Principals say it's too much to expect of covid-fatigued teens and they increasingly believe the international assessment is no longer relevant. RNZ education correspondent John Gerritsen has been reporting on PISA since it began in 2000. He spoke to Corin Dann.

Show Notes Item – November closed with the news of a terrible tragedy in Michigan, as 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley used a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun to kill four of his schoolmates This incident is remarkable for the role that social media and digital evidence should have played in its prevention, and the importance both will play in the subsequent investigation and trial of not only Crumbley but his parents as well. Litigation is also likely against the school district and various school officials Questionable Parenting Black Friday present for dad or kid? Stoking (or allowing unchecked) fetishism Warning Signs Instagram Posts Lots of Instagram images attributed to Ethan Crumbley (some probably spurious) Generally agreed that 4 days before shooting, he posted a photo of a gun on Instagram with the caption “Just got my new beauty today SIG SAUER 9mm. Ask any questions I will answer.” Rumors Circulating Among Students (Some Stayed Home) Some number of students told their parents that they did not want to be in school because “something was going down.” This will require more investigation. How did they know? Where did they see the information or threats? What did they hear? Who posted it? In-School Searches for Ammunition Crumbley told the teacher that he and his family like to visit shooting ranges and that was why he was looking at ammunition. The parents confirmed that shooting is a hobby. Threatening drawing Crumbley told his teacher and counselors that he made the drawing for a video game he was designing. Terrible Miscalculations Earlier Warnings On two separate occasions in early November, the school sent out warnings regarding threats of violence. Not clear if one or both were related in any way to Crumbley but people were on edge. School-Parent Conference The school met with all of the Crumbleys following the discovery of the teen's drawing. Parents refused to take Ethan home. Failure to Search Despite having clear reasonable cause, the school did not search Ethan's backpack or locker. Failure to Separate or Isolate A good argument can be made that there was sufficient evidence to isolate or suspend Ethan until a proper psych evaluation could be conducted Digital Documentation of Tragedy Surveillance Videos Investigators have been able to document Ethan's actions using school video surveillance footage. Witness Videos and Text Messages Increasingly, students in these situations are documenting what takes place using their mobile devices One chilling video shows students responding to a knock at the door. They believed that it was Ethan, although local law enforcement says it was one of their officers. Digital Investigations Devices Investigators have already discovered videos recorded on Ethan's phone the night before the killings in which he talks about shooting students Social Media Investigators have promised a “deep dive” into Ethan's social media to look for planning, possible motives, etc. “Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said the shooting was “not just an impulsive act.” She said investigators had uncovered a “mountain” of evidence showing that the attack was premeditated.” Potential Liability Will the school or district employees be sued? Almost certainly. Michigan law may provide immunity to the school district if the school officials were “engaged in a governmental function” Individuals have immunity unless their actions constituted “gross negligence” Will they be found liable? That's a tougher question. Were all applicable procedures followed? If yes, then they made a judgment call that had a terrible outcome. That's not the same as being “grossly negligent.” Just two months ago, the Broward County school district settled 52 lawsuits in the Parkland shooting for a total of $25 million Policy and Procedure Changes “The challenge for administrators is properly identifying the one student who might act violently amid far more who display warning signs but never do any harm.” School officials warn that pandemic stress and time away from school “has led to a surge in behavior problems and violence in schools, including a huge spike in gun incidents.” Fallout Fake Social Media Accounts Copycat Threats against Schools Resources - #2021–12–05 After Michigan school shooting, experts question what could have prevented it “https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/12/05/michigan-school-shooting/” - #2021–12–04 In the Michigan Shooting, What Is the School's Responsibility? “https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/04/us/oxford-high-school-responsibility-legal.html” - #2021–12–02 Oxford High School shooting: Everything we know about deadly Michigan attack and suspect Ethan Crumbley “https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/oxford-school-shooting-what-happened-b1968122.html” - #2021–12–01 Michigan suspect recorded video about killing students night before shooting, officials say “https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/michigan-suspect-discussed-killing-students-video-phone-authorities-sa-rcna7328” - #2021–11–30 4 dead, 7 injured in Oxford High School shooting; suspect is 15-year-old student “https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/oakland/2021/11/30/oxford-high-school-active-shooter-victims/8810588002/” - #2021–10–20 Parkland victims' families reach $25 million settlement with school district 3 years after massacre “https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/20/parkland-massacre-families-settlement-cruz/ ” - [n.d.] Principal Recovery Network, a project of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which helps support education leaders who face these tragedies. “https://www.nassp.org/community/principal-recovery-network/” - [n.d.] Safe Havens International “https://safehavensinternational.org/”

