Fasting 01 - Offering Ourselves to JesusAs powerful as the mind is, because we are holistic beings, we can't simply think our way into spiritual maturity. Our discipleship to Jesus must take seriously our body, as it is “the temple of the Holy Spirit” — a home where we make room for God to dwell. Most of us are used to approaching our spiritual formation and life with God through the door of our mind — by thinking, talking, praying, reading, or hearing teaching and preaching. But very few of us are comfortable approaching our spiritual formation through our stomach, or our body as a whole. In this first teaching David Armstrong looks at how Fasting is one of the best disciplines we have to reintegrate our mind to our body, and offer our whole selves to God in surrender.Part of the Practicing the Way Series. In these verses in Ezekiel he orders for cheribum to be carved with a man's face and a Lion's face, plus palm trees. In these symbols I can see Jesus represented. He was man and is a lion. Palm trees represent the victory we have as Christians over the enemies of our soul. Palm trees were used to adore Jesusas he entered triumphal into Jerusalem in a colt, the people recognized his deity and worship for he is the only that can save us from damnation.

Sermon Outline: Christ drew an international crowd The crowd desired signs and wonders Many confessed Christ was the Son of God Family Discussion Questions: Where did Jesus withdraw to? A great crowd followed Him; where did they come from? Why is this important for us to notice? Why did Jesus need to get into a boat? Why did that crowd gather to Jesus? Why were they there? Why did Jesus withdraw to the sea instead of facing the Pharisees? What are reasons that are used to draw people to Jesus that create a false church? Jesus said that His purpose was not to perform miracles, but to do what things? (Mark 10:45,Mark 1:38) The crowd that came to Jesus would later crucify Him. What does this say about true and falsefaith? Why did Jesus command the demons not to declare Him to be the Messiah? What do we learn about true and false faith from the knowledge that the demons confess Jesusas the Messiah? What does true faith desire most and trust Jesus to do for you? How should the difference between a crowd and a church shape a church?

