Little Feat's legend goes back to 1969! The band has produced ubiquitous hits like "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin'." Their influence stretches across generations. They have endured heartbreak, loss, and lineup changes but the core Little Feat sound has remained true since the beginning. Scott Sharrard joined LIttle Feat in 2019 and has been instrumental in their efforts leading up to the band's latest record Strike Up The Band, which was released on May 9th, 2025. In addition to his work with Little Feat, Scott was the band leader for the Gregg Allman Band and his band The Chesterfields. The band, and Scott, have lived a fascinating musical life. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Midnight Flight" from Little Feat's excellent new record. Listen on: Spotify- Apple Podcasts- YouTube-

Pianist Bill Payne, who founded Little Feat in 1969 in Los Angeles with singer-songwriter-guitarist Lowell George, takes us on this great American band's rollercoaster ride through the 1970s. Payne wrote or co-wrote more than half of Little Feat's self-titled debut album, but the mercurial George came to dominate as the band ascended via the albums Sailin' Shoes, Dixie Chicken and Feats Don't Fail Me Now, the last of which features the Payne standout “Oh, Atlanta.” By the time of the classic 1978 live album Waiting for Columbus, George had pulled back and was struggling with addictions, and tensions ran high — yet the band still cooked. What happened? And how did Payne revive Little Feat after George's death to continue leading it through today?

We discuss some of his playing, but obviously that vital context is missing so do please keep that in mind. Wishing Nicko all the best in his recovery - what a beast!
Bill Payne, along with Lowell George, formed Little Feat in the early 70's, blending elements of rock, country, blues and New Orleans funk, into an immediately recognizable sound. The band's second album, Sailin' Shoes and their third, Dixie Chicken, have recently been given the deluxe treatment - expanding to triple album sets, including the remastered album, bonus tracks and outtakes, and revelatory live footage. Payne is currently on the road with Little Feat, who later on in the fall will be doing The Albums Tour, choosing one of those two albums and playing them in their entirety each night. Bill has also played with the Doobie Brothers, members of the Grateful Dead and Leftover Salmon. He also talks about writing his memoir, which he hopes to have completed by next year.

