What can we learn about a country from its favourite sport? A lot. Particularly when that country has a history and culture like Germany. Which is what I'm exploring on this episode.Even if you're not a football fan, this episode — in a year when Germany goes to the polls — will have something of interest.Episode Summary On this episode, I speak with Kit Holden, a British-German journalist and author whose love for German football has led him to uncover the rich tapestry of stories behind the Bundesliga.Kit's perspective as an "insider, yet outsider" allows him to explore not just what happens on the pitch but also the cultural and societal dynamics that shape the game in Germany. From the legendary 50+1 ownership rule to the passionate fan culture that prioritizes community, we discuss what sets German football apart.Kit shares his experiences writing two books: Scheisse, We're Going Up, chronicling Union Berlin's extraordinary journey from underdog to Champions League contender, and Played in Germany, a deep dive into how football reflects the soul of the nation. Our conversation delves into topics such as fan ownership, regional identities, and the challenges of maintaining tradition while engaging a global audience. Whether you're a football fanatic or a newcomer, this episode offers insights into the intersection of sport, society, and storytelling. We also explore Kit's craft as a journalist, how his bilingual skills and cultural curiosity enable him to connect with fans, players, and club officials, and the lessons football can teach us about resilience and identity. With stories that span the Ruhr Valley to the rise of East German clubs, this episode will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the beautiful game and its deeper meanings.Guest Biography Kit is a British-German journalist and author based in Berlin. In 2008, Union Berlin played in the third division in German football. They were best known for the extraordinary atmosphere at their unique stadium, the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which is surrounded by forest in East Berlin. But long term financial challenges for the club meant the stadium was becoming too run down to use. The team was at risk of having to move, until fans volunteered in their thousands to take on the renovation work themselves. Lifelong Union fan Sylvia Weisheit oversaw the project, and she tells her story to Kit Holden. This is a Whistledown production for the BBC World Service.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive and testimony. Sporting Witness is for those fascinated by sporting history. Rory is joined by English-German author and journalist Kit Holden to talk about one of Germany's most interesting clubs: 1. FC Union Berlin! From their growth under the DDR to playing in the Champions League, Union Berlin have a phenomenal story and a unique fanbase. The circumstances of their existence, growth and identity make them one of the most interesting clubs to discuss from a heritage perspective, and as they become established in the Bundesliga, they continue to ride a fine balance between staying true to their roots and selling out completely. Rory and Kit discuss the history of Union Berlin and the issues, events and conditions which led to their label as a 'rebel club', the identities of the fans and their role in the club and how Union traversed the oppression of East Germany to navigating modern capitalist football. Kit is the author of 'Scheisse! We're Going Up!', a book which documented the rise of Union Berlin and the crossroads they found themselves at at the time of writing. He has covered football for Der Tagesspiegel and AFP, and he has also written for The Athletic, Guardian and Die Zeit. His second book 'Played in Germany' is set for release in June 2024.

Over the past five years, sometimes it's felt like 1. FC Union Berlin could only go up. The Köpenickers' rise from little-club-that-could to European contender has been among the best in world football over that span, but now it's come to an end after Urs Fischer, the coach who took them from the 2. Bundesliga to the UEFA Champions League, decided they'd be better off without him. For a little insight on how it all went down, Matt turns to Kit Holden, who covers the Irons for Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper, as well as talks it out with Nik and Terry. They also get into what might be ailing the suddenly lame Borussia Dortmund and investor talk swirling around Werder Bremen and the league as a whole. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talking-fussball/support

The Bundesliga kicks off this weekend! Union Berlin plays their season opener against Mainz on Sunday. On today's show, we talk about Union Berlin's two American players, Brenden Aaronson and Jordan Pefok, and what to expect from them this season. We'll also do a more general overview of the club for those that haven't watched a lot of them in the past. To help me with this topic, I've invited Kit Holden to join the show. Kit is a British-German author and journalist who lives and works in Berlin. He writes regularly on Union Berlin for Der Tagesspiegel, a German daily newspaper. He's also the author of a recent book on Union Berlin, Scheisse! We're Going Up!: The Unexpected Rise of Berlin's Rebel Football Club. You can follow Kit on Twitter at: @KitHolden

