Dr. Siddharth Panwar took a different bet, building India's first non-invasive brain-computer interface on 60,000 hours of EEG data that hospitals were about to throw away. Trained at Stanford as an electrical engineer and forged at IIT Delhi as a brain scientist, Dr. Siddharth Panwar spent ten years sitting outside neurologists' rooms collecting EEG data that nobody else wanted. That patience became NeuroDx.ai, the deeptech startup behind MANAS-1, India's first 400-million-parameter brain foundation model trained on 60,000 hours of EEG signals from over 25,000 patients. Ravi and I have known each other online since the very early days of Twitter - we're talking 2007, when there were so few Indians on the platform that you just kind of knew everyone who was there. But we had never actually spoken to each other until this conversation. Worth every year of the wait.Ravi dropped out of IIT Delhi after just 6 months, finished his engineering degree in Delhi, worked at a few companies, got an offer to move to the UK, and took it. That was ten years ago. He now runs SPARXSYS, which builds software products including apps that work within Jira - the project management tool used by teams worldwide. He also talked about how his company is now using AI to record and summarise all internal meetings, so you can ask it what happened in an entire quarter and get one clean report back.We also had a really honest conversation about what it's like to leave India and build a life somewhere else. Coming from Delhi, London can feel quiet - even boring - at first. He loves going back to India, loves the food and the chaos of Delhi, but after about three weeks he's ready to return to the UK. That push and pull between two homes is something I completely relate to as someone who moved to Australia a year and a half ago.And then things got very meta - Ravi asked me about my content workflow and I ended up explaining exactly how I use Opus Clip and Claude AI to turn a one-hour live conversation into short clips, transcripts, and blog posts. The new-age ‘Designer X' is expected to bring  a little bit of everything to the table. They understand the basics of sustainability, how their designs would impact things like climate change and culture. And they would also generally know a little bit of coding too. And that is because the whole perception of design has shifted. Just last month, IIT Delhi announced a new certificate course in design thinking. It quoted multiple reports explaining why aspirants should take it. One of them was a 2023 Deloitte report that said companies that integrated design thinking in their innovation process brought new products to market 50 per cent faster than others and saw 2.5 X more revenue growth.The latest batch of design generalists are the products of a new era of design education that has been sweeping through India's universities. As of now, about a dozen have started their own design schools. Nakshatra, an IIT Delhi graduate, developed a deep interest in astrology after facing significant health crises, including a false diagnosis of blood cancer and a paralytic attack in 2011. Initially skeptical, he became intrigued by the accurate predictions made by an astrologer. This fascination led him to study astrology in depth, and after a decade of learning, he decided to pursue it full-time. In August 2023, an independent think-tank in India called The Infravision Foundation got together with a couple of professors from IIT Delhi and published a whitepaper. It pointed out issues with India's metro rail network. No one paid much attention to it initially. But then, UK-based publication The Economist picked it up last week.
