Jeff Zoul did not like school. In fact, he said it sucked. Today, he is a lifelong teacher, learner, and leader. His daily post on Twitter reads: "Work Hard...Have Fun...Be Nice...Today!" What I loved about our walk is how open and honest he was about his journey as an educator and the trials he faced growing up. Fully transparent, he takes us on his journey from the struggles as a young boy and adolescent who never felt he fit in, to his troubled days as a teenager who never found that connection with a mentor in high school. Then in his senior year, that all changed. One couple, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, both educators who never had children of their own, gave him hope and validation. "They were magnets for troubled teens," said Jeff, "just good people." Mr. Campbell looked past the labels and destructive behavior and took him on as his own. Both heroes in his eyes, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were role models Jeff looked up to. They saw something in him no one else did at a time he needed it most. While he didn't have the ideal experience as a student is an extreme understatement, the positive influence his mentors had on him inspired him to enter into education. His goal was to do better, to provide a better experience for students by incorporating fun and laughter into teaching and to not be satisfied with simply checking off a "to do" list, but to commit to being all in and seek collaboration to help students solve their problems. He found a way and we are so lucky to have him as a resource. During Jeff's distinguished career in education he has served in a variety of roles, most recently as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning with Deerfield Public Schools District 109 in Deerfield, Illinois. Jeff also served as a teacher and coach in the State of Georgia for many years before moving into school administration. Zoul has taught graduate courses at the university level in the areas of assessment, research, and program evaluation and has been recognized as a local Teacher of the Year and as an outstanding principal in the State of Georgia. He also served as principal at a national School of Excellence in Illinois. He is the author/co-author of more than a dozen books. In 2015 he founded Connectedd with long-time friend and respected colleague Jimmy Casas. Two of the most recent releases are Handle With Care: Managing Difficult Situations in Schools With Dignity and Respect, as well as Disruptive Thinking in Our Classrooms: Preparing Learners for Their Future.Other books include What Connected Educators Do Differently; Start. Right. Now. - Teach and Lead for Excellence; Improving Your School One Week at a Time; The Principled Principal; and Leading Professional Learning: Tools to Connect and Empower Teachers. Zoul has spoken at conferences and school districts in more than thirty states. Jeff has earned several degrees, including his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and his doctoral degree from the University of Alabama. Marita Diffenbaugh believes that hope is a prerequisite for learning and looks for ways to help others see their value, which is why she welcomed the opportunity to write a book through a partnership with Jimmy Casas and Jeff Zoul via ConnectEDD. Her recently published book, L.E.A.R.N.E.R., Finding the True, Good, and Beautiful in Education, is for hope givers who thrive when helping others develop their full potential. Marita identifies seven essential components to consider when providing education as a service to learners, along with a remix for measuring learning success. Each chapter features the True, Good, and Beautiful, for when all three of these are present, we can be sure that students are learning how to learn, learning how to help others, and learning how to contribute in their communities and in our world. Marita Diffenbaugh has served as a teacher, administrator, and has provided coaching and leadership support for districts, schools, and classrooms. As a connected educator, Marita has provided professional development to educators through local, state, national, and international presentations with a focus on the process of learning in both in-person and virtual spaces, care for learners of all ages, and encouragement for positive digital citizenship. She is currently sharing her passion and leadership skills to support the expansion of Elevate Academy, a public Career Technical charter school of choice for students in 6th-12th grades who are not finding success in their current education. As a partner with Elevate Academy’s co-founders, Marita is connecting education with industry and community by developing, planning, and launching this new North Idaho school in Fall 2022. Marita is dedicated to using her strengths and experiences to advocate for respect and opportunity for all learners. In this episode, we discuss: Marita’s path into education and her current experience in preparing to launch a new school. A point a completely missed following up in the interview is the beautiful circle of life she is experiencing after being a teen mom in need of the kind of supports and encouragement she is striving to develop in the school she is launching! Her experience being approached to write a book and ultimately creating a project from her heart that will inspire, And we hear about Marita’s passion for deep learning in schools with authentic experiences for learners to thrive. I am so honored to be connected to Marita, and I know her message will deeply inspire you. It is my joy to share with you Marita Diffenbaugh’s Pathfinder story. Starr Sackstein started her teaching career at Far Rockaway High School more than sixteen years ago, eager to make a difference. Quickly learning to connect with students, she was able to recognize the most important part of teaching: building relationships. Fostering relationships with students and peers to encourage community growth and a deeper understanding of personal contribution through reflection, she has continued to elevate her students by putting them at the center of the learning. Currently, Sackstein is the Director of Humanities (business, English, library, reading, social studies, and world languages) in West Hempstead, New York. While in her first year of leadership, she completed her advanced leadership certification at SUNY New Paltz. Taking what she learned in classes and applying her classroom leadership to a team of teachers, Sackstein was able to start growing as a new school leader, building relationships and demonstrating the kind of leadership she would have liked from her own past administrators. Prior to her current role, Sackstein was a Teacher Center teacher and ELA teacher at Long Island City High School in New York. She also spent nine years at World Journalism Preparatory School in Flushing, New York, as a high school English and journalism teacher where her students ran the multimedia news outlet WJPSnews.com. In 2011, the Dow Jones News Fund honored Starr as a Special Recognition Advisor, and in 2012, Education Update recognized her as an outstanding educator. In her current position, Sackstein has thrown out grades, teaching students that learning isn't about numbers but about the development of skills and the ability to articulate growth. In 2012, Sackstein tackled National Board Certification in an effort to reflect on her practice and grow as an educational English facilitator. After a year of close examination of her work with students, she achieved the honor. She is also a certified Master Journalism Educator through the Journalism Education Association (JEA). Sackstein also served as the New York State Director to JEA from 2010-2016, helping advisors in New York enhance journalism programs. She is the author of Teaching Mythology Exposed: Helping Teachers Create Visionary Classroom Perspective, Blogging for Educators, Teaching Students to Self-Assess: How Do I Help Students Grow as Learners?, The Power of Questioning: Opening Up the World of Student Inquiry, Hacking Assessment: 10 Ways to Go Gradeless in a Traditional Grades School, and Hacking Homework: 10 Strategies That Inspire Learning Outside the Classroom co-written with Connie Hamilton. Most recently, Starr has published From Teacher to Leader: Finding Your Way as a First-Time Leader Without Losing Your Mind (DBC), Peer Feedback in the Classroom: Empower Students to be the Experts with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Sackstein has also contributed to compilation works in 2017 and 2018: Education Write Now edited by Jeff Zoul and Joe Mazza and What Connected Educators Do Differently with Routledge. She blogs on Education Week Teacher at "Work in Progress," where she discusses all aspects of being a teacher and education reform. She made the Bammy Awards finals for Secondary High School Educator in 2014 and for blogging in 2015. At speaking engagements around the world, Starr speaks about blogging, journalism education, bring your own device, and throwing out grades, which was also highlighted in a recent TedxTalk entitled “A Recovering Perfectionist's Journey to Give Up Grades.” In 2016, she was named one of ASCD's Emerging Leaders. Balancing a busy career of writing and teaching with being Mom to thirteen-year-old Logan is a challenging adventure. Seeing the world through his eyes reminds her why education needs to change for every child. Starr can be reached at mssackstein@gmail.com or via Twitter at @MsSackstein.