In this episode of Conversations in Process, Jay sits down with Sufi scholar and musician Ali Hussain to discuss potential points of contact between Islamic mystical theology and process thought. Ali Hussain has a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan, Department of Middle East Studies. His research focuses on the image of Jesus AS in the writings of Muslim polymath Muhyiddin Ibn Al-Arabi and later Muslim scholars. His other research interests include Islam and Sufism in America, art and creativity in Islam and the creative engagement that Sufi mystics have with Arabic through the mediation of the Quran. He has published a number of books and articles, including “The Art of Ibn Arabi,” “The Metaphysics of Creativity: From the Qur'an into Ibn al-'Arabi,” “Ibn Al-Arabi and Joseph Campbell: The Metaphysics of Creativity and Mythology of Contemporary Art,” and most recently “A Nostalgic Remembrance: Sufism and the Breath of Creativity.” In this conversation, Jay and Ali explore the similarities and contrasts between the Sufism of Ibn ‘Arabi and Whitehead's cosmological and theological perspectives. They discuss issues of immanence and transcendence, negative theology, the problem of evil, and much more. Ali shares the intellectual roots of Islamic mysticism, which draws in part from the same Platonic traditions in which Whitehead himself finds inspiration. Jay discusses common process perspectives on the vulnerability of God and the openness of the future, which Ali thinks can fit into a Sufi perspective as well when considered in relation to particular Divine Names. In closing, they discuss the centrality of beauty in both Sufi traditions and Whitehead's philosophy, connecting the ideas of harmony and intensity with Divine Mercy and an open future. 367 It is Finished, Good Friday   It Is Finished, The last words Jesus spoke on Good Friday as he died on the cross to save Humanity.   Greetings all my friends and today I am doing something a little bit different on the Dharmic Evolution Podcast I wanted to present a project that I worked on more than 5 years ago on Music Row in Nashville. The band is called “Mercy” and the project was the “I AM VICTORIOUS” Album.   Its ultimate purpose is to become a theatrical musical experience, similar to West Side Story, or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in that it's design is to include the audience as part of the presentation. However, at the time of putting the music together, we had no idea this was part of the plan.   My writing partner Archbishop and Captain Chaplain Christine Mercy Johnson and I wrote and Produced this album with Kim Copeland as Music Producer on Music Row in the late Spring and Summer of 2016.    I wanted to share 4 of the tracks with you today to give you a glimpse of the story and how important It is for us to remember what actually happened during those last days of the Lord that set up our Eternal spiritual possibilities for all time moving forward, I hope you will listen, and enjoy the story, And realize its importance on your life!   AMEN The Lord wanted us to write a song entitled “Amen” that is all we got, just “Amen” I walked around In circles in my small humble studio in this tiny cottage I was renting  at the time, it had a loft and fireplace  it was perfect actually, I really lived in a small recording studio, on an 80 acre estate surrounded by nature. After being exasperated At the lack of direction, I turned on my DX7, plugged in a couple of guitars, and set up the metronome, and    Just started tracking, the rest just came out, pretty much the same as you hear on the recording. The one Icing on the cake was that Christine had told me the Lord wanted her to do a voice over on top of the  Recording, and it turns out The Lords Prayer fit into the space perfectly, we had not planned on this And I had no idea that was going to be part of the song, but it fit like a glove.   The intro of this song starts with Christine reciting scripture from Revalations 22, its a moving and stirring Message, filled with dire warnings, but also with the promise of beautiful, revealing, and everlasting Light for us all, if only we dare to have the courage to claim it. As the scripture concludes, it moves Quietly into the song.   The intro is real birds that I captured at the cottage, I woke up pre dawn one morning and put two hi quality Microphones out of my windows to capture the early morning song birds, then later that day I went for A hike in one of my favorite forests and brought with me a tiny hi quality recorder, my trusty Boss Digital Micro BR recorder. (I still use it today, its smaller than a peanut butter sandwich) I set it on a rock in the Middle of a stream to capture the real water sounds for the recording, and added them into the mix.   I always thought of the piece as more of a prayer than a song, it is designed for you to put on in your Car, on the way to a stressful meeting, or uncomfortable situation, and is meant to help you find Peace through the prayer that you are communicating to the Father, Lord Jesus, and the  Holy Spirit. Amen~   Bless You This was a beautiful story about Jesus imparting to his disciples how to conduct themselves out in the World and how they can make an impact on society and care for their impoverished brothers and sisters. He spoke in parables not to be overly mysterious, however, he would alway try to trigger our creative minds using storytelling, and touching our imaginations in ways that would inspire thinking in new and prosperous way towards the good of humanity.   This showcases what faith and hope really are when these men just left their previous life in a Moments notice. They intuitively knew that they were witnessing something so unusual and so Brilliant, and must have thought “how could we miss this”?   I think the rolling piano riff in this song really glued the arrangement together. That is Nashvilles own Buddy Hyatt,  with brother Jim Hyatt on Bass guitar.  Shawn Fichter (from Tim McGraw's band) is on drums and percussion,  James Mitchell on electric guitars,  Glen Duncan on Acoustic Guitars and violin.  Kim Copeland did a fabulous job producing along with Kelly Schoenfeld handling all Of the highly skilled and challenging engineering, as this was no easy feat to incorporate spoken Scripture with music.   I'M AFRAID I'm afraid records the last night that the Lord Jesus has of earthy freedom before the soldiers come To take him away. How torture with the whipping was just brutal, they beat him and scourged him For hours on end before forcing him to carry his own heavy wooden cross up to Calvary where he Was to be crucified.    The main beam of the cross was stretched across his shoulders and weighed 80-100 Lbs, he had To carry this more than 600 yards uphill, he was beaten so badly and lost so much blood and bodily fluids, it has been said he barely looked human. I think it was astonishing that he even  survived the brutal beatings to get to the crucifixion.   As Jesus was in the Garden of gethsemane praying to his father, he had asked his disciples to stay Awake and keep watch while he prayed to his Father. These last hours were so terrifying for him that he began sweating blood as he could see the horrible and brutal torture he would be suffering over the next 24 hours. He returned to them several times to find them all asleep, which must have been even more exasperating for him.    He was so terrified that he asked his Father, “If it be possible please take this cup from my Hand, but I serve your command, although I'm Afraid”   Everyone played so well on this track and the featured violin playing by Glen Duncan was really Sweet and special. Shawn also added so many elements of drama with the swelling symbol  Effects as well.     IT IS FINISHED Captures the last moments of Jesus speaking to his Father as he is about to die a brutal Painful physical human death. The hours that led up to this had Jesus in court with Pontious Pilate, the Roman Governor of the province of Judea. Pilate knew this was a very highly  Charged political situation and even his wife was trying to influence him not to punish Jesus As she had dreams that he was indeed the messiah.   The Jews hated the fact that Jesus was being called the Son of God, and wanted know part Of it, they were screaming “Crucify him” in the town square where Pilate was presenting them A choice to free one prisoner as is customary before passover, he asked “do you want me to Free Barabas, or Jesus”?    We were having a bit of trouble with this one, as Christine suddenly said after tracking that it Was not sad enough, James Mitchell suggested to me to change up to a minor 6th and that Was exactly what it needed to give it that sad temperament in all the right places.  I remember writing this on my Strat and using a capo up around fret 4 or 5, just really Tore into it without any though whatsoever.   Its amazing how all the musicians picked up on the dynamics of the song just from that One very sparse and simple demo. Its another song completely run by the Holy Spirit,  All we needed to do was hang on and enjoy the ride!   After the vocal on this, I could not even come into the control room for a minute or two, It was almost an out of body experience.   Be blessed, and Happy Good Friday,   James~

