POPULARITY
Pete Carroll changed my life.I can vividly recall calling a few of my teammates at Pitt during my first week on the job as a member of the USC Football staff in the winter of 2005. “Guys, I wish you could have been coached by Pete Carroll and this staff. It's incredible!”My former teammates would often ask why and while I couldn't nail the answer, I could compete to explain the energy, optimism and education he shared every day. From the moment I met him at 19-years-old to now, there has not been a greater influence in all aspects of my life. Of course in football, as Coach Carroll offered me a lens into the game that very few have. But he also impacted me as a friend, father and husband. I've often said that my parents created the clay that is my life and Pete molded it in my 20s. A month before I got married, I flew to Seattle as I just had to get some time with Coach. He had been in the NFL for a while and I'd been building my life in Los Angeles. We would speak a few times a year and each time, I felt impacted. We sat down in his corner office on a random Wednesday at the Seahawks facility and for 60 minutes he just coached me on marriage. “Yogi, you have to compete at this thing. Compete to listen, compete to show up, compete to see her.” I thought we might talk about his team, my career, and maybe my pending wedding but it was all about life off the field. As I reflected back on my flight home, I came to the conclusion that our conversation was a master class on all things human interaction. And I missed it.For four years at USC, I would experience those conversations almost daily. I was the young coach sleeping in the office and he was the head coach, at times also sleeping in the office. That was where we would connect and eventually formulate ideas and concepts that at their core, were about impacting people to maximize their potential. Or as he would say, Win Forever. One of my core memories at USC, that extended beyond the field, was when Coach Carroll invited me on one of his annual Tuesday night visits to South Central Los Angeles. We walked the city, met with locals and even played some hoops in a nearby gym. That night under a light post I was able to get him one-on-one, away from others. I asked him a simple question, “Pete, it's the middle of September, and tonight is your birthday…why are you pouring so much into others and why are you barely speaking?”He looked toward the skyline and softly responded, “Because I have to. And they don't need to hear from me. I don't need to talk, I need to listen.”Those words are stitched on my soul as Pete Carroll has always made anyone in his path feel seen, and always heard. It's game week in college football and on the bottom of my broadcasting board reads, “listen like your life depends on it.” That's attributed to the man who took the time to listen to a 19 year old in college, a 22 year old on his staff and in today's podcast, a man in his early 40s who is still seeking knowledge from a man who has so much to give.I hope you enjoy our conversation, presented by our founding partner in 76, as it was my most enjoyable in quite some time. This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby with cinematography and editing by Blue Ox Films. This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. The Seahawks won back-to-back games for the only time in the 2021 season and they did it in very strong vashion. The OFF/DEF/SPEC Teams all looked solid as they went to town against the 32nd ranked OFF/DEF and a lot of the credit goes to the OL and Penny. They just defeated the division leading Cardinals but have been hit with confirmed Covid case after case. Sixteen players have been placed on the covid list for the Rams; zero on the Seahawks. I hope you enjoy this commentary on Pete Carroll's "Win Forever"!
