Welcome to the fourth episode of this series of A Line Traced, which focuses on Female Pioneers in the History of Virtual Reality. The series is hosted by Paula Strunden, a transdisciplinary VR artist with a background in architecture who taught on the AA's Media Studies programme. In this episode, Paula interviews Char Davies, best known for her groundbreaking virtual reality artwork Osmose, which combines immersive environments, with embodied interactions, and a profound connection to nature. This series of A Line Traced uncovers the untold stories of female pioneers in the early history of VR. Many of the prevailing narratives within this history focus on technological advancements, the development of devices and figures dubbed the 'grandfather', 'father' and 'godfather' of VR. Yet when we investigate the experiences created during the first peak of the VR industry in the 1990s, many of the most significant contributions were made by women. Artists and theorists like Char Davies, Brenda Laurel, Monika Fleischman and Thamiko Thiel, to name a few, transcended the boundaries of binary thinking in the realm of human-computer interaction, interweaving the actual and the virtual, and the body and the mind. By tracing the lines connecting these women, along with the contemporary voice of Krista Kim, this series aims to reshape our understanding of VR's past and reframe the ongoing debates around the role of VR in architecture and in contemporary society.Host Bio:Paula Strunden is a transdisciplinary VR artist with a background in architecture. She has studied in Vienna, Paris and London, and worked at Raumlabor in Berlin and Herzog and de Meuron in Basel. The Aventador is coming to the end of its production run as Lamborghini electrifies its entire line-up. But intent to go out with a bang, the Italian supercar builder is selling the last ever Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae Coupé as a 1/1 NFT to be auctioned at Sotheby's. Aventador NFT is Lamborghini's last hurrah for petrol power The Lamborghini drop will be the world's first NFT-physical supercar auction. Responsible for creating the NFT artwork and music are contemporary artists Krista Kim and Steve Aoki. In describing her artistic inspiration for the project, Kim spoke of “higher states of consciousness” meeting with “leading-edge technology & design.” While Aoki, who was tasked with the soundtrack, said the music reflects the “soulful energy — the vibe, the spirit, and the power” of the car. Not only will the winning bidder own the last ever V12 petrol-powered Aventador, but they will also become immortalized as part of the brand's legacy and have access to a range of VIP benefits. This includes exclusive virtual previews of future limited edition Lamborghini models, a private tour of the Museo Lamborghini, and a virtual “Meet and Greet” with Aoki and Kim. The CEO of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, alluded to the NFT auction concept being an ideal way to usher in a new beginning for the firm. “we are projecting this car into the digital world. It's an end of an era, but it's also the start of a new beginning.” The death of the internal combustion engine The European Commission (EC) is set on introducing a zero-emissions target for vehicles sold after 2035. Commenting on this, Hildegard Müller, Head of Germany's VDA car lobby group said: “That would not only mean the end of the internal combustion engine, but also the end of plug-in hybrids.” Although insiders had warned the EC was planning such a move before the announcement was made in June 2021, it still came as something of a surprise. Electric cars, and their associated infrastructure, have a long way to go in terms of rivaling the convenience of filling up with petrol. Also, how would people who live in flats, or have no parking directly outside their property, charge their electric vehicles? The EC seems to be ignoring the devastating environmental and social effects of mining for battery minerals. For example, Congolese miners describe slave-like working conditions and practices as they dig for cobalt, earning as little as 30p ($0.40) an hour. Also, locals report contaminated water supply due to the use of large amounts of groundwater to extract lithium. Nonetheless, Lamborghini, and other manufacturers, are falling in line with the EC and pushing for all-electric line-ups. Bidding for the Aventador NFT drop opens on April 19, with the auction set to close on April 21.

