On the morning of August 26, 1986, a cyclist in New York's Central Park discovered the body eighteen-year-old Jennifer Levin. Among other things, Levin had been strangled, there were superficial injuries on her face, and her shirt was pulled up. Later, the medical examiner reported that Jennifer had died only about an hour before she was discovered. It didn't take long for investigators to find Levin's assailant, after several patrons at a nearby bar reported seeing her with a man the night before. That man turned out to be nineteen-year-old Robert Chambers Jr., a privileged members of New York's Upper East Side high society. At first, Chambers denied having anything to do with the murder, but soon changed his story and claimed Levin had died during consensual “rough sex” initiated by Levin herself.Nicknamed the “The Preppy Killer” by the press, a reference to his good looks and obvious privilege, Chambers' trial became a media circus. Over the course of more than a year, people around the country watched as the defense tried—and with the help of the press, succeeded—to put the responsibility for Levin's murder on the victim, emphasizing her sexual history and manner of dress, among other things. Judgy Crime Girls

Subscriber-only episodeThis is the story that inspired the song "Jenny was a friend of mine" by The Killers.18 year old Jennifer Levin met 19 year old Robert Chambers at a bar in New York City, and went for a walk with him in Central Park. Welcome to Untethered: Healing the Pain from a Sudden Death. I am Dr. Jennifer Levin, and I specialize in traumatic death and helping individuals through the struggles, pain, trauma, and chaos of an unexpected death. In today's podcast I interview Cindy and Merle Meyers who reflect on their dating experiences and invite us to into their marriage after Cindy's first husband, Dan, was killed coming home from work one night. When a new couple begins a romantic relationship after one of the partner's has experienced the death of a loved one, it is not just a relationship of two. Circumstances depending, the presence, and in many cases the family, of the previous partner who died is a very real part of the relationship with needs of their own that must be honored and addressed. Today's interview explores Cindy's early coping with traumatic grief after Dan died, and her initial dating experiences with Merle. We then delve into the myriad of issues the couple had to face throughout their marriage including communication, family dynamics, coping mechanisms. Key Points: Cindy and Merle provide insight regarding the true realities a new relationship encounters after the death of partner. We are able to see how their grief evolved and changed over the years. They have also channeled their grief experiences into other aspects of their life, especially their vocation, as they have dedicated their lives to volunteering and pursuing Chaplaincy paths to help others who are also grieving, especially grief from sudden and unexpected death. Every relationship will have their own unique challenges specific to the partners involved. However, there are themes that we saw today that I believe the overwhelming majority of all new couples will face. The previous partner who died will always be part of the relationship and their presence will impact the relationship as a whole and not only the individual who is grieving but the new partner, associated family members, children, friends, everyone. Whenever possible, I encourage you to consciously invite the deceased partner into in your relationship or include their presence in the relationship when appropriate. If the death of the individual who died becomes a taboo subject, if it is a topic that is uncomfortable, avoided, or swept under the rug then it will most likely become the root of friction or tension. Over time, this relationship will be much easier to manage and often their presence will fade into the background once it is acknowledged and integrated. Communication about grief, idealization, comparisons, or coping mechanisms in new relationships is important. Communication is the key to any relationship, but this communication is different, it can be so hard, but it is so essential. To learn more about the professional work and bereavement support programs that Cindy and Merle are involved in please visit our Facebook group “Talking about the podcast Untethered with Dr. Levin” where there is a link to their website and programs. Living with Cumulative Grief : An interview with Betty and Joey Dowling Hi everyone and welcome to Untethered: Healing the pain from a sudden death. I am Dr. Jennifer Levin, and I specialize in traumatic death and helping individuals through the struggles, pain, trauma, and chaos of an unexpected death. In today's podcast I interview mother and son, Betty and Joey Dowling, and we explore the concept of cumulative grief. When someone experiences multiple deaths, one right after one another, we refer to this phenomenon