Dr. Handy's life mission is to enhance the lives of others via education, counseling, and coaching. She loves the Lord and is an active member of the Church of the Redeemer in Clarksburg, Maryland where she serves as an usher. She shared with us that one of the keys to being a successful leader and coach is that you have to be a visionary. You have to be able to try and envision what’s next and prepare your students for that. Some advice Dr. Handy gave for those struggling to balance career and maintain home life harmony is to schedule everything into your calendar. This includes your personal time. Dr. Handy recommends that you schedule off personal time just as you do your professional business endeavors. She mentioned that if she could talk to her younger self, she’d make sure that  once she started coaching track, she wouldn’t have stopped running track. Reminding us once again that it’s all about finding that balance in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle in both work and with yourself. Some of the leadership tidbit takeaways Dr. Handy wanted to leave you with; “Whatever you do, you have to make a commitment. You have to have that commitment mindset. Think big, take bold action, and make an impact in whatever you do. Always remember that in order to get what you want out of life you have to help others to get what they want.”You may connect with Christine via the following:  Facebook: www.facebook.com/christinethecardladyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/christine_the_card_lady

Episode 26: Becoming the Boss Featuring: Chamille Schuck, High School Assistant Principal Mentor Bio: At 27, Chamille is an Assistant Principal for a charter high school that serves inner city students in the South Los Angeles area. She has a BA in English Education and Theater, a Secondary Teaching Credential, a MA in School Leadership, and her Administrative Services Credential. Chamille is young and fierce female leader at her school site, and in the Charter Organization as a whole! She takes great pride in the work she does coaching teachers to be more effective and culturally relevant in the classroom, and developing school practices to better meet the needs of 21st century learners. Industry Overview: What do High School Assistant Principals do? An assistant principal, also known as a vice principal, is an entry-level position in educational administration that helps the principal in the overall running of the school. The job is fast-paced and requires multitasking to hold a leadership position in interactions with students, teachers and parents. It may be stressful at times as well, as you will need to ensure the safety of the students and make sure that your school meets federal and state student/teacher performance guidelines. Some assistant principals view the role as a stepping-stone to becoming principal, while others are content to stay in the role for their career. If you’re a teacher who aspires to be an assistant principal, you’re in good company. A survey by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) found principals averaged 14 years as a teacher before moving into an administrative role. What does their work environment look like? In some school districts, assistant principals handle a specific subject area, such as literacy or math. Assistants may be assigned to handle student safety, provide student academic counseling, or enforce disciplinary or attendance rules. They may also coordinate buses or supervise building and grounds maintenance. Assistant principals at middle schools and high schools spend more time with disciplinary actions and less with instructional leadership. This is due to student's raging hormones and increased freedoms. High school APs have an extra level of responsibility with monitoring truancy as some students have cars and can leave campus. As a result, high school and middle school APs interact more with students and spend less time with teachers or in meetings. How do you become a High School Assistant Principal? Principals and vice principals typically need a master’s degree, preferably in educational leadership, education administration or related field, in order to qualify for the role. Many states require master’s degrees for certification. According to the BLS, about 45 percent of principals have master’s degrees and 13 percent have a doctorate. Most states require public school principals to be licensed as school administrators. The requirements for licensure differ between states. In addition, some states require principals to pass a test and take continuing education classes to maintain their license. Most states require a background check as part of the certification process. You do not have to have a school administrator license to be an assistant principal in a private school, but it can’t hurt. What additional skills that they typically don’t teach in school do you need? Effective communication skills Problem-solving skills Strong interpersonal skills Critical thinking skills Good judgment Administrative and organizational skills An ability to uphold rules and regulations while tolerating ambiguity What is the pay? Salaries for assistant principals vary based on geographic region and school district size. The National Association of Secondary School Principals conducted a survey in 2010 and found the average salaries ranged from $64,398 to $94,673 for middle school assistant principals and from $68,274 to $98,079 for high school assistant principals. Salaries on both coasts run higher than the middle of the country and in school districts with more than 25,000 students. The lowest salaries are found in the Southwest, and in school districts with less than 2,500 students. Future demand in marketplace? Employment for educational administrators is expected to grow at a rate of 6 percent from 2012 to 2022, according to the BLS. This is slower than average from other professions. The number