Seit 1959 stand es im Eingangsbereich, Generationen von Kindern haben es mit funkelnden Augen bestaunt. 2020 musste es wegen Umbauten weg. Es wurde ohne Zukunftspläne in ein Depot gebracht. Eine Gruppe passionierter Modelleisenbähnler machte aber Druck und startete eine Petition für die Rückkehr des Modells. Mit Erfolg. Nun ist es wieder zu sehen – restauriert in 12'000 ehrenamtlichen Arbeitsstunden und grösser als je zuvor.  [00:09:40] BE: Das Mittelstandsklavier, das zum Arbeiterstreik führte Die Klavierfabrik «Burger & Jacobi» stellte in Biel über 100 Jahre lang Klaviere her. Es war kein Top-Produkt, sondern ermöglichte Mittelstandsfamilien in der Schweiz, sich auch ein Klavier in die Wohnung zu stellen. Doch die oft italienischen Arbeiter wurden schlecht entlöhnt. Das führte zu einem Streik, der 1974 die ganze Schweiz beschäftigte. Ein Klavierbauer und der Kurator einer Ausstellung erzählen die Geschichte der Firma bis zum Konkurs 1991. Officiellement connu sous le nom de Stade national de la capitale, c'est une structure emblématique, réputée pour sa conception architecturale unique et son importance dans l'histoire du sport moderne.  « J'aime beaucoup sa structure. Il a une certaine beauté architecturale. Il est très grand ! Majestueux et grandiose. C'est d'une beauté chaotique ». Chen, grand adolescent qui avait 3 ans lors des JO en 2008, suit avec nous la visite guidée… À nos côtés également, Li, qui vit en dehors de Pékin, regarde autour d'elle les yeux émerveillés. « C'est grandiose et magnifique, en particulier la structure architecturale extérieure. C'est vraiment incroyable. J'ai l'impression que l'architecture est très avancée et que la créativité des architectes était étonnante ».« Une logique géométrique stricte » : les origines du designImaginé par les architectes suisses Jacques Herzog et Pierre de Meuron, en collaboration avec le chinois Li Xinggang, le Nid d'oiseau trône au nord de Pékin, pile sur l'axe central de la capitale chinoise qui vient d'obtenir le statut de patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco. L'architecte Zhang Yingxin revient sur les origines de la création du stade. « Le design s'inspire de la forme classique des bols traditionnels, dont les bords s'élèvent et s'abaissent pour former une ellipse en forme de selle. La grande structure en maille d'acier utilisée autour du stade national est l'une des principales raisons pour lesquelles on l'appelle le Nid d'oiseau. Il s'inspire de la culture et de l'art traditionnel chinois. Le motif a été inspiré par des morceaux brisés de porcelaine chinoise traditionnelle. Le dessin peut sembler aléatoire mais il suit en réalité une logique géométrique stricte, développée étape par étape ».Elle explique qu'il a fallu trouver l'équilibre entre art, tradition et efficacité. « La structure complexe en acier du stade intègre des systèmes de collecte et d'utilisation de l'eau de pluie, qui peut ensuite être utilisée pour l'irrigation et le nettoyage des espaces verts environnants. De nombreux matériaux permettant d'économiser l'énergie ont été utilisés, notamment du verre à faible émissivité, qui réduit considérablement le transfert de chaleur ».« Un défi mondial » : l'héritage post-événement du Nid d'oiseauLes constructions de grande envergure pour des événements majeurs ont donné naissance au concept connu sous le nom de « l'effet de l'éléphant blanc »... Ces édifices doivent faire face à des problèmes d'exploitation et d'entretien après les événements, devenant ainsi des fardeaux importants et peu pratiques pour la ville. Pour s'assurer que le Nid d'oiseau continue à jouer un rôle dans la ville après les Jeux olympiques de 2008, Wang Yuxiong, directeur et professeur du centre de recherche sur l'économie du sport à l'université centrale des finances et de l'économie, nous explique que son héritage avait été bien pensé. « L'utilisation post-événement de grands sites comme celui-ci est un défi mondial. En tant qu'attraction touristique majeure, la vente de billets est une source de revenus importante. Le Nid d'oiseau accueille également des matchs de football et des événements culturels tels que des concerts. Ces divers formats assurent sa rentabilité ».Les économistes l'ont constaté, l'organisation