as cumulative grief because there is no time to process the grief from one loss, before the grief from the next death sets in. All of the sudden the emotions and grief from each death start to blend together. Today Betty and Joey share the story of the sudden death of Betty husband's and Joey's father Tom, and then later the expected deaths of Betty's two son's and Joey's brothers Kevin and Erik, who died less than two years apart. We also talk about some of the differences Betty and Joey noted in their grief when the death was sudden versus anticipated and what it has been like for them to continue living and healing after so much loss. Key Points: Whether death occurs in a sudden or unexpected nature or expected, cumulative grief is emotionally draining, and it intensifies complex emotions. The experience of cumulative grief can also be heightened by non-death losses including the loss of other relationships, finances, careers, health problems, and life transitions. Betty noted her challenges connecting to her husband's grief while caring for her son Kevin and then difficulty to grieve for Kevin while caring for Erik until finally everything just rolled into one. Joey explains how the cumulative losses amplified the number of grief triggers that he encountered, and that one trigger would resurface one memory that would lead to another memory, then another. As a result, he found himself cascaded with overwhelming memories of his dad and both of his brothers, constantly thinking about all his cumulative losses, all of the time. If you find yourself experiencing cumulative grief it can be beneficial to your healing to take some time to grieve each of your losses separately. I discuss the techniques that I use with clients who are struggling with cumulative grief. Death and loss, whether expected or unexpected, will always be a part of our life. I believe the key to living with cumulative grief are to understand how multiple losses impact us, to allow ourselves to feel and express the emotions and to continue to engage in life and keep loving throughout the entire process. Special Guest Adam Uris is back!  In this episode, Adam and Paul discuss The Preppy Murder, one of the most notorious trials in American history. In 1986 the body of recent high school graduate Jennifer Levin was found in Central Park. There was evidence that she had recently had intercourse and that she had been strangled.  The investigation quickly narrowed in on Robert Chambers, a 19 year old upper east sider.  Chambers was tall, handsome, put together, and quite possibly a sociopath.Listen as Adam and Paul break down the most sensational case in the United States until the OJ Simpson trial, laying out how the defense strategy of using the media worked to Chamber's advantage and how the prosecution's hands were tied perhaps a bit more than would be considered fair by a judge's routinely questionable rulings.  This case has it all, high society, sex, drugs, murder, media sensationalism, and Dorrians Red Hand , an upper east side staple for underage alcohol abuse for decades.

Research has proven that students are more successful when they feel safe, connected, and have a sense of belonging at school. However, indicators of student success are often centered around academic achievement, overlooking the importance of school climate in contributing to positive student outcomes. As children return to in-person learning after nearly two years of pandemic-related disruptions, Colorado must define a statewide vision for school climate that enables students to feel connected and achieve their goals.  We are back with a new episode of The West Steps! Today's conversation centers a first-ever topic on the podcast – school climate. We are joined by Leslie Colwell, V.P. for Education Initiatives at the Colorado Children's Campaign; Jennifer Levin, Director of Public Policy at The Arc of Colorado; and Veronica Bell, 3rd-grade teacher at KIPP Sunshine Peak Elementary and Teach Plus Colorado Policy Fellow. Our guests provide us with an overview of how school climate impacts the overall well-being and academic performance of students and the current work the School Climate Coalition is undertaking to create better learning environments for kids statewide. The discussion highlights the need to gather data that more adequately measures the school environments students are currently facing. These could include students sense of belonging, fair discipline practices, and behavioral health support. By gathering these data and making them publicly available, they can be used to help advance holistic policy solutions that create school climates in which students are eager to learn and thrive.  The School Climate Coalition is eager to elevate the voices of those closest to students. What a Creep: Alex Kelly Season 12, Episode 9 “The Preppy Rapist”  Alex Kelly was considered a golden boy in his hometown of Darien, CT. Born to a wealthy family and growing up in a peak New England fancy neighborhood (meaning rich & white) he was good-looking, athletic, and popular.  