What does Donald Moss have against common sense, Captain Obvious, sincerity, and everything duh!? At War with the Obvious: Disruptive Thinking in Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2018) turns to culture and the clinic to reach beneath semblance, the lure of affect, and the comforts of doxa, and to discuss “erotic thought,” rupture, and conceptual transgression. Moss is interested in how flashes of profound epistemological disorientation and isolation are transmuted into potentiality and theory: from fragmenting “zones of uncertainty” and the suffocating flood of experience we might — as analysts, artists, writers, and political actors — manage our way back to sociality and thinking, safely ashore and reconstituted but not the same. As in his previous books, Moss writes courageously, revealing his own periodic struggles with smugness and easy solutions – moments when he, unable to analyze or gather himself – lashed out, fled, and recovered with great difficulty. In a particularly compelling chapter, Moss describes his experience of terror, shame, and rage when a violent patient threatens to hit him in the face and leaves the consulting room shouting “faggot!” The epithet later erupts in Moss as he waits on a subway platform next to an effeminate man and resounds in the reader as Moss parses his identifications and disidentifications, both with the ostensibly gay stranger and with physical and psychic vulnerability. In the chapter, “On thinking and not being able to think,” Moss reflects on what happens when he observes objects, specifically performance art and documentary photographs, and endures an unexpected collapse of the frame, a sudden loss of legibility. Moss recounts such a disintegration while viewing photos of Abu Ghraib, and attributes it not to the photos' disturbing subject matter but to their uncanny registering of his look: when the spectator's gaze appears within the framed spectacle his subjectivity is obliterated. Captured by the photograph, losing his privileged perspective and link to other audience members, Moss is momentarily rendered an object. Without a stable “I” he is unable to interpret. He concludes that the capacity to create a new frame and thereby regain distance depends on the re-establishment of a transferential “we” — a refinding of one's place among an expanded and transformed community of viewers and readers. The book's most original and moving chapter, “I and You,” is the result of a yearlong collection of patients' utterances. Moss wrote down one sentence from every session, collated each day's lines, and published them in abridged form in At War With the Obvious (all 154 days are presented in a separate book). Together they constitute a dirge, a mournful cry made no less searing by its unstable and acousmatic authorship. Anna Fishzon, PhD is Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol, UK. On this episode of the Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different we have a conversation with Mike Maples Jr., co-founder of Floodgate, about his new book "Pattern Breakers." We explore the concept of Pattern Breakers, non-consensus thinking, and the breakthrough sequence for startups. Mike shares some insights on the role of language in defining new patterns and the significance of early adopters. The conversation provides valuable perspectives on the mindset and strategies essential for entrepreneurial breakthroughs and category design. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Mike Maples Jr on Understanding Pattern Breakers Mike Maples Jr. introduces the concept of pattern breakers as individuals or companies that disrupt the status quo by proposing radically different futures. These entities don't just imagine a different future; they live in it, tinkering with new technologies and experiencing firsthand the opportunities to break the limits of current thinking, feeling, and acting. Mike also discusses non-consensus thinking, and how is crucial it is for pattern breakers. It involves challenging widely accepted norms and beliefs to create transformative value. He emphasizes that breakthrough startups often face resistance from the present and the status quo, making it essential for founders to be disagreeable in the right situations. The Breakthrough Sequence for Startups The first step in the breakthrough sequence is achieving insight breakthroughs. Founders need to immerse themselves in the future they envision, understanding new opportunities and creating new patterns. Mike uses examples of legendary founders like Marc Andreessen and Bob Metcalfe, who were visitors from the future, to illustrate this point. Once insight breakthroughs are achieved, the next step is to achieve product-market fit. This involves building what's missing for early adopters and lighthouse customers, who play a crucial role in shaping the direction of a startup. Founders must listen to these early believers and co-create the future with them. The final step in the breakthrough sequence is driving growth. This involves creating a movement and category design, gradually moving more