Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell   Bio: Jason Zook (formerly Jason SurfrApp, Headsetdotcom & Jason Sadler) is an unconventional marketer and entrepreneur. He created IWearYourShirt, a company that used sponsored t-shirts to promote businesses on social media and in 2012 and 2013, he auctioned off his last name to the highest bidders. Jason recently wrote a book about his entrepreneurial journey, but in a very unique way. Frustrated by the confusing landscape of book publishers and book agents, Jason self-published and raised over $75,000 through sponsorships in his book Creativity For Sale before a single word was written or a single copy of the book sold.   Tired of living a life that felt prescribed to him by society, Jason SurfrApp used his out-of-the-box thinking and ingenuity to create multiple profitable Internet-based businesses. Jason is a public speaker, an entrepreneur at heart, lives a life of intention, and continues to strive to make a living doing what he loves.

Great show today with Marc Mawhinney of Natural Born Coaches. With Natural Born Coaches, he helps other coaches build their businesses through his podcast and services. Utopia was hard for Marc to define. It has changed over the years. His Utopia is living a life that makes him happy and is on his terms. Utopian Quotes of the Show "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning, goes to bed at night, and gets up and loves what he wants to do" - Bob Dylan He has changed his life around to a more balanced life that is on his terms since he was younger. He started at 21 in real estate and for 20 years built up a successful real estate company. He used to work crazy hours and spent plenty of time working until late at night (does this sound like any of you?). He thought that’s what he wanted but has since realized that that wasn’t his Utopia. His son, who is now 6, changed his thought of what a Utopia is. He has always had the issue of “chasing the rainbow” and has always had a hard time to stop and appreciate what he has. After staying clean of stumbles and achieving consistent success for some time, then stumbling greatly in 2008 with the real estate market crash, that money and status were low priorities in life. This humbling experience had a great impact on him. Just like other Build Your Utopia guests, he realized that quality of life, not money and status were more important. Check out these books that Marc recommends: The 1 thing with Gary Keller No BS Time Management by Dan Kennedy Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Goodbye Gordon Gekko: How to Find Your Fortune without Losing Your Soul by Anthony Scaramucci The Obstacle is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumphs by Ryan Holiday The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure by Grant Cardone Currently like many of you, Marc is working towards having a lifestyle business that allows him to focus on what's most important, his son, his family, and himself. Nothing delights him more than being able to relax and play Lego Batman with his son. To Marc, using your time wisely with focus is his key to success and maintaining a work-life balance.

Learn to say “no” to people, personally and in business. The 3 Value Bombs for Utopians: Don’t sweat the small stuff Change is good Be bold. Don’t play small and be conservative 2nd Utopian Quote of the Show! "Don’t sweat the small stuff. Nothing is life and death." - Marc Mawhinney Inspired by Build Your Utopia and past guests, he just changed his name to Marc Redbull inspired by past guest Jason Surfrapp (if you haven't listened to this show, you really should). Click here to listen!   Thanks again to Marc for being on the show! Check out Natural Born Coaches which has links to him on social media, info on his coaching programs, and podcast training products (he shows people how to start a podcast in a month! We wish we knew about it before we started up.). His podcast show has become an immediate hit – making it into iTunes “New & Noteworthy” category in its first week of release and greatly exceeding the average downloads for new podcasts.  The show can be found at Natural Born Coaches  on iTunes, or on Stitcher. Marc is on a mission to help coaches spread their message and their value to as many people as possible! As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!

