Part 1: Luke Chennel - John Bond (1912-1989) and his wife Elaine bought the faltering magazine Road & Track in 1949. Over the course of his ownership and editorship, Bond built the magazine into a major cultural force. This presentation examines the dimensions that Bond engaged with his editorial viewpoint from a wholistic cultural lens. Bond built a durable version of car culture, the practices and values of which remain in many forms today, though under challenge from old and new trends in the automotive industry. Bond's version of car enthusiasm stemmed directly from two sources: his education at the General Motors Institute and his enthusiasm for European racing. Road & Track's coverage of the foreign motorsports scene for some time was the only widely available source material for an American audience. Luke argues that Bond's two decade editorship (1951-1972) of Road & Track created the foundational dimensions of traditional “car guy” culture, with its familiar and clubby atmosphere familiar to those “in the know,” but also acted in an exclusionary way to women, casual automobile and racing enthusiasts, and those who might have appreciated automobiles from other dimensions than their mechanical design or performance on certain tests. Finally, the presentation examines Bond's version of car culture in a contemporary light, considering the roles of the changing nature of racing and its relationship to road vehicles, the renaissance in electric vehicles, and debates about mobility in the contemporary climate. Part 2: Kristie Sojka - will explore the progression of gender representation within the time that John Bond owned and edited Road & Track magazine. It will examine all aspects of the publication between the years of 1951-1972, including cover art, article content, photographs, and advertising. The presentation will compare and contrast the first ten years of Bond's editorship with the last ten years to identify any potential changes in female representation. With the historical perspective of developing gender politics of the time period, the presentation will consider whether these societal shifts had any impact on women's representation within the pages of the publication. Part 3: Ken Yohn - will explore car culture from an anthropological perspective, as a complex whole combining both behavior and the material objects integral to the behavior. This formulation of culture thus includes material artifacts, rituals, customs, language, beliefs, institutions, and techniques, among other elements. This presentation will address two main questions. As presented in Road & Track, what are the essential elements (behavior and artifacts) of car culture? Second, can we learn anything, or draw non-obvious conclusions about car culture by adopting this type of anthropological perspective? ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 Introduction and Overview 00:26 John Bond and the Rise of Road & Track 02:24 Luke Chennel's Personal Journey 03:51 John Bond's Influence on Car Culture 07:13 Bond's Vision for American Sports Cars 10:19 The Role of Racing in Car Development 15:07 Kristie Sojka on Gender Representation 23:56 Advertising and Gender in Road & Track 31:56 Disappointment in Female Representation 32:41 Dedication to John and Elaine 33:01 Ken Yon's Anthropological Perspective on Car Culture 34:12 Exploring Car Culture Through Different Lenses 37:01 Defining and Undefining Car Culture 43:11 Intergenerational Transfer in Car Culture 50:58 Q&A Session and Final Thoughts 57:34 Sponsors and Closing Remarks ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience.
Julia Hobsbawm and Stefan Stern are joined by John Bond, founder of Whitefox Publishing to discuss the business of publishing. We hear about how the industry has changed since the 1980s and 1990s when huge advances were handed out at the drop of a hat and books were acquired on professional instinct. That's been replaced by data-driven metrics and a clearer understanding of what consumers want. The episode provides advice for anyone looking to have a book published, explaining the current market, the steps involved and the roles that agents play. The episode features clips for Rebecca Frayn's novel Lost in Ibiza and Emily Ross and Alastair Crowl's Just Evil Enough. Both are published by Whitefox. In this episode of PING, Sara Dickinson from Sinodun Internet Technologies and Terry Manderson, VP, Information Security and Network Engineering at ICANN discuss the ICANN DNS stats collector system which ICANN commissioned, and Sinodun wrote for them. This system consists of two parts, a DNS stats compactor framework which captures data in the C-DNS format, a specified set of data in CBOR format, and the DNS stats visualiser which is uses Grafana. The C-DNS format is not a complete packet capture but allows the recreation of all the DNS context of the query and response. It was standardised in 2019, in an RFC authored by Sara, her partner John, Jim Hague, John Bond and Terry. Unlike DSC, which is a 5 minute sample aggregation system, this system is able to preserve a significantly larger amount of the seen DNS query information and can even be used to re-create an on-the-wire view of the DNS (albiet not 1 to 1 identical to the original IP packetflows)
Listen to this interview of John Bond, founder and publishing consultant of Riverwinds Consulting. We talk about the breadth of services and resources now on offer to publishing scientists — while the industry only grows broader and broader. John Bond : "The one thing I would say helps specifically the middle-tier author (who'll, by the way, be most reluctant to try this) is this: Feel really comfortable sharing your early work on a more frequent and a wider basis. Because these authors tend to be quite shy about sharing work until they themselves think that it's absolutely perfect. And if we're really talking about the best quality ideas and the best quality work — well, sharing the concept with close ties early on, and then a draft or an outline with colleagues early on, and then the draft of it completely written, and then the final version — to do, so to speak, your own peer review early on, so that you head off rabbit holes you might be going down or poor expression of your ideas — that is really essential. Therefore, feel very comfortable with developing that network of people, in your institution, but most importantly, outside your institution." Welcome to the 50th episode of Chase The Vase. On this Memorial Day I am blessed to have Chad Jenkins on the Podcast. Chad was the starting quarterback for Army in the 2001 Army-Navy football game, not long after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The 34-year-old, is profiled in All American: Two Young Men, the 2001 Army-Navy Game and the War They Fought in Iraq, a Steve Eubanks book. After football, Chad attended Airborne and the elite Army Ranger school. Soon he was leading men on combat patrols in Iraq. Chad and his men, had to deal with constant ambushes, IEDs, troop morale, and the stress of long deployments and combat. At the height of the Iraq war, Marine corporals and sergeants had a one-in-twelve-chance of being injured. They had a one-in-twenty-four chance of being killed. “They don't come any better than Chad Jenkins,” Army offensive coordinator John Bond said. “He squeezed every ounce of ability out of that 175-pound body every day, every week. He got more out of himself than anybody I've ever been around. He played hurt and he played healthy and all points in between, and you never would know the difference.” (Washington Times.) The traits Jenkins showed as a quarterback — “a dynamic, charismatic personality, a natural leader,” Bond said — serve him and his troops well in Iraq. We discuss the quarterback position, being a leader of an elite Army Ranger and the ability to lead men on and off the field! Come Chase The Vase with us and like, share and comment on the podcast. In this week's episode I chat to John Bond, former MD of Press Books at HarperCollins and founder of Whitefox, which provides publishing services to authors and publishers, about how publishing has changed over the last few years, where it's going, and what that means for authors. 'Writers are getting more impatient and more entrepreneurial... they no longer find it acceptable that there's a process that traditionally involved finding a publisher, maybe via an agent, and that a year to 18 months later that book would see the light of day... It's a very exciting time to be producing things and connecting with people that might want to read them.'