The congregation will sing And the children will bring The pleasure of their smile, Leading us through our miles. May we all be that child Whose heart is so mild, That we will sing and dance When given the chance. Yes, the children will teach us To be happy with Jesus As we sing and pray Each and every day. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14 ESV) 11/27/2022,. Tim CarterDiscussion:The church I attend has chairs instead of pews and the music is mostly songs writtenmore recently than the hymns Dave and I were raised singing. I have seen some of the younger children dancing as the songs are sung. They have big smiles on their faces and some times the mothers join them. After seeing this, the dancing and the smiles on the girls and mothers faces I was moved to write the poem. I never thought this was inappropriate, but I realized that Sunday the children were dancing for God, for Jesus, and as they grow older that joy of dancing will follow them in their faith and the joy of celebrating the birth of God's Son, our Savior, Jesus. I then knew that they were experiencing worship more deeply than I did as a child when I had a coloring book and crayons, and sat on the kneeler with my coloring book on the pew. I was, for the most part, unaware of my surroundings. So, yes, let the children dance to God, to Jesus as we sing our songs of worship.I made a card with the poem to give to the mother's of 2 of the girls. My 7 year old granddaughter, Aria, drew the picture. The next poem is from God's Rhyme, page 134. "Practicing the Way of Jesus" As we come to a close of practicing Sabbath, we focus today on Worship. Pastor Mark reminds us how important it is to find rest in the Lord through our worship. Many times we may get 'spiritually constipated' with the word of God, but no, releasing of what was given to us. Worship gives us that opportunity to give back to God, and to honor Him for His goodness. —— See what God can do through you. Be a part of our New Hope Kailua family, whether in-person or online! Who really is Jesus- Why is He doing all the things that Mark has recorded here in his Gospel- He is the Son of God, and He is plundering the kingdom of Satan- --Jesus' fame is spreading like widlfire. The crowds know that He can heal physical ailments and they crowd in around Him, almost crushing Him. But He did not want the cast-out demons drawing attention to the fact that He was the Son of God because that would have short-circuited the Lord's plan and let everyone know that He was the Messiah - thereby launching their expectiations of a political deliverer from Roman rule. The next time Mark uses the phrase, -Son of God,- he records it from the lips of the Roman centurion at the cross. --Jesus called His twelve disciples and gave them a message to deliver as the heralds of the Lord, as well as power to cast out demons and heal people. Again, He was showing His authority as the Son of God. --But not everyone was a fan of what Jesus was doing. His own family members thought He was out of His mind, and the scribes thought He was in league with the devil. To counteract this, Jesus gave three parables that show how foolish it is to imagine that Satan could be fighting himself. You can't plunder a strong man until you've tied him up. Far from being in partnership with Satan, Jesus came to defeat him and plunder his kingdom- As He calls, saves, and redeems people's souls, He is snatching away the riches that the devil has had in his possession wrongfully. --Are you one of Jesus' family members- How do you view Jesus- As a crazy man- As being in league with Satan- Or as the King Who has come to plunder Satan and pluck you - one of His rich jewels - out of the devil's hands-

Evangelical Church has created a tradition of worshipping the Anti-Christ.  Antichrist is those who reject Jesus AS the Messiah. "666" as corporate man, and the need for the church to flee Babylon and the Great Whore.  The Fake Jesus being preached; Pastors take the name of the Lord in vain a blaspheme. The real Jesus Christ — the Alpha and Omega, the source and origin of all things. My problem is that I don't obey the antichrist.