In the rich tapestry of rock and roll history, certain bands stand out for their ground-breaking sound and unwavering commitment to pushing musical boundaries. Among these legends is Little Feat, a band known for their seamless fusion of rock, blues, R&B, and country. At the heart of their unique sound was the exceptional talent of keyboardist BILL PAYNE. This week's episode delves into the remarkable journey of Bill Payne and Little Feat, celebrating their musical fusion and enduring impact. Little Feat burst onto the music scene in the late 1960s, captivating audiences with their melodies and genre-defying style. Led by the charismatic Lowell George, the band's line-up was a powerhouse of musicians, and in the midst of this collective brilliance stood Bill Payne. His virtuoso skills on the piano elevated the band's sound, acting as a melodic thread that seamlessly wove together their diverse influences. What set Little Feat apart was their ability to effortlessly blend musical genres. At the core of this sonic tapestry was Bill Payne's musical intuition. His ability to traverse from bluesy rhythms to soulful ballads, and from rollicking rock to intricate jazz-infused compositions, was unparalleled. Payne's piano became a vessel of expression, transcending boundaries and creating a sound that was uniquely Little Feat. Beyond his instrumental prowess, Bill played a vital role in the band's song-writing process. His compositions often delved into introspective themes, combining poetic lyricism with infectious melodies. Songs like "Oh Atlanta," with its infectious hooks and heartfelt storytelling, and "Dixie Chicken," a timeless anthem of love and longing, showcased Bill's song-writing brilliance and contributed to the band's lasting legacy. Little Feat was known for its amazing live performances. Bill Payne's presence on stage was magnetic, as he effortlessly switched between soulful piano solos and intricate keyboard textures, leaving audiences spellbound. The band faced a devastating blow when Lowell George tragically passed away in 1979. However, instead of succumbing to despair, Bill Payne and Little Feat found strength in their shared love for music. Payne stepped up as a leader, guiding the band through this challenging period and ensuring that their innovative spirit endured. Their subsequent albums showcased their resilience and commitment to carrying forward their musical legacy. Today the band continues to play for audiences around the world with Bill the last remaining original member. In this wee's episode we explore the man and his craft. In the late 1960s, Lowell George was playing rhythm guitar in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention when Zappa suggested George leave the band. There are conflicting versions as to why: Zappa believed George was too talented to be a backing player, he did not like the drug references in George's song “Willin',” or Zappa didn't appreciate George's fondness for pot. Regardless, George left. He connected with Roy Estrada, who had played bass in the Mothers of Invention, drummer Richie Hayward and keyboardist Bill Payne. The foursome became Little Feat, one of the most distinctive and influential bands in rock history; while “Willin'” would become one of Little Feat's most recognizable songs. As bands often do, that Little Feat lineup evolved and expanded, lasting about a decade and producing a series of critically acclaimed albums. In 1979, George dissolved Little Feat due to artistic differences with Payne and then died of a heart attack later that year at age 34. “I never quite understood Lowell's reticence to jazz,” Payne told me on the most recent episode of The Load Out Music Podcast. “I don't know, maybe he was ahead of us or we were behind.” Payne relishes all that was, and remains, of Little Feat – Lowell George included. He loves that people of all stripes still pack into music venues to see the band play, grooving side-by-side to the sounds of Little Feat songs like “Dixie Chicken” or “Fat Man in the Bathtub.” Yet, he's deeply concerned with what's occurring in American culture. “When you walk outside the concert hall, I find it tougher to hold a conversation with people that don't appreciate voting rights,” he said. “What's happening with this country and the world is beyond frightening.” Payne feels like when Little Feat plays music, however, “all those lines disappear.” Like Jeff Beck on guitar or Freddie Mercury's vocals, Payne is revered for what he can do on the keys. His work on the barrelhouse blues piano and Hammond B3 organ is legendary – considered one of the definitive rock-and-roll piano greats along with Leon Russell, Elton John and several others. Payne is so respected, in fact, that he has worked with a who's who of music elite including The Doobie Brothers, Phil Lesh, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Brown, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Robert Palmer and the list goes on and on. About a decade after George dissolved Little Feat, Payne reformed the band with holdovers Paul Barrere, Sam Clayton, Kenny Gradney and Hayward. Craig Fuller seamlessly slid into the lead vocal role and the band released Let It Roll in 1987. The album went on to become an instant success, earning Little Feat its first No. 1 hit on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, becoming certified gold and reviving interest in the band's early works. Payne said Little Feat has always an “elastic” idea and its success – from 1969 to this day – remains a product of the band's musicianship. “I think it's a direct correlation to the music,” said Payne. “It connects because of the music. Yes, we miss Lowell. Lowell was a defining and distinct voice…When it works, it works because people can grasp what the idea of what that music was and is.” More than five decades after starting Little Feat, Payne is also the last man standing. He is the only original band member still with the band. During our conversation on The Load Out, we cover a lot of ground over about an hour. Payne and I discuss his astonishing career in-and-out of Little Feat, reflections on George dissolving the band, the various incarnations of the group, Payne's love for making music and sadness for those who've passed, as well as his concerns regarding race and politics. We also zero-in on perhaps the only missing piece from Little Feat's 50-year resume: Sitting on the outside looking in at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – a remarkable hole for the group Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page calls his favorite American band. “Yeah, I'd like to see that for Little Feat,” Payne said. “I think it's well deserved. I think that if Little Feat can't get it, who the hell should?” For any concerns he may have, Payne still finds solace in the “community” that is Little Feat. Over a half-century, it's been a revolving yet consistently diverse collection of players with varied beliefs and backgrounds that has endures even now. “Music is about community,” he told me. “Art is about community.” The legendary Bill Payne has a lot to say, so sit back, enjoy and have a listen to the most recent episode of The Load Out Music Podcast.