This is our first official show of 2015! We did have a bonus show yesterday... Check it out here if you haven't. This week we published a great episode with Jason Surfrapp, an entrepreneur, speaker, a just all-around awesome dude. What's great about him is how zany his ideas seem but really they are innovative and "out of the box", all credit to Jason and his uncanny ability to identify unique ideas. Creating unique ideas is just one thing. We can all do that. What makes him such an awesome guy is how he is able to come up with such unique ideas and take them into action. I Wear Your Shirt was a success only because of Jason, not just because of the idea behind it. His hard work, determination, and effort drove the business to a wild success. If you haven't heard this past Tuesday's show, you must! Learn more about his business selling “talking, walking billboards”. Here were some of the topics that we discussed in today's episode inspired by this week's guest: 1. No one retires from a job that they love There are so many men and women that are working in jobs during their senior years that are jobs that they have no passion in. That doesn't mean it has to be you or anyone else. Josh's dad is a prime example of this. Josh's dad is an accomplished retired Army Veteran that retired at the top rank of Command Sargeant Major. Currently as he waits for his pension to kick in, Josh's dad is working hard as a field technician in his 50s to make a living. You can hear more about Josh's story in the episode. 2. Most people follow the same path Ben in particular has been inspired by all the guests that have been successful in creating their own paths. Utopians, you can create your own path as well. 3. College really sucked the entrepreneur out of me Ben and Josh talk about how many colleges today do not focus enough on encouraging entrepreneurial activity and instead prepare young adults for life in corporate cultures. This is unfortunate because forging an entreprenurial path can be achieved by anyone. Josh and Ben even go as far back as talking about how grade school could incorporate some entrpreneurial lessons as well so young adults have "out of the box" mindsets when they make the big decisions they will make in their young adults lives on what professions they will hone in on. Utopian Quote of the Show If you put in part time effort you get part time results - Jason Surfrapp This quote was from this past week's episode with Jason but it was such a powerful quote, that it is today's Utopian Quote of the Show too. Another topic discussed in today's episode was taking a "social media detox". This means cutting social media out of your life completely for a set amount of time. When Jason did this, he came up with a myriad of business ideas! It could be powerful for you too. Ben would have no problem taking a "social media detox". Josh on the other hand spends a lot of time on Facebook in particular participating in business groups that have given him and his business a ton of value. This is discussed in great detail in today's show. Finally, Josh and Ben discuss each of Jason's rapid-fire tips for Utopians: 1. Take a step back and look at your life’s foundation The way Josh and Ben see this tip is to be humble, thankful, and appreciate the little things in life. 2. Understand that you are going to make mistakes and screw things up Forgive yourself when you make mistakes (which is going to happen) and take action instead of letting fears hold you back. Obstacles, like fears, are often just illusions. Keep this in mind, Utopians! 3. Be willing to do something different Think out of the box like Jason to achieve your professional goals in corporate cultures or in entrepreneurship. If you are striving for a promotion, go make suggestions, be innovative, take up responsibilities that are extra duties, stand out and BE DIFFERENT. If you are an entreprenuer, differentiate yourself from your competition by incorporating "out of the box" marketing or just by taking an idea and turning it into action, which that alone is being different than the majority of people out there that have ideas that go nowhere. Check out this show and please leave your comments below! As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!

