In this episode, we speak with a guest unlike any other we've had before. Movie director Joshua Caldwell explains everything that goes into directing and creating a phenomenal movie with fly fishing at its heart. "Mending The Line" is a story about wounded veteran John Colter, who returns to the States, still carrying the demons of war, hauntingly disturbed by the everyday expectations of friendships and love interests. In Livingston, Montana, he meets Ike, a surly, headstrong fly-fisherman more than twice his age, and Lucy, a talented photographer turned librarian who reads aloud to veterans, both damaged in their own way. While getting treatment for his physical and psychological wounds, Colter wants only to re-enlist, to have something to die for. But the real challenge is finding something to live for. In our conversation with Josh, we discuss all that goes into making a great film and hear some great behind-the-scenes stories. "Mending The Line" will be available on Digital and On Demand starting September 26th. One of our favorite topics to talk about is transition. The dictionary defines transition as “a change or shift from one state, subject, place, etc., to another” (Webster's Dictionary, 2023). This is a bare-bones, foundational understanding of the concept. Transition is one of the universal truths of the human experience. Just for a moment, think about how many transitions you have already faced in your lifetime based on this definition. It is a bit mind-boggling. Whether it was living the experience or designing programs to assist, we both have tremendous experience with the transitions that wounded, ill, and injured Active Duty military members and Veterans face. Welcome to Episode Eighteen of The Nature of Wellness Podcast. On this episode, we sat down with the accomplished director, writer, producer, and MTV Movie Award Winner Joshua Caldwell. Josh took time to discuss his incredible new film, MENDING THE LINE, which stars Golden Globe Winner® Brian Cox (HBO's “Succession”), Sinqua Walls (The Blackening, White Men Can't Jump), Perry Mattfeld (“In The Dark,” “Shameless”), Patricia Heaton (“The Middle,” “Everybody Loves Raymond”), and Academy Award Winner® Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans, Dances With Wolves).  This film captures the story of a US Marine who is wounded in Afghanistan. During his healing and transition process, he discovers the healing power of nature. After befriending a Vietnam Veteran who teaches him the art of fly fishing, he begins a journey of healing and trauma management. The film was released in theaters one week ago (June 9). Join us as we talk about the ins and outs of the movie-making process, how the movie was able to accurately portray the trauma and healing process, how time in nature has impacted him personally and professionally, and the power of human connection. We definitely got waist-deep in this conversation (that's a fly-fishing joke). Please subscribe, rate, and leave a review anywhere you listen to this podcast. Another full week on #BTLRadioShow as we continue our discussion on A THOUSAND MILES BEHIND with actor JEFFREY DOORNBOS who joins us live, plus our exclusive pre-recorded interview with writer/director JOSHUA CALDWELL as we talk about his new hot-button film INFAMOUS. He was unable to join us last week along with his director Nathan Wetherington, but actor JEFFREY DOORNBOS is with us live talking about getting into character, finding the soul of "Preston", and his performance in the powerful A THOUSAND MILES BEHIND. A longtime member of the acclaimed Blue Man Group in New York City, Jeffrey talks about how the creativity and lack of dialogue in his Blue Man performances proved an asset when finding the character of Preston in this film, as well as discussing working with Greg Evigan, Vanessa Campbell, and that Scrambler Ducati motorcycle, itself a character in the film. Jeffrey has some insightful thoughts on working with cinematographer Keith Dunkerley on becoming both one with the camera and distancing oneself while finding the emotional journey of the character and the film. A very interesting and fun conversation with Jeffrey! But before Jeffrey joins us, take a listen to our exclusive in-depth conversation with writer/director JOSHUA CALDWELL talking his latest film INFAMOUS. Timely and topical, INFAMOUS takes on even greater significance in light of recent socio-political events as we meet the characters "Arielle" and "Dean" who head off on a cross-country crime spree a la 21st-century Bonnie & Clyde. Fueling Arielle's fire is her obsession with social media fame, something upon which Joshua builds not only the story and the character, but the film's visuals. We leave no stone unturned as we delve into every level of storytelling from story and societal commentary to score to needle drops to cinematography and the use of handheld camera to color and costume to editing. It's wonderful to reconnect with Joshua and talk about his growth as a filmmaker and in bringing his voice to the forefront with INFAMOUS. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Let's say you desperately want to make a feature film, but you don't have any money to do it. Can you scrape together a few thousand? Good, because writer/director Joshua Caldwell and producer Travis Oberlander join us this week to explain how they made Layover for only $6,000. Beyond making a movie for a few months' rent, Geoff and I will answer your screenwriting questions and continue our star-spangled conversation from last week by exploring the concepts of Freedom and Revolution as they apply (for better and worse) to filmmaking. You should follow Caldwell (@joshua_caldwell), Travis Oberlander (@tobewan), the show (@brokenprojector), Geoff (@drgmlatulippe) and Scott (@scottmbeggs) on Twitter for more on a daily basis. I talk with Joshua Caldwell, director of MENDING THE LINE. It's part one of a two part episode. In this episode, we talk about making films in high school, the film school of just making films, and how he brought MENDING THE LINE to life in an industry that doesn't fund military and veteran films. How did he do that? What choices did he make to appeal to the widest audience? Every director who wants to film post traumatic stress scenes should listen to the care Joshua gives the topic in his film. It's a must-listen.So is part 2.Links:MENDING THE LINE (https://www.sonypictures.com/movies/mendingtheline)Joshua Caldwell Website (https://www.meyd-ent.com/)Joshua Caldwell, 6k Filmmaker Site (https://www.6kfilmmaker.com/enroll)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/donations

I finish my conversation with Joshua Caldwell in part two of our series. In the first episode (#15), we talk about his new feature MENDING THE LINE, a story about two veterans successfully battling post traumatic stress through fly fishing. We also talk about Joshua's career, how he became a filmmaker, and I highly recommend you listen to that episode before you listen here.In this episode, we talk short films, film school, crowdfunding, and what he calls live environment filmmaking. In an uncertain environment for emerging filmmakers, he offers hard-won lessons in the trenches of independent film. If you are here for advice, episode 17 with Joshua Caldwell is the episode for you.Links:6k Filmmaker (https://www.6kfilmmaker.com/)MENDING THE LINE (https://www.sonypictures.com/movies/mendingtheline)Joshua Caldwell's Website (https://www.meyd-ent.com/)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/donations
