“Thought is a beautiful power that arises in Awareness. If that power is worshipped or if it is hated, then it grows into a tyranny.  You are Awareness, not the thought of Awareness, but the reality of Awareness.” When we identify with the thoughts and feelings arising in our mind and body, we overlook our true face—awareness itself. Habitually following thoughts with more thoughts is the root of unnecessary suffering. In this monologue, Gangaji shares how it is possible to effortlessly discover that who you are in reality, is free and unthought. Learn more about Gangaji, her schedule, and programs at gangaji.org

What's the difference between education and indoctrination? Is our education system broken, or is it operating as intended? The public school conveyor belt is a relic of the Prussian military model, designed to produce compliant workers for factories rather than sovereign thinkers with upward mobility. We're left with a blindly obedient population that's smart enough to follow orders, but not smart or courageous enough to question the status quo.   The masses are conditioned to become habitually compliant conformists forever reliant on external authority. As Seth Godin writes, “To efficiently run a school, amplify fear (and destroy passion).” These days, educators have limited intellectual freedom to teach what they want to teach.  In past decades, we had far less access to information or schooling, yet were far more educated. Now in the age of AI, we have access to unlimited information, but we don't know if any of it is real or true.  So what is the future of education? Our guest today is Matt Beaudreau, a former public school educator and administrator who has dedicated his career to rethinking the very foundations of our education system. Matt shares: “When I saw this system for what it was, I could no longer be a part of perpetuating it.” As founder of the Apogee Strong mentorship program, Matt has an unwavering commitment to empowering young people to become sovereign, self-directed learners - a radical departure from the compliance-driven model that dominates our schools. True education should foster creativity and critical thinking, allowing individuals to pursue their unique passions. Matt's belief, which I share, is that genius is common, and true learning is about unlocking the innate genius in every one of us. In this episode, you'll discover: How to unshackle your mind from the limits of traditional schooling and cultural conditioning  Why modern education systems are anti-entrepreneurial and train students to be employees rather than innovators How to utilize passion as a vehicle to learn how to learn How to cultivate courage, foster civil discourse and intellectual flexibility to counter the polarization and echo chambers in today's society The status games played by elite institutions And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/matt-beaudreau-how-to-nurture-genius-and-courage-in-a-habitually-compliant-population/  Go to https://apogeestrong.com/ to enroll, watch the Documentary, and get more from Matt Beaudreau and the Apogee Strong team Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH   Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman   Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman   Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames   Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus  Brought to you by: LMNT Electrolytes from DrinkLMNT.com - Collect your FREE 8-Pack of Electrolytes with any purchase: DrinkLMNT.com/Wild  DS-01™ Probiotics and Prebiotics from Seed.com - Save 25% off your first month with promo code 25WILD