The very first time I heard The Bros Landreth my heart jumped “those boys were raised on Little Feat (One of the very best bands to ever step onto a stage. Anywhere) They were led by the late Lowell George. Lead singer, primary writer, singular guitarist. When I got to interview Joey and brother David, they spun a story of growing up in Winnipeg. Their father was a well-known working musician and the house was filled with Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Poco records but the most popular were the early 70's albums by Little Feat. (Little Feat. Sailin' Shoes. Dixie Chicken. Feats don't fail me now) It was a true musical education. This all leads us to this Podcast featuring Joey Landreth and his new solo album All that you dream. It's a tribute to Lowell George and Little Feat. A “thank you” if you will. Turns out, we're the ones who should be saying thank you. It's a beautiful table full of the Little Feat Dixie Chicken. One generation saluting another. The Bros are headed back to Europe for tour dates(listed here) Remarkably they are even bigger stars in Europe than here but that imbalance will surely change this year when this killer solo album is joined by the next Bros Landreth album, in the Spring! Note: check out Joey in episode #52

John Cale was the most musically astute member of the Velvet Underground and on this album it shows. Soon after being fired from VU, Cale found work as a producer (The Stooges, Nico) and a collaborator (most notably with avant garde musician, Terry Riley). But he also began crafting songs influenced by the Beach Boys, the Band, and Phil Spector. He was also enthralled by Little Feat's Dixie Chicken enough to hire three members of the band, including Lowell George, to back him on this, his third solo album, Paris 1919. It also includes production by Chris Thomas, who we introduced you to in previous podcasts. Grondle is sick so Trudy takes over. First Rudy laments his legal dilemma and contemplates his next strategy. Then Hop-along Bill Cassidy brings his guitar and we light up the place with Rudy, Bernie, Pete, Jon Osoff and Marco Rubio contributing to our latest rock opera about the border. Then Bill sings about his home state and plays his version of Little Feat's Dixie Chicken. And to the tune of a couple old Elton John songs, Bernie reminisces about his past and past President Trump reconsiders his new social media venture. And Tucker and Roger Stone joins us for a final song. All that and less, this week. Hailed by critics, but mostly ignored by the recording buying public for several years after its release, the album, Dixie Chicken by Little Feat, highlights the songwriting, singing, slide guitar playing, and flute playing by the band's defacto leader, Lowell George. This is a band's band. And many other artists had hits with songs from this album. Listening to how this album seems steeped in the swamp rock of the south, it's hard to imagine the band had a mentor and proponent in Frank Zappa, with whom Lowell George played with.

344 - Kenny Gradney We recorded this interview with bassist Kenny Gradney backstage at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Kenny Gradney has been the bassist of Little Feat ever since the ‘Dixie Chicken' album. A native of Louisiana, he replaced Little Feat's founding bassist in 1972. He has recorded and performed with a great number of artists ranging from Delaney and Bonnie, Warren Zevon, Bob Weir and many more famed acts. I hope you enjoy this interview with the congenial Kenny Gradney of Little Feat.
This week we have a special tribute to the late Paul Barrere who died this past October. This is a recording of Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett from SoHo, a bar in Santa Barbara. It's a two-parter as they played for a couple of hours. My favorite Dixie Chicken is on the first part! Here is a little bit about Paul and Fred.Paul Barrère and Fred Tackett are guitar players. In fact they are the guitar players with the legendary band Little Feat... Now they have joined forces to form an acoustic duet that will quite frankly blow you away. Performing songs from their Little Feat catalogue and more with a decidedly different twist. They first played together on the album ”Dixie Chicken“some thirty-five years ago and since then have played together or individually on numerous recording sessions for Little Feat and countless others including Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Dionne Farris, and the Wallflowers, to name a few.Paul and Fred --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

