Welcome to Cryptic Soup, your after-dark podcast. In this week's episode, join Thena and Kylee to talk about an urban legend of when a stranger calls. Was the call actually coming from inside the house? Was it based on a true case, perhaps the story of Janett Christman? Let's figure it out together. PS: Kylee is very sorry for the delay on this episode. It should have been posted on Thanksgiving but time got away with planning the holiday.

It's a story many people know - In the dead of night, a teenage girl finds herself alone in a house, the children she's caring for sound asleep upstairs. She's settled in, watching television, when a phone call breaks the silence. A voice on the other end, cold and sinister, whispers, “Check the children.'" At first, she dismisses it as a prank, but the calls persist, each one more unnerving than the last. Fear begins to claw at her, gripping her heart with icy fingers. Desperate and terrified, she dials 911, and the police promise to trace the next call. When it comes, they call her back, urging her to get the kids and leave the house immediately. She runs from the home and when the police arrive they tell her that the calls were coming from inside the house and a deranged killer has murdered the children. There are many different variations of this urban legend. In some versions everyone survives, in other versions no one survives, but the basic premise is always the same.Although there are no known cases that specifically match the scenario from that urban legend, there is one particular murder that is thought to be the inspiration for the chilling tale, but you might want to curb your expectations because I can tell you that this episode is going to take us into a true horror story where we discuss two haunting, unsolved murders and the disturbing reality of racial injustice in the southern United States in the 1940s. We were surprised to learn how much of it was actual true- or not. Alanna goes a different direction with something a little dark- and fun for gamers?? what have you heard about Polybius, an arcade game that may or may not have existed? On 18th March 1950, 13 year old Janett Christman went to babysit for family friends to earn some pocket money. At around 10.30pm that night the local police received a call from a girl screaming for help and then the line went dead. When the parents arrived home, they found Janett's body.

When a Stranger Calls: The Unsolved Murder of Janett Christman Happy Halloween, Pudding Pod Fam! Have you ever watched the thriller movie ‘When a Stranger Calls'? The premise is a young babysitter is in a home with sleeping children and a strange man keeps calling asking her, “Have you checked the children” ...before hanging up. Frightened, the babysitter calls the police who instruct her to try to keep the stranger on the phone for longer so they can get a trace on the number. The babysitter then receives one final call from the stranger asking if she has checked the children. She tries to keep him on the line a bit longer this time. Immediately after the stranger hangs up the phone rings once more. It's the police. They inform her that the call is coming from…INSIDE THE HOUSE. After watching this movie, we started to wonder where the idea of “the call is coming from inside the house” came from. So, we did a little snooping around and found the horrifying inspiration behind these thrilling films…and although the story is a bit different since Hollywood tends to take liberties to entertain consumers, it is a terrifying story, nonetheless. Today my friends, we will be speaking about the case that inspired the movie ‘When a Stranger Calls'. The 1950 unsolved murder of 13-year-old Janett Christman. Check out todays featured podcast! Allison tells us about Jannett Christman. Unfortunately the movie "When a Stranger Calls" is loosely based on this story.Janett Christman was born on March 21, 1936 in Boonville, Missouri; she was the oldest daughter of Charles & Lula Christman. She had two sisters, Reta, and Cheryl. Janett was described as fun-loving, cheerful, exceptionally hard working & played the piano in choir. Want BONUS EPISODES!? The episode where we talk all things true crime. Sarah goes first with the infamous story of the Hinterkaifeck Murders in Germany. You tell us: aliens or murder?! And our favorite Gef the Mongoose makes a return. Next is Boydston with a local story: Robert Courtney, a deadly pharmacist in KC. Guys, stay away from the grey market and the Devil's juice. Finally is Lindsey with the true story behind a famous urban legend: the babysitter story which originated from the death of Janett Christman in Missouri. Also, Lindsey would like to formally issue an apology: Boydston was right. The Black Forest is in fact, in Germany. Don't quote facts and drink, friends. Urban legends have been around for as long as we can remember, and typically theres always a little bit of truth to those stories. This case became the inspiration to Hollywoods cult classic horror films and also the extreme frustration to most since it remains unsolved. I know I know, but we said we were going to cover solved and unsolved cases. 13 year old Janett Christman's night of babysitting turned to hell in march of 1950. *Trigger Warner for sexual assault of a minor, violent and gruesome crime scene descriptions* Support the show
