The People's Temple in Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, The Order of the Solar Temple. All cults that ended in tragic mass suicides. How could such lofty aspirations end so badly? For today's self-contained installment of The Roots of Conspirituality series, Julian explores the shadow side of the anxiety-relieving religious notion that death is just a doorway into a better place. How do charismatic prophets indoctrinate believers into ending their lives, and often the lives of their children, in the name of spirituality? Julian briefly examines each of these groups, along with Paul Nthenge Mackenzie's Good News International Ministry—450 of whose followers starved themselves to death in a Kenyan forest in 2023. Then he transitions into exploring philosophical, psychological, evolutionary, and neuroscience-based ways of understanding the elements that make these spiritualized perversions of our survival instincts possible. Wellness influencers are perfecting the art of turning pseudoscience into profit. Whether they're selling supplements, offering classes, or just chasing engagement, an army of wellness grifters has weaponized mistrust of institutions and Big Pharma, peddling false health claims that trick people into treatments and practices that are ineffective at best, and in some cases outright dangerous. Last week the Trump administration claimed without evidence that Tylenol during pregnancy causes autism. The science is clear that it isn't true, but that didn’t matter. Doctors pushed back, but the damage was already done—because wellness influencers pounced. They didn’t just spread the fear, they profited off it. And suddenly, one of the only safe pain relievers for pregnant women became the latest weapon in a war over women’s health. Once again, Trump and RFK Jr are playing disingenuous, dangerous political games with women's health and wellbeing. This isn’t just about Tylenol. It’s about how wellness influencers turn misinformation into a business model—and how their influence helped shape a dangerous narrative straight out of the White House. Mallory DeMille, content creator and correspondent on the podcast Conspirituality, has been pushing back against these dangerous grifters with hilarious videos and posts that make fun of their most ridiculous claims. As former conspiracists turned debunking enthusiasts, we were keen to explore its effectiveness from our unique vantage point. We simulated our past selves and presented DebunkBot with some of the prominent 9/11-related conspiracy theories, such as the controlled demolition theory, the NORAD war games, and the lack of CCTV footage at the Pentagon. The conversation with DebunkBot was enlightening. It provided detailed responses to each point we raised, explaining the structural collapse of the Twin Towers with insights on building construction and weight distribution, clarifying the routine nature of NORAD's war games and the ensuing initial confusion among responders, and delving into the technical limitations of the Pentagon's CCTV footage during the attack. The bot was well-equipped with official narratives backed by credible evidence from multiple lines of sources, such as physical plane components, eyewitness testimony, and flight data.Despite the solid responses, we identified several areas where DebunkBot fell short. The explanations, although factually sound, often lacked the depth required to sway deeply entrenched conspiracy theorists. The chatbot delivered answers that were too straightforward, potentially missing the layers of skepticism that seasoned conspiracy believers entertain. We observed that it could appear patronizing and insufficient for those ingrained in these beliefs. To enhance DebunkBot's effectiveness, we suggested a few improvements:1. **Deeper Engagement**: Incorporate more nuanced discussions that consider the various levels of skepticism and alternate narratives conspiracy theorists might hold.2. **Personalized Responses**: Tailor responses to align with the specific doubts or assumptions the questioning individual may harbor, bridging the gap between casual skepticism and deep-seated belief.3. **Interactive Evidence Presentation**: Use interactive elements to present evidence in a more compelling and engaging manner, such as visual aids or comparisons that directly counter alternate theories.4. **Audience Trust Building**: Develop strategies to build trust with users who inherently distrust official narratives, perhaps by showing behind-the-scenes transparency of how evidence is verified and vetted.5. **Expanded Fact-Checking Capabilities**: Ensure the bot can access a broader range of verifiable sources and provide real-time links to comprehensive, detailed explanations and rebuttals.6. **Tone and Approach Variation**: Offer different tones of responses, from formal to jokey, to make the interaction more relatable and less confrontational.Ultimately, our test of DebunkBot demonstrated that while it's a promising tool for debunking conspiracy theories with credible evidence, there is a significant need for adjustments to more effectively engage and persuade those deeply immersed in conspiracy thinking. As such, continued refinement and enhancing its capability to address both surface-level and deeply ingrained queries hold the key to its wider acceptance and success.Try DebunkBot yourself at https://www.debunkbot.com/ Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/some-dare-call-it-conspiracy--5932731/support.
