Hugh Halter joins us to tell his story and how suffering, sacrificial living and following the daily bread crumbs of God leads us into God's bigger story.
Table Talks are extended evenings of stories and theology. Our community hosts these with internal and external voices to focus on specific conversations. We eat food and let the night's topic breathe by offering extended space for conversation afterward. In this recording, we hear from a pioneer and our dear friend Hugh Halter. Hugh has been pushing boundaries and prophetically challenging the church to see things in different ways for almost 40 years. To learn more about his current work visit his Brave Cties Website or check out his two most recent books: Brave Cities and Righteous Brood.

While many of you know that I work with an organization called WellBuilt Cities you might not know that I have been working with other city builders from around the nation with Hugh Halter and Taylor McCall. Hugh and Taylor have written a book called Brave Cities which is due to be released in just a few months. In the book they explore lots of questions about the changing landscape of faith, church, and life. They share countless stories and lessons from their experience cultivating Kingdom ecosystems. The Grey Pages Podcast is where Hugh, Taylor, Jon & friends explore and reflect on this journey together. There are a lot of publications out there known as White Papers that give an in-depth report or guide on a specific topic over which the author has deep knowledge and mastery. Grey Pages are not as much of a guide or a report as a shared journey of discovery. Things are not always as black and white as we might like, join us as we journey into the grey. This first episode is now available on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts. Where are we going? We're going to talk about seeing church as a city we build within the cities we live in or what we call Brave Cities. This is an organization co-directed by Hugh Halter which is a consulting firm committed to equip, coach, and connect apostolic leaders who are building kingdom ecosystems as a new way of being church. A Kingdom Ecosystem is another way of describing an interconnected and interdependent network of missionary disciples, who band together to incubate good works in a specific local context. These good works include new businesses, justice works, and incarnationally focused homes that all work together so that a prospering economy and intentional community form. We hope the content and the spirit of Brave Cities will be what you've been needing and looking for and that real hope for you, your family, and your leadership will emerge. Listen to Episode 19 of the podcast and access the show notes below. Future Church Insights: 1. Hugh shares what creates a “Brave City” church plant. Comprised of three essential parts, a Brave City plant is a different type of Church Plant integrates a benevolent business or business design that helps the town and creates jobs to change the atmosphere in the city. The second is incarnational, neighborhood homes which are homes for people that live in certain parts of the neighborhood who seek to better the area and create lasting positive change. The third is justice works which are things that other people are not doing that the town desperately needs done, specifically people that are on the margins or don't have the same access as everyone else. 2. How Brave Cities incubate good works through new businesses. Hugh shares how they utilize their 501c (3) holding company to help people start businesses that strategically change the city. They provide a central administrative and legal covering for them as they seek to get started. However, good works don't have to be Christians with an idea. They can come from non-Christians that have something they want to contribute. 3. The biggest obstacle facing Brave Cities right now. The need to create jobs in this country has gone down over the last few years which unfortunately means job creation isn't a top priority for a lot of businesses right now. With that being said, the most important goal right now for Brave Cities is to move people into the spiritual community who progress from business development to a community of family and friends. It is through this process that people can be discipled as we give witness to the LORD. Goals and Desired Outcomes: They seek to redefine the way you think about the future church and your future as you consider your true passions, dreams, and visions for blessing the cities you live in. Here are the changes they seek to change in churches: The Theology of Church as a City on a Hill Promoting the 6 elements required to build a Kingdom Ecosystem Moving from Pastoral Leadership to Apostolic Leadership How To Create Multiple Buckets of Income for yourself and the Ecosystem God Forms Firing Your Congregation and Framing a New Community Providing a New Template for creating Natural Evangelistic and Prophetic Influence in Your City Promoting Business Not FOR Mission or IN Mission, but AS Mission Brave Cities would like to have 100 cities that are building Kingdom Ecosystems over the next decade. Links www.bravecities.com Quotes from Hugh Halter: “The greatest strategy for giving young people a vision for leading their own friends spiritually to guide and disciple their own friends is to call them into their own homes.” “Businesses are important in this process because it's your financial sustainability and credibility with the city, but the real ministry still has to be individual people that feel confident to guide spiritual conversation, open up the Scriptures, and have talks about life and meaningful things with people...

