His younger years were spent in Florida and eventually moved to Vermont his 8th grade year. Upon graduating, he took an athletic scholarship to compete in track and field at Lynchburg college, in Virginia. He did 2 years of premed before feeling a need to take break from his studies. Mountain enlisted in the marine corps in 2005 and served until almost 2016. He did 5 tours, 4 conducting combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Oman, and other various places around the HOA(horn of Africa) and the Middle East. On his 4th deployment (1st to Afghan) he was part of the TEDD program, and where he got his start with dogs. Upon his final promotion, he became the rifle program manager for the Marine Corps. Immediately after his EAS, he dove head first back into dogs. He mentored and studied under some not so great guys, and some great ones. He spent the next few years traveling around the country and attending every class and seminar he could. He eventually started working contracts as an explosives detection handler, and soon after training EDD's for the company, and eventually working a pilot program for the DoD for US Special Operations. It was an advanced Mountain K9 course. In the constant pursuit of knowledge, and chasing his passion for dogs, today Mountain finds himself instructing for Spikes K9's “Spikes School.”  He provides tracking courses for agencies around the country, at no cost to the departments.  He assists his good friend Armin Winkler with the conduct of handler courses and education for different Tier 1 and 2 assets from the US and abroad.  He was an assistant instructor at this year's ATK9 conference and gave lectures at HITS, ranging from behavioral science applied in training, laser directionals, and special operations tactical K9 integration. Currently Mountain lives in Virginia with his amazing wife Ashley, and 3 children: Elijah, Jack, and Tuesday. Meet Dr. Angus Fletcher. Dr. Fletcher has his PhD from Yale and is the Professor of Story Science at Ohio State's Project Narrative. His research has been called "mind-blowing" by Malcolm Gladwell and "life-changing" by Brene Brown. In 2023, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his work with US Special Operations on training the brain to act smarter in chaos. He began working with the Army's Command and General Staff College two years ago, both virtually and by conducting in-person sessions at military bases.“If you can come up with an original action and you put two actions together, that's an original plan. And then you start to put a lot of actions together, and that's an original strategy,” Fletcher said. “We wanted to train up these areas of the brain that allow you to come up with original actions, plans, plus strategies, so that when you're in an environment that's a contested space, when someone else is trying to break your plan, you can come up with a new plan that allows you to achieve what it was you wanted to do in the beginning.”So how does this apply to our new mission after the military? Sam and Emma host Jonah Furman of Labor Notes and author of the Who Gets The Bird? newsletter on SubStack to discuss the recent negotiations between rail workers, railroad companies, and the Biden administration. Then they are joined by investigative reporter Seth Harp to discuss his recent reporting surrounding the recent deaths and opioid abuse at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Emma and Sam first run through updates on the Fed's plan to discipline labor by tanking the economy into a recession, migrants file a class-action suit against DeSantis for his stunt, and DeSantis discusses his “Ultimate Solution.” Jonah Furman then joins as they get right into the three-year leadup to last Thursday's sudden climax of a potential rail strike in the US, walking through separate processes for labor organizing in the rail industry, the need for a 30-day cool-off period, and why Biden got involved, before parsing through the federal deal recommended and why it got so much pushback from the various railway unions. Next, he, Sam, and Emma explore how the rail industry came to be under different processes, with 19th Century unrest leading to the 1926 Railway Labor Act that works to keep the country's infrastructure moving, and leading up to the conditions we see today, where workers are expected to constantly be on call with no right to call out for an emergency and the workforce getting cut more and more while production increases. After a brief conversation on the role of monopoly and the leverage that the federal government could hold in this situation, they wrap up by tackling the state of their strike fund, and where this action is likely to head next. Emma is then joined by Seth Harp to get into the developing controversy coming out of the Fort Bragg military base, with a series of murders and executions piling up from 2020 through 2021 alongside increased overdoses and various drug possession and dealing charges all coming out of an institution that was supposedly the pinnacle of US Special Operations, with JSOC, Green Berets, and more all stationed there. They tackle the history of the US Military and Special Operations in mass drug trafficking, the incredible autonomy and power held by these unelected officials, and how this controversy encapsulates the myriad failures of the US Wars on Terror and Drugs. And in the Fun Half: Sam hosts Brad Polumbo, journalist and policy correspondent at the Foundation for Economic Education, on the immorality of student debt forgiveness, whether debt cancellation is debt transfer, the benefits of college, why daddy paying for college is okay but big brother doing so is bad, and how to grapple with being anti-regressive policy and anti-taxation. Sam and Emma also touch on Ronna McDaniel responding to accusations of Republican fear-mongering by pointing out how scary the world is, Matt DePerno on Michigan's potential abortion ban, and Stephen Crowder talks with a gay guy about how much women SUCK, plus, your IMs! Tran will be the entertainment at our 70th Annual Conference of Members in November during Saturday Night's Installation Dinner!   