Levitation, world peace, and blissful enlightenment were all essential to the hippie counterculture. But it came at quite a price. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi made billions selling magical mantras and the promise of perfect happiness. Most well-known for being endorsed by the Beatles and David Lynch, he was also feted by world leaders and prestigious universities. The true story behind this 5'1” marketing genius is complex and layered: illicit sex, paranormal promises, alternative medicine, palatial estates, overpriced courses, bogus quantum physics, indoctrinated children, and mass group meditation combined with “yogic flying” would supposedly bring about world peace. For his latest stand-alone episode in the Roots of Conspirituality series, Julian dives deep into the money-scented blissful waters of Transcendental Meditation and reports back on the sharks that swim beneath the surface. His black belt in paranormal martial arts, three past lives as a Buddhist teacher, 31 meditation albums he claimed to compose in other dimensions, multiple computer software companies, and a bestseller based on being a “world-class snowboarder” were all smoke and mirrors. He had no training or talent in any of these areas. He was an expert con man, however. The man wore Versace suits and Rolex watches, bought mansions, and owned a collection of pricey cars. His headshots were by the top Hollywood photographer of the day; he made many TV appearances. His students believed he could fill rooms with golden light, skate on light-beams, and protect them from the demons he claimed wanted to steal their enlightened energy. He instructed them to be celibate but then manipulated and coerced the prettiest into joining him for tantric sex rituals he claimed would accelerate their enlightenment. It didn't end well for anyone—including him. His work examines new and alternative religious movements, secularism, and the intersections of religion, politics, and sexuality. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Pretoria, where his thesis explored sex magick as post-theistic spirituality across Eastern, Western, and African esotericism. He also holds an MDiv (focused on Systematic & Historical Theology) and BDiv (focused on Dogmatics & Christian Ethics). As an advocate for the normalisation and destigmatisation of secularism, alternative religions, and marginalised spiritualities, Tristán engages in public education, media commentary, and community support. Hello Initiates! A little something different for you this week! The first of our two part, 4 1/2 hour deep dive into the notorious Turner Diaries - a book so extreme, we had to double-check it wasn't satire. Spoiler: it's deadly serious, but that didn't stop us from bringing our signature irreverence to the discussion. Here, in Part One, we break down the early chapters and try to make sense of the book's wildest claims.. from drive-by bombings to the jaw-dropping idea that feminism would somehow lead to the legalization of rape. The hateful rhetoric is appalling, but the logic is so twisted, sometimes all you can do is laugh. We don't pull punches calling out the racism, misogyny, and antisemitism, but we also make sure to highlight just how preposterous and self-defeating these arguments are. Because honestly, ridicule is one of the best tools we have against hate.Throughout the episode, we reflect on how far society has come (and how far we still have to go) in challenging bigotry and conspiracy thinking. With Greg Hall's insights and our own lived experiences, we connect the dots between these extremist ideas and the rhetoric we see online today. So join us as we take on The Turner Diaries armed with critical thinking, a refusal to let hate go unchallenged, and, as always, a healthy dose of SDCIC humour. It's grim, it's outrageous, but we promise it's never boring.- We introduce The Turner Diaries and its author, William Pierce, setting the stage for why this book matters in extremist circles.- Break down the early plot: the “Organization's” violent tactics, including bombings and drive-by attacks.- Highlight the book's ludicrous leaps in logic—especially its claim that feminism leads to the legalization of rape.- Call out the novel's overt racism, antisemitism, and scapegoating, exposing its conspiracy tropes.- Discuss how the book frames liberalism, feminism, and civil rights as existential threats.- Share our real-time reactions to the most shocking and preposterous passages.- Draw parallels between the book's arguments and today's far-right talking points and online discourse.- Reflect on how attitudes toward race, gender, and tolerance have changed—and why challenging bigotry is crucial.- Greg Hall brings context on the roots of modern extremist rhetoric and the dangers of normalizing hate.- Through it all, we tackle the book's absurdities with our signature SDCIC humour, making sure even the darkest material gets the ridicule it deserves.LISTEN TO PART TWO: https://www.patreon.com/posts/turner-diaries-132792226AD FREE EPISODES ARE AVAILABLE AT https://www.patreon.com/somedarecallitconspiracy FOR JUST $2 PER MONTH TWO EPISODES PER WEEK AVAILABLE FOR $5 (PATREONS ARE CURRENTLY 5 EPISODES OF T.W.A.T.S. Note: you can watch the Youtube version of this podcast here.