people to the envisioned future. Mike highlights the importance of using differentiated language to escape the comparison trap and the conformity trap, leading people into a different future. The Role of Big Companies in Creating Breakthroughs Big companies can also create breakthroughs by harnessing inflections and insights to change the future. Mike discusses different approaches big companies can take, such as sustaining innovation, organic growth, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and partnering. However, he also acknowledges the challenges and biases that come with being a successful company. One effective strategy for big companies is backcasting, where leaders stand in the future and look back to the present, envisioning how they achieved a radically different future. This approach helps companies switch their mental scaffolding from being in the present and looking forward to being in the future and looking back to the present. In this show, I sit down with Eric Sheninger, CEO of Aspire Change EDU and author of "Disruptive Thinking in Our Classrooms." Together, we explore the evolving landscape of student engagement in 2024. Eric and I discuss how to truly engage students. First, Eric talks about moving from compliance to engagement and how that is crucial for student learning. He shares his relevance of thinking framework. Eric also shares his opinion about AI and how it can be a valuable tool but also what it is not and his concerns. He talks about the focus for principals and how they should provide feedback and the role of principal observations in schools. Andy helps clients outmanoeuvre competition and conditions in their markets, and make marketing, advertising & PR content work better, land stronger, and drive real results.KEY TAKEAWAYSDisruption is something that Andy is really passionate about so he and Danielle talked about what this really means and why it's so important.Andy explained to Danielle how his collaboration with Marty Neumeier began and how Level C originated from his personal circumstances at the time.Branding hasn't always been Andy's thing. He's a trained musician, majored in English Literature, worked in finance and studied law before coming to the world of brand.Andy spoke about how his branding classes with Marty work, why they are different from traditional teaching and how they teach you how to think about brand.BEST MOMENTS‘These days, if you're a brand, if you're a business and you're trying to stand out and you think that just being different will get you there, we make an argument that it won't, that it's not enough'.‘Creative thinking, strategic thinking, design thinking - more and more so called experts and coaches and mentors out there, they've been doing the whole how to do thing - how to do this, how to use this template. More and more of them have been trying to copy us now and it's kind of weird because they end up almost completely contradicting what they were doing just a couple of years ago'‘I won't work with anyone now who won't acknowledge that this is what I'm doing, who won't allow me to have the opportunity to teach them how to be a great client, teach them where I'm coming from right now'.‘We believe that creativity is more valuable in problem solving than just being more productive, but it needs more people who are able to think about what they do before they do it, while they do it, and after they do it'.ABOUT THE HOST - DANIELLE CLARKEDanielle Clarke is a Brand Strategist and University Lecturer. In Season 14, Family Seasons Podcast continues the conversation about Disruptive Thinking. We've learned that disruptive thinking is an individual's ability to challenge conventional thoughts, question established norms, and develop innovative and unconventional ideas. Disruptive thinkers often question the status quo, challenge traditional approaches, and seek alternative solutions to problems. They are unafraid to challenge existing rules and push boundaries to bring about changes and improvements. Disruptive thinking is often associated with creativity, innovation, and a willingness to take risks to achieve breakthroughs. This description of a disruptive thinker describes our special guest, Tasha Odunuyi, or Tasha O. In this episode, Tasha shares a traumatic story that shattered her family forever. As the result of a sibling fight, she loses two of her brothers but finds the strength to fight the justice system, grief, generational family trauma, and so much more. She finds out that she is much stronger than she ever imagined. Disruptive thinking refers to a mindset or approach that challenges conventional ways of thinking and seeks innovative solutions to problems. It involves questioning the status quo, embracing change, and being open to new ideas. The term is often associated with disruptive innovation, a concept introduced by Clayton Christensen in the late 1990s.Key characteristics of disruptive thinking include:Questioning Assumptions: Disruptive thinkers question established norms and challenge assumptions that may be limiting progress. They are willing to ask "why" and explore alternative perspectives.Embracing Change: Disruptive thinkers are comfortable with uncertainty and change. They see change as an opportunity for improvement and innovation rather than a threat.Risk-Taking: Disruptive thinking involves taking calculated risks. It requires the courage to try new approaches and experiment with ideas that might be unconventional or unproven.Adaptability: Disruptive thinkers are adaptable and flexible. They can pivot quickly in response to new information or changing circumstances.Creativity: Creative thinking is a fundamental aspect of disruptive thinking. It involves generating novel ideas and finding unique solutions to problems.Open-Mindedness: Disruptive thinkers are open to different perspectives and are willing to learn from diverse sources. They recognize that innovation often comes from unexpected places.User-Centric Focus: Disruptive thinking often involves a deep understanding of the end-user or customer. By putting the user at the center, innovators can identify unmet needs and develop solutions that truly address them.Iterative Approach: Disruptive thinkers are not afraid to iterate and refine their ideas based on feedback and results. They understand that the path to innovation may involve multiple attempts and adjustments.Long-Term Vision: Disruptive thinking is often aligned with a long-term vision. Innovators with a disruptive mindset consider the broader impact of their ideas and aim for sustainable, transformative change.Collaboration: Disruptive thinking can be enhanced through collaboration. By working with diverse teams and drawing on a variety of skills and perspectives, innovators can create more robust and comprehensive solutions.Disruptive thinking is particularly relevant in today's fast-paced and dynamic world where industries are constantly evolving. It can lead to breakthrough innovations that transform markets, industries, and even societies. However, it also requires a willingness to challenge the status quo and a recognition that failure can be an integral part of the learning process.Support the showYou can support this show via the link below;https://www.buzzsprout.com/1718587/supporters/new

Aspects of Innovations Everyone is creative internally. But innovation has two aspects: creativity in coming up with the idea and following through. The latter is 90% of the equation. There are ways to train and come up with game-changing ideas. Rituals for Creativity For Chris, exercise helps. The combination of exercise and the meditative state that he enters when running helps in creative thinking. Pro tip: Have your phone handy to write the ideas down when it comes up. Five Unexpected Methods of Disruptive Thinking The ingredients of game-changing innovations starts with grounding to your basic truths. Creative persistence - Seeing it through; not only persistence but finding creative solutions Eliminating friction - strive for simplicity; "all you have to do is" is a sign of too much friction Picking your obsession - innovation lock in on where you believe; stick to it even in the face of resistance Connect to emotions - pull from the heart Non-consensus insight - hold your convictions; but as a leader you have to communicate that How is Innovation connected with Emotion Your team builds connection emotionally when they contribute ideas and understand how it can be an act of service–by impacting people. Chris' Best Medicine: My son. And vitamin B!

Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
Since the Great Recession of 2008-2010, enrollment in Pennsylvania's 14-campus state university system has notably changed, with some campuses growing in enrollment, and others losing students precipitously. The Commonwealth's annual system funding was recently ranked 46th out of 50 states, a dismal statistic. Yet, there are "help wanted" signs everywhere from employers who want to hire college educated employees. What gives? Pennsylvania is far from alone in facing a challenge of increasing costs and fewer graduates. Other state systems around the country are in various stages of the same existential crisis. The solution cannot be just to raise tuition and fees-national research shows student debt is averaging $30,000. To complicate things further, intercollegiate athletics plays a crucial role in attracting, retaining and engaging students on campus. Many of these campuses have highly successful NCAA Division II (and I) athletic programs, with some sports winning NCAA titles. All have loyal alumni and faculty who care deeply about good teaching. Next year, six of the 14 campuses will integrate into two entities, and will show off new names and administrative structures. No campuses were closed. The hope is these reimagined universities will be more responsive to the needs of their regional workforces and the 21st century economy, attracting a scholar and an athlete who wants a dynamic education at an affordable price. All will keep their NCAA athletic teams and identity, no small accomplishment. There are many good lessons in this conversation for other higher education