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ About Thom Tran Los Angeles-based comedian, musician, and U.S. military veteran and advocate Thom Tran started his career as a standup comic after a combat injury ended his career as a soldier. Thom enlisted in the United States Army at 18 years old before he even finished high school. After joining the Army, Thom spent his entire career as a Communications Sergeant as well as a Civil Affairs Sergeant within the United States Army's Special Operations Community. In 2003, four days after crossing the border into Iraq, Thom was wounded during a firefight when a sniper's bullet found it's way to the back of his skull. He bandaged himself up, continued the mission, and finished his 12 month tour in Iraq. But his wounds would eventually bring an end to his military life. After redeploying to the United States, Thom was medically retired in 2005. Post-combat, comedy saved his life. After touring the United States as a road comic, Thom moved to Los Angeles in 2008 and two years later created The GIs of Comedy Tour, a Comedic Troupe of Troops that has toured all over the United States and to nearly two dozen different countries performing to audiences both military and civilian, bringing the healing power of laughter to those who need it the most. In 2019, Thom & several members of the GIs of Comedy appeared on the Netflix series, “Larry Charles' Dangerous World of Comedy.” and toured nearly 30 US Air Force bases across the continental US. The group has raised over $30,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a charity that raises college scholarship funds for the children of fallen US Special Operations personnel. When Thom isn't on the road he makes his home in Hollywood, CA performing at The World Famous Laugh Factory & clubs all over SoCal. He also works as the mid-day traffic anchor for SoCal radio station KNX 1070-NewsRadio. And occasionally Thom does some acting, having co-starred on Black-ish on ABC and SEAL Team & NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS. Recently, Thom's love of rock and roll finds him back on stage playing lead guitar for a heavy metal band and cover band he co-founded called, The Thom Tran Band, playing bars and nightclubs in Southern California!

Speaking of Asia Ep 7: Will immigrants really define our destiny? 37:57 mins Synopsis: Join The Straits Times's associate editor Ravi Velloor, in this series of podcasts as he distils his experience from four decades of covering the continent. In this seventh episode, he hosts Dr Parag Khanna, a scholar, global thinker and the author of several books. His experience varies from working at the World Economic Forum to advising the US Special Operations in the Middle East. Now living in Singapore as a citizen, Dr Khanna has launched his latest book called MOVE-The Forces Uprooting Us. He separates demographic facts from the usual emotions stirred by debates over migration. The book's central point is that human mobility is destiny. They discuss the following timestamped points: The global potential of Asian youth and Asian migrant trends: Who will be the winners and losers in the 21st century? (6:17) Dr Khanna breaks down the Asian diaspora: Why the Indian diaspora will be far larger than the Chinese diaspora in the next few decades (8:50) Assess countries' historical actions and just the demographic facts, as no attempts to boost fertility have worked (15:00) Lessons for Singapore as it practises a complex but rather constructive tinkering approach mixed with Singaporean-first policies? (17:35) Why Singapore's constructive tinkering can be advertised and branded better to the world; why "collecting" people is "collecting power" (20:00) Dr Khanna says there are 35 million global companies that are location-independent: Why Dubai wants a slice of that action, and can Singapore learn from it? A watershed event in the history of US Special Operations was the 1979 hostage rescue attempt at the embassy in Tehran, Iran. Known as Operations Eagle Claw, this failed mission and the tragedy at the Desert One landing site led to the formation of US SOCOM and pushed special operations into the next generation. The best way we can honor the hostages who remained in captivity and the service members who lost their lives is to draw some lessons learned and acknowledge their sacrifice for having "The Guts To Try." George has more than two decades of experience in talent acquisition at Fortune 100 and Fortune 1000 firms.About The Talent War:Foreword written by New York Times bestselling author and retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink.A must-read for any business leader looking to build elite teams and win on talent.Talent is the foundation of every success story from Silicon Valley to Wall Street to Main Street, and even on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. It's the hidden asset that never shows up on the balance sheet, despite being the driver for a company's true value. And now, in this hypercompetitive business environment, the war for talent has never been more important, or more complex. Of eight hundred CEOs and six hundred C-suite executives polled in 2019, the overwhelming majority cited the ability to attract and retain top talent as their number one concern. For your organization to win, you need to attract and retain the best talent. But without the right strategy or mindset, you won't be able to do so--and you won't be able to compete. After all, your people, not your product or service, are your strongest competitive advantage. When it comes to winning on talent, no one does it better or more consistently than the US Special Operations community. Their success comes down to their people and a widely held foundational belief: Talent + Leadership = Victory. The Talent War explores how US Special Operations Forces assess, select, and develop their world-class talent. You'll learn how to adopt a talent mindset, the single greatest weapon you can possess in the war for talent. When your organization reflects this mindset, you will hire, train, and develop the right people, and put them in the best positions to make decisions that allow you to retake the advantage and win the war.Order The Talent War:https://thetalentwar.com/