As you know if you’ve been following along, I’m a big fan of mental toughness books—whether that’s coming from peak performers in the sports world or the Special Forces or other leadership roles. See Notes on: How Champions Think, The Champion’s Mind, Winning the Inner Game of Tennis, Win Forever, Go Long!, Chasing Excellence, Coaching the Mental Game, 10-Minute Toughness, The Hoops Whisperer, Raise Your Game, The Art of the Fight, Win or Learn, Unbeatable Mind, Can’t Hurt Me, Discipline Equals Freedom, etc., etc. etc. So… When our Optimizers recommended I check out a book called It Takes What It Takes by Trevor Moawad, I immediately Amazon-ed it. And, when I got it on Saturday afternoon, I immediately started reading it (literally) and had it nearly read by the end of the weekend. Trevor Moawad is a mental conditioning coach to elite performers. He is well known for being the mental coach to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and has worked closely with prestigious NCAA football programs and coaches, the US Special Operations community, Major League Baseball, and the NBA. This book is, as per the sub-title, all about “How to Think Neutrally and Gain Control of Your Life.” I loved it and, if you’re equally fired up by the mental-toughness-in-sports-and-life genre, I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Trevor’s ideas on “neutral thinking” (vs. negative or positive thinking) are genius. We’ll talk more about those soon. But… Today I want to chat about another one of his big distinctions. Quick context. At this stage, we’ve probably all heard about the whole progression from being “unconsciously incompetent” to “consciously incompetent” to “consciously competent” to “unconsciously competent.” Basically: Most people say we want to go from being unconsciously incompetent (where you don’t know what you don’t know and therefore can’t address it) to consciously incompetent (where you know what you don’t know and can get to work on it) to consciously competent (where you know what you know but need to think about it to do it) to unconsciously competent (where you just do what you do without thinking about it). Note: The highest level of development, they say, is being unconsciously competent. Trevor tells us that he looks at it a little differently. In his work with some of the world’s elite, he’s noticed that many peak performers don’t know HOW they perform at such a high level and that’s NOT a good thing if they want to SUSTAIN their world-class level of performance. So… He shuffles the order around a bit and tells us that what we REALLY want to do is go from unconsciously incompetent to consciously incompetent to unconsciously competent to CONSCIOUSLY COMPETENT. He tells us that we’ve GOTTA KNOW what works for us and then DO THAT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THAT’s how the greatest become the greatest. Now… He doesn’t use the word “protocol” but, elite performers basically know their protocol and they work it. RUTHLESSLY. That’s Today’s +1. What do YOU do when you’re on? Are you doing it? Let’s make our Competence CONSCIOUS. TODAY. And repeat it. Day after day after day after day x Infinity.

At Dawgman.com, we've been lucky to form strong relationships with people in the nation and regional media and one personality who has been gracious to us time and again is Yogi Roth, a renaissance man if you will, who recently sat down with Kim Grinolds to discuss myriad subjects as we prepare for the official start of the 2019 football season. First a little background on Roth. After playing wide receiver at Pittsburgh during his days as a student athlete, Roth transitioned to coaching and joined the USC Football staff while earning magna cum laude with a master’s degree in Communications Management at the Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism. His bio on his website YogiRoth.com also says... He was also the co-founder of Win Forever, LLC with Pete Carroll, which was a company dedicated to coaching coaches on the development of a philosophy. As an actor Yogi has appeared on Comedy Central, multiple national commercials and in various independent films. An explorer of over 30 countries Yogi enjoys unplanned adventures, surfing and a local latte. Of the many subjects they touched on, Roth shared some of his conversation with former Husky quarterback Jake Haener who opted to transfer over the weekend after Washington head coach Chris Petersen named Jacob Eason as the starter for their game against Eastern Washington on Saturday. Roth also discussed the transfer portal and how it could impact things in the future as well as the effects it is currently having on roster management and recruiting, not only for the Huskies, but the other programs in the country as well. Grinolds, in addition to finding out the best spot for a burger in the Venice/Marina Del Ray area, also got Roth to talk about his recent nuptials as well has how the parent involvement has escalated in recent years and how the 7v7 circuit has impacted football and what it could mean in the future. What is better: competing or winning? This question was asked to Pete Carroll on his first day as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. His answer was easy Competing. Why? Because it lasts longer. Pete Caroll is a super bowl winning head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and legendary college football coach of the USC Trojans. Ever since he was a little kid he always competed hard for everything he wanted. Early on in his coaching career, he used this attitude to help him rise in the coaching ranks, and he started to realize that if he was truly going to reach his potential as a coach he needed to stop worrying about winning or losing, and focus on just competing every day. He first implemented his newly found philosophy at USC and went on to win multiple championships, and later went on to the NFL where he led the Seattle Seahawks to a super bowl victory. All these experiences led him to create his own leadership philosophy. "If you want to win forever, always compete"

The rollercoaster 2017 season continues; after their most complete game of the year against the "best" team in the NFL, the Seahawks shoot themselves in the foot on their way to a tough 30-24 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wilson sets an NFL record with this 16th & 17th fourth-quarter TD but it goes all for naught as a missed call and failed execution give the ball back to the Jags to end the game. Seahawks lose their LB pair and then a fight ensues with multiple flags on the players and coaches. Now it's back to CenturyLink to rebound and face the Los Angeles Rams for 1st place in the NFC West. Topic #1 - Pete champions the mantra "Win Forever;" but are we seeing cracks in the philosophy? Topic #2 - In all five losses this year, the Seahawks have been within one-score; is this their competitive nature or a flawed team? Topic #3 Homer Corner - What is your responsibility as a fan to the Seahawks? Topic #4 - Los Angeles Rams Can the Seahawks rally around a backyard offense to defeat the Rams? Fantasy Update: #1 Alice in Horns (Laurel) vs. #4 No Extra Lives (Ross) #2 Lior's Rad Team (Lior) vs. #3 Bye Week (Matty) 5th Place Game #5 Mega Wilson X (Sam) vs. #6 Offensive PI (Zeb) Predictions: Final Score: Seahawks vs. Rams 1st-3rd Qtr Score vs 4th Qtr Score: Seahawks More Rushing Attempts: Wilson vs. Seahawks RBs Total Points Over/Under: 48 Points Blair Walsh Long FG Attempt Over/Under: 45-yard FG Longest play of the game: Pass/Run/INT/Fumble/Kick Return/Punt Return Rebound Player of the Week? One of the best coaches in the NFL wrote a book outlining his philosophy, so I feel it's a no-brainer to read it and mine for gold. In this episode, I break down what I learned from Pete Carroll about the power of communication, and why it's critical to get right as a leader... and why it's deadly if you don't.