des Jeux olympiques a eu un impact positif sur la croissance économique de Pékin. Ils font part également de l'augmentation des échanges commerciaux, les Jeux olympiques ayant stimulé la croissance du commerce international. La visite se conclut pile entre deux répétitions d'un concert qui aura lieu ici sous peu. Toren van Babel is een maandelijkse serie binnen de Architectenweb Podcast. Doel is het antwoord vinden op de vraag: hoe maak je nu een echt goed hoog gebouw? De gast deze maand is architect Evert Klinkenberg, mede-oprichter van BETA.Evert vertelt over zijn ervaring in Zwitserland, waar hij studeerde aan de ETH, en bij kantoor Herzog & de Meuron meewerkte aan het ontwerp van de hoogste toren van Basel. Hij vertelt over zijn terugkeer naar Amsterdam, en de start van BETA, het architectenbureau dat hij samen met Auguste van Oppen begon. BETA heeft een systematische manier van werken ontwikkeld, waarbij onderzoek en ontwerp zich parallel ontwikkelen. Dat komt onder andere naar voren in het onderzoek dat het bureau deed naar beweeglogica in opdracht van de Gemeente Amsterdam. De ideeën uit dat onderzoek werden vervolgens realiteit in het gebouw De Draaier op Oostenburg in Amsterdam, dat recent werd opgeleverd. In het onderwerp drie generatie wonen was de volgorde andersom: het realiseren van een woning voor drie generaties zette het bureau op het spoor van een onderzoek, dat leidde tot een inspirerend boek in samenwerking met gebiedsontwikkelaar AM. Nel farlo ambientano i loro film a stretto contatto con alcuni dei progetti architettonici più iconici della nostra contemporaneità disegnati da nomi come Herzog&de Meuron, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano o Rem Koolhaas.Dal 2008 quando hanno iniziato il loro sodalizio artistico e personale, Bêka&Lemoine hanno realizzato oltre 30 film che sono stati proiettati nelle più importanti istituzioni culturali e museali, oltre che in varie biennali e festival cinematografici internazionali. Nel 2016 il MoMA ha acquisito il loro lavoro completo che è ora parte della sua collezione permanente. Sono inoltre invitati regolarmente a tenere corsi e workshop in Accademie ed università. Museumsbesuche auf Rezept? Heilungsbeschleunigende Krankenzimmer? Gehirnstimulierende Musik für Babys? Die Forschung kommt immer deutlicher zu dem Schluss: Kunst kann helfen, gesund zu werden. Und gesund zu bleiben. Im Universitätsspital Genf gelingt der neurologische Nachweis, dass bei Frühchen mehr Synapsen wachsen durch das Hören von Musik. Möglich wurde das durch die aussergewöhnliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen einer Kinderärztin und einem Musiker. Andreas Vollenweider probierte all seine Musikinstrumente aus und fand heraus, auf welches Instrument die Babys besonders stark reagieren. In seinem Tonstudio bildete er anschliessend eine Art Klangwolke, die die Gehirnentwicklung der Neugeborenen nachhaltig beeinflusste. Schmerzreduktion, Stressreduktion, Angstreduktion. All das verspricht die sogenannte «Healing Architecture». Das international bekannte Architekturbüro Herzog & de Meuron baut Spitäler, die den Bedürfnissen aller Menschen darin gerecht werden sollen. So auch das neue Kinderspital in Zürich. Leuchtturmprojekt ist nach wie vor das Rehab Basel, das die Stararchitekten vor über 20 Jahren eröffneten. «Architektur kann zum zweiten Körper werden», sagt Architekturpsychologin Tanja C. Vollmer, die in Studien belegt hat, welche Auswirkungen Räume auf kranke Menschen haben. Musik und Tanz werden im Kampf gegen die unheilbaren Nervenkrankheiten Parkinson und Multiple Sklerose eingesetzt. Sie scheinen die Symptome zu lindern. An der Hochschule Luzern tüfteln daher Forschende und Betroffene in ihrem Projekt «Music, Movement, Mood and Parkinson`s» an neuen Therapien. «Kulturplatz» war einen Tag lang dabei. Gleichzeitig lancieren das Opernhaus Zürich und die Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich das für die Schweiz einmalige Tanzprojekt: «Connect». Das Ziel: mittels Musik und Tanz das Fortschreiten der neurologischen Krankheiten zu verlangsamen und das Leben freudvoller zu machen. Den Impuls zu «Connect» gab die neue Ballettdirektorin Cathy Marston, deren Mutter mit Multipler Sklerose lebt.

