Zvi Band describes himself as an introvert—someone who tends to be inward-looking, generally preferring to spend time alone. At the same time, he’s a successful entrepreneur, writer, and speaker who preaches the importance of relationships. “I actually found that all of my business, and more importantly, all of the amazing opportunities in my life came from, of all things, knowing the right people,” Band says. That may not sound like something an introvert would say, but for Band, human connection is about quality over quantity. He isn’t focused on collecting new friends on social media or passing out stacks of business cards at mixers all over town. Instead, he is focused on maintaining and nurturing the relationships he already has. That, he says, is the key to success. Yes, it’s all about relationships, but in a world of constant connectivity, it’s about focusing on the meaningful ones. “I was in a room of a hundred real estate agents this morning and everyone raised their hand when I asked, ‘Who here thinks their relationships are their most important assets for business?’” The power of relationships is more than a philosophy for Band; it’s his business. His enterprise SaaS platform, Contactually, helps professionals, particularly real estate professionals, build and maintain relationships by automating personal communication. A resident of Washington, DC, he’s been named one of Washingtonian Magazine’s Tech Titans six years running, and has been featured in publications like TechCrunch, Washington Post and USA Today. He’s even written a book on the topic, Success Is in Your Sphere: Leverage the Power of Relationships to Achieve Your Business Goals. Why Are Relationships So Important? Band understands that humans are naturally social creatures, and the biological need for connection translates directly to the business world. He sees that as an opportunity to build success through the support of a professional network. “We rely on social connections and relationships to help keep us safe and therefore help us identify who we should work with,” he says. To Band, relationships are directly connected to reputation, something that has become either an asset or a hindrance, depending on how people view you as a professional. Because the world is so connected, professionals are now competing with other professionals with the same skills on a global scale. The only way to differentiate, he believes, is through reputation. “Because no one can fully copy you. So that reputation and your ability to maintain that reputation ended up becoming us.” How does a good reputation resonate in the business world? Through the relationships professionals build. Band points to a study of banking customers in Germany and the relationship they have with their bank. “They found that when a customer is referred by another customer, there’s a 25% higher contribution rate, so referred customers become better.” Relationships Paved His Own Career Path Band started out as a software developer, eventually leading a team at an intelligence agency. In 2009, he struck out on his own, creating a software design and development firm called skeevisArts. It was there that he started thinking more about relationships and how they can make or break a career—or a company. But he also found that maintenance and development of those relationships was tough. “I would meet people for coffee and two weeks later completely forget who they were. So, a lesson learned for me was, ‘Okay, well, what’s the right thing to do, here? Well, how can I solve this with software? How can software help us build and maintain better relationships?’” And that’s how Contactually started. With the help of fellow co-founder Jeff Carbonella, he developed a platform to organize and automate personal contacts in order to maintain and build relationships that he knew were so critical. They brought on Tony Cappaert as the third co-founder to lead business development. Both Cappaert and Carbonella were connections Band already had. Carbonella was a lead engineer at Band’s consulting firm, and he had gotten to know Cappaert through the local community. He started small, not really thinking about building a company but more fleshing out an idea. They initially decided to focus on real estate agents, who rely heavily on relationships to sell homes and build their business. In 2011, they were chosen to participate in the 500 Startups accelerator program, where they raised their first venture capital. “We quite literally had an apartment with three mattresses on the floor,” Band says, laughing. Over the course of eight years, however, the company has raised $12 million in venture capital. It now has, according to Band’s personal site, “tens of thousands of customers, including eight of the top 20 real estate brokerages in the country.” And Band practices what he preaches. To this day, he uses his own tool to maintain his professional relationships, keep up with current and potential investors, recruit new talent, and stay connected to the media and important influencers. He even used it to develop a relationship with Compass, the national real estate company that acquired Contactually in 2019. “Robert , the CEO, knew me well enough that he had absolutely no problem reaching out to me to say, ‘Hey would you be interested in a potential partnership?’ And that’s an  important thing, right? It’s not like companies just get sold overnight.” Band now using all he’s learned about relationship building to mentor a new generation of entrepreneurs. In 2010, he founded MadeInDC, which markets startups in the DC area and helps entrepreneurs get started. He is a co-founder and co-organizer of DC Tech Meetup, one of the largest tech meetups in the country. And he created DC Tech Summer, where over 550 interns apply to work at tech startups in the area. That’s a lot of new, powerful relationships that Band is out there, helping to form. Not bad for an introvert. Key Lessons in Nurturing Relationships Throughout his career, Band has learned some valuable lessons about harnessing the power of relationships. He shared some of them with us. On Starting a Business Band tried to start a few companies before his success with Contactually, while he was still running his consulting firm. None of them really took off, and he realized it was because he was working on his own and only on the side. He wasn’t committing to their success. This was true of nStructo, a backend-as-a-service tool he tried to get off the ground. “With nStructo, we had no customers, we had no users, we had no team. It was just me. So it almost could exist in my head or it could shut down in my head and no one would know and no one would care. And so I knew that I needed to have a team around me.” He realized how much he needed that team to keep him accountable and give him the discipline to invest time in his next startup venture. On Identifying the Right Relationships While cultivating relationships is the name of the game, Band stressed the importance of identifying the right relationships first. To do that, he says, you first have to identify your goals, which will lead you to the right people to reach out to. He learned that the hard way when networking for his consulting firm. “So, for example,” Band says, “I used to think that going to a lot of tech meetups and developer meetups was a great way of doing business.” But Band had to find companies in need of software services, not other developers. “I was looking to work with a lot of design agencies, so I would go to design meetups and pitch myself as a software consultant. I would go to marketing meetups.” By clarifying his goals, he found the right people to reach out to. On Cold Outreach While Band stresses the importance of cultivating current relationships, he does see merit in cold outreach to expand a network. But, he cautions, a generic or overly produced message will fall flat on your audience. “Everyone is used to getting slammed with cold emails,” he says. “Therefore, if you write a cold email that actually stands out, or if you do it via LinkedIn or you do a handwritten card, or something that says okay...this person genuinely wants to talk to me or be of value to me, then I’ve actually found that people are pretty receptive.” Also, he says, make the contact short and sweet. An email, for example should be no more than a few sentences that engage your contact directly. Asking a simple question of your prospect rather than talking solely about yourself can draw them in and send the message that you’re interested in a conversation. Many sellers assume that experience makes them good at building valuable relationships, but there's an art to tactically leveraging relationships to land your biggest customers.   Zvi Band is the co-founder and CEO of Contactually, a relationship-oriented CRM designed to help businesses build and maintain relationships with their networks. He was an introvert in college who hardly ever left his room, but that was before he discovered that relationships would be his best asset. He is the author of the book Success is in Your Sphere.   Sharpen your tools   Zvi recognized the need for Contactually because he would connect with people and then lose track of them and miss the opportunity. It wasn't that he was doing a bad job. He was simply so focused on working hard for his existing clients that he lost touch.   To measure the strength of your network, he recommends opening any social media tool and considering whether your network would come to your side if you asked for something simple like $20. Then, if you truly believe your relationships are your most important asset, what are you actually doing to nurture those relationships those won't pay dividends next week but might in the coming months or years?   For most people, the answer is, “Not too much.”   Tactically leverage relationships   The goal should be to build and nurture personal, authentic relationships without any necessary plan or intent. Then, they'll call us when they're ready to buy. Or if we call them, they'll pick up the phone.    The problem is that sometimes, we aren't necessarily sure who is important in our relationships or what our goals are. We must begin by figuring out what we're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to increase the number of referrals? Increase your close rate or your repeat business? Looking for an entirely different job or different career steps?    Clearly identify your goals and then develop everything else to ladder up to those goals.    Always take a step back and ask what you're really trying to do.    Nurture opportunities    If you're going to conferences and meetings, you're likely trying to nurture the opportunities that emerge there. But rather than connecting with everyone there, determine who is there and who you should be working with. For Zvi, that intentional decision shifted who he engaged with when he went to those events.    