At this point, both the school and district have tried and failed to improve a students' attendance. Parents of habitually truant students risk criminal charges under a 2010 law championed by Kamala Harris, then the San Francisco District Attorney. But most prosecutors, like Schoen, are not interested in getting a conviction and punishing parents. Instead, Schoen said, they want to find out why a student is missing school and what kind of support or government services might actually help improve their attendance. But the term "old sin nature" is never used in a coextensive manner with our new life in Christ. The old sin nature is the old anthropology when we were dead in trespasses and sins! In Episode 219, Mark & Steve get super passionate in addressing a heart-felt, yet tragic submission from a PBSE listener. Here's what he had to say—Hi, I would love it if you guys could do a podcast around the effects of years of lies and trickle truths on a full disclosure? I've been a PA for 18 years roughly and i've had a hard time coming to terms with my addiction and its consequences. My partner and i have been together 4 years and she found out 1.5 years ago that I was being unfaithful through my excessive pornography and social media consumption. I have always had a hard time running away from conflict and I have a history of communication trauma and sexual assault in childhood. I done everything wrong with my partner, I lied and lied time and time again, I minimized and justified my actions where I felt I could and for most of my "recovery" I just found sneakier ways to access pornography and just flat out refused to be accountable for the hurt it would cause my partner in these moments. I don't think my addict brain could fathom accountability at these low points.  I allowed my partner to dig through every site/app/device and find just troves of visits to profiles and video history, bank transactions. This happened hundred of times over the year and with each new item discovered my partners pain Increased. I had every opportunity to be upfront and honest to my best friend and partner but I was reluctant to let go of that fear. Its like my addicted brain was convinced its easier to sprinkle dust onto her than to drop a ton of bricks but thats just not true at all. Unfortunately i have realized a lot of things too late for my partner at this point and we have just recently moved into a state of in house separation. We both have CSAT therapists but are in very early days of this and still have a long way to go. My reason for reaching out is due to the fact that my entire life at this point (our relationship/my dog / my home/my job) relies on openness and full disclosure. Is there any hope that I can ever navigate around the fact that i allowed my partner to be the detective and she uncovered at least 95% of what I've done with a measly 5% being my efforts. We have spoken for a year and a half about aspects of my addiction and I struggle to dig deep and expand on my occasions of acting out. This coupled with lack of honesty just breeds an environment for my partner to rightfully wonder, "What the hell do I not know? " I'm sorry if this seems a bit all over the place , but I've tried to express my situation the best I can. I appreciate the work that you guys and everyone involved do to make this available for people.-   Why do habitual lying and addiction nearly always go together? Why do addicts fear telling the whole truth and being "seen" in their totality?-  When a relationship account is SEVERELY overdrawn and operating from a deep deficit, is their any hope for reconciliation?-  Why is acceptance of, accountability for, and consistent verbal acknowledgment and validation of the pain the addict has caused, CRITICAL for both him and his partner?-  How can the addict use the "language of safety" and the ACTIONS that follow it to show true empathy, real amends and lasting change?-  Proactive, DAILY transparency, not just around sobriety, is essential!-  Why the addict must PRACTICE daily vulnerability, not only in his marriage, but in all his relationships. -  What place does "Formal Disclosure" have in this process?   Learn more about Mark and Steve's revolutionary online porn/sexual addiction recovery and betrayal trauma healing program—"Dare to Connect!" Ego: The Stoic Perspective (Part 2)

Practical Stoicism

In this episode, I continue the discussion on ego, incorporating insights from my listeners and sharing my own reflections. After welcoming new patron Richard Herring, I note the podcast's expansion onto YouTube and the distinct approach I'm taking there. I dive into various listener perspectives on ego, ranging from its necessity in self-identity and decision-making to its potential dangers when overinflated. These comments highlight the complexity of ego, suggesting it's neither wholly good nor bad but rather a tool that needs careful management. From a Stoic perspective, I agree that ego is essential, especially in the context of recognizing our autonomy and ability to make choices. However, the challenge lies in balancing this self-awareness without letting ego distort our perception of reality or our capabilities. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, I discuss the ego as the part of our personality that interacts with the external world, highlighting its role in our perception and decision-making processes. This understanding underscores the Stoic view that ego, while necessary, should not be allowed to dominate or misguide us. I then explore the balance between having enough ego to believe in our abilities and avoiding the delusion of overestimating our capabilities. Utilitarian considerations, while not strictly Stoic, play a role in our decision-making, especially in situations where our actions can have significant consequences. Finally, I offer three pieces of advice for keeping the ego in check: 1 - Regularly adopting the cosmic viewpoint to gain perspective on our insignificance in the universe. 2 - Habitually engaging with others to shift focus away from oneself. 3 - Volunteering regularly to maintain a healthy balance between self-concern and service to others. The episode concludes with a reminder to participate in the Spotify question for the upcoming episode, where we'll delve deeper into the concept of ego with a subject matter expert. -- Become a patron of this podcast : https://stoicismpod.com/members Learn more about your ad choices. Anthony Swann is probably the kindest, gentlest person I have ever met, especially relative to his childhood. Taken from his mother for his own safety, he landed in the foster care system. When he was feeling that the world had turned its back on him, and that violence, fear, and abuse awaited him at every corner, his teacher reached out to him to assure him that he would be okay. In 2021, he was named Virginia Teacher of the Year. But he is still healing from his trauma. Like me, he has had a difficult relationship with his father. Though our struggles are very different, his spirit and wisdom help me as I work toward healing.