This episode, we are thrilled to be joined by the visionary collector, philanthropist, Pamela Kramlich. Over the last 35 years, alongside her husband Richard Kramlich, Pamela has built one of the most distinguished and expansive collections of time-based media art. The collection, which includes over 200 works of film, video, slide, and installation, as well as more than 250 works of photography, sculpture, painting, and drawing is predominantly located in their home in Napa Valley California, where they commissioned Herzog and de Meuron to design a residence and exhibition space. Pam is also the founder of the New Art Trust, one of the most important nonprofits leading the conversation around conservation, presentation, and public education for “new media” art. This incredible organization has been instrumental in building new practices around how we view, maintain, and think about art work today. In addition to that, Pam is a distinguished philanthropist, sitting on the board of SF MoMA in addition to many other organizations. Von 2009 bis 2015 betreute er selbständig im eigenem Designstudio Kunden von München aus. Viele seiner Arbeiten wurden mit Awards ausgezeichnet (IF Award, RedDot, EISA Award). Seine Expertise auf dem Gebiet neuer Materialien und Technologien als Katalysator für innovative Produktkonzepte befähigte ihn zu Vorträgen auf Fachveranstaltungen und Symposien (z.B. „Material Vision 2007“ Rat für Formgebung / German Design Council). Neben seiner hauptberuflichen Tätigkeit war er von 2007 bis 2013 als Dozent, Betreuer und Prüfer zahlreicher Diplomarbeiten an Hochschulen für Gestaltung aktiv. An der HFG Schwäbisch-Gmünd lehrte er die Fächer „Produkt und Prozess“, „Grundlagen der Produktgestaltung“ und an der FH München „Innovationsmethodologie“ (Masterstudiengang) sowie „Gestaltungsgrundlagen“. Schwerpunkte waren die systematische Auseinandersetzung mit gestalterisch ästhetischen Fragen im Bereich technischer Produktsysteme in Hinblick auf Innovation, Ergonomie und Usability im Kontext industrieller Serienproduktion und Anwendererlebnis.

“As a young architect, I hated photographs where you saw people. And now I hate photographs where you don't see people,” Jacques Herzog says. Sheena Wagstaff leads the Met's commitment to modern and contemporary art, including the design of the international exhibition program at The Met Breuer (2016-20), artist commissions, and collection displays. She has also curated numerous shows at the Met, amongst which are Gerhard Richter: Painting After All (2020); Like Life: Sculpture, Color, and The Body (1300-Now) (2018); and Nasreen Mohamedi (2016), and oversaw the David Hockney exhibition (2017). Significant acquisitions have been brought into the collection under her leadership, including works by Pablo Bronstein, Cecily Brown, Phil Collins, Tacita Dean, Peter Doig, Nick Goss, Chantal Joffe, Hew Locke, Sarah Lucas, Adam McEwen, Steve McQueen, Lucy McKenzie, Cornelia Parker (who was also featured as The Met's 2016 Roof Garden Commission artist), Bridget Riley, Rachel Whiteread, as well as Vanessa Bell, Lucian Freud, Roger Fry, and Barbara Hepworth. A new Met Façade commission, and an exhibition, each by British artists, are planned in the coming years. With a curatorial team representing expertise from across the globe, she is building a distinctive collection for the Met, both culturally and geographically, to reflect the historic depth of its global collections. Before joining the Met, Wagstaff was Chief Curator of Tate Modern, London, where, for 11 years, she was responsible for initiating the exhibition program, the Turbine Hall artist commissions, and contributing to the conceptual framework of collection displays. With the Tate Director, she worked with architects Herzog & de Meuron on the design for the Tate Modern Switch House building. She curated noteworthy exhibitions such as Roy Lichtenstein; John Burke + Simon Norfolk: Photographs from the War in Afghanistan; Jeff Wall Photographs 1978-2004; Darren Almond: Night as Day; and Mona Hatoum: The Entire World as a Foreign Land. Over the course of her career, Wagstaff has worked for the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford; the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; The Frick Art Museum, Pittsburgh; and Tate Britain, London, where she played a seminal role in its transformation from the former Tate Gallery. She is a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of Art in Embassies (FAPE), and from 2013-2019, she was a United States Nominating Committee Member for Praemium Imperiale. April 10th, 2020 Last September, the Parrish Art Museum invited OptoSonic Tea to present an evening-length performance, featuring 18 of the world's most innovative video and sound artists to interact with the architecture and landscape of the Museum. The durational and site-specific group improvisation featured visual artists performing live in different areas outside of the Museum building, while live musicians and sound artists performed coordinated and spatialized works by composer and Diapason Gallery founder/director Michael J. Schumacher.  The spectacle allowed the over 400 visitors to experience the Herzog & de Meuron designed building in entirely new ways. Corinne Erni, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects, hosted a conversation with OptoSonic Tea founders, intermedia artists Katherine Liberovskaya and Ursula Scherrer, about the performance at the Parrish, their work during Coronavirus, and upcoming projects with Sarah Weaver from NowNets Art who joined the conversation.  OptoSonic Tea was conceived in 2006 as a series of salon-style meetings that explore various forms of live visuals and their interaction with live audio, followed by an informal discussion about the artists' practices over a cup of green tea.
