This is the Catch Up on 3 things by The Indian Express and I am Ichha SharmaToday is the 9th of May and here are this week's headlineIn a decisive military action, India launched "Operation Sindoor" in the early hours of Wednesday, executing precision strikes on nine terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This operation was a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. During a press briefing in New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh detailed the operation's objectives and outcomes. They confirmed the destruction of camps associated with notorious terrorists Ajmal Kasab and David Headley. The strikes were meticulously planned to avoid civilian casualties, utilizing advanced weaponry and precision-guided munitions. Targets were carefully selected to dismantle terrorist infrastructure while sparing Pakistani military installations, underscoring India's intent to avoid escalation.A day after India struck Pakistan terror camps, during a special briefing on Operation Sindoor the government said today that the “Pahalgam attack was the first escalation,”. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh addressed the media again on a day India neutralised an air defence system in Lahore. This comes on a day of fast-paced developments after India asked OTT platforms, media streaming platforms and intermediaries operating in India to discontinue the web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming media content originating from Pakistan. Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned that those trying to test India's patience should be ready to face ‘quality action' like yesterday's in a reference to Operation Sindoor. The day started with India's reveal that Indian Armed Forces neutralised an air defence system in Lahore after Pakistan attempted overnight strikes on multiple Indian cities.India conducted a nationwide civil defence exercise, codenamed 'Operation Abhyas,' across 244 districts. This large-scale mock drill, organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs and coordinated by the National Disaster Management Authority, aimed to bolster emergency preparedness amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. The drills simulated various hostile scenarios, including air raids with siren activations, blackout procedures, urban fire emergencies, search and rescue operations, casualty evacuations, and the establishment of temporary hospitals. Major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Pune participated, with specific activities like a 10-minute blackout observed in Haryana and siren activations in Delhi's 11 districts. The Supreme Court warned Indraprastha Apollo Hospital on March 25 that AIIMS may take over its management if it continues to violate land lease terms requiring free treatment for poor patients. Over 12 years, Apollo reportedly allocated only 17% of its mandated Economically Weaker Section (EWS) beds, with some years as low as 12%. The court's rebuke follows a review of internal records revealing chronic underperformance. The hospital was granted land at concessional rates with the condition of providing EWS care, a commitment it now risks losing if non-compliance continues.India and the United Kingdom inked a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on Tuesday (May 6), bringing to an end around three years of negotiations. The timing of the deal, signed by the world's fifth and sixth largest economies, respectively, is significant. It comes as global trade is reeling under the tariffs unleashed by US President Donald Trump in early April. The agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion a year, from 2040 onwards, Britain said. Trade between the two nations totalled £42.6 billion in 2024. Total UK exports to India amounted to £17.1 billion, while total UK imports from India amounted to £25.5 billion in 2024. India was Britain's 11th-largest trading partner last year. Britain said the deal was the “biggest and most economically significant” bilateral trade agreement it had signed since leaving the European Union in 2020 (what was dubbed “Brexit”).

The day started with India's reveal that Indian Armed Forces neutralised an air defence system in Lahore after Pakistan attempted overnight strikes on multiple Indian cities.India said today that an “Air Defence system at Lahore” is “reliably learnt” to have been “neutralised” after Pakistan “attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India”. “Today morning Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,” a Press Information Bureau statement read. Earlier in the day, sources had told The Indian Express that any military target in Lahore or other parts of Pakistan will only be hit in response to any offensive action from their side. The Border Security Force (BSF) troops in Punjab's Ferozepur sector shot dead an unidentified Pakistani intruder when he tried to enter the Indian territory on the intervening night last night and today, said officials. The body has been handed to the police, and investigations are going on to ascertain his identity. According to officials, the incident occurred near Gate No. 207 at the Lakha Singhwala Hithar BSF checkpost in the Mamdot sector of the Ferozepur district, one of the six border districts in Punjab.Built as a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles form a crucial part of India's arsenal, with Uttar Pradesh set to be the centre of its production. On May 11, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate a BrahMos missile manufacturing unit in Lucknow whose target is to produce 80 to 100 missiles annually. The unit, whose foundation stone was laid in 2021, is part of a Defence Industrial Corridor that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced in 2018 during the global investors' summit.Ukraine's parliament voted today in favour of ratifying a minerals deal signed with the United States, an agreement Kyiv hopes will secure future military assistance from Washington in its fight to repel Russian troops. Despite misgivings by some Ukrainian lawmakers over whether the government had provided them with all the information on the deal and over some of its compromises, 338 voted in favour of ratifying the agreement, with none against. Some lawmakers had raised concerns over the lack of detail of some of the deal's provisions, such as how an envisaged investment fund for Ukraine's reconstruction would be governed or how any contributions would be made.