That all changed in February 1986 when the HS senior was arrested for suspicion of two rapes of girls in the span of four days.  The Dairen police and district attorney decided to charge and try him for both at the same time which worried his family that he was being railroaded. So Alex decided to take off for parts unknown rather than face the consequences. Nine years later he was caught and brought back to trial. His story is bat shit insane and remains so to this day.  He was dubbed “The Preppy Rapist” by the media much like Robert Chambers in 1986 was called “The Preppy Killer” for the killing of Jennifer Levin. The media works overtime to make white men likable. UGH! Trigger Warnings are sexual assault and delayed justice. Show notes & links available here. In this episode, I'm speaking to Dr. Jennifer Levin, a marriage and family therapist who specializes in health crises or transitions, especially related to traumatic grief and loss. We discuss ways to support others, particularly children, and promote growth after trauma. Big Ideas Traumatic grief is an unexpected, sudden loss that people experience. Sudden, devastating events can cause a great deal of grief, trauma, and stress. People experience post-traumatic growth when their life changes significantly for the better due to the experience they had with the trauma. There are four areas wherein people experience post-traumatic growth: deeper relationships increased personal strength positive spiritual changes stronger appreciation for life in general Kids and adults react differently to grief and trauma. Kids tend to float in and out, whereas adults may get stuck in deep sadness and experience more of the traumatic symptoms. The first thing to do for children after a traumatic loss is to assure safety and reestablish some normalcy and a sense of routine and structure. Helpful tools for kids are sensory-based activities, mindfulness skills, guided imagery, and visualizations. We can help them learn how to take control of their situation and give them positive feedback and praise when they use a great coping skill. Make sure children are exposed to positive relationships with other supportive adults in their lives. Especially in the case of loss, it is important for families to keep talking about their feelings. Memory Bowl Tip: keep a bowl and a stack of index cards in an accessible place. Any time you have a memory of the person, the dog, the loved one who has died, you write it down on the card and put it in the bowl. Then, when you're having a tough grieving day or on an occasion when the family is together, everyone can read the memories that are in the bowl. This is a great way to keep memories and family times together alive. Quotes Jennifer: "It's pretty amazing watching someone come in right after a loss, working through them to address both the trauma and grief and then having them say, 'Oh my goodness, I think I've grown in (this way)' and to be able to focus on that." Audrey: "Unfortunately, we are inevitably going to face grief of some kind. It's hopeful to think that it doesn't have to lead to disaster." Audrey: "Many of us have been blindsided by the experiences that kids share with us in the camp or school setting, where they share something really hard that they have gone through." Jennifer: "Right after an immediate loss that's been traumatic, the first thing to do is to assure safety, establish some normalcy and a sense of routine when the world feels chaotic and out of control." Jennifer: "We see behavioral problems come up, problems with sleep, academics, friends, when there is no routine or structure or normalcy." Jennifer: "Containment may not necessarily lead to post-traumatic growth, but more stabilization, which is the first thing we have to do before we can start addressing trauma and grief." Jennifer: "Post-traumatic growth is something that happens over a significant period of time and adults can play a huge role in decreasing the chances that a child will have longterm difficulties and increasing the chances for post-traumatic growth." Jennifer: "Sometimes we have to say, 'I'm not sure how this is going to play out in the future, but right now you are safe. I got you. You're okay. I love you. All of your needs can be met right now.' This gives them a really strong foundation for growth." Jennifer: "One thing that goes without saying is parents and adults have to take care of themselves first before they are able to give this to kids. Kids are able to tell when it's inauthentic, insincere, and when the parents are running on empty." Jennifer: "Positive relationships with adults help foster post-traumatic growth. If it's not a parent, then its a teacher, a coach, a religious figure." Jennifer: "Kids and adults react differently to grief and trauma. I think it's wonderful that kids can float in and out, in and out, and when they're in the moment, the