of job openings is based on school enrollment, and while enrollments are expected to rise, state and local budgets are also a factor. It’s expected there will be more job openings in the West and South, and fewer openings in the Northeast. Overall… Pros and cons of being an assistant principal: Pros: Every day is different. The role is usually a precursor to becoming school principal. Spending time with children and making a difference in their lives. Cons: Little time for reflection or planning. Disciplinary issues can consume many hours in the day. Daily responsibilities can be all-consuming, and overtime is often necessary to catch up. Todd's personal opinion… If you like being a leader and helping others, a career in education could be for you! Roles in education administration, such as a high school assistant principal typically include a much higher base salary than teachers, but the work can be intense! If you've got the grit, there's even further room for advancement! Show Notes: [0:53] - Episode Previews! [1:47] - Todd Intro / Episode Start! [2:32] - Meet This Week's Guest... Chamille Schuck! Mentor's Key Points: For education, and many other career paths, your undergraduate degree does NOT have to be from an elite college! For your undergraduate / bachelors degree, focus on finding a school that fits your lifestyle and goals, offers programs that accelerate you through career certification, and most of all... avoid overpaying for this first degree!! When it comes to finding your first job or getting into grad school, the college you got your BA from doesn't really matter if you're pursuing a master's degree or PHD. Structuring your education and career credential path strategically, with the right schools and programs, can save you years of time and potentially tens of thousands of dollars on tuition! Life is a Balancing Act! It might take a lot of work sometimes, but learning to manage your interests and priorities early on will allow you to do MORE of what you love, AND achieve higher levels of success! If people try to bring you down, don't let their negativity throw you off your path! Be Your Own Advocate! Take charge of your life, and become the one who determines your destiny! Don't depend on your mother, teacher, or the "education system" to build a path FOR you! Be willing to go out of your way to seek help and advice from teachers, peers, and mentors!   I heard today’s guest, Olenka Cullinan, speak at an event recently and I just knew her story had to be shared with this audience. In a nutshell, this entrepreneurial powerhouse left Russia at age 19 with only $450 to her name (that she borrowed from her uncle) determined to seize the American dream and build anything she wanted. While growing up in an entrepreneurial household (her mom was a die-hard entrepreneur with her own company), she chose to pursue education instead in an effort to distance herself from the entrepreneurial world. Once in the U.S., she worked three jobs at one point to complete her education degree (and completed it without owing a cent!).   While Olenka loved teaching people, she soon felt the pull to do more and leapt back into the entrepreneurial world while combining it with her training in education. She may have started off with humble beginnings, but she has since used the skills she knew she had and BUILT her own success. Olenka is determined to help others discover their passions and now teaches teenagers the skills to become successful entrepreneurs in her Rising Tycoons Academy. She truly believes in helping this country’s youth turn their dreams into a dream life. I already know I’ll be applying the principles she taught in this episode to my children down the road. Be sure to tune in to find out how you can too. --   Question Highlights:   Why didn’t you choose to be an entrepreneur right away when you came to the U.S.?   What is the opportunity landscape here in the U.S. compared to where you came from?   Do you believe there is an immigrant edge that gives you a leg up in terms of grit and hard work?   What is Rising Tycoons?   Where can adults do a better job in creating kid tycoons?   What is a “passionista?”   What is holding people back the most when it comes to pursuing their passionista journey?   Do you see teens struggle with the same limiting beliefs that adults struggle with when it comes to earning money?   How do you want your daughter to view money and success when she grows up?     In This Episode You Will Learn:   How Russian-born Olenka became an entrepreneur living the American dream   How nothing is required outside of your own mindset and skills to build success   Why opportunity is wide open for everyone   Why it’s so important to look at the actions that lead to results   How Olenka teaches teens success skills in entrepreneurship, leadership and personal development   Why parents must educate themselves on the world around their kids   Why it’s imperative that we stop preparing and start doing   And so much more…   Olenka’s Thoughts…   “If skills are learnable, then success is learnable, too.”   “Comfort and execution don’t live on the same block.”   “You always choose. You can look at any circumstance in your life and choose what it becomes. Is it going to become an excuse or an opportunity? Because you can’t have both at the same time.”   “We can only change the country by changing the next generation.”   “Stop preparing and start doing.”   “You have to practice the unsexy routine to get anywhere, but you have to give yourself small pieces of ‘candy’ along the way to remind yourself why you’re doing that.”   “Kids have no issues with having dreams. They only have issues finding pathways for those dreams.”   “The moment you stop looking at money as something to move you forward and start looking at it as something that creates love in your community, family and in the world around you, is when you’ll change your perspective.”   --   Olenka Cullinan is a CEO and Founder of Rising Tycoons, where she turns teens into mindful tycoons.
