What would it be to learn to help other people turn deeply towards their own lives? We've been asking this question in many ways over the past more than seven years, and this week we turn towards a great love of ours, the Thirdspace Professional Coaching Course, which is designed around this very question. This year's course begins in June and applications are coming in. In this rich conversation we talk together about what it is to be an attentive, compassionate and wise support for the development of others, and what it might be like to learn with us over the course of a year. You can find out more about the programme on the Thirdspace website wearethirdspace.org This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction to the Thirdspace Professional Coaching Course 03:03 The Heart of Integral Development Coaching 05:59 Navigating Life's Interruptions with Creativity and Compassion 08:47 The Role of Community in Learning to Coach 12:03 Coaching is Learning to Turn Towards Life 14:58 The Importance of Belonging and Contribution 17:51 Embracing Creativity and Courage in Difficult Times 21:06 The Journey of Self-Discovery 23:55 Practical Skills for Life and Coaching 27:00 Conclusion and Invitation to Join 30:38 Taking Up Our "Right Size" in the World Here's our source for this week: Coaching and Learning to Coach Every so often in life we pause and make note of the person we have become and the one we are becoming. Sometimes this reflection is prompted by professional circumstances, like a promotion, performance review, job change, or firing. Just as often it emerges from the “rest of life” – as through an illness, death, or the beginning or ending of a relationship. Whatever the origin, these experiences can feel like an opportunity or a burden, a chance to develop or a painful lesson…and often both. How we make sense of these experiences often determines what actions we take, and this, of course, influences our competence and fulfilment in life. Wouldn't it be wonderful, in these moments, to have someone by our side to ask skilful questions, listen deeply, be fully present with who we are and what we say, point out our blind spots, and custom-design practices to help us move forward? And wouldn't it be marvellous, too, to be this person for others? The Professional Coaching Course (PCC) exists in large part due to the primacy of these questions for ourselves and the people we serve. Integral Development Coaching is what happens when two people develop a professional relationship that is grounded in mutual trust and respect, directed toward a set of clear outcomes, guided by presence, and informed by broad models about what it means to be a human being. It is a methodology. It is an integration project. It is a moment when you feel deeply connected to yourself and others, with a deep acceptance of everything, and you take practical steps to move forward in life. It is both simpler and more complex than it sounds. James Flaherty and Amiel Handelsmann From ‘Integrating Rigour, Compassion, and Creative Design - an Introduction to Integral Development Coaching and the PCC' Join Us Live in 2025 On Sunday 8th June 2025 it will be our 400th episode and we are planning a Turning Towards Life live gathering on Zoom. Are you ready to redefine what aging means for you? In a world that often views aging as a limitation, what if you could flip the script and see it as a new beginning? In this episode of the Productivity Smarts Podcast, host Gerald J. Leonard chats with James Flaherty, an inspiring 89-year-old author and motivational speaker. They dive into how aging impacts productivity and the mindset that can help us lead fulfilling lives as we grow older. Living in a charming 1940s dairy barn in the Berkshires, Jim truly believes that you're "only as old as you think you are." His latest book, Loving Longevity, reflects this philosophy. Jim attributes his success to a strong work ethic and the joy he finds in his craft. He shares a memorable quote from Noël Coward: “Work is more fun than fun,” underscoring the value of daily routines and prioritizing tasks. He recommends creating a nightly to-do list to ease anxiety and make space for creativity. Throughout their conversation, Jim emphasizes the importance of social connections and staying active. He talks about “blue zones,” where community ties lead to longer lives. To tackle loneliness, he encourages listeners to engage with their communities and nurture relationships. Jim's insights remind us that embracing aging can open doors to new passions and opportunities, making it a journey worth celebrating. Tune in now to discover how you can embrace aging and unlock your potential! What We Discuss [02:01] Introduction to James Flaherty [06:13] Daily discipline and routine [09:04] Music and inspiration [13:14] The importance of work ethic [17:58] Gratitude and happiness [20:56] Mindset over physical condition [22:39] The importance of education at any age [24:17] Engaging with life [35:27] Finding purpose in aging Notable Quotes [05:08] “If you want to live a long time, you have to take care of the basic machine. I eat properly, I don't smoke, and I exercise every morning, whether I want to or not.” - James Flaherty [17:58] “Every day I am grateful, and every day I show gratitude for that. At 89, I do not wake up in pain, and I have never awakened depressed.” - James Flaherty [19:25] “Every morning of your life, you're going to have to confront your biggest critic, your biggest enemy, the highest wall you have to hurdle—it's that person in your bathroom mirror.” - James Flaherty [33:40] “The biggest problem of aging is that too many elders are living alone because she has died or he has died, and they're alone. Loneliness is the biggest stress and perhaps the biggest cause of early death.” - James Flaherty Guest Bio Jim Flaherty was an international advertising writer/creative director who has published two novels, and two non-fiction books. He was also creator and innkeeper of a five-star country inn/conference center. He is a frequent motivational speaker about aging cheerfully. In 1991, James