The ZENERGY Podcast: Climate Leadership, Finance and Technology

The New York City Comptroller's office works to promote the financial health, integrity, and effectiveness of New York City government, in order to strengthen trust, secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers, and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. Led by an independently-elected citywide official, the Comptroller's office provides checks and balances needed to hold City government accountable for budgeting wisely, investing responsibly, operating efficiently, acting fairly, living up to its obligations and promises, and paying attention to the long-term challenges we face together. John Adler became the Chief ESG Officer at the New York City Comptroller's Bureau of Asset Management in January 2022, where he oversees initiatives related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts on pension fund investments. His responsibilities include corporate governance, diversity, equity and inclusion, climate change, workers' rights, and integrating ESG into the investment process. Previously, John was Director of the Mayor's Office of Pensions and Investments under Mayor Bill de Blasio and spent 23 years in the labor movement, most recently leading the SEIU's Retirement Security Campaign and co-founding the Georgetown Center for Retirement Initiatives. Show Notes: [1:50] - John shares his background and how his career path has led him to his current role as the Chief ESG Officer. [4:00] - John discusses the primary focus areas at the Comptroller's Office. [6:55] - His previous experience serving under Mayor de Blasio gave John a lot of knowledge to prepare for the work he's doing now. [11:02] - For making the case for ESG, there were challenges that have evolved over time. [12:31] - ESG has become much more widely accepted in the business world as a way to appropriately evaluate business risk. [16:04] - Managers are committed to ESG and climate change, but they don't want to get in the crosshairs of anti-ESG. [17:38] - Critics believe their criticism serves them politically. [19:09] - Fiduciary duties are taken very seriously. [20:27] - John shares some examples of efforts that have represented ESG's values. [24:27] - John discusses another example of union representation. [26:54] - There is a four component implementation plan to move forward towards climate change goals. [28:39] - The most difficult challenge is identifying private market dedicated strategies to invest in climate solutions. [31:21] - There's a drive in the economy right now for climate solutions. [32:22] - Pension funds are not big enough to adequately address the climate change challenge we are all facing. We need to collaborate. The core innovation of data availability in the modular landscape revolves around minimalism. Due to the minimal smart contract execution capabilities of altDA chains, they can focus solely on providing a specialized service of data verification & publishing. In addition to the design of minimal blocks, these chains are able to perform a unique task of Data Availability Sampling (DAS) which is a revolutionary innovation for blockchain scaling. In today's presentation, we sit down with John Adler, an Ethereum OG and creator of optimistic rollups. We take a deep, technical dive through the various node types (full, light, and partial) in Celestia's architecture. After that, we took a second to digest and summarize and then dove right into Blobstream, another cornerstone of Celestia's approach. Blobstream acts as a one-way relay for data attestations between Celestia and other blockchains and recently has been deployed in testnet on Base and Arbitrum Orbit. We also touched on the development of Succint's Blobstream X, and their zk version of Blobstream. Finally, we asked some rapid fire questions about Celestia's design and John's perspectives on the modular space at large. Enjoy!

This week Anna (https://twitter.com/AnnaRRose) chats with Ismail Khoffi (https://twitter.com/KreuzUQuer) from Celestia about how and why they're focusing on building a data availability-first L1 blockchain. Ismail takes us through how data availability can be a problem, primarily with light clients and breaks down the components necessary to understanding the data availability problem such as state changes, the separation of consensus from execution and how Celestia aims to be a pluggable consensus layer. Guests:Alex Gluchowski (@gluk64)John Adler (@jadler0)Host:Richard Yan (@gentso09)James Prestwich (@_prestwich, special co-host)Today's motion is “ZK rollup has a better set of security/scalability tradeoff than Optimistic rollup.”Rollups are a class of layer-2 Ethereum scalability solutions. They allow an off-chain aggregation of transactions inside a smart contract. Users can transact inside the contract with security guarantees, and they will settle to the mainchain at some future point.ZK and optimistic rollups are different in the way they ensure the validity of these transactions that are being kept off-chain.The ZK approach uses math. It bundles the transactions, compresses them, and adds a zero-knowledge proof that indicates the validity of the state transitions. When the transaction is sent to the mainchain, the block is verified by the attached zero-knowledge proof. The optimistic approach uses economic incentives. An operator publishes a state root that isn't constantly checked by the rollup smart contract. Instead, everybody hopes that the state transition is correct. However, other operators or users can challenge the validity of the transactions, revert the incorrect block, and slash malicious operators. We compared the two approaches from the standpoint of security, usability, capital efficiency of exits and more.Today's debaters are John Adler and Alex Gluchowski. John is the proposer of the original construction of the optimistic rollup and cofounded Celestia, and Alex is implementing a ZK rollup at Matter Labs. Our co-host James Prestwich is a security consultant and auditor for solidity contracts, among many other things. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes. John Adler, Jr., MD John Adler is the CEO of both Zap Surgical Systems and Cureus Inc. Dr. Adler is world-renowned for inventing the CyberKnife and the related field of image-guided therapeutic radiation. Dr. Adler has been on the faculty of Stanford University since 1987, being appointed the Dorothy and TK Chan Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology in 2007. His entire medical and neurosurgical education happened at Harvard, excepting a one-year fellowship at the Karolinska Institute with Lars Leksell, the “father of radiosurgery”. As an academician, John is the author or co-author on more than 300 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and serves or has served on the editorial boards of eight different peer reviewed journals. He is also a named inventor on more than 20 patents. While creating the CyberKnife, Dr. Adler founded Accuray Inc (NASDAQ: ARAY) in 1992 to commercialize his invention. Up until 2009 he served in varying roles at Accuray including CEO, Chief Medical Officer and Chairman. To date Accuray technology has been used to treat more than one million patients and most modern radiation equipment now incorporates John's basic idea for image-guided targeting. In 2002 Dr. Adler founded the CyberKnife Society, later (2012) renamed the Radiosurgical Society. He also serves or has served on the scientific advisory boards of 7 different medical device or pharmaceutical companies. In 2014 Dr. Adler founded Zap Surgical Systems in Silicon Valley with a mission to “Advance Cancer Treatment for All Humanity”. His invention, the Zap-X received US FDA clearance in September 2018. John also founded and serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Cureus.com, the world's largest and fastest growing multi-disciplinary open access medical journal, publishing nearly 3000 peer-reviewed articles each year.  Unrealistically and even laughably John yearns to live the peripatetic life of a big wave surfer.