Build Your Utopia

Jason Surfrapp is an incredible guest that we were very fortunate to have on Build Your Utopia. He was able to build a name for himself as an entrepreneur by being sponsored to wearing branded t-shirts. His motivation for being a successful entrepreneur is to have control and freedom. Who wouldn’t want that for his or her life? Eh? Like many of you reading this, Jason didn’t start with entrepreneur dreams and didn’t even consider being an entrepreneur feasible for a very long time. He followed the common path of going to college, finishing his degree, and getting a corporate job. After joining “corporate America”, he learned fairly quickly that grinding out every day was not for him. He collaborated with a colleague and started up a design company, which allowed him to leave “corporate America”. This business also quickly grossed up to $250K in revenue. Shortly after attaining immediate entrepreneurial success, Jason had a thought. With the popularity of social media, he saw an opportunity to create a new type of advertising on social media. As he was brainstorming this notion, he was staring at his closet and saw about 50 branded shirts and that’s when he had his “Aha!” moment. He realized there could be an opportunity to promote brands on t-shirts on social media. He even took this idea to Seth Godin (inspired to reach out to him because of Seth’s book Purple Cow), who actually responded (in about an hour after an email sent too). Seth responded that he didn’t feel that the idea would fly, which only fueled Jason’s determination to turn this wild idea into a success. So, he started it up and he made $84K his first year selling advertising for $1+ per day for Jason to promote companies by wearing their logos on t-shirts and promoting them on social media. Jason is an advocate for living a life free of.. social media. Yes, although he created a business off social media, he believes in the value of “detoxing” from social media. If you are reading this, you should consider taking a 30 day social media detox. Jason highly recommends it and when he did it, he was able to come up with a gob of business ideas with the extra time and focus. Jason has also become an avid reader since picking up Purple Cow. (he even said in our interview that the last book he read before Purple Cow was Go, Dog, Go) Currently, he’s juggling several books, including: Re-Work Sketch Notes Handbook Bullet Proof Diet Insanely Simple One wise tip that Jason left with Utopians during our interview was to get advice as early as possible, ask for help, and stop trying to figure everything out on your own. Jason feels that if he would have done that sooner, he could have accomplished more sooner. However, at the end of the day, at least learn from your decisions, experiences, and mistakes. Jason’s 3 tips for Utopians include: Take a step back and look at your life’s foundation Understand that you are going to make mistakes and screw things up Be willing to do something different I highly recommend listening to the show to hear Jason’s in-depth explanations for the above 3 tips. Don’t miss this show. Thanks again to Jason Surfrapp for being on Build Your Utopia. Two of my favorite topics of discussion are the over-connection world we live in and how to intentionally cultivate creativity in our lives. Jason and I dove headfirst into both of those topics as well as many others. And I couldn't think of a better person which whom to have this particular discussion. Jason SurfrApp is hands-down one of the most brilliant people I know. I'm privileged to call him a friend and this conversation is definitely in my top 5 of the first 4 episodes of TGM. Wait… Who knows what he really does at the Jason HQ, but officially, he's a entrepreneur, best-selling author, creative thinker and a self-described “action taker and unconventional marketer”. I loved Jason's take on business, social media, finding balance and meaning on our lives and businesses. Here are some of my favorite bits from the show: On being over-connected and addicted to social media “There were so many big companies that came to me and wanted to give me thousands of dollars if I could just come with a creative way that we could work together and I couldn't come up with singe idea, because my brain was so taxed.” “You don't need to be on Facebook and Twitter to grow a business. We all built businesses before social media.” “Everything is cyclical. Facebook will not be around for ever. Something new will come along.” “I really believe social media is the next addiction. It's the next cigarette, the next alcohol. We are literally going to have an entire network of social media doctors and therapists trying to wean people off this stuff and we just don't realize it because it's so new. I don't think people understand the dopamine releases when we constantly check our likes, comments, etc.” On finding your “one true passion” “So much of what I tried to do in the last year and half was, find my passion, find my purpose. I wanted this direction for myself and this *one thing* that I was so good at. But that's the thing, I'm not that way. I'm not good at one thing. I'm good at a lot of random stuff … but it all cobbles together” “I'm not going to worry about how all these things thread together perfectly. That's kind of what everyone tells you, you need your thing, your niche. Ok, I agree. But for some people, you may not find that thing for 10 years.” On cultivating creativity: “When anyone can get themselves into a state where they're not worried about the criticism of other people … [great things can happen].“ “If you feel the resistance to something that's so strong that it's like, there's no way I can do this … you need it more than you know.” “I think the first 5 to 15 minutes of your day is the most important part of your day. It's when my best creative thinking happens.” “Intentionally start your day with something that makes you happy.” What's really important in business “Everyone should try things. Listen to your gut and try new things.” “I throw the stick. There are a lot of people who hold the stick and stare at all the different directions and do know where to through it. I just throw the stick an go after it.” “Every business needs two phases: preparation and then effort.” “I want a much smaller list of incredibly high quality people. I was so obsessed with the numbers of things. I've realized that it really does not serve you. What you need is the high quality, the low-number