Cultivate Connection - Christ Centred Meditation

Your Faith Has Made You WellThe Miracles of JesusAs we read this week's scripture, meditate on how Jesus is showing you the character of who He is through this story. And Jesus went with him; and a large crowd followed Him and pressed in around Him [from all sides].A woman [in the crowd] had [suffered from] a hemorrhage for twelve years, and had endured much [suffering] at the hands of many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but instead had become worse. She had heard [reports] about Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His outer robe. For she thought, “If I just touch His clothing, I will get well.” Immediately her flow of blood was dried up; and she felt in her body [and knew without any doubt] that she was healed of her suffering. Immediately Jesus, recognizing in Himself that power had gone out from Him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched My clothes?” His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in around You [from all sides], and You ask, ‘Who touched Me?'” Still He kept looking around to see the woman who had done it. And the woman, though she was afraid and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. Then He said to her, “Daughter, your faith [your personal trust and confidence in Me] has restored you to health; go in peace and be [permanently] healed from your suffering.” - Mark 5:24-34 AMPWe also read accounts of this story from Luke 8:43-48 NLT and Matthew 9:20-22 NASBIs there an area in your life where you're suffering? Where do you need to reach out to God? And where is He reaching out to you?If you are suffering in your body, we pray for healing in it. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

John 20:1-18   There is so much chaos in today's scripture passage. We don't like chaos. We like our scripture to be neat, straightforward and tidy Just how we like our schedules and our plans for the next great thing Just how we like ourselves, smart and on top of things Just how we like God, predictable and in control       /   But on this Easter morning, in the story of Jesus' resurrection Our likes are challenged as we're thrown into chaos and unknowing We zoom in on Mary Magdalene and enter the messiness of her reality Friday she witnessed the horror of the crucifixion of her friend, her teacher Her beloved He was cruelly crucified and discarded Saturday she honored the Sabbath as best she could Perhaps out of a chaotic mixture of obligation, fear, devotion and desperation And this morning, while it is still dark, she leaves her home for Jesus' tomb. Mary Magdalene, from whom seven demons Jesus cast out Mary Magdalene, Jesus closest companion Mary Magdalene, who's been up all night with blood-shot eyes and tear-soaked bed sheets She's like us, wanting to create order in the midst of chaos She's like us, preferring to control situations She has been waiting to DO something about this mess So, she plows through her grief-laden, exhausted, and fearful fog And goes to the tomb Alone In the dark An act of resistance with great risk, To anoint Jesus' body.  /                  /   When she arrives she sees that things aren't as she expected The stone is rolled away So she runs to get some others - and they run to see... out-running each other All this running adds to the chaos of this early Sunday morning They run full-out and find the tomb empty With the burial cloths left behind We glimpse the perspective of "the other disciple" - who wasn't even named here He had faith, he believed - and went back home with Peter His perspective would offer a much neater and tidier ending The other disciple demonstrates the predictability we prefer But the story plunges us back into chaos with the perspective of Mary Magdalene Who stayed                 and wept   She didn't find faith in the empty tomb  - she only found tears When I think about Mary Magdalene, I wonder about the seven demons that Jesus cast out of her. I wonder if they were like the demons we struggle with today? The demons that hang out inside our minds and our culture Demons like unworthiness, Maybe shame Fear Maybe a bit of self-justification, Control Or the longing for power                  I wonder if these demons were gone forever Or if maybe, like with us, they crept back into Mary's mind when she was not at her best I wonder if Mary believed that she was healed Or if she gave all the credit to her incredible teacher and friend, Jesus As she clung to him. She followed him around, learning all she could, hanging onto his every word Because he made her better I wonder about these demons because we all struggle with demons And, like faith, healing isn't straightforward, neat or tidy So this morning we zoom in on Mary Magdalene in the midst of this chaos and she seems stuck /                /         entombed   Entombed in her disbelief Entombed in her grief Entombed in her hopelessness Entombed in the old, well-worn paths of those seven demons It doesn't seem like she believed that Jesus is God, Who conquers all things, including death As she sat and wept     /         /   She knew Jesus best, She was one of his closest companions And yet here she sits, crying and entombed in her old thinking /           / The chaos continues as Mary turns around and sees a man, maybe the gardener She doesn't recognize him He asks her - why are you crying?  Who are you looking for? Then Mary challenges him, In spite of her tear soaked cheeks she finds a bit of courage and says "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." Mary wants Jesus back.   Mary is willing to do whatever it takes to be near him, to touch him one more time To cling to him This situation is so chaotic and she's grasping for anything to regain some control With Jesus things weren't so chaotic With Jesus her demons couldn't take up much space inside her head With Jesus it seemed she was on top of things With Jesus Mary didn't have to believe because the schedule was packed and they were on to the next great thing "Mary!"  He calls her name "Mary!" She turns and says "Teacher!" You can imagine the mixture of emotions in her voice It's him! The chaos continues to swirl in this moment twisting tears, grief, joy, laughter, confusion and recognition into this single word Teacher! Mary longs to hold onto Jesus… yet Jesus tells her "Do not hold on to me...but go"   But go   Jesus knows the society and culture Mary lives in, with its domination and oppression Jesus knows the risk he's asking Mary to take, as a woman Jesus knows Mary's past and present, all the things that hold her back And he tells her to Go   Her healing is not about the person of Jesus whose every word she clung to and every act she observed It's about the One to whom Jesus pointed It's about the One Jesus reflected It's about the One Jesus embodied   It's about God, Jesus the Christ, the Holy Spirit within which all things are possible And in this moment, I think Mary Magdalene was truly healed of her seven demons Because before she didn't believe she was whole She gave all that credit to her amazing teacher, Jesus But now Jesus tells her not to cling to him /     /     Friends, we are Mary /         /   We become entombed in our old thinking We cling to ideas and people - things we think make us better Things like power and control Things like dependence and the limitations of the way things are Our demons continue to race around inside our minds As we hurry on to the next great thing Today, we are Mary   We doubt that God heals us We doubt that God frees us and raises US We doubt that God calls us We doubt that God sends us            On this Easter morning God is calling us into wholeness God's love and grace and fullness are all ready with us, all ready given to us, God has conquered our demons so they no longer define who we are This is what it means to be Christian The embodied church in the world Easter people!               So what are you clinging to?  It's time to let go This morning God is sending you out, in all of your beloved wholeness "But go!"    /                  /   Today Mary Magdalene believed And she went, and risked and she proclaimed In freedom, wholeness and authority given to her by God She became the disciple to the disciples "I have seen the Lord" Happy Easter