Flaherty, MCC, founder of New Ventures West, graduated from the Hoffman Process in Virginia. After completing the Process, both James and his wife, Stacy, began to sponsor the Process in Virginia. They found the retreat site, enrolled people, scheduled the teachers, and transported them to the retreat site. They did this for six Processes over a few years. As James says, they were, and still are, deeply committed to the Hoffman Process. Often, our hosts ask our guests if there was a pivotal moment in the Process that has stayed with them. For James, it was when he had an epiphany about the gifts he knew he had to offer to this world. When he heard his teacher tell him that he was a powerful person, he felt a weight drop from his shoulders. He realized he could give his gifts to the world in a "better way." James walks us through the kind of coaching training that New Ventures West offers. He articulates beautifully what happens to our hearts when we are young, how heartache can squash our innate goodness, scarring us so our goodness can not get out into the world. James offers how healing it is when we act for the sake of others. In doing so, we receive much in return. With loving generosity, James thanks Hoffman staff and faculty for all they do to support this powerfully transformative work offered through the Hoffman Institute. Thank you, James. We hope you enjoy this heart-opening conversation with James and Sharon. More about James Flaherty: James Flaherty, MCC, founder of New Ventures West, is the author of the seminal text, Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others. He has developed a uniquely effective approach to adult education by integrating discoveries in linguistics, developmental psychology, sociology, philosophy, and biology into the practical and customized methodology known as Integral Coaching®. He coaches executives, managers, and leaders throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. James lives in San Francisco with his wife and has an adult daughter whom he adores. In addition to being a voracious reader, he practices yoga and qigong. James owns a large collection of CDs, mostly in the classical, rock, and jazz genres. He enjoys theatre and travel. He is a longtime Zen student, studying with Norman Fischer of Everyday Zen. You can find out more about James on his website and on LinkedIn. As mentioned in this episode: New Ventures West, founded in 1987 The Vagus Nerve Some research from Boston College about mentors and mentoring and people dedicated to assisting others had much more happen for them than those who were not. If you want to meet a guy with an inspiring life and attitude, meet James Flaherty. 'Jim' who's 88, gets my weekly newsletter which happened to land in his email while he was sitting in the airport in Cabo San Lucas. He wrote me back while waiting for a plane back home to N.Y. and told me he'd just spent a week at the 'Modern Elder Academy'. Sounded interesting so I wrote him back I wanted him to come on my show and report on what went on there. I had featured Jim Flaherty on my show earlier in the year after chancing upon a book he wrote that I spotted on an old wooden table in an old wooden General Store in Amenia, N.Y. I was sparked that day by the cover of “Dear Old Friends” but what really cracked me up and made me buy the book, is that while quickly scanning it I read he had started writing it in his 40s and finally finished it in his 80s. My kinda procrastinator! Jim has a big fun brain. Before becoming a writer, he worked in advertising, and his life, he says, was just like to the TV series "Mad Men”. Jim also built and ran a successful country inn and conference center called Troutbeck in Amenia NY for 30 years. It's spectacular in case you're ever headed in that direction. Why is Jim my ‘America idol'? Because at 88 he's vibrant and positive, with no regrets and a belief that every day is a miracle. And because he wrote to me while I was sitting home pathetically with a heating pad on my lower back, while his spunky 88 year old self flew his butt to Baja, Mexico to attend a curious midlife wisdom school. I seriously need to learn from whatever he's doing. Jim's second book out now, "Embrace Your Age," is getting attention for its empowering message too, especially the importance of waking up with ‘purpose'. Jim wakes up every day doing some deep breathing exercises and thinking of ways to help others. So what was Jim's ‘Modern Elder Academy Experience' all about? He describes it as a place for navigating transitions and cultivating purpose in midlife and beyond. The age range of attendees at the Academy varied he said, with most being in their 60s and some in their 50s and 70s. Jim says midlife crises can occur between ages 40 and 70 and pointed out being 88, that he was the oldest person there that week. The highlight he said, was the comradery and the sense of community and connection formed there. He felt he left with having formed a whole new group of friends. Jim says, it's a place for navigating transitions and cultivating purpose in midlife and beyond. By the way, Forbes did a story on the Modern Elder Academy a few years ago and called it ‘The Cool School For Midlifers'. I read that it's the world's first midlife wisdom school where you can unlock old hopes and discover new dreams in person beachside in Baja or in the creative corridor Santa Fe, or online from home in your pajamas. Sounds cool to me. Ya gotta love Jim Flaherty's energy and spirit. As for his future at 88? Well, he may teach a workshop at the Modern Elder Academy, but he's also looking for an agent to sell his TV series, screenplay, and two novels. Oh, and he wants me to come visit him back up in Amenia and take a swim in his indoor swimming pool. LOL .OK fine, fine, Jim, whatever youre doing I want to do too. Enjoy this podcast of our live radio conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show. It's truly an uplifting and motivational discussion on aging gracefully, finding purpose, and staying active and engaged in life's later years. It's about the cool way to get old.