Today's episode is slightly different as Jason is not interviewing a Fintech but an artist - Krista Kim. She made global headlines as being the first artist to sell a virtual home via a non-fungible token (NFT). Krista Kim is a contemporary artist and founder of the Techism movement and a global ambassador for the Superworld and creator of the Mars House, and a talented artist. In today's podcast, they will discuss “How technology is changing both the distribution and implementation of art?”Episode Highlights:1.10: Krista introduces herself as a digital artist, started creating digital artwork in 2013. While using smartphones, Krista observed how people were completely changing the dynamics of their social interactions because of social media platforms and how social media platforms were inferring cultures.1.18: As an artist, she thought, “We need to ensure that people are free thinkers going forward in the 21st century and beyond, but the big question was how do you do that?2.45: Krista says, “We have to have a daily practice of meditation because we have to strengthen our prefrontal cortex. It's a muscle that actually keeps us as freethinkers so that we're not perpetually addicted to our phones.”4.45: Jason refers to the filter bubbles that people have created; they only hear what they want to hear. 06.00 Jason says that they are going to discuss NFTS, digital art, and the metaverse in today's episode. He says that unlike cryptocurrencies, where the entire idea is to make transactions with them potentially, which is something called fungibility, the ability to spend something in one place versus the other. NFT or non-fungible token is a token that denotes value or ownership of something specific, and in this case one of the biggest use cases has been in the art realm.06.44: Jason inquires, “How did you get into NFT? What was the opportunity you saw that you clearly harvested?”7.10: Krista talks about her journey as a digital artist and her research on the blockchain of art. She became whitelisted as it gave power to the digital artist to sell their art properly as a rare piece of work.7.45: Personally, Krista felt that NFT was giving digital artists the power to sell their art properly as a rare piece of work, one or limited series. But an artist can control its rarity, and that is everything for a work of art.10.11: Jason says, “What we're seeing is just again another technology and especially Internet technology, basically starting to apply itself through yet another medium or another vertical of an industry which is artwork.”11.06: Krista explains the difference between NFT and a copy of the NFT.11.40 Jason denotes that “People have a hard time wrapping their head around digital currencies.” He gives an example of the games like Diablo or World of Warcraft, where even before there were markets that were built into these things, people were selling armor or weapons on eBay and transacting real currency and then meeting virtually to deliver on the actual product sold. 12.36: Krista affirms Jason's views and asks him to look at Mars house. She shares why Mars houses became such a global story? It is because it really is a marker, overtime, and it is the harbinger for our augmented reality lifestyle that is coming around the corner. XR lifestyle. The Metaverse NFTs are going into the metaverse, and that is the next generation. 17.00: According to Krista XR experience is essential for brands moving forward in order to really connect with this generation and their communities in an authentic and meaningful way. 17.45 Jason says, “Virtual environments are becoming more and more engaging and more and more desired to be participated in, especially amongst young generations.” 19.58 Krista explains, “We are selling virtual plots of land that are basically mapped geographically onto the real world. Then we also have the actual interface that allows people to upload our digital 3D assets into the room space. So, you could imagine what concerts or Disneyland would be like with 3D digital NFT creating an immersive experience for you and your family like you could literally dance with Mickey Mouse or raise a pet Simba and you could wear the Elsa dress right, and they're all kinds of incredible projects because the apple, the apple glasses, are coming out in a year.21.08: While talking about big events, Krista says, “Many people were making so many wasteful decisions for these events that can easily be a solvable, beautiful, more amazing experience in AR. 22.03: The fact that you can make friends and have playdates and kids in Egypt and visit the pyramids and learn all about it. That's the future of education and travel, says Krista.27.15 Krista is glad that she found a collector on Super Rare. She says luckily, “In the community, we have a lot of visionaries and futurists, and art on the Internet is a consortium of collectors, and they are investing in the future.” 30.01: According to Krista, “We should have a healthy ecosystem, and that is facilitated through people who support the work. She adds,” I believe that the major change that we are seeing because of the NFT market is that their percentages are being lowered for 50%, maybe 30 to 20%, something a little bit fairer to the Creator and also the resale, royalties, and NFT markets.” 30.08: For super rare, Krista says, “Where I am based, we get a 10% royalty per resale on the secondary market, and I think that tradition and that new system will be also adopted in the traditional art world where it hasn't.” 32.27: Krista shares, “How as a digital artist, it was kind of difficult to get mainstream art world support of her work.”3 Key Points:Krista shares the importance of discussing arts and humanities in the boardrooms. She points out the value of discussions and collaborations so that companies not only have engineers and entrepreneurs but also people who understand the human touch. Krista talks about the major power shift that NFT gives to the digital artists.

It's a real treat to check in with the vivacious and witty Krista Kim & Katherine McClelland of the popular Holy F*ck Podcast. The two Ojai women — coaches, counselors (Katherine is also a minister) and authors began their podcast, now in its third season, after a serendipitous encounter at a local watering hole. Their overlapping yet distinct practices give them the insights into themselves, each other and their clients. Krista describes her practice as focusing on people going through "big, sexy, spiritual changes," and Katherine's as for "people in partnership opening to each other in a really powerful way." Krista and Katherine both have Masters Degrees in Spiritual Psychology, which, as they say, "gives them the fancy credentials to talk health, healing, and the mind/body/spirit connection, and their wildly varied personal histories give them the unofficial street smarts to talk about sex, love, and well, anything they want!" Given the specific conversations about the people in their lives, the two often run into people who know them and their relationships and their journeys. "As you know, Ojai is a small town," but the people they are in relationship with are in on the game. They describe their podcast talks as a back-and-forth that enhances their value to their clients, and also helps them grow personally with insight and compassion. The conversation ranges widely from the dynamics of feminine and masculine, the changing gender roles of this modern world, and the idea of bringing presence and spirit to the everyday life. We also talk about how men are stupid and women are crazy; we talk about men coming out of their caves and opening themselves the vulnerabilities of growth, as well as women finding their way to loving their selves and their partnerships. How do we love each other without compromising the essence of who we are? Come on in and find out. As the ladies say, "if you are a regular, open-minded person stumbling through dating, relationships, parenting, and everyday life, then this podcast will tickle your taint." Check it out at twogalsoulschool.com. We didn't get around the talking about the transcontinental railroad, glassmaking or the Lakers' return to Lebron-inspired glory.