The worst thing we can do is walk in with a set of business cards and have conversations that will never turn into anything real for either party. Those business cards get lost in the washer and you've wasted time that could have gone to people you could truly serve.    Once you've identified who you want to connect with, develop a cadence to make sure you're staying top of mind. Follow their social media and watch for news about their company. Don't be afraid to tell your connections that you're simply working to stay in touch.    Value and service   Don't assume follow-up is most important. Focus on value and being of service to someone. The best way we can get what we want in life is by helping others get what they want. That way, as soon as the moment comes where your contact needs what you have, he'll immediately think of you.    When Zvi was nurturing sales opportunities with large brokerages, he wasn't necessarily trying to pitch them on the value of software. Understand more about the prospect's business. Work to understand challenges and identify other existing customers who experienced the same issues.    Work to show your prospect that you aren't simply trying to get a dollar. You're trying to build a successful relationship that will ultimately benefit both of you.    “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” -- Zig Ziglar   Technological age   Technology allows us to connect with so many different people, but the problem is that it does the same for everyone else. That means your customers are being flooded with other ideas and messages. We have to find a way to build personal, authentic relationships.    Realize that being a nice guy isn't enough to produce business opportunities for you. People have to know what you're looking for.    Zvi recalls that he was looking for a CPA recently and one of his friends mentioned that a guy they know well was a CPA. Though he knew the guy well, he wasn't aware that he was a CPA. Make sure your audience understands the skills you bring to the table.    Relationships assets   What strategies are you willing to put in place to grow this relationship asset? After all, these assets are just like the dollars in our bank account. We can invest in the asset. It can go up or down. We have to put strategies in place to make sure we're growing that asset.    There was a time when “always be closing” was the mantra. Now, though, our role has switched to a subscription based business so it isn't just about selling. It's about building and nurturing a relationship. Reputation matters and referrals matter.    If a company brings on a customer that won't result in a successful relationship, that's bad for everyone involved. We aren't just trying to get a deal; we're trying to get a partner. #SalesPartner   Capital strategy   The best thing you can do is ensure you have time to build relationships. That can be as simple as blocking time in your calendar to build relationships. You don't respond to email or text during that time. You nurture authentic relationships with people who aren't at the top of your inbox.    Consistent. Establish a strategy and do it regularly.  Aggregated. Collect all your relationships in one place like CRM or spreadsheet. Prioritizing. Identify which relationships are most relevant. Investigate. Gain intelligence into your relationships.  Timely. Make sure you're staying in touch over a certain amount of time. Adding value. Don't simply follow up.  Leverage. Do whatever you can to make it simple.    The CAPITAL strategy ties them all together with a bow. It allows us to understand how all these parts connect together.    Long-term numbers   Avoid the temptation to focus solely on numbers. If you're going to think about them, focus on long-term numbers. Analyze, pick apart.  Understand why something happened based on the decisions you made They are tactical 5x7 notepad -- Take blank sheet and write the exact things you need to do each day Weekly wrap up -- Capture what happened Use a daily journal to understand how you felt at that moment "It's way too easy to be reactionary."  It's not productive.  Be thoughtful and intentional Zvi at 25 years old: Quit his job His dad's cancer came back and he died The same day was officially declared a recession in 2008 How to respond? Zvi was interested in a startup "I emailed my network, and the CTO of an enterprise software company helped me out" "Relationships are our most important asset" Zvi realized he wasn't good at managing his relationships.  He was using Evernote. He wanted a proactive CRM (customer relationship management) tool to proactively work for the relationship driven professional That was how Contactually was created "It's not about staying in touch.  It's about being of value." How to make the right hiring decisions: It's values based: Be user first - solve problems for others Ownership - entrepreneur types Learn & innovate - embrace failure and learn Demonstrate the ability to learn Be excellent with each other -- "If a company has a named 'No Asshole' rules then that usually means they have a lot of assholes there."  It's a red flag. Keep it simple Be real -- Transparent How does someone demonstrate the ability to learn? Run a mock call, give feedback.  They must be coachable.  