Vineyard Church of New Orleans Podcast (Messages)

Sacred Space at Home Week 6 (August 19th) Welcome: Welcome to Sacred Space at Home, a resource from Vineyard Church of New Orleans! We’re so glad you have decided to join us in this time of worship and reflection. Today we will meditate on Acts Chapters 6 & 7. Wherever you may find yourself in this moment, try and make space to listen and experience the presence of God as we pray, hear the words of scripture, and sing together. As we begin, we open our minds and hearts and say, “Come, Holy Spirit.” Song of Awareness Teach Me To Die by Ethan Asters Teach me to die That I may live Help me to trust And freely give All of my life That all may be one United in Christ In service to love The ladder of power The seeking of fame The building of wealth Will never sustain So help me renounce The things I hold dear To die to myself And trust you are near The wielding of power The culture of fame The storing of wealth Will only decay So here I renounce The objects of vain To die to myself And follow Christ’s way Scripture Reading (Acts 6:8, 12 / 7:44-60 NLT) “A reading from the Book of Acts…” 8 Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people. 12 This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council. 44 “Our ancestors carried the Tabernacle[i] with them through the wilderness. It was constructed according to the plan God had shown to Moses… 46 “David found favor with God and asked for the privilege of building a permanent Temple for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who actually built it.48 However, the Most High doesn’t live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says, 49 ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that?’ asks the Lord. ‘Could you build me such a resting place? 50 Didn’t my hands make both heaven and earth?’[k] 51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you! 52 Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One—the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered. 53 You deliberately disobeyed God’s law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.” 54 The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen’s accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.[m]55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 56 And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!” 57 Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him 58 and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.[n] 59 As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died. Questions As you hear this passage, what comes to mind? Can you think of a time when your experience of God resulted in tension or conflict with others? Jesus invites his followers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow him. What might it look like for you to deny yourself and say “yes” to the invitation of Jesus? As a follower of Jesus, taking up your cross can lead to resistance, rejection, isolation, or misunderstanding. How might the Spirit be present with you as you navigate this reality today? As you reflect on God’s presence with you in this moment, what may be keeping you from following Jesus more fully? Take this time and ask God to give you the courage to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus today. Teach Me To Die (Reprise) Benediction “As we conclude our time together, may you continue to be aware of the presence of God and seek to find sacred spaces throughout the day.” Let us pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.”