At least 30 states are reinstating coverage for children wrongly removed from the rolls under Medicaid redetermination, the federal government reported. It's just the latest hiccup in the massive effort to review the eligibility of Medicaid beneficiaries now that the program's pandemic-era expansion has expired. Listeners to our last podcast enjoyed a discussion about 19th Century Seminole Men's Clothing – and what an enterprise it is to recreate them. Unfortunately, the 1991 spiral-bound book is out of print and hard to obtain. That is, until now. Enter living history enthusiast and researcher James Flaherty. Jim is a friend of the key individuals behind the Seminole Men's clothing book – Rick Obermeyer and Pete Thompson. He has attended and participated in various Seminole War reenactments and events since the 1980s. Jim is also an artisan who hand crafts period accoutrements, leather items and clothing. Hence, Jim's new book is Seminole Wars-era Clothing. He and fellow historical enthusiasts penned entries featuring everything one needs to know about crafting period-appropriate clothing. This includes Seminole men and women; American civilian men and women; and military service members from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps. Jim tells why he wrote this book and why this book needed to be written. He dedicates it to living history reenactors, hobbyists, and students of the trade. But any general reader will find it fascinating how he takes one on a journey from written accounts and painted images to obtaining materials and piecing together the clothing items one by one. Jim Flaherty is a member of the Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationists, the Seminole Wars Foundation, the Dade Battlefield Society, and the Morse Telegraph Club. Image captures are below. Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. This podcast is recorded at the homestead of the Seminole Wars Foundation in Bushnell, Fla. Today we talk to New Yorker, James Flaherty, who has wonderful sense of humor, great words of inspiration, and an excellent retirement journey! Jim has written a new book titled Dear Old Friends , a reminder to live life to it's fullest and never stop dancing. We enjoyed our talk and promise you will too! We can't wait to read his new book! Enjoy our new friend Jim! You will fall in love with him too!
In this episode, I am speaking (and smiling) with Jim Flaherty, who was a madman on NYC's Madison Avenue, an innkeeper, father, grandfather, great grandfather, a caregiver of a partner with dementia, and now, an author. Jim's new book, DEAR OLD FRIENDS—A LOVING REMINDER THE BAND WONT' STOP PLAYING TILL YOU STOP DANCING, tackles the most important part of aging healthfully—your mental attitude—being involved with living, and loving life, every day. Jim speaks, writes, and gives care from an interesting viewpoint—he's 86 years old…he told me he's going on 60 . . . but he is 86. Besides his book, he has been a guest blogger speaking to aging women and is a frequent speaker at elderly residential and rehab centers. Jim is also a director of his church and says with an aging congregation, it's important to keep them involved, mentally and spiritually. Tune in a lovely conversation and great nuggets.
"86 going on 60." That's what and how my guest feels. James Flaherty is the author of https://www.amazon.com/DEAR-OLD-FRIENDS-REMINDER-PLAYING-ebook/dp/B09MJGH2DZ (Dear Old Friends). The book is a reminder you don't stop playing because you got old--you got old because you stopped playing (and laughing and learning and creating and living). Besides a Happy Memoir from an author who wrote this book at age 44 and 85--DEAR OLD FRIENDS was originally a love letter to all the wonderful, much older friends the author said made his life so much more worthwhile. Full of loving advice for aging magnificently, you'll want to read it and want all your Dear Old Friends--not just your parents--to read, smile, learn and think about how satisfying it is to make every day better. As James reminds us, today is the oldest you've ever been--and the youngest you'll ever be--so let's make today great.