I would ask if you like scary movies, but I already know you do! For this week's episode I decided to mix things up a bit and give you a little sneak peek at one of the monthly bonus episodes which are usually for patrons only which I have been calling Murder and a Movie. I pick a horror movie, usually a decently well-known one, and talk about that as well as the real-life cases and/or killers which inspired it. And for this episode, I have chosen to feature 1996's Scream, which some have called one of the most influential and pivotal horror movies of all time. Famous as it is, few people know that the plot was actually inspired in part by the real-life horrific murder of a 13-year-old babysitter named Janett Christman in 1950, and the brutal crimes of the Gainesville Ripper in the early 90s. Janett Christman was only 13 years old when she babysat for little Gregory Romack - what Ed and Anne Romack would walk in and find that night would terrify them. Her case to this day remains UNSOLVED.Her parents Charles and Lulu Christman died never having known what truly happened on that dark stormy night of March 18, 1950.This story is the true story behind the first 20 minutes of When a Stranger calls (1979) and strikes fear into the heart of babysitters everywhere.I also talk about Rick James (the next episode of The Right Shoe) coming next time.LoveDebbie Q
Join us this week for a full tilt ride. Hannah starts us off with the Urban Legend of the Babysitter and the Man Upstairs. Creepy right, don't worry it gets worse. The main case of the episode is the murder of Janett Christman, who was just 13 years old at the time of her death. Janett's murder was not the first of it's kind in Columbia, Missouri though. Just 4 years previous, 20-year old Marylou Jenkins was slain in her home while her parents were away. In that case, 35-year old Floyd Jenkins who was probably not mentally fit to stand trial was convicted of the crime and sentenced to the gas chamber. For our science buffs, Hannah tells us about oxidative phosphorylation. Back to the main case, we hear about the complete and total ass-hat Robert Pember Mueller. For astrology, we continue our Aquarius corner and on 1/24 Mars enters Capricorn.
This horrific murder of a young girl actually has a lengend based on her.. and even a movie. Ever seen "When a stranger calls?". Yup that was based on a murder if you didn't know. In this week's episode, Sandra talks about a well-known urban legend called "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs." This legend tells the story of a young girl who is babysitting for a family and keeps receiving phone calls telling her to "check the children." Concerned, she calls the cops who are able to trace the call coming from inside the house. This legend is actually based on the true story of the tragic murder of Janett Christman a young girl who was babysitting in her hometown of Columbia, Missouri in the 1950s who was found murdered, and to this day the mystery remains unsolved. Later, Danielle discusses the pioneering journalist, Nellie Bly. She was one of the few women in 1887 who was given the chance to write pieces related to serious issues. She is mainly known for going undercover as a mentally ill woman who gets placed into an asylum. Her work and dedication to investigating the conditions of mental asylums were lauded by the public. This led to an increase in the budget to improve living conditions. Nellie abruptly left the writing world when she felt underappreciated after famously traveling around the world in 72 days. This week’s podcast episode finds Becky and Merie trading babysitting & housesitting horror stories, including murder that is both solved (Cassie Stoddart) and unsolved (Janett Christman). Along the way they address the burning questions you didn’t know you had, like: Where does babysitting land on Now Fear This’s Fear-o-meter? Who has read the book version of Eyes Wide Shut? If you’re not answering Merie’s texts, are you in jail? And, what kind of grade will you get on that speech? How did Merie survive her older sister’s babysitting? Is our new theme song going to be, “I hate you because you’re so shitty” and who will write the melody? Before murdering someone, should you ask yourself if you’re too dumb to do it? (Hint: yes!) Don’t be scared if Merie asks how you would cover up the perfect murder. She’s asking for a friend. Video of the 2 murderers can be found here. We close the show with an In Memoriam about a man who realized he was dying and wrote a poetic note before he kicked it.Chapters:00:00 - Intro00:17 - ASMR for life05:16 - Erin's Story: A UFO Abducted Travis Walton16:49 - I saw a UFO21:20 - O'Dell's Story: Janett Christman - The Babysitter Murder45:23 - In Memoriam: Poetry by Thornton Joneshttps://www.patreon.com/someoneprobablydied?fan_landing=true (Support us on Patreon)Check out our website at https://someoneprobablydied.com (someoneprobablydied.com) for more information on this week's episode, including links to resources and videos mentioned during the show.If you have a creepy story or unsolved mystery that you'd like to share with us, send us a message to killerstory@someoneprobablydied.https://www.instagram.com/someoneprobablydied/ (Follow us on Instagram)