**UPDATE: Download Jason's new book, Creativity for Sale for FREE here: www.creativityforsale.com/radical EPISODE 34: Jason SurfrApp sold off his last name to the highest bidder twice, making over $100,000 in the process. If you listen to what prompted him to come up with and execute this wild idea (besides the profit), you won't judge him for selling out. Before that, he founded IWearYourShirt.com, a company where clients paid him to wear t-shirts and which generated over $1,000,000 in revenue. He also made a big chunk of cash by getting 20o+ sponsors for his new book, CREATIVITY FOR SALE (currently $13 on Amazon, but available FREE  to download for Radical Tribe listeners). I have a casual yet very interesting conversation with Jason where we chat about various topics, from his beginnings as an entrepreneur to coming up with crazy business ideas and profiting from them.  Here's what you will learn in this case study: Why and how he sold off his last name - twice. How Jason and his partner landed Kanye West as a client for their graphic design company. How Jason came up with and started IWearYourShirt.com and built it to an 8-person business that generated over a million dollars in revenue. How to come up with a business idea - do you start from the problem or solution? A method to his madness: how Jason follows a structured process to come up with and test wild ideas. The number 1 tip you implement to be more creative. Key principles for successful pricing. Why you shouldn't emulate or copy anyone while building a brand, and what you should do. Jason's biggest mistake, and how you can avoid this no matter what type of business you're building. How he structured his pitch to potential sponsors for the 'Sponsor My Book' project for his book, Creativity for Sale. What happened when he started tearing down personal walls and shared authentically with his audience, and why you should do this with your audience as well. Key Actions you can take to start a business based on your interest and passions.

Welcome to episode #416 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I had heard of Jason SurfrApp before, only that wasn't his name. The last time I had heard of him, his name was Jason Headsetsdotcom (not kidding). That right, Jason had done this before. He had legally changed his last name to the highest bidder... and he had done it again. Call it a stunt. Call it unconventional, but Jason has a knack for this kind of marketing... or entrepreneurship (depends on how you slice it). He created IWearYourShirt, a company that used sponsored t-shirts to promote businesses on social media and turned it into a million dollar business (not a typo). He took the same approach to the recent publishing of his business book, Creativity For Sale. Frustrated by the landscape of book publishers and book agents, Jason self-published and raised over $75,000 through sponsorships in the book before a single word was written or a single copy of the book sold. If you know anything about book advances and business book sales numbers, that's not a bad amount (at all). The Unmarketing hero, Scott Stratten, took to Facebook to record a video about how personalized Jason's pitch to Scott was. Stratten's video was so compelling that I invited Jason to talk about how he sees marketing, and what stunts look like in a world with so much noise. Enjoy the conversation... AuthorMBA: Conversations About Book Marketing, Publishing, Author Platforms, and Other Business Strategies for Authors

By today's standards, "build marketing into your book" has become common business advice for authors. There are, of course, a bajillion ways to go about doing that, some more effective than others. Jason Sadler, now Jason SurfrApp of IWearYourShirt.com fame, has embraced that logic in a mind-blowing way: he has a sponsor for every page in his book as well as the covers (front and back) and inside flaps. That may sound off-putting (yuck, too many sponsors!). But Jason is a seasoned professional on nurturing and integrating sponsorship relationships into consumer product experiences that are tastefully done, align with the message, and add value to the overall experience. In fact, Jason's entire book project for 'Creativity that Sales' is a wild, show-me-the-proof way of teaching how to blend creativity with business in a way that doesn't suck for the consumer. Jason's project—and entire approach and personality—is far more than just these promotions. In our chat, we explore how he's using this one-of-a-kind book project to begin a new chapter in his career as a creative professional, including future aspirations for "authorship." Join us as we delve into the truly extraordinary for author and publishing professionals. After the show, find us on Twitter @WinningEdits or #authormba with your questions and comments. Enjoy!