How do they respond to the coaching? Ask, 'what are you learning? We want readers We want people who are intellectually curious We want people who have a "general dissatisfaction with their current skill set." Mentor advice: Leverage your experience to know the right questions to ask. Teach them how to navigate the issues, don't just give them the answers. "Relay experience.  Don't give advice."  Don't give a prescription. Mentee advice: Establish a feedback loop Establish what to do -- follow up "Must show that you took their insights to heart and acted on them." The 'icky' feeling of relationship marketing: Avoid this.  Don't just exchange business cards. "Relationships are our most important asset." Collect intelligence on those people important to you.  Listen for the little details they share.  Pay attention.  Take notes after you talk with them so you can ask about them later. Consistency - Play the long game: Create habits:  what are your relationship goals? "We're wired to think short term."  Zag when others zig.  Think long term. Live or die? Not too long ago our ability to survive directly correlated to our ability to develop relationships with our families and local tribes. In modern times-- and especially in business, our ability to develop relationships can mean the difference between thriving and losing out. We are biologically wired to be social creatures, and so it seems that building networks should come naturally. But, our prehistoric system is able to handle no more than 100 relationships, 50 semi-effectively, and in the last decade the number of accessible people and the ease of connection has increased exponentially. Now you can be in touch with tens of thousands of people. This is a bit more than we are designed to meaningfully manage. To discover the new questions and solutions around business relationship management, Bruce Holoubek, owner of Contracted Leadership, and Host of The Development Exponent Podcast talks to Zvi Band, the Founder of Contactually, a relationship-oriented CRM company. The company grew to eight figures in revenue and to a team of 70 before being acquired. Zvi Band is also the Author of Success is in Your Sphere, a book cataloging his success with Contactually, that also acts as a guide to effectively using the CRM. The primary challenges for maintaining relationships are always, knowing whom to talk to, when to talk to them, and what to say that will show our value, which will allow us to maintain the relationship. But, the fundamental, and often most difficult challenge that we are all faced with is that we are all wired for short term benefits. If we weren't, we would choose to act how “future us” would act; we would eat that salad instead of the burger, we would save that dollar instead of online shop. Likewise, in the business world we are focused on what is immediately in front of us, and on what is going to fill that quota or sale today or tomorrow, not four years from now. It's easy to look backward and say that we received a benefit or job because of someone we knew, but when we have the choice to focus on the immediate or on calling a former client and checking in with them, we choose to deal with urgent matters at hand. This is where technology, such as a CRM system can help set reminders to reach out. When relationships matter to us, it's not just the relationships with our clients. It's the relationships with our teams, employees, partners, and vendors. Companies that successfully execute on relationship management are evident in how their employees and contractors rate them on review sites like Glass Door. Here are some effective ways to win at relationship management with our teams and clients: Part of developing these good relationships among our teams involves humility. If we as leaders allow our ideas and products to be open to review and suggestions from our employees, it will allow our employees to know that they can bring and explore their own ideas without being immediately shut down. Our vulnerability helps foster trust within our organizations. We shouldn't be, “the smartest person in the room.” Boost this by making sure that everyone in the room has a voice, and become a, “yes, and…” culture of people building on each other's ideas. Use guides, such as videos, or Zvi Band's book, Success Is in Your Sphere: Leverage the Power of Relationships to Achieve Your Business Goals, on learning the system to have it work best for you. For example, if there is an option to create a drip campaign, have your people think of the most relevant ways to time it and not just go with a standard setting. Set your own strategy. Ultimately, for any connection development we need to start with a strategy. Start with the goal in mind: identify what your goals are for the year. Identify the people who can help you with those goals. Pick up the phone and say, “Hey, I've been thinking about you. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode 28. How childlike curiosity led to a career in startups with Zvi Band, co-founder of Contactually. When I was young, I would switch career paths based on whatever cool thing I had seen recently. I started out at 3 wanting to be a garbage man, mostly because the trucks were cool. At 5, I wanted to be a pilot after flying to Disney, and at 10, I wanted to be a marine biologist after a trip to an aquarium. Now, at 33, I have finally realized that I love to create, something I shared with this week's guest; Zvi Band, co-founder of Contactually and two DC Meet-ups. Zvi's journey started with a Lego room that he had in his childhood home and his entrepreneurial journey started not too long after. "When I was in high school, I ran Skeevis Windows/Internet Newsletter, a weekly newsletter with Windows tips, tricks, and funny jokes. It grew to over 3,000 subscribers. I loved it." Zvi considers himself a Founder, a Hacker, and a Community Builder. In this episode we talk about how all three of those characteristics led to him co-founding Contactually (which I am a huge fan of), and two DC Meet-ups; Proudly Made In DC, and DC Tech Meetup. Take control of it. Highlight the strengths you gained previously and how they will provide value in your new position. Dorie shares some personal pitch tips. How to find mentors. Try to build a mentor board of directors. Find people with areas of specialty that can help you specifically. Talking about Stand Out. How to become recognized as a true expert in your field. Become a connector and organize an event. Check out Robbie Samuels' Socializing For Justice. Dorie recommends Contactually as a great CRM tool to manage your relationships (so do I). Make it easy for people to connect and find each other at events. Use name tags with “I'm looking for…” for attendees to fill in the blank. My interview with Contactually's Zvi Band. Content creation and inbound marketing is important. Wait for seeds to sprout. It's 100,000 times more powerful for people to come to you, than for you to come to them with hat in hand. Read a bunch of things and become knowledgable enough to write about it. You can also do interviews about the topic and write about those. Do it in a way that adds something new to the dialogue. Your network will build itself, once you've built the content that shows people you are worth it. The first step is to start with your own blog, “establish clips”. Export Facebook birthdays and important to your calendar, so you can have an overview of people's birthdays and you can follow up before the big day. C.C. uses his Twitter handle on every slide when he speaks at conferences. He always takes time to reply to each person who interacted during his presentation. Always take someone's business card and follow up the day you return home. Talk to people at conferences. Start a conversation with the person next to you. You are at a conference to be face to face with people. Try to keep your phone in your pocket. You're paying money to connect with the people in the room. You can watch the sessions online later. Ian Cleary doesn't even attend sessions, he only uses his time to meet people. Create private Twitter lists of people you met at a conference. Read more on this here. Ello, “a creative little commune that nobody has quite figured out yet.” C.C. sets aside time each day to try new social sites, services and apps. Pick up a copy of the best-selling book, Content Rules by C.C. and Ann Handley. How content marketing applies to professional networking. Content is what you create to tell your story. If we judged everybody by their LinkedIn profiles it would be pretty boring. Avoid talking about politics too much online. It may get in the way of your networking and clients. Research the content people have created before you meet them. Focus on your website, email subscribers, and Twitter for your networking efforts online. It takes time to build your network. It won't happen overnight. Give people a reason to subscribe to your email newsletter. Subscribe to the Never Enough Days newsletter. C.C. tries to read a physical book for thirty minutes before bed. Zvi began as a consultant for high-end start-ups, government and VC firms. He had a good reputation, but he was terrible at business development. The concept of staying in touch is not something new. They are just providing a better tool to do this. Zvi said, "The number one reason people fail to network is the simple fact that they don't do it. If you make a consistent effort, even something as simple as sending an email a day, it's a game changer.” from Frank Gruber's Startup Mixology event in DC. (Video) He was so introverted, he wanted to go home on weekends during college. Zvi wanted to get involved in a start-up, so he had to start meeting people. He did so over coffee. He was offered a job as a CTO. It wouldn't have happened if he didn't build the relationships first. He grew a strong business without advertising. “Forget the name of the company, it was me they wanted to talk to.” People do business with those they know, like and trust. Instead of walking out with ten business cards, walk out with one really good relationship. The biggest differentiator between a good networker and a bad networker is whether you do it at all. His DC Tech Meetup draws 1,000 people each month! "A rising tide lifts all boats." -  John F Kennedy. The number one most important thing in networking is to just do it. “Give more than you receive.” The simple phrase, "How can I help you?" is one of the most powerful things he has learned over the years. Tips for hiring staff for your start-up. Twitter is probably the best way to network online (in his industry). Use Twitter lists like a pro. FollowerWonk to search Twitter bios. You can almost participate at SXSW Interactive without even being in Austin. Hashtag Twitter Lists. Use Contactually Buckets for contacts you meet at a conference. Tips for networking as an introvert. There's no danger in attending a networking event. It's like skydiving, at some point you just have to jump off. Plan to attend events with one or two friends.
