Send us a textToday we are tackling a topic that has consumed the country, the news, and social media, and has sparked a political firestorm in recent years—transgender athletes in sports. To date, 26 states have enacted laws banning transgender youth from participating in sports teams consistent with their gender identity. There is so much fear and misinformation around this topic, and today In the Den Sara sits down with the incredible Chris Mosier, the first openly transgender man to earn a spot on a U.S. Men's National Team. Chris and Sara talk about the reality of trans people in sports and what we can do to better understand and support the trans athletes in our lives and in the country.Special Guest: Chris MosierChris Mosier is a trailblazing athlete, coach, and founder of TransAthlete.com, the leading resource for transgender inclusion in sport. In 2015, he made history as the first openly transgender man to earn a spot on a U.S. Men's National Team, a milestone that helped catalyze policy change by the International Olympic Committee on trans athlete inclusion and earned him the title of "the man who changed the Olympics." A decorated multisport athlete, Chris is an eight-time Team USA member, five-time Men's National Champion, and Men's All-American. Chris's advocacy extends far beyond competition. Through his writing, speaking, and policy work, he has influenced trans-inclusive practices at every level of sport—from high school athletics to professional leagues. As one of the most visible voices opposing anti-trans legislation in the U.S., Chris is a driving force in the fight for trans rights and equity. Chris is a Nike-sponsored athlete featured in multiple global campaigns. He also mentors transgender and nonbinary athletes around the world, living by his powerful motto: “Be who you needed when you were younger.”Links from the Show:The TransAthlete website: https://www.transathlete.com/ Chris's website: https://www.thechrismosier.com/ ESPN's Body Issue 2016 photos: https://www.espn.com/espn/photos/gallery/_/id/16797886/image/1/bodies-want-2016-bodies-want-2016 Changing the Game documentary: https://www.hulu.com/movie/changing-the-game-71bcd7f5-63b4-485c-b4ee-ed41517484d1 In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Editor's note: During the episode, we talked about Chrystal's ode to dad bods post, which had yet to run at the time of recording. We decided to just put it here instead of as a separate post, because why make things more complicated than they need to be? We already have an entire podcast devoted to doing that. Also, here's the time Creed played Thanksgiving for some reason. You wouldn't see Nickelback doing that, what with the being Canadian and with Chad Kroeger being too busy having all that sex. Anyway, on to the newsletter portion of today's program… which is free today as we're giddy about the Mets taking four of five from Atlanta, but also please consider a paid subscription to support the folks bringing you fun stuff here!Project ShaqBox trivia: Yesterday, Jacob deGrom combined with Joely Rodriguez and Edwin Díaz to strike out 19 Atlanta hitters, tying Tom Seaver and David Cone in individual efforts for the most K's by Mets pitchers in a nine-inning game. Which team did Seaver's game, a 2-1 victory on a Wednesday afternoon in April at Shea, come against… and why wasn't it that team's most notable time that season being on the short end of a historic pitching performance? An Ode To Dad BodsBy Chrystal O'KeefeThe great Lizzo once sang, “I like big boys, itty bitty boys,” and that resonated with me. I know women often get criticized for only enjoying the tight pants and baseball butts, and I'm not here to dispel that rumor. Some, like myself, live and breathe baseball, but also enjoy the different body types of players. Sure, Starling Marte has abs of steel. Yes, Jacob deGrom could probably be a Calvin Klein model. Does Fransisco Lindor remind me of a young Prince Rogers Nelson, oozing sex appeal? Hell yes. Any hot blooded, man-loving person would surely go for that, I mean, have you seen Michael Kopech? Some of these baseball players are buff, or clearly prioritized squats and leg day in the offseason. And that's great. But what about the normal-looking guys that weren't sculpted by the gods? Dad bods have been a thing for quite some time now, even in the baseball world. It's one of the few sports that allows for multiple body types, and I appreciate that. When the Mets acquired Daniel Vogelbach, I was thrilled. Not only because I knew the power he brings, as someone that is very familiar with the Pirates, but also as someone that appreciates his body type.  With Pete Alonso and Daniel Vogelbach often going back to back in the lineup, I'm thrilled to see peak athletic performances from guys that look like they can smash some ribs, chug a beer, and immediately walk out of the dugout and tattoo a ball out into the concourse. Alonso is known for being meaty, and the video of his shirt being ripped off after a bases loaded walk to win the game, showcasing an immaculate dad bod is one of the many reasons I love baseball. (I hope no one goes through my Google searches for this piece.) Pete Alonso Joins MLB Network SHIRTLESSIt's time to normalize the dad bod in baseball. It's time to appreciate Prince Fielder, Johnny Cueto, Yasmani Grandal, Bartolo “Big Sexy” Colon, CC Sabathia, Lance Lynn, Pete Alonso, Daniel Vogelbach, and the OG dad bod, Babe Ruth. If you're reading this, ESPN, please make one of the above mentioned players the cover of the Body Issue. I promise there is an audience of appreciative dad-bod loving people out here. And even more after yesterday.Trivia answer: On April 22, 1970, an Al Ferrara homer and Dave Campbell single were all that stood between Seaver having a 19-strikeout game and Seaver having a 19-strikeout no-hitter. But the San Diego Padres had even more trouble connecting two months later, on June 12, when they drew eight walks in a game against the Pirates, but got no-hit by Dock Ellis, famously under the influence of LSD for the gem. The birthday celebrations continue on the podcast, with TV reigning in his 30th birthday for the latest episode. EstoBro starts the episode by asking the birthday boy if Carmen Electra still has it (1:30) as the major sex symbol of the 1990s announces her OnlyFans account being launched for her 50th birthday. After the formal introductions and birthday wishes, the Gents remanence about turning the page of their milestone birthday (12:00), especially when it comes to the nostalgic feeling of playing video games. The Gents are actually impressed with the Los Angeles Chargers revealing their schedule for the 2022 season in the form of an anime opening (24:30), and they make note that the nerds have definitely taken over sports indefinitely. In