The recent war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East have provided valuable lessons when it comes to the nature of future military modernisation and defense innovation. While traditional warfare remains relevant, we are seeing a shift towards multi-domain operations that are more kinetic and are increasingly utilizing autonomous weapons. As India seeks to boost its defence exports, its domestic industry will have a role to play. Several factors have played a role in the recent spike in defence exports—regulatory initiatives, enhanced capability of the private sector, and the desire among other countries to diversify away from their traditional defence partners and look at India instead. Additionally, the INDUS-X initiative between India and the U.S. has also been noted as a welcome mechanism to encourage further defence cooperation in other emerging technologies such as quantum computing, space, cyber-security, and deep-sea technology. What are the potential opportunities that international collaborations present? Will India's domestic industry be able to meet the armed forces' requirements? In this episode of Interpreting India, Ajay Kumar and Konark Bhandari talk about the current status of defence innovation in India and the emerging trends in this space. Episode ContributorsAjay Kumar is a nonresident senior fellow at Carnegie India. He served as the defense secretary of India between August 2019 and October 2022 and is the longest serving secretary in the Ministry of Defence, where he also served as secretary in the Department of Defence Production. In January 2020, General Bipin Rawat became the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces. However, his tenure was tragically cut short by a helicopter crash in December 2021. The position remained vacant for almost nine months until General Anil Chauhan took over. Why did it take so long to fill the CDS position after General Rawat's passing? Was there genuine effort to reach political consensus earlier? There were also concerns whether the CDS post was created solely for General Rawat, believed to be a favorite of the Modi government. Has the CDS role achieved anything substantial? What was the dream when the post was conceptualised and where do we stand now?Host Dev Goswami and defense expert Shiv Aroor delve into the history of the CDS position, tracing it back to the Kargil war. The Kargil review committee, formed in 1999, recommended the CDS position due to evident lack of coordination between the army and air force during the conflict. But, are India's armed forces truly 'joint' despite the creation of the CDS role in 2019?The duo also reflects on General Rawat's legacy, marked by controversies like his remarks classifying the Air Force as a 'support arm', in an India Today interview. Does this hint at deeper divisions within the military?Examining progress towards synergy among the armed forces, they ponder whether India is truly advancing in jointmanship or still grappling with turf wars and egos, exemplified by debates over HAL Prachand helicopters.Listen in!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound mix by Nitin Rawat

Join host Dev Goswami and "Def-Savvy" Abhishek Bhalla, who are joined by a special guest Col. Rajvir Sharma, a distinguished infantry officer from the 15 Jat Regiment, as they delve into the requirements and qualities necessary to become an officer in the Indian Armed Forces. Col. Sharma, who served the Indian army for over 30 years in challenging regions like the Line of Control, high-altitude areas of J&K, and the Indo-Tibet border, now shares his vast experience through a successful edtech startup that trains defense aspirants. Why is honesty, teamwork, and assertiveness highly valued in officers? Col. Sharma offers valuable insights into the significance of these traits and their impact on effective military leadership. Moreover, we dispel the misconception that SSB is biased towards candidates from privileged backgrounds, as Col. Sharma asserts, "SSB has nothing to do with one's humble origins." Tune in to gain a comprehensive understanding of the path to 'officerhood' in the Indian Military and unlock the secrets to excelling in the SSB selection process.

Squadron leader Avani Chaturvedi, the Indian Air Force's first female fighter pilot, is set to take part in a maiden air exercise ‘Veer Guardian-2023'. The exercise will be carried out from January 16 to January 26 at the Hyakuri Air Base and its surrounding airspace in Omitama, and the Iruma Air Base in Sayama in Japan. The women officers have been participating in wargames with the foreign contingents coming to India, including the French Air Force where two of the lady fighter pilots took part, but this would be the first time they would be representing the country on foreign land. Besides, Captain Shiva Chouhan of the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps became the first woman officer to get operationally deployed at the world's highest battlefield, Siachen, after a month's arduous training at Siachen Battle School along with other personnel. All this is brilliant, however, questions are raised of women's limited representation. Women have been serving in the Indian Armed Forces in various roles for several decades. They are currently allowed to serve in all branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. In recent years, the Indian government has made efforts to increase the representation of women in the Armed Forces, with a goal of having women comprise 15% of the military by 2020. However, due to various factors, the representation of women in the Indian Armed Forces is still relatively low, with women making up just over 3% of the military as of 2021. Despite this, women have been serving in non-combat roles such as in logistics, medical and education corps, and have also been inducted in combat roles in the Indian Airforce. In the 41st episode of In Our Defence, Dev Goswami, the show's host, and "Def-Savvy" Abhishek Bhalla the national bureau chief, are joined by India Today TV's Executive Editor Preeti Choudhry. Well, Preeti does have an army background but “she never describes herself as a fauji brat”, Bhalla remarks. Referring to Chaturvedi's achievement Bhalla believes that it's not a landmark. “Because if she is already a fighter pilot, she would be expected to be going to such exercises.” “Talking about these is really cosmetic.” I feel the army is more discriminatory than the other armed forces,” Preeti says. Tune in to this relevant discussion on women's sparse representation in the armed forces. Produced by Anna Priyadarshini Sound mix by Amrit Regi

The biggest dream/ problem or the confusion amongst growing teens is Career. A large population of Indian Youth aims to build careers in the armed forces and directly/indirectly I was also a part of it. One of the biggest differentiators between the armed forces career and corporate is that the armed forces career is time-bound in many aspects like you can join defense in a particular age band and have to retire at a certain age. While armed forces open the door for employment and, the youth protects our country outside and inside; one of the biggest concerns is the youth does not contribute to the economy directly. For example, almost 1.5 million super talented people who serve the armed forces, if become the entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, politicians, etc. may boost the economy significantly. I personally know several amazing talents who have served Indian Armed Forces through a short service commission and are now contributing to the economy significantly. But, this facility wasn't available to the junior talents until now. Fortunately, there is a great scheme by the Indian government to employ, train and enable youth to become more productive and self-reliant. But, there is a lot of confusion around it that needs clarity. To address this lack of clarity, I have Capt. Shashank Shandilya with me on the show today who simplified several aspects for the benefit of our youth. Do listen to this episode and share with the youth who are willing to contribute to the country and economy. I'll see you soon. Jai Hind Vivek