___Well, the saga around Aubrey Marcus continues. You may recall a few weeks back when I spoke about Aubrey, an American entrepreneur, influencer, and “psychonaut”, who released an episode of his podcast with his wife Vylana, their lover Alana, and their mentor Marc Gafni. The main reveal was that during a trip to Egypt, Aubrey received a “download” from the goddess Isis instructing him to “impregnate both women.”They described this not as polyamory but as “radical monogamy.”Their episode originally titled “A New Pattern of Sacred Relationship" created a wide cultural ripple, sparking deep conversations around sex, relationships, monogamy/polyamory, spiritual bypassing, divine union, cult dynamics, and more.In my initial response with Deus Fortier, a central point I emphasized was the crucial role of community in holding the intense energies of intimacy and sex — something we learned through our years documenting Tamera, the radical “free love” community in Portugal, and featured in our film The Village of Lovers.Following that newsletter, a mutual friend connected me directly with Aubrey. I invited him and his partners to watch The Village of Lovers. They did - and they loved it.This opened the door for a deeper, more nuanced conversation directly between Aubrey and I, which is available now.In this new interview, Aubrey and I explore:* The cultural impact and backlash to his original podcast — and whether he can truly receive and integrate some of the core critiques rather than dismiss them only as a “witch hunt.”* His evolving understanding of power, influence, and community accountability — including reflections on the risks of spiritual grandiosity.* The difference between personal sovereignty and relational ecology, no matter your relationship container* The question of whether “downloads” or divine guidance can ever be fully trusted outside a community context.* The tension between individual desires and collective responsibility in love and intimacy.* What it would look like to truly embed these experiments in a supportive, truth-telling community.Rather than a debate or a takedown, this is a respectful invitation to wonder together. We seek to illuminate the edges and complexities of relational evolution - for ourselves and for all who are navigating love in these turbulent times.__ Note: This conversation has already been out almost a week, and while I've received a number of positive reviews, I want to address one of the main criticisms: my decision not to bring up the presence and influence of Marc Gafni. Someone even made the assertion that Aubrey must have “made a deal” with me prior to the interview. In truth, Aubrey and I didn't speak at about what we would cover. I made the call for two reasons: Watching almost 2 hours of a podcast where Aubrey interviews Marc and his partner Kristina Kincaid spend a lot of time speaking to the controversy from their perspective. Aubrey also responded to the controversy around Marc in the follow up newsletter to the the “Sacred Relationship” podcast:"Finally as a last note, I've already addressed the historic controversy surrounding our lineage teacher Dr. Marc Gafni in a podcast that I did with his life partner Kristina Kincaid. I've read the published letters of analysis from those who have analyzed the issues well, and spoken to people who have known him for decades. I trust his goodness and his greatness. But more important than any of that, is what I feel in my own body after the hundreds of hours we have spent together with him and his partner. Whether that is grieving together for ten days after the death of my father, grinding out sets with a barbell, or raising cups of wine with a bellowing “CHAAAAAAA.” He's a brother, he's my teacher, and he's not my guru. Marc has been unwaveringly loving and fair to each of us individually in this relationship process, seeking only to serve our own highest sovereign will."To be clear: do I believe the presence of Marc and his influence is troubling? Yes. Do I find it odd that he plays in the original conversation with Vylana and Alana, where he contributes to the confusing and spiritual jargon? Yes.And yet, confronting Aubrey one more time about this did not seem a worthwhile avenue given he would have just repeated what he's already said. There was zero chance, in my opinion, about him changing is stance. And overall, my conversation aimed to be about Aubrey and his relational explorations with his partners, and not about Marc Gafni. There are plenty of podcasts and videos out there that critique Marc and Aubrey. (For example, this Conspirituality one is a doozy). The goal in my conversation with Aubrey was not to cover all the bases, but to bring in some additional pieces that would contribute to the collective feedback loop. Once again, you're invited to watch The Village of Lovers to understand more deeply the lens I was attempting to offer. This is a public episode. He built a lucrative seminar empire in the 80s, owned an Italian Villa, founded a “spiritual university,” and travelled the world with a harem of handsome young initiates. Roger Hinkins claimed to be inhabited by another consciousness that he called “John the Beloved” and the “Mystical Traveller,” which taught the secrets of out-of-body experiences. As he copied those teachings from elsewhere, his lies eventually caught up with him. But he told his loyal followers that critics and defectors were infected with an infectious demonic energy called “The Red Monk.” For this self-contained installment of his popular Roots of Conspirituality series, Julian tells the fascinating story