feelings are intense, difficult, scary and overwhelming. But again, with the right support and encouragement, they're going to transition out and be okay." Jennifer: "We as adults have such a role in teaching our kids how to express themselves, how to get these feelings out, and then how to cope with them." Audrey: "Usually if a child is grieving about something, usually the adults who are closest to them are also grieving. Getting outside help is so important, even if your child appears to be fine. For them to be aware that these feelings may come up at any time and there are resources for them. That's a really important thing." Jennifer: "Grief is such a unique experience for every person, every family. Everybody in a family grieves differently. I'm really big on acknowledgment, an adult acknowledging that they're sad or grieving, that they're fearful--that's the very first step." Jennifer: "Acknowledge the pain. I think it's great for your kids to see you cry. It's great for them to see you express emotion and for you to say, 'Mom is really sad right now, but I'm okay. You're okay and we're going to be okay.' Then talk about that." Jennifer: "Checking in is important because it gives the message, 'I'm here if you want to talk and if you don't, that's okay.' So what you do is monitor other things: Are they socializing with their friends? Are they doing well in school? Are they sleeping? Are they eating? Are they doing extracurricular activities? When you start to see issues there, then that's a red flag. Even though they're not talking about the grief, it's definitely impacting them." Jennifer: "We grieve the way we live. If we're someone who doesn't share our feelings very often, then when we experience grief we are not all of a sudden going to become someone who talks about all of our feelings." Audrey: "Keep talking about the person. Some people think it's better not to bring the person up but the last thing that someone who is grieving wants is for people to forget the person who was so important to them."   Links More information on Dr. Jennifer Levin's private practice can be found at therapyheals.com. The Preppy Murder is Sundance's five-part look at the murder of Jennifer Levin by Robert Chambers, and how it gripped New York City for years starting in August of 1986. Guest Piper Weiss and I remember those headlines well, but the miniseries corrects our memory on some points -- though we're still not sure why this is coming out now, or why Linda Fairstein's participation isn't asterisked in some way. In the Cold Case section, Piper and I revisit one segment of Zeman and Mills's Killer Legends, with Piper theorizing on why the "call coming from inside the house" urban legend gained traction and both of us recommending Zeman's Cropsey. We also talk about ghost apps, snack diplomacy, and more in The Blotter Presents, Episode 120. Jennifer Levin is a millennial and was faced with the shocking news at 32; she had to put her father in a nursing facility because of his Parkinson's disease. At the time, she was heavily focused on her career and living in a different state than her father. sShe felt terribly alone and isolated during that time because none of her peers could relate. Jennifer shares her experience on what it was like caring for her father as a millennial. when her career was just starting to blossom.   Key Takeaways: [1:05] Jennifer was 32 when she realized her father’s illness was more serious than what she thought it was. [7:05] How do the experiences of a millenial caregiver differ from somebody who is a bit older? [10:25] It becomes really hard to care for someone when you are still single and dating, which a lot of millennials still are. [11:15] It was tough for Jennifer because her career was just launching and she just started living independently (no roommates) when she found out her father needed extra care. [18:45] At work, Jennifer didn’t really tell work about her caregiving status. How did Jennifer handle her work and life responsibilities? [24:40] Millennials aren’t talking about elder care, so Jennifer felt very alone and isolated in her journey when her father was sick. [29:40] Because social media portrays a certain level of ‘life’s perfect’ it was hard for Jennifer to find other people in her situation. This is why she created The Caregivers Collective so that people can support each other. [32:15] Jennifer has noticed that millennial caregivers turn their knowledge into a career because they don’t want to let their resources go to waste and have people go through the same thing they went through. [36:20] When Jennifer was going through this journey, work didn't feel like a priority anymore and it made her realize what was really important in her life. [42:15] What are the upsides to being a younger caregiver? [43:35] How can we better support millennial caregivers?   Mentioned in This Episode: Thecaregiverscollective.com I Became My Father’s Parent at 32 The Working Daughter book