A young babysitter is tormented by creepy phone calls until the operator gives her some unthinkable information, "The call is coming from inside the house!" The legend has been in circulation for half a century and inspired multiple movies, but what's the truth behind the legend? Are babysitters really in danger? The Preppy Murder is Sundance's five-part look at the murder of Jennifer Levin by Robert Chambers, and how it gripped New York City for years starting in August of 1986. Guest Piper Weiss and I remember those headlines well, but the miniseries corrects our memory on some points -- though we're still not sure why this is coming out now, or why Linda Fairstein's participation isn't asterisked in some way. In the Cold Case section, Piper and I revisit one segment of Zeman and Mills's Killer Legends, with Piper theorizing on why the "call coming from inside the house" urban legend gained traction and both of us recommending Zeman's Cropsey. We also talk about ghost apps, snack diplomacy, and more in The Blotter Presents, Episode 120. Urban legend ‘The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs’ inspired the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls. But what if there was some truth to the legend? In 1950, 13-year-old Janett Christman was brutally raped and strangled while babysitting in Missouri. Three years later 15-year-old Evelyn Hartley was babysitting when she disappeared, leaving nothing but a broken eyeglasses and a trail of blood… This week’s sponsors: HelloFresh (http://www.hellofresh.co.uk) are offering our listeners £60 off 4 boxes. March 18, 1950. Columbia, Missouri. 13-year old Janett Christman shows up at a married couple's residence to spend the evening babysitting their child. When the couple returns home, they discover that Janett has been raped and strangled to death by an intruder, and the local sheriff's department would report having received a phone call from Janett while she was being attacked. The investigation uncovers a promising suspect named Robert Mueller, whom Janett had also babysat for, but there is not enough evidence to make an arrest. Four years earlier, another young Columbia woman was murdered in a strikingly similar fashion and a suspect went to the gas chamber for the crime. But could an innocent man have been executed while the real killer went on to murder Janett Christman? On this week's Halloween-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a creepy unsolved crime which inspired an infamous urban legend. On March 18, 1950, 13-year-old Janett Christman was babysitting for the Romacks in their small, isolated home on the outskirts of Columbia, Missouri. That night, the police received a phone call from a girl screaming hysterically but were unable to get an address. At 1:35 a.m., the Romacks returned home to find Janett murdered. The still-unsolved crime inspired the widely told urban legend, the babysitter and the man upstairs, which itself inspired several movies including the 1979 horror film “When a Stranger Calls” and its 2006 remake. On Sunday, 3/16 at 8pE, CHILLER debuts its new 2-hour special, KILLER LEGENDS. The horror documentary follows filmmakers Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills as they investigate the true crimes behind these urban legends while exploring how the myths evolved and why we continue to believe. The documentary probes the following legends of:The Candyman: Though the legend is prolific, in actuality there is only one documented case of a child dying from tainted candy: 8-year-old Timothy O'Bryan, who was poisoned on Halloween by a real-life miscreant who used the legend to hide his crime, earning him the fateful nickname. The Baby-Sitter and the Man Upstairs: While the babysitter has become the go-to victim in so many horror films, does the same hold true in real life? Tragically, yes, as the filmmakers discover in unsolved case of Janett Christman, a babysitter slain in Columbia, MO, in 1950.The Hookman: Based upon the legend of two teens lovers terrorized by a madman with a hook for a hand, filmmakers investigate the case of a killer known as The Phantom, who in 1946 attacked five couples parked on lovers' lanes in Texarkana. The Killer Clown: The filmmakers investigate “phantom clown” scares that have spontaneously occurred since the 1980s. As the duo explores Chicago's creepy clown past, from John Wayne Gacy to Bozo, they attempt to answer the question of how clowns became so evil, and why they continue to haunt our nightmares.Joshua Zeman has been creating independent films for over 10 years. His critically-acclaimed horror documentary CROPSEY, was critic's pick with The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Roger Ebert, and was “one of the scariest films of the year” in 2010.