the Movement for Spiritual Inner Awareness, and how its leader fooled devotees into thinking he was clairvoyant. From 1999-2002, VH1 ran a show called “Where Are They Now?” The irregularly produced series wondered aloud what happened to former cultural icons like eighties hair metal bands, kid actors, and one-hit wonders. While some people remained surprisingly relevant, most were confined to, at best, appearing at VFWs and regional summer festivals in parking lots or, tragically, gripped by an addiction and dreams of a better time that they couldn't make last. Two years ago this month our book, Conspirituality, was published. We called one section Rogue's Gallery to highlight a range of figures we've covered on the podcast. One of those chapters was dedicated to a man named Robert F Kennedy, Jr—don't say we didn't warn you. How about the other nine? In our own version of “Where Are They Now,” we're going to turn back the clock and revisit those other nine chapters. We'll do it over three episodes in the coming weeks. This week, we begin with famed women's health expert turned harp-playing conspiracy peddler, Christiane Northrup; self-proclaimed philosopher king, Charles Eisenstein; and former model turned middling new age filmmaker turned anti-vax documentarian Mikki Willis. Susannah Crockford is a lecturer in anthropology, specialising in environmental and medical anthropology and the anthropology of religion. Her first book, Ripples of the Universe: Spirituality in Sedona, Arizona, explored New Age Spirituality of the Mecca of all things New Agey in the States. I came across her work as I was trying to get a stronger grounding of the harmful overlap between neoliberal individualism and health, wellness and spirituality. It's a dangerous combination, and Susannah has put in a lot of good work exploring this from an anthropological perspective. One of the results of economic individualism dancing with health and wellness is a growing feeling among many that I can't trust anyone but myself and the products I purchase. This collective paranoia is infecting big sections of our population. This isn't the ‘let's bash those crazy new agers who believe wild theories about the nature of the world' – it's a look beneath what's going on at the surface. This is often a demographic who have been let down by the medical sector, who are disillusioned with modern politics and who have been directed down the slip road of simple explanations of why things are the way they are. I think this will prove helpful for anyone who wants to learn more about the forces behind the growing divisiveness and the lack of agreement on the truth. Also, if you have been exposed to conspiratorial media or a friend of yours has, this might give you an important perspective with which to view what is going on. American New Age culture isn't all crystals and Tarot cards. A New World Order? The Aryan race? Alien-human hybrids? Throughout history, New Age belief systems have so often been blended with wild, and sometimes dangerous, conspiracy theories that academics have coined the term “conspirituality.” This week, we journey into murky waters of Love Has Won, a New Age spiritual group whose leader passed away in 2021. By the time authorities found her body that April, she had been dead for weeks. Her followers had camped with her body, slept with it in tents, and crossed state lines to fashion a shine out of her mummified corpse. We're joined by journalist and author Leah Sottile. Leah's book Blazing Eye Sees All investigates American New Age culture and examines how self-proclaimed prophetesses, like Love Has Won's Amy Carlson, have managed to create kingdoms for themselves. It begins with a failed human sacrifice in Detroit in 1932. Some would say it actually starts with an evil god-scientist who created the first white people—white devils, really—some 6,000 years ago. Either way, the Nation of Islam has had an important cultural and political presence for almost a century in America. Today's installment of Julian's Roots of Conspirituality series covers the incredible real world history of this extremist new religious movement, as well as its outlandish sci-fi mythological theology. When the aliens landed, they told a young musician and wannabe race car driver that he was the chosen one, and they were the real gods. He should build them an embassy with a UFO landing pad in order to prepare humanity for their arrival. They taught him the secrets of sex meditation and cloning DNA as a way to keep switching bodies and never die. Not much in his story was original, but this was the 1970s, so free love hippies flocked to his French commune—then it all turned to shit. Somehow Claude kept landing on his feet. He took his schtick to Quebec, then Japan, and even found thousands of followers in Africa. Still no embassy, no divine alien arrival, no cloned human babies—but he kept raising funds from the gullible and living like a king with a ballerina bride 40 years his junior. For the latest installment in Roots of Conspirituality series, Julian muses on the epic tale of the Raelians. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Within days of recording the "This Is Fine" episode, it became clear to both of us that this had everything SDCIC was about. This episode gave us the opportunity to debunk conspiracy theories and counter disinformation on a play by play basis. It gave us a chance to share our unique perspectives and personal experiences at times. And of course, the privilege to roast the nuttiest of these cultists. So we're going to continue making this series as the bulk of the show for now.. but don't worry! We will still make deep dives! “You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, start a religion.” With those words, prolific sci-fi pulp fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard prophesied the course of his life's work. The 1950s saw the emergence of UFO- and alien channeling-based spiritual groups, as postmodern religious syncretism transformed supposedly ancient angels and demons into benevolent and/or terrifying aliens. No iteration of this fantasy has been more financially fruitful, culturally impactful, controversial, or bizarre than Hubbard's brainchild: Scientology. In the latest episode of Roots of Conspirituality, Julian digs into the fascinating backstory of this prolific author, revered as prophetic by thousands, pursued as a fraud by the IRS for decades, described as a cult leader by church escapees, and called an abusive madman by his ex-wives. Allegedly… The religion is a complex blend of self-help psychology, elaborate pseudoscience, high-demand paranoia, and alien mythology that, at its height, commanded 100,000 members—and is still valued at roughly $2 billion. Barris explains how "conspirituality" merges left-leaning new-age beliefs with right-wing political ideologies, often exploiting distrust in institutions like healthcare. They explore how wellness influencers leverage emotional appeal, certainty, and fear-mongering to market alternative health solutions. They also discuss how a strong focus on individualism contributes to the spread of medical misinformation and how social media plays a big role in making these ideas more popular. The conversation also touches on figures like RFK Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, which advocates for food regulation while paradoxically aligning with deregulation-focused politics. Dr Block and Barris went further to discuss how physicians can push back by fostering trust, communicating uncertainty effectively, and engaging in social media discourse. Directed by first time documentary directors Haley Pappas and Smiley Stevens, Breath of Fire was released on MAX in October as a four-part documentary series. Breath of Fire is based on the 2021 Vanity Fair piece The Second Coming of Guru Jagat by Hayley Phelan, who also appears in and executive produced the series. It tells the story of Kundalini yoga practitioner turned de facto cult leader/professional grifter Katie Griggs, known to her followers as Guru Jagat. Throughout its four hours, Breath of Fire touches on some recurring themes and questions, such as the power of religious fraud, abuse, orientalism, and what exactly it is that people rally want from religion. This week, Kelly and John try to unpack its often enlightening, often disturbing implications.

So... what do 5G microwaves, a clothing line made of tin foil, and a bunch of confiscated dildos have in common? Is this even a spiritual podcast anymore? Wtf am I listening to?We're back on our bullshit. In this Serendipity Session, we dive headfirst into the absurd, the spiritual, and the conspiratorial. Eyebrows will be raised, but we don't give a fuck. We cover everything from M.I.A.'s new anti-5G fashion line (because, apparently, 5G protection is high fashion now), to P. Diddy's arrest and the authorities' peculiar discovery of his, um, adult extracurricular props. But wait, there's more! Along the way, we talk about the dangers of TikTok baby witches casting spells like it's a high school chemistry experiment, and we go off on white girls who jump into spirituality with no shame about colonizing closed spiritual practices from other cultures. We discuss the philosophical Ship of Theseus (because, duh, you need to learn something esoteric in every episode). And we also explore the weird dynamics that arise when spiritual readers try to read for other spiritual readers (spoiler alert: it doesn't always go well). If you're in the mood for some Clairannoyance chaos mixed with on-the-spot spiritual insights, you've landed on the right episode. As we journey through Virgo season and prepare to enter Libra season this September, we find ourselves in a space of discernment and refinement. The universe invites us to listen for the calls that echo through our lives this month, so we can learn to respond with clarity, purpose, and virtue. Before diving into the month's major astrology transits, we begin with a deep dive of the Virgo zodiac sign and archetype. We discover why Virgo wants us to master the art of separation and purification. Drawing inspiration from the myth of Echo and Narcissus, we examine what happens when calls go unanswered or are met with misunderstanding, highlighting the importance of self-awareness and self-refinement before engaging with the world. Through this lens, we explore Virgo's role as the cosmic mediator between the self-focused energy of Leo and the relational focus of Libra. Understanding Virgo is a crucial step in our personal and spiritual evolution. Each celestial event this months presents a unique "calling" — a cosmic invitation we're meant to "respond" to with discernment, adaptability, and insight. Important questions, or callings, are being asked of you: What can you purify in your life? How can you prepare yourself to respond to the calls