AJ is also an entrepreneur and the CEO of Rush Club Nation. He was born in Southern Utah and spent much of his childhood playing with cousins at the family cattle ranch. He dropped out of high school his senior year and joined the military. From the age of 16 until he deployed, AJ went through a new job every three months. In 2005 he deployed with his field artillery unit to Ramadi, Iraq. After returning from Iraq, AJ took a job but found himself miserable selling pest control door-to-door. He was depressed and was soon misdiagnosed by doctors with PTSD. He chose to not take the prescribed antidepressants, he started exercising and discovered CrossFit as a way to enhance his mental and physical wellbeing. AJ opened his own CrossFit gym in 2011, in 2013 he had an idea to do with CrossFit athletes and competition what Dana White did with the UFC. He took CrossFit and made it entertaining and added weight divisions. With only 3 years invested, AJ is the CEO of Rush Club Nation. He’s been figuring out how to manage Rush Club’s popularity and massive growth while figuring out how to scale nationwide and globally. Kelley Jackson and Jessica Griffith, otherwise known as “Team Booty and Tiny Beast,” visit CrossFit HQ for Week 1 of the Team Series. The duo joins the CrossFit Podcast and discusses their competitive experiences.
Jessica Griffith and Jonathan Ryan are pilgrims. Sick pilgrims, to be exact. And they are on a mission to remind us all that we are pilgrims here on earth. A major part of their mission is to equip and rally together what they call servant artists, artists who draw back the veil of the Mystery through their work, which they perform in the service of the world. Jessica and Jonathan join me around the table today to talk about Sick Pilgrim, Catholic Weird, Mystery and sacrament, October and ghost stories, and, of course, servant artists. This show in particular brought me great joy. I'm delighted to have had the opportunity to hang out with Jessica and Jonathan, and I hope we can do it again soon. [Hint. Sorry for the sound quality of this episode. I know it wasn't the best. But Jessica was an awesome interview. Since this interview 2 years ago, she has gone to the games 2 more times. Once with the CrossFit 417 team and again as an individual. Below is the orgional show notes from 2 years ago. For today's podcast, I interviewed Jessica Griffith. I met Jessica two years ago when she competed in her first ever CrossFit competition. She cracked me up back in the athlete staging area, and we became friends through the awesome CrossFit community. I have watched Jessica grow into an amazing athlete. She went from her first competition two years ago to competing in the CrossFit Games this year on a team. You can tell she loves this sport and how it has changed her physically and mentally. We talk about going to the dark place in a workout and how she goes to that place every workout at this point in her career. She saw what other Games athletes do to be the best, and it has driven her to work just as hard. Episode was first released Dec 16 2015. And is one of my most listened to interviews.