Could 1. FC Union Berlin be on the verge of something truly magical? They brushed aside their cross-town rivals Hertha for the fifth derby on the trot and are now within one point of FC Bayern München. After the Rekordmeister limped through the English week with nothing but draws, there's a chance their season could end without (gasp!) the usual multi-trophy celebration. With Union and Bayern topping the docket, who else could Matt turn to but Kit Holden? The Scheisse! We're Going Up! author joins TFD from Vietnam - the lucky guy. Learn more about your ad choices. How do football fans in England and Germany perceive each other's top flights? Is the rivalry between England and Germany one-sided? As the Premier League and Bundesliga pause for the World Cup in Qatar, football journalists Raphael Honigstein (based in London for 'The Athletic') and Kit Holden (based in Berlin for the 'Tagesspiegel') have a wide-ranging chat about the different approaches to football in the UK and Germany and also discuss the controversy surrounding the Christmas World Cup.

Bayern Munich won its 10th consecutive Bundesliga title over the weekend, but this season is still being considered a disappointment by the club and many of its supporters. 1. FC Union Berlin made it three for three in the German capital's Stadtmeisterschaft this past weekend, giving everyone another plum opportunity to gawk at the mess Hertha BSC has become. After an extra day to survey the wreckage, a crestfallen Matt hauls in Kit Holden for their traditional tête-à-tête. They talk about the derby, Union's chances of heading back to Europe next season in a crowded field of aspirants, what Bayern need to do to get past Villareal, Leipzig and Eintracht's chances in the Europa League and more. It's not every week Bundesliga fans witness Bayern slip up and lose to a side in the relegation zone - and see the Rekordmeister's main challenger win to keep the pressure up. But dang if Augsburg and Dortmund each played their parts and pulled it off. Thanks to that - and perhaps a self-inflicted case of COVID knuckle-headery on Säbener Strasse, a fresh wind of competition now blows through the Bundesliga. Matt invites AFP's Kit Holden on the pod to talk that over, along with a certain fixture that wasn't very competitive - the Berlin derby, at which Kit's 1. FC Union Berlin basically mopped the floor with Matt's Hertha BSC. Listen in as a new Stadtmeister is crowned! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
A thriller of a 3-3 draw between title hopefuls Bayern München and RB Leipzig was the headline game on Match Day 10. With draws and losses for the rest of the top six, it was Bayer Leverkusen who walked away the big winners. Apart from Hertha that is - the Old Lady held on to bragging rights in the Berlin derby. As is becoming tradition, Kit Holden drops by to talk with Matt about the big game; Nik acts as referee. Finally, Karan Tejwani is here to talk about his new book Wings of Change: how the world's biggest energy drinks company made its mark in football.

What with the UEFA Champions League and Europa League getting started this week, perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised to see a bit of a low-wattage weekend. Four 1-1 draws and only one team scoring more than two goals made for a few less fireworks, but didn't dent our enthusiasm for this week's guest. Matt sat down with his old pal Kit Holden, who's been working the Union beat for Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper. He's got lots to say about the Köpenickers' solid start, as well as ideas about which German sides have the best chances to put a real dent into European competition this season. In the middle of the show, Nik Wildhagen talks to Christian Woop, who's just completed a study on how the German press cover RB Leipzig - hear more of that interview on our Patreon page!

It going to happen sooner or later. FC Bayern München were going tire of their non-superstar coach and his non-superstar way of coaching superstars and send him packing. Eintracht Frankfurt just happened to speed the process up with a rousing 5-1 win and Bob's your uncle, Niko's gone. Matt rounds up Kit Holden for a chat on the dear departed Kovac, the sorry spectacle that was the Berlin derby, Wolfsburg's first loss, Leipzig's crazy eight, and much more.

Just two games in, it's early days in the Bundesliga - but the present pecking order is interesting enough to get our gears turning.
