The documentary “I've Got a Monster” is now available in select theaters and for rent/purchase on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and Vudu. The documentary, directed by Kevin Abrams, focuses on lawyer Ivan Bates' tireless role as the defense attorney for the many victims of Baltimore City police officer, Wayne Jenkins' corruption. Abrams and Bates join me to discuss the film, which shows in painful detail how Jenkins and members of the Baltimore City Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force robbed and imprisoned innocent people for their own financial gain. The documentary meticulously details how in 2017, Jenkins and six other BCPD officers were indicted on racketeering charges, and in doing so, gives voice to those who fell victim to their despicable scheme. When he was running for office last year, attorney Ivan Bates pledged that if elected, he would rescind the policy of then States Attorney Marilyn Mosby regarding the prosecution of low level crimes. Mosby announced her office would not prosecute a specific list of so called “quality of life” crimes during the COVID outbreak, but continued that policy when many COVID restrictions were lifted. Now, Ivan Bates is the State's Attorney for Baltimore City, and he has reinstated the pre-COVID policy, with some significant changes. As of 10 days ago, Baltimore police began issuing citations for so called “quality of life crimes,” a departure from the previous policy of the State's Attorney and police. Citations for crimes like riding a dirt bike, public drunkenness, loitering, aggressive panhandling, trespassing and malicious destruction of property will now be handled on a special docket that is intended to offer those who are cited an alternative to prosecution and jail time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF) was meant to help the Baltimore Police Department fight violent crime. Instead, its officers terrorised innocent civilians. In 2017, a criminal investigation resulted in the successful prosecution of the officers, and they were convicted of extortion, fraud, racketeering, and robbery. In I Got A Monster, director Kevin Abrams tells the story of what happened, and how a crusading defence attorney named Ivan Bates helped bring the corrupt police officers to justice. In the documentary, Kevin also speaks to the GTTF's victims, giving a voice to people too often denied one. Kevin tells host Matthew Sherwood about the GTTF's Jekyll and Hyde leader. Wayne Jenkins was a tough but charismatic cop. Away from the spotlight, however, he was also utterly corrupt. They explore the question of how so many officers, who were also the subject of internal police investigations, managed to end up in the same unit. Was it a coincidence or a conspiracy? Kevin and Matthew discuss the broader issue of police corruption in the US, how it has been allowed to continue, and what has happened to the Baltimore Police Department since 2017, Kevin also reflects on his experience of making I Got A Monster, which was completed thanks to the goodwill and help of a diverse range of people, including the FBI, local journalists, and Baltimoreons. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com ”... documentary has a great ability to humanise things, and to make things feel real [so] that people can get a greater understanding emotionally of what people are dealing with... police corruption and the victims of it.” – Kevin Abrams

Midday begins today with Tom's Newsmaker guest, Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates. He's a Democrat, and he's been in office for a couple of months after winning a three-way primary and facing no Republican opponent in the general election last November. He has been a vocal advocate for a bill under consideration in the General Assembly that would lengthen sentences for those over the age of 21 who are convicted of carrying a gun without a permit. That position has put him at odds with guns rights advocates on the right, and criminal justice reform advocates on the left. He's also been working on attracting qualified attorneys to the State's Attorney's office, and he has appointed several new division heads.