Birds of a feather flock together, or so says the research. Many studies and our experience show that we pursue people who share are interests and values, and judge those who don't. But what if we are missing out on purposeful friendships by judging the choices and beliefs of others. On this episode Kim is joined by Hugh Halter, pastor and author of Brimstone: The Art and Act of Holy Nonjudgment. Kim Wier is a speaker, radio talk show host, Bible teacher, and author of the book, The Art of Friendship and other titles. The Art of Friendship Podcast is part of Hope On Demand!

Outside the Western world, the Church is experiencing its greatest growth in history by gathering and multiplying small groups of people, numbering 10 or less. Is this the way forward for us too? In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, Caesar talks with author and modern-day apostle, Hugh Halter, about the need to re-envision why and how our church small groups gather together on mission. Now is the time to change! In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why your church small groups are more important than ever. The need to reframe the Gospel for everyone in small groups. Why understanding the community that Jesus formed is key. Tools you can use to move your small group toward missional living. (https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe) (https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe) From this episode: "God’s love for you, your church, and your community does not stop there! He has brought you together as his family so that more and more of his lost children will find freedom in Christ and live life to the full, today, with you. Plus, your own spiritual formation and maturity will never happen in a “holy huddle” that is primarily inward-focused. It's easy to get disconnected right now, especially with your church. That's why we do #FridayWhyDay! We want you to feel connected here. Today, Jon, Tommy, and Dan shared wins from the week, some exciting news about Never The Same, and wrapped up their discussion on the book Flesh by Hugh Halter.
The guys have been reading Flesh by Hugh Halter and today they are tackling the topic of confrontation. Hugh describes confrontation as, "That divine moment where grace leads to truth, and where truth is allowed to confront people with their need for God." Facing confrontation is difficult, but thankfully we have a perfect example in Jesus. He was a friend of sinners and we should be too.
Jon, Tommy and Dan dig into the book Flesh: Bringing the Incarnation Down to Earth by Hugh Halter, and talk about what it really looks like to follow Christ - the 7 days a week, 24 hours a day kind of following Christ. How do we truly “imitate Christ”?
Hugh Halter (Episode #15) Cory and Brian interview Hugh Halter. Hugh & Cheryl Halter began their ministry starting things from scratch in Portland, Oregon. Hugh and Cheryl have done it all from church planting to house painting to starting hockey teams for children with disabilities. Hugh has been one of the primary influencers for the Underground in learning about incarnational living and gospel planting. Currently, Hugh and Cheryl are in Alton, IL where they moved without knowing what they would do, but knew they wanted to bring good news to a small, struggling town. Within a year, they were given a 12,000 square foot federal post office, and with the help of his family turned it into “Post Commons” which the locals call the “living room for Alton.” Under Hugh's non-profit “Lantern Network” Hugh facilitates a coffee house, brunch kitchen, events center, whiskey society, and co-working space to birth and nurture small ventures that make a collectively large ripple. Hugh says his mission is to encourage the church to be less churchy and instead work on creating social, personal, & spiritual ventures that serve our cities in ways that make God smile. The Church Renewal Podcast is a production of Flourish Coaching. Flourish exists to set leaders free to be effective wherever God has called them. When pastors and churches get stuck, Flourish Coaches renew their hope int he gospel and help them gain strategic clarity."But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (ESV)We continue working through our definition of Church Renewal in this episode: Church Renewal is the process by which a person or church body experiences a new awareness of their sin and need for God's grace;their privileges as ambassadors of the kingdom and as sons and daughters of God; a new appreciation for their place as they anticipate the kingdom of God coming and reaching that place; a new prayerfulness and passion to share the good news; holistic discipleship; a new curiosity to know God, the self, and the world; a new awareness to the missionary opportunity around them; a new joy and reverence in worship; a new personal commitment to the means of grace. If your church disappeared would your neighborhood miss you? Churches are renewed when they recover a sense of place, and the sense that Jesus is bringing his kingdom to bear on that place. Join us as we explore the idea of sense of place in church renewal. In this episode, Preston gets to know Hugh Halter, who’s done some innovative “church” plants—if we can even call them that. Preston and Hugh talk about the different kingdom projects that Hugh’s been a part of, especially his most recent project at “post commons”—a missional, kingdom-minded venture that might be the way forward in our post-Christian context. Do modern-day apostles exist? Are there still people that God sends to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom to the lost and broken and start new movements of the gospel where the Kingdom of God touches down here on Earth? This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, Caesar interviews his close friend, author and modern apostle, Hugh Halter. His story of restarting from scratch in a city across the country will encourage you that God is still at work establishing His kingdom. And He may just be waiting for you to join Him! This episode is an overview given to all team members and exploratory groups that visit or serve with GO Ministries. It is an account of the theological center of our Seminary as well as the overall DNA of GO Ministries work on the island of Hispaniola. We are hosting this recording here because this theology is the lens through which the Scriptures are interpretted at our Sunday gathering of the Gringlish Fellowship. Regardless of what form, style, or history of the church you serve in, our present day missionary context removes the option to do more of the same, or just make minor tweaks. The world and those we serve will no longer respond to church in the same form or fashion. What missionary context needs more than any single thing is…Missionaries. People that understand how to cross the street and make meaningful engagement with the lost world around us. Join us for a great learning experience with Hugh Halter who has specialize in missionary training for the local church the last 25 years. Hugh says, “When Jesus called us to make disciples, was essentially giving us the mandate to make church a missionary farm system.” Hugh lives with his wife Cheryl in Alton, IL. After two church plants, Hugh and Cheryl moved from Denver in 2016 where Hugh pioneered the Lantern Network, a new-trappist kingdom and business collective. He has authored eight books and shares his time encouraging and training the greater body of Christ for doable and tangible engagement with the world around us.
Hugh Halter walks through Acts 10, exposing the greatest missionary skill of sharing a meal with friends.
Hugh Halter defines discipleship as learning to live out our humanity the way Jesus lived His; and explains our call to incarnate God’s presence for others.
Hugh Halter explores the grand story of God’s constant missionary movement and His invitation for us to join Him.

