Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Isaiah Weatherspoon, a Philadelphia-based drummer who started playing at the age of four. He went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Production and Engineering. Over the years, Isaiah has performed with an impressive roster of artists, including Lizz Wright, Greg Phillinganes, Lauren Talese, Leehom Wang, Justin Timberlake, Sister Sledge, and many more. I first noticed Isaiah when I saw a video on Instagram of him using one of our Big Fat Snare Drum Steve's Donuts on his floor tom during an outdoor concert. He was going crazy on the drums, and I was truly impressed. His positive energy and outlook made this conversation a real pleasure. Plus, we dive into a fascinating topic: synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon that Isaiah proudly embraces. So, without further ado, here are the five records that have shaped Isaiah Weatherspoon into the musician he is today. Cheers! Check out his book: MUSIC IS COOL! In our life we as believers often forget who we are in God. During this "I AM" series my focus for you as a believer is to grab hold of your faith, and begin to declare and decree by using two powerful words "I AM". The enemy does not like it when you tell him who you are in God. Begin each day, all day and every day declaring boldly over your life "I AM"! You were bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus personally too carried our sins in his body on the cross. You are Redeemed from Death because of the Blood of Jesus that covers and protects you. Tune in with Minister Kendrick Scott on the Kingdom Rock Network as he declares "I AM Redeemed ", during this powerful, and encouraging series. This is part 4 of the " I AM" series kingdomrock.org

Renowned composer and drummer Kendrick Scott is putting anecdotes of his learnings from mentor and distinguished trumpeter, Terence Blanchard, into action by leveraging his musical gifts into a visceral artform of healing and redemption. Through original music mixed with poetry and striking visuals, the multimedia event entitled, “UNEARTHED,” featured Scott collaborating with former Houston poet laureate, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, the acclaimed Harlem String Quartet along with a trio of talented jazz musicians. Hosted by the arts organization, DACAMERA, the production served as a tribute to the tragic history behind “Sugar Land 95,” the collective name given to the 94 Black men and one woman who were part of a state-run convict leasing program of the late 1800s following the abolition of slavery. Their bodies, buried in unmarked graves, were discovered five years ago during an excavation project in the now trendy suburb of Sugar Land, Texas. I SEE U ventured offsite to tour an exhibit of the Sugar Land 95 Memorial Project in Episode #46. Efforts to expand the memorial are currently underway with the construction of an outdoor learning area and a revitalized cemetery slated to be completed by 2025. In this week's episode, host Eddie Robinson chats in-studio with Houston-native, Kendrick Scott about his decision to shed light on an untold, dark history. We'll hear exclusive audio excerpts from the one-night-only event which premiered in May at Houston's Wortham Theater. Scott also shares inspiration behind the creation of his band, Oracle and reveals how the pandemic, the quarantining, as well as the isolation all played a significant role in the recording of his latest Blue Note release, Corridors. Check out our companion Spotify playlist that celebrates acclaimed composer, drummer and Houston-native, Kendrick Scott. This playlist includes Scott's many inspirations, current collaborators and heroes.

In this episode, host Noah Kellman sits down with modern jazz piano master Aaron Parks, a forward-thinking musician who first came to the public's attention during his time with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. In this episode, Aaron & Noah discuss two-handed solo piano techniques, modern improvisation concepts, advanced rhythm exercises, and more. You can also hear performances by Aaron solo, as well as the two playing duo. Born in Seattle, Washington, Parks began playing piano at a young age and by the time he was 14 had enrolled in an early entrance degree program at the University of Washington. Parks has released several albums under his own name, including his 2008 Blue Note debut, Invisible Cinema. Parks, who has also recorded with Christian Scott, Kendrick Scott, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, was an integral part of the James Farm Quartet with Joshua Redman, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland.

After spending the first part of his career in the New York-based jazz world, Corey Fonville has evolved into playing and producing more groove-based music. With his band Butcher Brown and most recently with Charlie Hunter and Kurt Elling on new album SuperBlue, Corey is exploring playing and tones that are firmly in the supporting role rather than the more explosive/interactive jazz role. Corey is the product of a couple of non-traditional educational environments; The New School in New York and the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA, and his jazz resume includes Christian Scott, Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson and many more. But he has found himself moving past that world in search of drumming and music that's more true to his musical identity and values. In this episode, Corey talks about: How the SuperBlue project came about, and how Charlie and Kurt turned to him to help shape it Being a bridge between Kurt's energy and Charlie's energy Being influenced by Kareem Riggins, Kendrick Scott, Obed Calvaire, and other New York jazz drummers How sounding like other drummers is a step in the journey to sounding like you Ways he's thinking about combining his new musical identity with the jazz world he used to inhabit, and approaching jazz with a production mindset How turning something down or moving away from a certain music requires self-acceptance