Sacred Space at Home Week 5 (August 12th) Welcome: Welcome to Sacred Space at Home, a resource from Vineyard Church of New Orleans! We’re so glad you have decided to join us in this time of worship and reflection. Today we will meditate on Acts Chapter 5. Wherever you may find yourself in this moment, try and make space to listen and experience the presence of God as we pray, hear the words of scripture, and sing together. As we begin, we open our minds and hearts and say, “Come, Holy Spirit.” Song of Awareness Come and Tear Down the Walls by Jenny Wahlstrom & Mark Alan Schoolmeesters Come and tear down the walls I’ve built up Every wall I’ve built up Every wall I’ve built up Cause you deserve every piece of my heart Every piece of my heart Every piece of my heart Lord, I am trusting that you are a faithful father And all that you have it is good You’re a generous giver Your love’s like no other Won’t you come and break through to me Over and over and over again I am bringing my heart to you with open hands Closer and closer you’re drawing me in As the depths of my heart lay before you again Scripture Reading (Acts 5:25-32 NIV) “A reading from the Book of Acts…” 25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. 27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Reflection At the instruction of the Holy Spirit, the apostles began speaking of all they had seen, and teaching this Good News throughout the world – that Jesus is Lord! But the religious leaders did not approve. This gospel threatened their own power and authority, so they arrested the apostles and ordered them to stop speaking about Jesus. The apostles were faced with a choice: should they give in to the pressures of the religious leaders, or should they risk everything and obey God who had given them this new life & purpose? The apostles’ response was clear: their allegiance was to God. In many ways, this new Life would cost them greatly. But the apostles had been witnesses of God’s power! They had received forgiveness through Jesus! They had experienced firsthand the gift of the Holy Spirit – God’s own presence within them! This was a far greater reward, a treasure worthy of any price or sacrifice. And so, guided by the Holy Spirit, they offered up everything – time, money, possessions, politics & social norms, expectations & traditions. They became a people no longer guided by popular opinion or self-interest, but completely surrendered to the Holy Spirit. May it be so for us today, for the sake of the gospel and the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ! Questions 1. The Holy Spirit empowers us not only to believe the gospel, but to be transformed by it. How might the Spirit be inviting you to be transformed in this moment? 2. What aspects of your life most challenge or compete with your allegiance to Jesus? As you reflect, ask the Spirit to give you wisdom to walk in new life today. 3. What might it look like to surrender your whole self-everything you have and all that you are—to God? Take this time to ask the Spirit to work in and through you as you go about the rest of your day. Come Tear Down the Walls (Reprise) Benediction “As we conclude our time together, may you continue to be aware of the presence of God and seek to find sacred spaces throughout the day.” Let us pray. Amen.”

This week, Pastor Luke led us into the start of a new series called Revival: Reform to Transform. The heart of this series is the prayer of Saint Augustine “Revive thy church, Oh Lord, beginning in me.” The title of his sermon was ‘Preparing the Way of the Lord' and took us through the life of John the Baptizer. Pastor Luke's three main points were: You need to exchange your vision for God's calling Start with your heart Receive the grace and power of Jesus As followers of Jesus we need to exchange our cultural values with kingdom values, submit our vision for life under God's call for our lives (to prepare the way of the Lord and make disciples) and live out our faith as the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Our lives are not about going to heaven one day but bringing heaven down today. It's not about getting into heaven, but about getting heaven into you. We need to live lives of repentance (recognizing, confessing and turning from our sin) lived out in community and discipleship. We need people in our lives who can call out our sin and baggage. Pastor Luke concluded by offering two cautions: we have to bear fruit in keeping with repentance without becoming religious, or irreligious. We must rely fully on God and not allow our freedom in Christ to become freedom from Christ.