Scripture Used: Luke 19:1-10 Acts 2:42-47 Quotes Referenced: "One of the most impressive aspects of Jesus is how he was impressed by unimpressive people." -John Ortberg "Christian community is unique in that it must be based on three primary themes: personal devotion to Jesus, the common call or mission of the Gospel, and the inclusion of all people, especially those who don't fit in." The Tangible Kingdom by Hugh Halter and Matt Smay “As long as we keep running around, anxiously trying to affirm ourselves or be affirmed by others, we remain blind to One who has loved us first, dwells in our heart, and has formed our truest self. But we can also open our eyes. We can see a new way forward." -Turn My Mourning into Dancing by Henri J.M. Nouwen Discussion Questions: -Do you feel open and willing to invest in new friendships? How are you making yourself available to the people around you? -Who is someone that you can notice, someone who you would usually pass by who needs a friend right now? -How the disciples might have described the community they had with Jesus? As you read the scripture about the early church in Acts 2 what things stand out to you as elements of community? -What are practical ways you can be hospitable in this season of your life?

On this episode, Brian and Leann are joined by Hugh Halter. They discuss what it looks like to develop a love for the lost through incarnation, sharing the good news and community.
Hugh says that many people have asked, “Hugh, what is the one key to turning a typical small group into a true missionary community?” Another asks, “Hugh, how did all those people find faith…really how did it actually happen?” Another asks, “How do you disciple people to live more human lives like Jesus?” Hugh’s answer is always the same. “You have to teach and disciple people in how to throw a good party. It’s where everything starts.” It’s where we learn to listen instead of judge. Where we become advocates instead of adversaries and where people cease to be targets or projects because they are our friends. Remember, when teaching about the gospel of the kingdom, our living metaphors are that of a wedding feast, a banquet, and a supper. It’s time to include this in our own spiritual formation. Hugh Halter moved from Denver in 2016 to Alton IL, with his wife Cheryl and three grown children to participate in a brand new missional living adventure which is allowing them to live out the incarnational ministry values they hold deeply. He speaks extensively across the country encouraging and equipping pastors in incarnational ministry and missional leadership. Hope is: taking action today on the basis of what God promises for tomorrow. It’s easier to define than to embrace. Because when we look at the way things are today, our expectations for tomorrow are often pretty low. It’s just being realistic. But hope doesn’t ignore realism. Rather, it struggles to lay against all of our human expectations one great expectation: that the God who promised to bless all people keeps his promise. Abraham set hope against Hope, one expectation against another, his against God’s. That’s why he’s a model of hope for us. He learned to take action with a God who “gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.” (Romans 4:17)
