Episode 47 Jason catches up with his ex-wife, Los Angeles raised, former Olympia punk, now fellow Portlander Star Athena. The two talk about Star's experience growing up in Los Angeles. Raised in a westside apartment down the hall from Punky Meadows, frontman of Casablanca recording artists Angel. Her brother Heath played in many LA bands, doing a stint with Angry Samoans among others. She talks about how as a teen going to punk shows she was repulsed by the sexual violence and harassment she experienced in the crowd, but that it didn't crush her love of music. Star and Jason met in the very early 90's when she was a DJ at influential college station KUSF in San Francisco and he was working for Jello Biafra at Alternative Tentacles. They discuss those vital years in SF before tech dollars leveled the city's culture and the music industry was exploding with alternative grunginess. They go on to explore their move to Olympia after attending the International Pop Underground Fest and they recall what they both saw as the D.I.Y. pastoral punk paradise they found in their new home. They get into her two bands Flying Tigers and SubDebs who both released vinyl on K Records. It's not all about the past; Star explains how her diagnosis of Autism in her forties has given her a greater level of understanding and self-acceptance. She also shares some of the techniques and practices she uses today to mitigate the stress and anxiety of life and the challenges of living with multiple chronic illnesses. It's an uplifting conversation that went on much longer than one episode could hold. Hopefully Star will be back for a part two soon! Thank you for listening! This is episode #11 of Artful Thought, recorded live at the University of San Francisco's KUSF studio, which aired on Saturday, July 27th, 2019. I'm beyond stoked to talk with Paul S. Flores. His roles as a prolific poet, playwright, performance artist, youth arts educator, and USF theater professor continue to inspire and illuminate. Due to copyright laws, I had to cut the music from the recording, but have embedded my Spotify playlist on KUSF to accompany the edited cut. The music includes legendary and current Latinx artists PALO!, Cimafunk, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, La Lupe, Obsesión, and the Colorado-based Mocochetes accompanied with their tribute music video to the 1969 Walk-Out Movement, Que Viva la Revolución. ............................ Paul’s Future & Ongoing Projects: On top of teaching his popular Hip Hop Theater course here at USF, this fall he will also be teaching in SF State’s Theater Department, and two creative writing classes in the Prison Arts Project at Solano, Vacaville State Prison. His portfolio of outreach includes co-founding Youth Speaks, Brave New Voices: National Teen Poetry Slam (now on HBO), founder of Latino Men & Boys Program, former programming director at La Peña Cultural Center and currently the Paseo Artístico Coordinator at Acción Latina. As a performing artist, he has gone on tour with his creative works and collaborations all over the U.S. as well as internationally, including Cuba, Mexico, El Salvador— and most recently presented at 2019 Latinx Theatre Commons in Miami, Florida. His play, We Have Iré begins touring in December. Creative Works Along the Border Lies (2001 novel) “Brown Dreams” (spoken word appearing on HBO’s Def Poetry, contestant on seasons 3 and 4) “Gravity's Volume” (spoken word) plays include… PLACAS: The Most Dangerous Tattoo YOU'RE GONNA CRY (SF Weekly's Best Politically Active Hip-Hop Performance Artist) REPRESENTA! This is episode number 10 of Artful Thought, recorded live at the University of San Francisco’s KUSF studio, which aired on Saturday, June 29th, 2019. This is Part 2, but not the finale, of a music-talk feature about the ongoing celebration and an address to current social issues of the LGBTQIA community. The mix consists of phenomenal new (and newish) artists as well as seminal figures, including Lou Reed, Le Tigre, Ezra Furman, Blood Orange, Girlpool feat Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Dizzy Fae, Courtney Barnett, Ssion, Troye Sivan, RuPaul feat. Kummerspeck, Janelle Monáe, Planningtorock and KUSF currents: Lucille Furs, Amyl + the Sniffers, Soak, and Razteria. Between Pride Parts 1 and 2, I do a scattering of commentary on music from decades starting from the 1920s to current, as well as historical/cultural landmarks, including the “Lavender Scare,” and personal ponderings about the other “Q.” Both episodes come back to engaging with an ongoing question about gender-sexuality exploration while respecting boundaries that refrain from Queer appropriation. Also, as chatted about, but not deeply dove into, I referenced some enlightening sources on Queer culture and how the history of LGBTQIA came into the movement as we understand it today. Those references and others are... The podcast, Making Gay History Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness's episode "What's Your Experience with the Binary?" featuring Alok Vaid-Menon NPR podcast, Throughline's episode "Before Stonewall" Ellen Page and Ian Daniel's docu-series Gaycation And, because there was either not enough time on my show or because of certain USF boundaries with language discretion, I wasn't able to share some artists' songs on my mix over the live airwaves. But, in case you missed the entire show or just the songs I didn't include, please do check out their music on my Spotify playlist (*not-aired starts at "Touch" by Shura)... Most significantly, if you are experiencing any kind of crisis... or abuse (mental and/or physical) related to your (non)gender and/or sexual identity, please know that you have a community that loves you, supports you, and will enthusiastically help you feel more welcome for whoever you are, and protect you from abusers. if you are Transgender/sexual, reach out to Trans Lifeline at 877-565-8860, for youth, reach out to The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386, for individuals of any other LGBTQIA identity, please reach out to GLBT National Help Center at 1-888-843-4564, and for more info or community support, check out oStem's LGBTQ Crisis Hotlines and Services. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/darcy-allred/message
