This week, we're talking about some good news. Some very good news, actually. The murder rate, which has been on the decline for a couple of years now, is on pace to hit a record low. That's what the early data collected by Jeff Asher's AH Datalytics indicates. Asher joins the show to break down the numbers he's seeing so far. He said the murder rate surged during the pandemic, but it has already fallen back to those levels and kept dropping further. While the FBI's murder data for 2025 won't be out for nearly a year, Asher collects crime data from many of the same sources. He said his data shows a huge early decline in the murder rate that would equate to an all-time low if sustained. He cautioned that the decline is likely to slow as the year progresses, but it should still hit a record. Special Guest: Jeff Asher.

For our Wednesday politics episode, District Attorney Larry Krasner visits City Cast Philly to make his case for why he deserves a third term as the city's chief prosecutor. He touts the lowest murder rate in a half-century, compares his opponent to Donald Trump, tells his side of why there hasn't been a debate in the race, talks about the Eagles' visit to the White House, discusses the role of George Soros' money in his campaigns, analyzes the mayor's “work-in-progress” plan in Kensington, and defends himself from criticism that he doesn't work well with other elements of law enforcement. His opponent, former Judge Pat Dugan – who rejects any comparison to Trump, by the way – will be on the show next Wednesday, May 7, so stay tuned. This week, we're looking at crime data and the unprecedented drop in the murder rate. That's why we have Jeff Asher from AH Datalytics back on the show. He has been following and reporting crime data for decades, and he explains how dramatic the downturn in murder is compared to the incredible spike we saw just a few years ago. He said 2023 saw a record drop in murder, and 2024 is on pace to see the same. Asher discussed how crime stats are calculated, addressed some of the critiques of them, and explained why he believes murder data is especially trustworthy this year. He also noted violent crime and property crime haven't followed murder. While they, too, have fallen in recent years, they also never saw the same kind of horrendous spike that murder did in 2020 and 2021. Special Guest: Jeff Asher.
When Nelson Mandela and the ANC delivered South Africa from Apartheid in the 90s, hopes were high that the country could become a beacon of freedom and fairness. A generation later, those dreams lie in tatters. Elites have plundered state coffers to the tune of billions, mines have been taken over by illegal “chancers,” and the ghettoes of South Africa's largest city, Cape Town, are suffering levels of violence unseen since segregation. Left with few opportunities, corrupt cops and hundreds of gangs, locals have turned to private security firms, the country's new boom trade. Others have thrown up roadblocks and christened whip-wielding vigilante groups, as the country descends into ever more hellish levels of organized crime. Everyone loves a good counternarrative, especially when the prevailing narrative is a dire one and the counter offers credible reasons for hope – backed by data that bears up to scrutiny. In this episode, writer Troy Aidan Sambajon talks with host Clay Collins about a crime-stat story that became something more. It's a validation – with some big caveats – of community policing, community agency, and the central ingredient: a willingness to try building trust.

The murder rate is falling again, and mass shootings have been absent so far this year. This is good news, but it's also a bit confusing. Why is the murder rate dropping after several years of increasing? Is the same effect happening with mass shootings? Does the data show the two are connected? That's why we've got data analyst Jeff Asher back on the show. He runs AH Datalytics and collects his own crime statistics. He joined us last year when his crime data suggested 2023 would see a huge downturn in murder across the country. He was right. This year, he's seeing an even larger decline. Mass shootings are down, too. Whatever definition you use for the awful phenomenon, and we discuss the pros and cons of the different ones out there, the downtrend is interesting--especially since it now appears to track with overall murder. Jeff does his best to explain why these trends are happening and look forward, though he emphasizes the future is impossible to predict. Special Guest: Jeff Asher.

This week, we're taking a closer look at the data that indicates the murder rate is finally on a downward slope. And there's no better guest to have than the man who has documented the decline. Crime analyst Jeff Asher joins the show to give us insight into his methodology for tracking murder across the country. His numbers show what could be a historic reversal of the recent murder spike. The data from over 100 city police departments indicate murder may be down as much as 10 percent. But Asher also explains the limitations of real-time data as well as the continuing problems with the FBI's data collection. Still, he says trends in even a few cities can be broadly predictive nationwide. And what he's seeing is backed up by other measures as well. Of course, not every city is improving, and Asher highlights standout cities going in either direction. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I talk about the downturn in gun sales. And we have another member segment!

Award-winning South African script writer and film director Craig Freimond likes to work in comedy. He is known for films like Gums & Noses, Jozi, Material, Beyond the River, and New Material. When a young actor Freimond had come to know called Sibusiso Khwinana, the star of the movie Matwetwe, was murdered – for a cellphone – Craig tried to come to terms with how this random act of violence caused unimaginable sadness. Although he is a trauma counsellor at his local police station in Johannesburg and has seen the effects of the country's rampant crime at close range, Freimond was devastated by Sbu's death and decided to make a documentary film to understand why crime in South Africa is so violent and whether something could be done about it. The result is “57” – a documentary film which tries to answer the why and find solutions to the country's violent crimes. For those who would rather run for the hills than watch a film about violent crime in South Africa – the subject is handled in an entertaining and informative manner with solutions offered. Freimond told BizNews that he wanted to start a conversation and sees it as a call to action for society to look at the issue of violent crime in a deeper and more meaningful way. – Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. Hour Two - Larry and Marty break down the numbers.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime conducted a study in 2019 on homicide. It examined the statistics for 2017. The global study reports that “464,000 people were murdered in 2017—more than five times as many as were killed in armed conflicts during the same period.”* The study also provides homicide rates for most countries in the world. In the United States, there were 5 homicides for every 100,000 people. Our neighbor Mexico had 29 homicides per 100,000. But El Salvador had the highest homicide rate at 61 homicides per 100,000 people.* Let's face it, there's a lot of murder in the world. Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder.” Of all the ten commandments, I suspect more people agree that murder is an evil than any of the other commandments. The high value of human life, created in God's image, causes us to abhor murder. But Jesus challenges us to abhor other things as well. Listen to Matthew 5:21-22, “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.” (NIV) Today, treat others well. That's how we can value life. *"Murder Rate by Country 2022", World Population Review, https://worldpopulationreview.com. Accessed 26 July 2022. Guest: Deann Alford | Julian Gibb interviews Deann Alford. Deann Alford shares experiences from her book "Victorious: The Impossible Path to Peace" with stories that took place in Colombia, and the victory that teaching the Bible has had. "Colombia has been a quagmire even before the Spaniards; their history was warfare, murder, violence, and revenge." What can stop this spiral of violence? Deann says that in a prison "were FARC guerrillas, paramilitary, common criminals, mafioso's, and dirty cops imprisoned" together, Deann continues, "Formerly the murder rate was 60 per month, people settling scores in the prison." "A church pastor asked permission, after he and his church fasted and prayed for two weeks, to go in with white flags, singing hymns, to stop the violence." Deann continues, "The pastor got on the loud speaker in the prison, praying, and speaking peace, and the prisoners started throwing down their weapons." "They could have shot them dead. Instead they threw their weapons down." Missionary Jeannine Brabon set up a Bible institute. Fewer than 10% became Christian, but it was enough to change the entire atmosphere in the prison, and then the murder rate dropped to one per year. What that shows is it does not take many people to change the atmosphere in a place."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