the feels of nostalgia, EstoBro also asks TV which had a more significant surprise reaction between the cover of the Sports Illustrated: Summer Swimsuit edition or Hillary Duff posing in the Body Issue for Women's Health (33:15); to little surprise, TV definitely puts "Lizzie McGuire" on blast for being an absolute smoke show. TV wants to take advantage during his birthday episode to talk about all things basketball (40:00) with an update on the conference finals in the playoffs and some interesting takes on the state of the sport; before giving an update on the locals with the Tampa Bay Lightning taking advantage of the Florida Panthers in the latest round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs (54:00). The final throwback of the Gents' looking back at their lives and friendship is centered around the legendary Wally Backman (58:20) and his managerial career in minor league baseball, especially in the mini-series 'Playing for Peanuts' with his vulgar antics. TV is currently having an adventure in Munich, Germany (65:20) for a bachelor party and EstoBro is envious that his cohost will be enjoying Bavarian-style beer in the motherland that created the beverage. The Gents will return after a long Memorial Day weekend, which also includes Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida.Be sure to wish TV a very happy birthday for his 'Dirty 30' at his Twitter handle @TheoVVlass

She learned about triathlon and signed up for her first race a few weeks later. Seely was a member of the Arizona State University collegiate club triathlon team and a nationally ranked triathlete before her diagnosis. In 2010, Seely was diagnosed with Chiari II Malformation, basilar invagination, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which affect her brain, spine, and connective tissues.   After her first surgery, she was back to competing seven weeks later at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships with ASU. She made her debut as an elite paratriathlete in 2012, earning bronze at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships that year. Then in 2013, Seely had her left leg amputated below the knee due to complications and increased spasticity in her foot. That would move her into a new paratriathlon category — but she continued to thrive, winning five gold medals on the elite ITU circuit in 2014. She earned her first two world championship titles in 2015 and 2016.   At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Seely made history by winning a gold medal in paratriathlon's debut as a Paralympic medal event. She also competed in track & field at the Rio Games, placing sixth in the 200m. That same year, she was a featured athlete in ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue. Seely has been dominant in the women's PTS2 division since Rio, earning silver at the 2017 World Championships and winning her third career world title in 2018 after an undefeated 2018 elite season. In July of 2019, Seely won an ESPY for Best Female Athlete with a Disability. She faced significant health challenges in late 2020 and early 2021, spending several months in the hospital with endocarditis, severe inflammation of the heart. She returned to full-time training in the spring, regaining her fitness in time to earn a silver medal at the Americas Triathlon Para Championships June 27 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, a key selection event for the Tokyo Games.   She says her biggest inspiration in life is her grandma for pushing her to be a better athlete and human and to make the world around her better. She also credits her service dog Mowgli as being a great training and life partner. When she travels for competitions, Seely collects postcards and mini silver spoons from each location. Her favorite spoon is a hand-painted ceramic spoon from Estonia, and some of her favorite places that she has traveled to are Northern Ireland and Poland. She says her name is spelled “Allysa” because of a misspelling on her birth certificate, and of her biggest talents outside of triathlon is creating DIY projects.     Our News is sponsored by Buddy Insurance. Remember ESPN the Magazine?  NEXT athlete, the Body Issue – for me, the Mag was appointment reading.  Maybe I'm a little different, but I grew up addicted to the sports magazine scene. Sports Illustrated, Sport, The Sporting News. Every year my grandmother would get me a subscription to these mags for Christmas, she didn't have to think about it, just renew the subscription each year and I'd be happy as could be.  SI covers adorned my walls. In my mind's eye I can still picture the SI cover with Bernie Kosar in his Browns jersey and mini fro, with the headline “Banking on Bernie”. I see it clearly because it was the cover that grabbed your eye as you walked into my bedroom.  I didn't particularly like the Browns or Bernie, it just so happened to be in your line of sight, and I remember it vividly.  Growing up, these mags were all I read. Cover-to-cover.  My mom tried to get me to read more novels, more classics, but I loved the storytelling that came through on those pages. Frank Deford, Leigh Montville, Alexander Wolff.   ESPN the Magazine raised the bar.  The pictures were better, content was faster paced, the branding, the stats, the data visualizations and the storytelling were just awe inspiring. I worked at a competing sports network and yet read ESPN the Magazine for inspiration.   NEXT athlete, the Body Issue, Athlete X, The Biz, Two Way – it was amazing.   But magazines, well, they died, and it wasn't climate change that killed them, it was audience change. TL;DR became a thing. Everything we needed was on our phones. Information was right here all the time.   September 2019 ESPN published their last magazine.  They said the demise was caused by the “rapid evolution of consumer habits” which means, people were no longer buying paper publications.  Get this in December of 2018, just 9 months before shuttering, The Association of Magazine Media, ranked ESPN The Magazine No. 1 in total audience. It ranked No. 1 among magazines in web and mobile web audiences and was top ranked in video.  And that wasn't enough. It still didn't work.   Remember magazines, those were great.  Today's guest Gary Belsky worked at ESPN the Magazine for almost 14 years, culminating in being Editor in Chief 2007-2011, in fact the Body Issue was one of his brain children. He's written 8 books, is an accomplished speaker and is the Chief Content Officer for Elland Road Partners.    As former guest Joan Lynch told me, Gary Belsky is one of the smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of speaking with. After my conversation with Gary which, you are about to hear, I concur.   Listen to Gary Belsky on the latest Work In Sports podcast...