This is episode number 9 of Artful Thought, recorded live at the University of San Francisco’s KUSF studio, which aired on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019. On the live show, I named the first episode of a 2-part special, “All the Pride and No Prejudice”, reverting back to my DJ Mr. Darcy persona as I jammed-and-gabbed out to a playlist made up of Queer Artists, seminal through current to celebrate the month of Pride. The playlist is chalked full of fantastical artists, starting with Ma Rainey, Lesley Gore, Liberace, Queen, Tracy Chapman, Sylvester, RuPaul featuring Martha Wash, Jobriath, Elton John vs. Pnau, George Michael, David Bowie, The Internet, and Vampire Weekend. In mic breaks, I talk about each artist and related LGBTQIA issues from past to present. Due to copyright laws, I had to cut the music from the recording, but have included my archived Pride Part 1 playlist to accompany the edited cut. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/darcy-allred/message
I'm gigantically honored to talk with Ayasha Tripp on this week's episode. Ayasha is a Writer, Educator, Producer, Creative Activist, and I came across her in the stellar podcast, The Seeds You Sow which she hosts and produces here at the KUSF studio. In the myriad hats she wears, she always dons the urgency and importance of social justice that relies on a willingness to keep talking, listening, learning and in turn, changing our lives for the better. She's an extra special guest, because I'm not sure if my show would exist without her guidance back in the spring of 2018 where she led a 2 hour podcast workshop which influenced me to start my own show. And what draws me to Ayasha most is how she wears so many hats, as a podcaster, producer, activist, film, media and theatre savant, and all of which come around to highlight the value of writing, sharing, and being supportive of causes that create positive social change. In our talk, she reflects on the impact of the storytellers in her family, the importance of reading writers like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and learning about the history of Oakland’s Black Panther Party, acknowledging these historical figures and movements as paving the way for her own artistic and academic endeavors. She also takes us through the ups, downs, middles, and any other directions taken in the ever-capricious relationship that artists have with the work that pushes toward their vision. Most importantly, she comes back around to her conviction for sharing stories in the first place, saying that she wanted to create “stories that empower...that encourage and start social discourse” as well as giving advice to “be brave and bold enough in order to really pursue what makes you happy.” Roles, works, and ways to follow and support Ayasha in her various projects... MACHINE HEAD. Robb Flynn of Machine Head tells Ryan J. Downey about coming of age in the Bay Area during the dawn of the thrash metal scene; seeing Metallica, Exodus, Raven, D.R.I., and other crucial acts in the ‘80s; the highly influential KUSF radio; the prominent role of Dave Mustaine in the early days of Metallica; the formation of his third wave thrash band, Forbidden Evil; supporting Metallica on the Death Magnetic tour; and his small role in bringing Slayer and Metallica together for the Big 4. Flynn and Downey also discuss Black Sabbath, Jason Newsted, “Mechanix” vs. “The Four Horsemen,” the first five Metallica albums, the Load/Reload era, St. Anger, and yes, that Lou Reed record. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Janet Gallin and Tresa Eyres are The Love Letter Squad. These two inspiring women offer workshops on how to write love letters to friends, family members and lovers. Their work has inspired hundreds of people to walk across burning bridges to heal old wounds, and to express on paper the love and respect that we feel for those closest to us, yet may not be able to articulate. In addition to their workshops they also write a regular column for the San Francisco Examiner blog and are the hosts of a popular radio program on KUSF in San Francisco. The San Francisco feed of Insomnia Radio has been dark since February 2008, but today I’m ridiculously excited to be throwing the switch once again. As we have with IR: Chicago, our San Francisco is getting a reboot of sorts, beginning fresh with episode 1. That being said, the new iteration pays a few nods […]
If you see a plume of black smoke rising from the crossfader then you know Smoove (a.k.a. Ian Chang) just got off the decks. That was the case again last Saturday night at “Shackled”, a rockin' up-and-coming monthly at Shine Dance Lounge (http://www.shinesf.com), where Smoove provided the perfect climax to a fantastic party with one of his signature breakbeat sets. And guess who just so happened to be there to record it for your listening enjoyment? If you've spent any length of time in the San Francisco dance scene, Smoove needs no introduction. He's been igniting packed dance floors (and wearing out crossfaders) with infectious booty-shakin' beats for almost ten years now. But if you aren't from around these parts (or don't get out that often) here's a little more background on this week's talented guest DJ..... Rising out of the 90's Drum 'n Bass scene in San Francisco, Smoove quickly became a fixture on the underground Breakz circuit in 2001 DJ'ing with The Space Cowboys and their mighty Unimog. These days his signature power-funk Breakz sound can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco's night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty. All his hard work in the night club trenches has earned him membership in nitevibe.com's DJ Dream Team since 2004 and was voted Best DJ 2008 by the readers of the S.F. Bay Guardian in their annual "Best of the Bay" issue. Taking his sound to the airwaves, Smoove has been featured on XM Satellite Radio's Thump Funk show (XM 80) as well as Below Zero on Energy 92.7 and was a frequent guest on Future Breaks on KUSF. Currently, he can be heard on Fog City Funk every Wednesday night at 8pm PST on Nu Skool Breaks Radio (nsbradio.co.uk) In 2004 he, along with Donna Matrix, started publishing the underground magazine NewsBreakz and more recently launched NBz 2.0 (newsbreakz.com) the on-line version in late 2008. Simply put, Smoove is one of the quintessential taste makers in the San Francisco Breakz scene today and can always be relied on to bring a big party fun sound that makes the crowd go giddy on the dance floor. Smoove's mix is also available on The Gough Street Sessions podcast: http://bit.ly/goughstreet-iTunes

Recently though, a listener phoned to challenge them to guess where she'd grown up based on her accent. See if you can figure it out!--Get your language question answered on the air!