that matter most? And how do you know the difference between the noise of the world and the true calling of your soul?Themes and transits discussed in this episode include:The symbolism of "call and response" as an overall theme for the monthVirgo's crucial role as the sign between Leo and LibraVirgo as the Maiden and the BirdThe myth of Echo & NarcissusThe New Moon in Virgo (Sept. 2)The Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces (Sept. 17)Mars enters Cancer (Sept. 4)Mercury enters Virgo (Sept. 8)Sun enters Libra - Fall Equinox (Sept. 22)Venus enters Scorpio (Sept. 22)Mercury enters Libra (Sept. 26)Uranus turns Retrograde and Pluto Retrograde re-enters Capricorn (Sept. 1)Mercury follows the Sun's footsteps all month longMercury Cazimi in Libra (Sept. 30)Extra Days of Caution (Sept. 15 and 22)Extra Days of Opportunity (Sept. 3, 11, 14, and 29)******************Resources Mentioned in this Episode:Article: The Myth of Echo & Narcissus Article: Speech Acts******************Podcast & Host Links:Clairannoyance InstagramClairannoyance TikTokClairannoyance WebsiteMegan's InstagramMegan's TikTokMegan's WebsiteRyan's InstagramRyan's TikTokRyan's Website

A short break-the-fourth-wall reflection from Matthew on his new regular series for our main feed, starting in September. The Conspirituality Relief Project will provide regular timeline-cleanser interviews in which super interesting guests reflect on hope, faith, resilience, and building community in hard times. You know, all of the things that conspirituality itself promises to do, but can't, or won't. Every guest gets thirty minutes, and the same five questions: What terrifies you most in these times? What is the most meaningful and supportive idea or story you return to for reliable wisdom and relief? What is the greatest obstacle you face in forming community relationships, and how do you work to overcome it? If you were responsible for comforting and guiding a child terrified of climate catastrophe, how would you do it? What would you say? This is the second episode in “Conspirituality and the Imaginary Children,” an occasional series on how children, as symbols (but not persons with their own internal lives) are at the center of conspirituality anxiety and discourse. The title is taken from a pamphlet published by Ralph Drollinger, a former professional basketball player from San Diego who founded a 501c3 called Capitol Ministries in 1996 to facilitate prayer meetings and study guides for congresspeople in Washington, and state legislators in more than 40 states. Drollinger's crowning achievement was to initiate a weekly Bible study group in the White House during the Trump administration. The 60-90 minutes were regularly attended by ten Trump cabinet members. Like many evangelicals, Drollinger argues that spanking children is mandated by the Bible But he also goes a Trumpian extra mile—explicitly connecting the virtue of child assault in the home to the state's monopoly on violence. Matthew walks through what this looks like and how Drollinger justifies it through narrow and dishonest readings of scripture. The late historian of religion James Carse (1932-2020) made a radical proposal in his 2012 book, The Religious Case Against Belief. He argued that beliefs, far from being central to or definitive of religion, are actually antithetical to religious community. A religion's historical longevity, he argued, depends on its ability to absorb and neutralize beliefs—epistemological dead ends built on willful ignorance. “The challenge to religion,” Carse says, “is not its opponents from without, but its believers from within, and the real enemy of religion is belief itself.” What does this mean for a project like Conspirituality and other projects of disillusionment carried out in the shadow of New Atheism and other modern skeptical movements? Blair Hodges of the Fireside and Family Proclamations podcasts joins Matthew to discuss a potential casualty of the battle against religious extremism: a nuanced understanding of religion itself. In this series of audio essays, Matthew will examine how children as symbols—but not persons with their own internal lives—are at the center of conspirituality anxiety and discourse. There are two types of imaginary child in conspirituality. One is an object of dread. The other is an idol of aspiration. In the realm of dread we have fetuses murdered by late term abortion, children who are trafficked, made autistic by vaccines, sexualized by pornography in elementary school, or mutilated by trans activist doctors. In the realm of idols we have newborn babies sliding like dolphins into warm birthing tubs after a mere hour of ecstatic, medically-unassisted home births. We have little girls in prairie dresses or first communion veils who must be protected from library drag queens or woke grade school teachers. We have starseeds and indigo children who carry prophecies from the great beyond. We often reflect on the problem of authority on this podcast. Who are our leaders, and what gives them power? Why do conspiracists default to God to corroborate fantasies? What gap in cultural fatherhood is Jordan Peterson trying to fill? With this series, Matthew looks in the other direction: what does the conspirituality crowd do with its own authority? How do misgivings, regrets and shame in relation to children get inflated and projected into moral panics? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