I first discovered the work of Gwendolyn Oxenham when one of my middle school soccer players told me of a film screening he had attended the night before. The film was called Pelada, and "it's about soccer," was the only synopsis he offered (6th graders, waddaya gonna do?). I decided to check it out, purchased it on iTunes, and it changed my life. Two division-1 soccer players, having finished their playing careers, found themselves directionless. In their words, "the pro leagues weren't calling, and we weren't in the national team pool,' explained my guest, Gwendolyn Oxenham. So she and her partner Luke decided to travel the world in search of the heart of soccer: the pickup game. Underneath all the money, all the contentiousness, the drive, the manicured fields, the billion dollar industry, is people with a ball at their feet. As she decolonized her relationship with soccer, she returned to her elemental self: the humans and the stories. Since the publication of her first book, Finding the Game and the film it was based on, Pelada, Gwen has continued the two things that ignite her passion: writing and soccer. She Published her second book, Under the Lights and in the Dark: Untold Stories of Women's Soccer, and it gained such acclaim that it was produced into the podcast series Hustle Rule, in which the stories were narrated by Hannah Waddingham, star of Ted Lasso Anyone who reads Gwen's work will find their assumptions and beliefs about sports in general and soccer in particular disrupted. In the summer of 2020, as COVID-19 tore through communities, and law enforcement faced a racial reckoning, Minnesota named it's 2020-21 state teacher of the year. In the state that saw the killings of George Floyd and Philando Castile by law enforcement, Qorsho's recognition as the first Somali-American to be named teacher of the year remains significant. But what never stopped was the racist, misogynist and Islamophobic harassment that she faced regularly. Nevertheless, Qorsho continued to work hard for her students and community, advocating with them and for them. Until she could not go on. Qorsho was my first friend in our state teachers of the year cohort of 2021. And continues to be a source of strength, humor, and motivation to me. The Agents of Recovery Podcast

In this week's episode, the Agents of Recovery talk about what sobriety is and if the word or definition should be changed as the many avenues of recovery are being developed. As it stands,  Sobriety (noun) – 1. The state or quality of being sober 2. Temperance or moderation, especially in the use of alcoholic beverages 3. Seriousness or solemnity.  Sober (adj) – 1. Not intoxicated or drunk, 2. Habitually temperate, especially in the use of alcohol. It's an interesting take, and If you are a member of sober communities, chances are you joined because you recognize that there is or might be a problem with alcohol or substances in your life. If you are on the path to sobriety, the end goal will be total abstention. Yet, they are so many variables we would love to get your input as well.

Guided by the credo "fear has armor, love has none," Willie supported students, especially LGBTQIA+ students, in being themselves and building a deeper understanding of their identities. A cancer diagnosis can profoundly disrupt and destroy a person's sense of self and purpose. While I have not experienced this, many have, and categorically the trauma and fear others have shared seems unreal and life-altering, even (especially) after recovery. Lauren Cantell does not view herself as a representative of cancer struggle or survival. She believes that systemic oppression, especially racism and misogyny, play out in the American healthcare system. She feels rage at the fact that BIPOC womxn are the least likely to be treated with humanity or respect in this system. She also knows that her journey from diagnosis to recovery is her own, and that it is not the only way that recovery may occur. Lauren came to realize that much of her recovery was driven by her fear of burdening others, or protecting those around her from her own illness and uncertainty. And while she is quick to explain that her friends and loved ones did not expect her to do this, she also realizes that there is a way that our society talks about life-threatening illness that often is not inclusive of individual experiences and perspectives. Lauren talks about her cancer diagnosis as a Kindergarten teacher, and how it drove her to write a crown-funded feature film which explores her experiences. She shares her ambivalence about her own experience, and hopes to encourage others to share their stories, even if they are difficult, even if they do not have a happy ending.