system professionals and for those who work on system campuses to absorb. My guests today are two of the leaders, the CEO and the Board Chair, Daniel Greenstein and Cynthia Shapira. Dr. Greenstein is the chancellor of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. Since 2018, Dan has served as the chief executive officer of the State System (PASSHE), which operates Pennsylvania's 14 public universities, serving nearly 100,000 degree-seeking students and thousands more enrolled in certificate and other career-development programs. The chancellor works with the Board of Governors to recommend and develop overall policies for the System. Dr. Shapira is Chair of the Board of Governors, and president of the David S. and Karen A. Shapira Foundation, leading the development and implementation of the foundation's philanthropic initiatives. She was appointed by Governor Tom Corbett to the Pennsylvania Commission on Women and served on Governor Wolf's Advisory Board on Education and Workforce Development. In 2017, she was honored as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania. Dan and Cindy were recently recognized by "City and State Politics and Policy" as recipients of the 2022 Higher Education Power 100 in Pennsylvania. Mentioned in the podcast (and recommended by both Dan and Cindy): Arthur Levine's new book, The Great Upheaval: Higher Education's Past, Present, and Uncertain Future, a complimentary read for this conversation. The term used by Cindy refers to the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/karen-weaver/message

David Vafai is Chief Executive Officer at bfinance International Limited, an investment consulting and advisory firm that he founded over 20 years ago. The firm is known for its innovative service model, which has shifted some of the traditional structures in investment consulting, manager selection and asset management. Our conversation traces David's early entrepreneurial roots which saw him cycle through newspaper delivery to a hotdog stand in his early 20s and later a photo business. The unifying feature of each of these diverse business lines was a commitment to customer service and ensuring high degrees of customer satisfaction. We turn then to the origins of bfinance and how the business model evolved into a global franchise. We dissect what it means to provide investment consulting services and how the industry is evolving in this area to address the "information asymmetry" that continues to persist. As a citizen of the world with global roots David offers a unique perspective on the immigrant story, the meaning of the hustle and why customer satisfaction should be the starting point and ending point of all enterprises.Series 4 is brought to you with the kind support of Federated Hermes, Inc., a leading global investment manager. Guided by their conviction that responsible investing is the best way to create wealth over the long term, their investment solutions span equity, fixed-income, alternative/private markets, multi-asset and liquidity strategies and a range of separately managed accounts, distributed through intermediaries worldwide.

Jeff Zoul did not like school. In fact, he said it sucked. Today, he is a lifelong teacher, learner, and leader. His daily post on Twitter reads: "Work Hard...Have Fun...Be Nice...Today!" What I loved about our walk is how open and honest he was about his journey as an educator and the trials he faced growing up. Fully transparent, he takes us on his journey from the struggles as a young boy and adolescent who never felt he fit in, to his troubled days as a teenager who never found that connection with a mentor in high school. Then in his senior year, that all changed. One couple, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, both educators who never had children of their own, gave him hope and validation. "They were magnets for troubled teens," said Jeff, "just good people." Mr. Campbell looked past the labels and destructive behavior and took him on as his own. Both heroes in his eyes, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were role models Jeff looked up to. They saw something in him no one else did at a time he needed it most. While he didn't have the ideal experience as a student is an extreme understatement, the positive influence his mentors had on him inspired him to enter into education. His goal was to do better, to provide a better experience for students by incorporating fun and laughter into teaching and to not be satisfied with simply checking off a "to do" list, but to commit to being all in and seek collaboration to help students solve their problems. He found a way and we are so lucky to have him as a resource. During Jeff's distinguished career in education he has served in a variety of roles, most recently as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning with Deerfield Public Schools District 109 in Deerfield, Illinois. Jeff also served as a teacher and coach in the State of Georgia for many years before moving into school administration. Zoul has taught graduate courses at the university level in the