Mastering Self-Regulation: How to Respond Instead of React

Inspirational Leadership with Kristen Harcourt

Do you know what triggers you and how your body responds when dysregulated? How do you master the self-regulation skill? While you can't control everything that happens to you, you can control how you respond—and that's where growth and freedom lie. In this solo episode of the Inspirational Leadership podcast, Kristen discusses the power of self-regulation and how taking responsibility for how you show up can change your life and relationships. She shares practical tools like deep breathing, self-compassion, and self-soothing techniques to help regain control when triggered. Listen in to learn how to create new neural pathways by intentionally choosing new responses, even if old patterns feel deeply ingrained.  You will also learn the importance of modeling vulnerability and repairing relationships when you don't show up as your best self. Key Takeaways: The importance of self-regulation, especially in high-stress situations where triggers can lead to dysregulation. Understanding fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses in high-stress situations. How self-regulation can help you choose a more compassionate and intentional approach to responding. How apologizing and taking responsibility can repair and strengthen relationships. Understanding that emotions only last 90 seconds in the body, and how to break free from emotional spirals. Standout Quotes: “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." – Charles R. Swindoll “What triggers you is a mirror to show you where you're not free." – Peter Crone “Emotions are moved through very quickly—within 90 seconds. After that, any remaining emotional response is a choice to stay in that emotional cycle." – Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor “The most difficult people in your life are your biggest teachers." – Kristen Harcourt

Discover your true leadership potential with Moxie! In today's episode, host Linda Yates speaks with Kristen Harcourt on the importance of leading with moxie and heart. Find out why these attributes are essential to being a successful leader. What is Moxie? Kristen has 15 years of experience as a culture leader and has empowered executives to help them become successful. She found that many leaders struggle with negative self-talk, sensations, and conditions.  These traits often hold them back from being proficient at people management and creating a positive workplace. Moxie is helping others find the fire within themselves to bring out their passions and true authentic self to the world. How can being moxie turn into having a negative label You may present the wrong aura when stepping into your Moxie if you're not careful. Others may put a specific label on you if you show too much Moxie within the workplace. For example, men are seen as confident and strong when assertive. Yet, if women show too much assertiveness within the workplace, others would label her as aggressive. It's a fine line between the two; people will quickly lean into the "bad" label if they think you're doing too much. However, remember that when people label you negatively, it's more about them and less about you! How do you know if you're showing up as Moxie? Everyone has it within themselves. However, you must know how to create your version of Moxie. Give yourself time to play around until you find what works for you. Practice before others and experiment to help you develop your version of Moxie. Receive feedback from people you trust to know if you're being overly aggressive or not looking comfortable enough while speaking. Remember that you're always evolving, and your Moxie from 5 years ago won't look the same as your today version of Moxie! Other ways to develop Moxie Have a community to help you along the way throughout your journey. You can overcome your challenges without letting fear hold you back by being around women struggling with the same problems. Also, start limiting your negative self-talk and beliefs. How can someone else believe in you if you don't believe in yourself?  For extreme introverts, consider using storytelling to help you connect with others on a deeper level. Storytelling is a great way to let others know who you are and understand your reasoning behind everything. How can Moxie get in the way of heart leadership? Moxie sounds great when you're trying to build self-confidence, but too much of it may cost you. Kristen tells us how to keep this from happening and why the heart connection is essential for leadership. “To be Moxie embodies competence, assertiveness, ownership, accountability, authenticity, and compassion. It's really having all of that together.” - Kristen Harcourt Resources Alexia Vernon: Step Into Your Moxie  Kristinharcourt.com  LinkedIn and Instagram Check out the Int-HER-rupt Website at www.intherrupt.com! Forging Employee Experience

For being entrenched in a society with so much change, we love the status quo. By default, most people prefer to find a situation that they are comfortable with and stay there. It takes so much incentive to force a behavioral change that entire industries have been built around getting people to do something different than they are used to. Those charged with crafting a positive employee experience are often victims of this inertia. It’s an unfortunate paradox: if an organization has been around long enough to need intentionality in the management of their employee’s experience, they are profitable, successful and less likely to think any change to culture is necessary. This business success is too often viewed as the end goal and provides a false sense of success. Profitability is never the end goal. It’s certainly a major milestone but once it becomes the sole purpose of an organization, that org will soon see the beginning of its decline. Instead organizations should be prepared to fight against this inertia and continuously strive to improve. Companies must be constantly looking for ways they can improve the lives of their employees. They must be intentional about how they go about creating a better experience for those they employ. In a recent podcast with Kristen Harcourt, Global Executive, Leadership & Career Coach, we had the privilege of discussing this concept of strategic intentionality. One of the highlights of Kristen’s message was her point that as we work to break out of the inertia that prevents us from making an impactful difference on the workplace, we should err on the side of kindness. It’s so easy be overwhelmed with all that goes into making a great place to work. However, if we are committed to kindness and respect, our policies and initiatives will reflect that, and our company culture eventually become one where people want to stay. To hear the rest of the podcast, visit Forging Employee Experience. To connect with Kristen, visit her at her LinkedInor at her website. Not becoming complacent with profits and being able to break through the inertia inherent with success, organizations will be able to saturate their companies with a culture that exudes kindness and respect. This cannot help but create a culture which employee have a deeply positive connection with the place where they work. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/forgeant/support