And so it is says, by those who sayeth such things, that besides it being colder than a frozen carp on grandma's porch in the middle of January, we must look back at what was. Or in this particular case, we must listen to what was. And that was, based on where you've landed is of course, the 2018 year in review of The Best Radio You Have Never Heard. And so it is also said, such task, with a minor hiatus while Rick was away for a year "writing his (ahem) book" last year, that since the early days of BRYHNH over a decade ago, that task has been laid in the hands of BRYHNH producer Rick From New York. And somehow each year Rick extracts the best of the best. I could go on further about bridges, slices, cannoli and meatballs, but best I let Rick do the talking and spinning from here on in. We now join Rick in progress . . . The Return of the Old Guy I'm back . . Just like that colonoscopy you've been putting off, and I got a whole new jam! Frankly, 2017 was the shits for me. I guarantee you don't want to hear about it, and as Danny Whitten said, "I Don't Want to Talk About It". Just assume it's an epic Rock and Roll Story and, after many thanks to the BRYHNH Producers for admirably standing in last year, we are ready to move on. Happy 2019 everyone! Now let's get on it! The Chase by Garth Brooks. We talk about Garth’s very good album The Chase. Garth takes a stand for what’s right, especially in his first song “We Shall Be Free.” That song was more controversial than Garth anticipated, and it won a GLAAD Media Award for its lines about people getting to love whoever they choose. The episode runs a little long… but we just got so excited about a Garth album that we can actually really enjoy! In early August, I traveled to College Station to meet up with three of my favorite ag lawyers, Jim Bradbury, James Decker, and Kyle Weldon. We had a great session at the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course in College Station. We titled the program "Ask an Ag Lawyer" and basically just answered people's questions on water law, oil and gas law, eminent domain, estate and succession planning, fence law, and property issues. There were 150+ cattle producers in attendance and they had wonderful questions that made the program really interesting and (hopefully!) useful for the participants. Today, on the podcast, we recap that program including our favorite questions, best stories, and some of the most important issues addressed. From how to deal with an aggravated neighbor to property tax valuation issues to questions about groundwater rights, this podcast gives a great overview of some of the issues that ag lawyers love to chat about. After the program, we adjourned to the Dixie Chicken, ate Tijuana Fries, listened to classic country, and talked all things ag law on the porch. I am certainly grateful to have the opportunity to work with these guys who are great legal minds and even better people! Lastly, all three of my guests today have been on prior podcasts. Kyle was Episode #2 talking about law school, Jim was Episode #3 discussing Waters of the United States, and James was on Episode #8 focused on settling estates. Assiduously speaking, writing, and consulting on all things sales, marketing, business, & life. Father of 7. Husband of 20+ years. Podcaster. Blogger. Juggler. Wes Schaeffer was raised by effervescent nomadic Christian bluestockings well-versed in the Socratic Method and Plautine comedy and was fed buffalo brisket, crawfish etouffee and Pabst Blue Ribbon until he mastered time travel, telekinesis and photosynthesis. He was recruited to play football for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs from ‘88-92 when R.E.M. lost their religion and “Achtung Baby” served as a warning for interns aspiring to matriculate at the Oval Office. Upon graduation his nomadism continued as his tours of duty included a year of learning to “throw bones” at the Dixie Chicken, a year savoring the hammer-subtle tastes of kimchi in the ROK, a year learning how to grow, harvest, self-prescribe and self-medicate medicinal marijuana in the People’s Socialist Republic of Southern California, two trips to the Middle East enthralled with the dedication of the muezzin leading the adman and a culminating two year gig in his first official training role in the home of Biloxi Blues. Today I am joined by my friend and Texas A&M University alum, Cari Rincker, to talk about family law. As Cari explains, practicing agricultural law can include a variety of legal areas, including family law. I absolutely love her tag line that she does "horses and divorces!" I failed to mention this on the podcast, but Cari is extremely active on social media, so be sure to check her out on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. During our discussion, Cari gives great advice related to why folks should consider prenuptial or postnuptial agreements and explains how she has converted from being against prenups, to being a proponent of them. We talk about reasons for these agreements and what type of terms are often included. We also discuss different types of alternative dispute resolution available for family law issues, and why Cari is a proponent of those resources. I love her thoughts on why divorce litigation differs from any other type of lawsuit and her encouragement for people walking through a divorce to seek out counseling. Additionally, she offers thoughts and advice for students or attorneys interested in ag law and planning on hanging out their own shingle. Cari says that one law she would like to see changed is that she'd like to see the process for obtaining a divorce be simplified and more affordable for people. For her restaurant recommendation, she goes back to her Texas A&M roots and mentions the ever-popular Dixie Chicken in College Station, Texas. In particular, she's a fan of the Tijuana fries, burgers, and cold beer.