areas of assessment, research, and program evaluation and has been recognized as a local Teacher of the Year and as an outstanding principal in the State of Georgia. He also served as principal at a national School of Excellence in Illinois. He is the author/co-author of more than a dozen books. In 2015 he founded Connectedd with long-time friend and respected colleague Jimmy Casas. Two of the most recent releases are Handle With Care: Managing Difficult Situations in Schools With Dignity and Respect, as well as Disruptive Thinking in Our Classrooms: Preparing Learners for Their Future.Other books include What Connected Educators Do Differently; Start. Right. Now. - Teach and Lead for Excellence; Improving Your School One Week at a Time; The Principled Principal; and Leading Professional Learning: Tools to Connect and Empower Teachers. Zoul has spoken at conferences and school districts in more than thirty states. Jeff has earned several degrees, including his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and his doctoral degree from the University of Alabama. In his spare time, Jeff enjoys running and has completed over a dozen marathons. What is disruptive? For us to consider the word disruptive, we shall first consider the root word; disrupt. Means to prevent something, especially a system, process, or event, from continuing as usual or as expected. One thing stands out in this definition and it is moving away from the norm (usual) as it were. What is thinking? It is the process of considering or reasoning about something.Thought (also called thinking) is the mental process in which beings form psychological associations and models of the world. Thinking is manipulating information, as when we form concepts, engage in problem solving, reason and make decisions. Thought, the act of thinking, produces more thoughts. A thought may be an idea, an image, a sound or even control an emotional feeling.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_thought#:~:text=Thought%20(also%20called%20thinking)%20is,of%20thinking%2C%20produces%20more%20thoughts.So Disruptive thinking can be said to be moving away from the ‘norm' due to unfavorable conditions to seek out better ways of doing things. The year 2020, is one we will not forget in a hurry. It presented such situations that saw a quantum leap in our thinking process which can only be described by that word, DISRUPTION. It revealed how our lives are governed by how we perceive our world via the medium of thoughts by engaging our thinking processes. In this Episode of the Word Café Podcast, we tried to dwell on this to throw some light on the subject. We've reached a point in time when everyone wants innovation, but most people don't know how to actually attain it. It's not easy, which is why there are so many failed brands and companies. In our era of AI, rapid change, disruption, and possibility, there are so many great opportunities within our grasp. However, smart, successful people consistently miss out. Their capabilities are limited by seven traps, and they rely on and repeat past decisions. They miss out on the potential of what could have been. If we could remove these traps, what could we accomplish? How much more successful could we be? Today's book teaches us how to think disruptively, providing specific steps to create real innovation and change. It combines our guests high energy provocative thinking with tactics that have been battle tested through projects with leading innovators like Disney, Starbucks, Amex, IBM, Adidas, Google, and NASA. Do you think disruptively? In this episode we spoke with self-described "Rough Diamond", Nicole Yershon about what it means to think like a disruptor and how disruption can be turned into an advantage.Nicole is not new to disruption. When Nicole joined Ogilvy in 2000 she was given the simple brief of “bringing the agency into the 21st century”.She achieved this by building relationships with third party suppliers and embracing new technologies that saw Ogilvy digitise some 10,000 tapes of adverts dating back to the 1950s. Nicole later went on to be the founding partner of Ogilvy's London Digital Innovation Lab – the dedicated Innovation unit of Ogilvy & Mather Group where she worked with brands such as Amex, IBM, BP, Selfridges, Unilever, BA and Wetherspoons. She's also famous for her “black book” of leading suppliers. In 2016 she founded the NY Collective with a mind to remove the traditionally opaque practices of consulting and marketing agencies. We spoke about topics such as:• Turning disruption into an advantage• Why we need disruptors in any business• The prayers, players and stayers• The Ogilvy Lab Rats and Lab days• Measuring the impact of disruption• Can disruptors be made or are they born?• How a “black book” of suppliers became a community• 3 Things for next week • Be curious• Get outside your comfort zone• Be authenticYour Host: Actionable Futurist® Andrew GrillFor more on Andrew - what he speaks about and replays of recent talks, please visit ActionableFuturist.com follow @AndrewGrill on Twitter or @andrew.grill on Instagram.
