆ wiarę we własne możliwości i dzięki temu osiągać, dążyć, ryzykować i rosnąć. Albo możesz wybrać kurczowe trzymanie się bezpieczeństwa i przeciętności. MOŻESZ ZOSTAĆ kimś kto nie narzuca sobie żadnych sztucznych ograniczeń, kto stawia sobie wielkie i ambitne cele i ma ogromne marzenia. Albo możesz zostać filozofem najgorszego rodzaju - czyli takim, który znajduje usprawiedliwienia dla swoich porażek i własnej przeciętności. MOŻESZ ZAKOCHAĆ SIĘ we własnych możliwościach i własnym potencjale i POSTANOWIĆ możliwości te jeszcze powiększać. Albo uznać,