In the second installment of the Davey Classic Series, Ally expertly breaks down Dave's groundbreaking story - "It Happens" - from ESPN The Magazine's first Body Issue in 2010. Inspired by NFL MVP Lamar Jackson's recent bout of "cramps" the Flems explore the science, sociology (and, of course, the scatological humor) behind the ultimate sports taboo: elite athletes pooping their pants. We all do it. In fact, we produce 1.5 billion pounds of the stuff every day on this planet. But what happens to the athlete's mind and body when they push themselves beyond the limits of the human body? More often than you think, they end up like Lamar Jackson, Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, surfers, NASCAR drivers, Olympians, 70% of endurance athletes and most NFL linemen - humanized by the Tao of Poo. Listen in as the Flems take a deep dive into the story that launched the iconic Body Issue Undercarriage Anthology.

These sons and daughters are following in their fathers' footsteps while making their own name. Her dad, two-time Hall of Famer Rick Flair, is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and Charlotte Flair is living up to his legacy. The college volleyball player turned WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) star has been a trailblazer for women in WWE, with nine championships to her name. “The Queen” was also the first WWE star to grace the pages of ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue. You can't have a list of famous fathers and their kids without mentioning the ultimate trio – the Manning crew. Dad, Archie Manning, was an NFL (National Football League) quarterback for 15 years. His quarterback sons Peyton and Eli have both won two Super Bowls. Their third brother Cooper is ‘only' a partner in a law firm and a TV personality. Cooper's son, Arch, is keeping the family name alive as an impressive high school football prospect. You'll not likely be able to miss the 6'6” Vashti Cunningham in next month's Summer Olympics. The high jumper is the daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback turned pastor Randall Cunningham. This will be the second Olympics for Vashti, who competed in Rio. She has long discussed how her dad is her rock as she competes at the highest levels. Laila Ali had big shoes to fill when she followed in her dad's footsteps. Her father was the one and only - the “World's Greatest” boxer Muhammed Ali. A boxing champion herself, she's also a television personality and fitness guru who has appeared on shows such as American Gladiator and Dancing With The Stars. But she doesn't stop there. Laila has her own line of seasonings (including the G.O.A.T seasoning), a skincare line and her own clothing line at Nordstrom. The future of baseball lies in the hands of the 22-year-old offspring of two baseball (MLB - Major League Baseball) legends. Vladimir Guerrero Jr, the son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, follows in his father's footsteps, leading the league in home runs and all-star voting. Then there's San Diego Padres Fernando Tatis Jr (son of former MLB player Fernando Tatis). At a young age, he has already been on the cover of the “MLB The Show” video game, landed his own Gatorade commercial and is the leading vote-getter amongst shortstops for the all-star game. Long before Milwaukee Brewers star outfielder Christian Yelich posed nude for ESPN’s Body Issue, actor Burt Reynolds became the first male to pose au naturale in Cosmopolitan magazine. The year was 1972. Burt appeared in many Hollywood films including “Deliverance,” “The Longest Yard” and “Smokey and the Bandit.” I asked him about the nude photo layout in Cosmo. He didn’t seem at all pleased about the notoriety he received from the stunt. He also told me that his ex-wife Judy Carne had an interesting comment about the fold out.

Sarah's list of “firsts” could fill several lifetimes: setting her first World Record (100m dash) at age 13, first amputee featured on the cover of Runner's World Magazine, first female athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship on a prosthetic (2005), first amputee (male or female) to grace the cover of ESPN Magazine's Body Issue, first amputee (male or female) to participate in CBS's “The Amazing Race”, first amputee (male or female) to complete the World Marathon Challenge (7 half-marathons on 7 continents in 7 days), and first female athlete to run the Great Wall Marathon in China on a prosthesis.
