On the morning of August 26, 1986, a cyclist in New York's Central Park discovered the body eighteen-year-old Jennifer Levin. Among other things, Levin had been strangled, there were superficial injuries on her face, and her shirt was pulled up. Later, the medical examiner reported that Jennifer had died only about an hour before she was discovered. It didn't take long for investigators to find Levin's assailant, after several patrons at a nearby bar reported seeing her with a man the night before. That man turned out to be nineteen-year-old Robert Chambers Jr., a privileged members of New York's Upper East Side high society. At first, Chambers denied having anything to do with the murder, but soon changed his story and claimed Levin had died during consensual “rough sex” initiated by Levin herself.Nicknamed the “The Preppy Killer” by the press, a reference to his good looks and obvious privilege, Chambers' trial became a media circus. Over the course of more than a year, people around the country watched as the defense tried—and with the help of the press, succeeded—to put the responsibility for Levin's murder on the victim, emphasizing her sexual history and manner of dress, among other things. In this episode, Mynaa and I discuss The Repairer of Reputations, the first story in Robert Chambers' collection, The King in Yellow. Concepts in Chambers work contributed to the creation of the 'weird fiction' genre, and remain influential on media today - including the King in Yellow, the notion of a book that can drive you mad, and names such as Carcossa and the Hyades. We've delved into the topic of madness quite thoroughly on the podcast recently, so it only seemed fitting to continue the discussion through to the Halloween episode. Our topics include a broader discussion of madness and society, the unreliable narration of the protagonist, how his delusional fantasies reflect his political madness, the "lethal chamber" and its meaning, and much more. "Let the red dawn surmise / What we shall do, / When the blue starlight dies / And all is through." This short poem, an epigraph to "The Yellow Sign," arguably the most memorable tale in Robert W. Chambers' 1895 collection The King in Yellow, encapsulates in four brief lines the affect that drives cosmic horror: the fearful sense of imminent annihilation. In the four stories JF and Phil discuss in this episode, this affect, which would inspire a thousand works of fiction in the twentieth century, emerges fully formed, dripping with the xanthous milk of Decadence. What's more, it is here given a symbol, a face, and a home in the Yellow Sign, the Pallid Mask of the Yellow King, and the lost land of Carcosa. Come one, come all. In this special episode of the IDS Between the Lines podcast, IDS Research Fellow Stephen Thompson and IDS Research Officer Mariah Cannon interview pioneering Researcher Robert Chambers. For years, international development has traditionally been dominated by ‘experts' in the global North telling ‘poor people' in the global South how their lives could be improved. Robert's writing and thinking, however revolutionised the discipline, inspiring both participatory processes and a more inclusive practice. This podcast is released to coincide with publication of the recent archive collection of the IDS Bulletin which a celebration of Robert's contribution to the journal over the last five decades. In the interview Robert talks about the importance of workshops and talking to people to further research ideas; How his work has changed from focusing on rural development to more urban development. He also talks about his early time in Kenya in the late 1950's and going back four years ago to see how much has changed with regards to technology and connectivity. This interview is a fascinating insight into Robert's career, his publishing legacy with the IDS Bulletin and a history lesson on how development research has evolved over the last 50 years. In August 1986, 18-year-old Jennifer Levin was found dead in Central Park after a night out. She had been attacked and strangled. When the police questioned Robert Chambers, the young man who was seen leaving a bar with Jennifer, he had injuries that indicated he'd been in a fight. Chambers eventually admitted to killing Jennifer but claimed it happened on accident after Jennifer injured him during “rough sex.” Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Robert Chambers and the murder of Jennifer Levin. This case gained the national spotlight. It happened in New York City, and Chambers was given the name the Preppy Killer. But, what grabbed the attention of many was that Robert Chambers claimed that Jennifer Levin was the aggressor and actually sexually assaulted him. Robert changed his story a number of times, often, it seems to conform to the known facts of the case. You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital productionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Special Guest Adam Uris is back!  In this episode, Adam and Paul discuss The Preppy Murder, one of the most notorious trials in American history. In 1986 the body of recent high school graduate Jennifer Levin was found in Central Park. There was evidence that she had recently had intercourse and that she had been strangled.  The investigation quickly narrowed in on Robert Chambers, a 19 year old upper east sider.  Chambers was tall, handsome, put together, and quite possibly a sociopath.Listen as Adam and Paul break down the most sensational case in the United States until the OJ Simpson trial, laying out how the defense strategy of using the media worked to Chamber's advantage and how the prosecution's hands were tied perhaps a bit more than would be considered fair by a judge's routinely questionable rulings.  This case has it all, high society, sex, drugs, murder, media sensationalism, and Dorrians Red Hand , an upper east side staple for underage alcohol abuse for decades.