Jason Van Camp is a bad ass. That makes some people uncomfortable. Mission accomplished.Jason founded Mission Six Zero, a Leadership Training Consultancy (and so much more) after a decorated military career. Jason is a Green Beret, THE Special Forces branch of US Special Operations (more on that in the podcast). Jason received three Bronze Stars, one with a V for Valor and is the author of Deliberate Discomfort, the template for any leader to develop an elite team and as a result, elite company. It's the best book on Leadership I've ever read, and the reason we are doing this podcast.I could stop there, that's enough. That's more than most civilians (like me) could ever hope to see or accomplish. But there is so much more.Jason is extremely humble, a trait I am learning most Special Operations veterans display at all times. I think it comes from years of intense training and the confidence to know you can handle any situation, with no need to prove it. Damn.Jason started a company right out of the military - with no business experience. Why? Because he wanted more, he wanted to help others...it's how Special Operations is wired - help the person next to you be better. Mission first, team second, teammate third. That's how great companies win.We talk about starting a business, leading others on the journey and the difference between silent and quiet professionals.I learned things about leading that would never have occurred to me, or others for that matter.Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.Jason's Eating Crow Moments:Understanding "Who am I?". Find out what you stand for, what you think about on your own time. Then build your mission around what it is you are passionate about and stand for.Trust but Verify. Extending trust before it is earned is unnerving. It's the first step in building a team. Then verify. Hold your team and yourself accountable.Key Takeaways for Leaders and Entrepreneurs:Mission: You must have a mission, your company must understand this mission. Alignment, purpose and direction.Six: Create and demonstrate a "Got your six" mentality. Let your team know you have their backs and build trust, loyalty, respect and commitment. You can't lead without these important attributes of a successful team.Zero: You need a baseline - a true north. This acts both as a compass but also the standard by which you measure all improvement.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/eating-crow. As you know if you’ve been following along, I’m a big fan of mental toughness books—whether that’s coming from peak performers in the sports world or the Special Forces or other leadership roles.    See Notes on: How Champions Think, The Champion’s Mind, Winning the Inner Game of Tennis, Win Forever, Go Long!, Chasing Excellence, Coaching the Mental Game, 10-Minute Toughness, The Hoops Whisperer, Raise Your Game, The Art of the Fight, Win or Learn, Unbeatable Mind, Can’t Hurt Me, Discipline Equals Freedom, etc., etc. etc.   So…   When our Optimizers recommended I check out a book called It Takes What It Takes by Trevor Moawad, I immediately Amazon-ed it. And, when I got it on Saturday afternoon, I immediately started reading it (literally) and had it nearly read by the end of the weekend.   Trevor Moawad is a mental conditioning coach to elite performers. He is well known for being the mental coach to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and has worked closely with prestigious NCAA football programs and coaches, the US Special Operations community, Major League Baseball, and the NBA.   This book is, as per the sub-title, all about “How to Think Neutrally and Gain Control of Your Life.” I loved it and, if you’re equally fired up by the mental-toughness-in-sports-and-life genre, I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.    Trevor’s ideas on “neutral thinking” (vs. negative or positive thinking) are genius. We’ll talk more about those soon.   But…    Today I want to chat about another one of his big distinctions.   Quick context.   At this stage, we’ve probably all heard about the whole progression from being “unconsciously incompetent” to “consciously incompetent” to “consciously competent” to “unconsciously competent.”   Basically: Most people say we want to go from being unconsciously incompetent (where you don’t know what you don’t know and therefore can’t address it) to consciously incompetent (where you know what you don’t know and can get to work on it) to consciously competent (where you know what you know but need to think about it to do it) to unconsciously competent (where you just do what you do without thinking about it).   Note: The highest level of development, they say, is being unconsciously competent.   Trevor tells us that he looks at it a little differently.    In his work with some of the world’s elite, he’s noticed that many peak performers don’t know HOW they perform at such a high level and that’s NOT a good thing if they want to SUSTAIN their world-class level of performance.   So…   He shuffles the order around a bit and tells us that what we REALLY want to do is go from unconsciously incompetent to consciously incompetent to unconsciously competent to CONSCIOUSLY COMPETENT.   He tells us that we’ve GOTTA KNOW what works for us and then DO THAT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.    THAT’s how the greatest become the greatest.   Now…   He doesn’t use the word “protocol” but, elite performers basically know their protocol and they work it. RUTHLESSLY.   That’s Today’s +1.   What do YOU do when you’re on?   Are you doing it?   Let’s make our Competence CONSCIOUS.   TODAY.   And repeat it.    Day after day after day after day x Infinity.

And now he and his wife Jen have created a the All Secure Foundation supporting combat veterans and their families dealing the multi-faceted problems that stay with them after the missions.  Please make a donation!  It's our turn to be the warriors for those men and women who were warriors for us and others on the battle field.  All Secure Foundation.