Colby Patnode started coaching baseball 2 days after he finished playing for his high school team. He is now 24 and has coached multiple baseball teams, both travel and school teams through the high school varsity level. He lives in Yakima, Washington. Twitter: @CPat11 Facebook: /colby.patnode Listen Now: Listen on iTunes: iTunes link Listen on Stitcher: Stitcher link Listen on Google Play Music: Google Play link Quote 'Adversity turns weak teams into victims and strong teams into competitors' My Cringe Moments Colby was frustrated with a call - and instead of going out to talk to the umpire- he threw a baseball into the empty field next to him. Then to make matters worse- when a parent asked him to set a better example - he told the parent to sit down. Communication with parents The key is to establish communication early and let the parents know you plans right from the start. Then over-communicate with everything going on with the team. Colby asks the parents to not talk to him during games or practices - and to wait at least 3-4 hours after a game. Teaching Skills Never assume that kids know something until you see them do it - always start with the basics. 'Learn your learner' - Pete Carroll phrase - it starts with understanding each kid and where they are at No live batting practice - Coach Patnode finds it is a waste of time for most of the players. Keep everything competitive - Coach will break up into 2 teams of six and then have them all bunt and keep track of which team lays down more successful bunts, do the same with hit and runs, etc. Mental Toughness/Achieving Peak Performance Kids will perform much better when they play for each other vs. playing out of fear Set specific and achievable goals, and then expect for them to be met by the players Culture – Discipline/Rewards/Teambuilding The more rules you have - the more rules kids are going to break 3 rules: 1- Protect the team 2 - Protect the brand/game 3- Do your best HUGE IDEA Quality at Bats - Instead of keeping on-base % or batting average - Keep the stat that rewards the behavior you want - a hard hit ball - Then set your lineup based on the highest Quality-At-Bat % Impacting Kids Coach Patnode witnessed one kid who lacked confidence turn things around and start playing aggressively after the coaches continued to encourage him to play without fear of mistakes Coach had another kid who when the pitching coach went to the mound to take him out said 'Get off my mound, I'm finishing this' - great example of a kid not giving up and not wanting the easy way out but wanting to grind The One that got away Colby shares a story of almost making it to the state championship his senior year- but getting upset by a team they probably shouldn't have. Best borrowed/stolen idea Cobly realized that some of the high school kids were intimidated by having a coach who was so close to the same age as them - so he told them to call him Colby or Patnode - they didn't have to call him coach Whatever level you are coaching at - get to know the coaches at the next level, and ask them about expectations for new players - then implement some of these standards and let the kids know you are doing it to prepare them for the next level Favorite coaching book/quote Quote: 'Adversity turns weak teams into victims and strong teams into competitors' Books: Anything by John Wooden 'The Score will Take Care of Itself' - by Bill Walsh 'Win Forever' - by Pete Carroll TED talks: Dr. Angela Duckworth - The key to success is grit/determination John Wooden - The difference between winning and succeeding Parting Advice Treat everyone fair, but don't treat them all the same.
